It seems strange that nearly 3/4 of the earth is covered with water while we say we are short of water. Why? Because about 97% of the water on earth is sea water which we can’t drink or use for watering plants directly. Man can only drink and use the 3% — the water that comes from rivers and lakes. And we can’t even use all of that, because some of it has been polluted. Now more water is needed. The problem is: Can we avoid a serious water shortage later on? Of course we can. Firstly, we should all learn how to save water. Secondly, we should find out ways to reuse it. Scientists have always been making studies in the field. Today, in most large cities water is used only once and then runs to the sea or rivers. But it can be used again. Even if every large city reuses its water, still there will not be enough. What could people turn to next? The sea seems to have the best answer. There is a lot of water in the sea. All that needs to be done is to get the salt out of the sea water. This is expensive, but it’s already used in many parts of the world. Scientists are trying to find a cheaper way of doing it. 1.In Paragraph 1, the passage wants to ________. A team of researchers from the US Curiosity Rover Mission, analyzed (分析) some mudstone and fine-grained sediment (细粒沉积物) which can tell us that there was at least one lake around 3.6 billion years ago. The team said their analysis showed that the lake was calm and likely had fresh water, including key biological elements, such as carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur (硫磺). Theoretically, such a lake would provide perfect conditions for simple living things. The findings were published in the US Journal Science and presented at the American Geophysical Union’s fall meeting in San Francisco. “It is important to note that we have not found signs of ancient life on Mars. What we have found is that there once existed a lake on its surface which might make it possible for some simple living things to live billions of years ago,” Professor Sanjeev Gupta said in a statement. Gupta described the new research as “a huge positive step” for the exploration of Mars. In previous studies, scientists found evidence of water on Mars’ surface in other rocks. However, the new research provides the strongest evidence yet that Mars could have been habitable enough for life to continue. 1.Researchers have found evidence that an ancient fresh water lake probably existed on ________. B.Gupta thought of the new research as “a huge positive step” for the exploration of Mars. C.Researchers have taken great efforts to find signs of ancient life on Mars. D.The findings about the fresh water lake haven’t been published in the US Journal Science. 5.On which column of a book can you find this passage? A.Science. B.Travelling. C.Life. D.Education. 6.What is the passage mainly about? A.How did the fresh water lake disappear on Mars? B.Ancient life signs found on Mars. C.An ancient fresh water lake on Mars. D.The importance of water. 【答案】1.C 2.D 3.A 4.B 5.A 6.C 【导语】本文主要介绍了火星上古老的淡水湖。 1.细节理解题。根据“Researchers said they had found out that there was once an ancient fresh water lake on Mars that might have been able to support life.”可知,研究人员发现了火星上可能存在一个古老淡水湖的证据。故选C。 2.细节理解题。根据“including key biological elements, such as carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and sulphur (硫磺).”包括关键的生物元素,如碳、氢、氧、氮和硫。可知,在火星上发现了除二氧化碳以外的以下生物元素。故选D。 3.词义猜测题。根据“However, the new research provides the strongest evidence yet that Mars could have been habitable enough for life to continue.”可知,研究提供的有力证据证明了火星可以居住,并足以让生命延续下去,所以划线单词habitable可能是“可居住的”的意思。故选A。 4.细节理解题。根据“Gupta described the new research as ‘a huge positive step’ for the exploration of Mars.”可知,古普塔认为这项新研究是探索火星的“一个巨大的积极步骤”。故选B。 5.推理判断题。根据“Researchers said they had found out that there was once an ancient fresh water lake on Mars that might have been able to support life.”及下文的介绍可知,本文介绍了一项新的研究,因此可能出现在科学杂志上。故选A。 6.主旨大意题。根据“Researchers said they had found out that there was once an ancient fresh water lake on Mars that might have been able to support life.”可知,本文介绍了火星上有一个古老的淡水湖。故选C。 No matter who we are, where we are, or what we do, we cannot live without water. It is the source (源泉) of all life and we need it every day. But in truth we’re facing serious water problems. Although water covers 71 percent of earth’s surface, “We can only use a very small amount of it. Only about 3 percent of the world’s water is fresh water (淡水). A survey from the United Nations shows that there are over 663 million people living without a safe water supply close to home. To remind people of the importance of water, the UN first established World Water Day in 1993. It is held on March 22 each year. In 2017 the UN raised a theme—“Wastewater”. According to the UN, wastewater problems make water shortages (短缺) even more serious. Most of the wastewater from our homes, cities and industries goes directly back to nature. Instead of letting it pollute the environment, the industries need to treat it first. China takes action to deal with water problems, too. From March 22 to 28 is the China Water Week. During this period, the Chinese government starts a “river chiefs (负责人)” project. Just as every province, city and county (县) has a leader, every river in China will have a chief, too. Local government heads will be river chiefs. They will be responsible for all the rivers and lakes in their places. They need to make sure that industries have already treated the wastewater. And they also need to clean up the polluted waters before they go into nature. 1.Why does the writer mention the survey from the United Nations? A.To speak highly of the importance of the survey. B.To tell people we need to make more fresh water. C.To prove there isn’t much drinking water on earth. D.To show many people walk a long way to get water. 2.What similar steps have China and the UN taken to solve water problems? A.Stopping industries from pouring dirty water directly. The world is not only hungry, but also thirsty for water. A.show us we have enough water B.tell us we can use less water than we think C.talk about what the earth is made of D.tell us the importance of sea water 2.How many ways is mentioned to avoid a serious water shortage in the passage? A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four. 3.This passage probably comes from ________. A.an advertisement B.a novel C.a guidebook D.a science report 4.What is probably the best title for this passage? A.The world is thirsty. B.The use of sea. C.We need more food. D.Change the sea water into fresh water. The world is not hungry, but it is thirsty. It seems strange that nearly 3/4 of the earth is covered with water while we say we are short of water. Why? First, we should all learn how to save water. Secondly, we should find out the ways to reuse it. Scientists have always been making studies in the field. Today, in most large cities, water is used only once and then runs to the sea or rivers. But it can be used again. Even if every large city reused its water, still there would not be enough. What should people do next? The sea seems to have the best answer. There is a lot of water in the sea. All that needs to be done is to get the salt out of the sea water. This is expensive, but it’s already used in many parts of the world. The most important to avoid a serious water shortage is to find a cheaper way of getting the salt out of the sea water. Scientists are trying to do it. So you see, if we can find a way out, we’ll be in no danger of drying up. 1.The world is thirsty because ________. A.Make dirty water clean and then reuse it. B.Try to find a cheaper way to get the salt out of the sea water. C.Don’t pollute water and keep all rivers and lakes clean. D.Save water and try to make good use of the water in rivers and lakes. 4.The best title of the passage would be ________. A.How to Reuse Water B.How to Save Water C.The Thirsty World D.The Polluted Water Researchers said they had found out that there was once an ancient fresh water lake on Mars that might have been able to support life. A.the Earth B.Venus C.Mars D.the Moon 2.The following biological elements EXCEPT ________ have been found on Mars according to the analysis. A.oxygen B.nitrogen C.hydrogen D.carbon dioxide 3.The underlined word “habitable” in the last paragraph probably means “________” in Chinese. A.可居住的 B.无法生存的 C.习惯的 D.不可能的 4.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage? A.The researchers thought it impossible for a fresh water lake to exist on Mars. No matter who we are, where we are, or what we do, we cannot live without water. B.Doing more surveys about how to save water. C.Letting governments deal with water problems. D.Starting World Water Day to stop wasting water. 3.How is the text organized? (①= Paragraph 1,②= Paragraph 2,……) A. B. C. D. 4.What is the main idea of this text? A.Most countries fail to solve water problems. B.Countries have taken steps to protect water. C.China calls on other countries to save water. D.Industries are the main cause for wastewater. 重难语篇提升练 The Water Authority (水务局) in Shenzhen, Guangdong province is encouraging citizens to save water as the special economic zone experiences its worst drought (干旱) since 1963. Zhang Jia’an, director of the Water Authority, said Shenzhen has been facing its worst drought since people created the city. “The drought that began hitting the city in late autumn will probably continue through the whole winter and the coming spring and summer,” Zhang said on Wednesday. In addition to less rainfall this year, Zhang said another reason for the water shortage is the city’s fast growing population, which means the city is using more and more water in recent years. To deal with the water shortage, the city government has encouraged citizens to save and recycle water. For example, water flowers with water used to wash rice, and clean toilets with water used to wash clothes. Cutting down bathing time by one minute every day can save water as well. Besides, don’t keep the water running when brushing teeth or washing hands. Xu Weiqiang, a citizen of Shenzhen’s Futian district, said he now receives text messages every day telling him about the city’s serious drought and the action to save water. “Water for home use in Shenzhen has not yet been affected,” Xu said. But large water users, for example, some companies and large factories like his, are said to have been asked to cut down water consumption (消耗), he said. 1.Why is the Water Authority encouraging Shenzhen citizens to save water? A.It has been seldom raining in Shenzhen since 1963. B.The population grows at the fastest speed in 2021. C.The city has its worst drought which began in late autumn.
