Fantastic Coastal Celebrations
There’s no better way to feel the soul of a place than by diving headfirst into a local festival, when communities come alive and celebrate with joy. Here are some costal celebrations around the world.
Fête du Citron, Menton, France
Locals in the French Riviera town have been cultivating lemon trees since the 16th century and, each February, they honour their beloved fruit with a two-week carnival. The town becomes a lemon wonderland, featuring giant artworks made from 150 tons of lemons and oranges. In addition to parades, there are visits to local producers and many lemon-related dishes to enjoy at the town’s restaurants.
Ocean Scilly Festival, Isles of Scilly, UK
The Ocean Festival, now in its third year, is already making waves. Held on all five islands of this island group, the event highlights the area’s rich maritime heritage. Activities include exploring tide pools, boat rowing, visiting sunken ships, swimming at sunset, watching seals, and kayaking. On land, visitors can walk along scenic coastal paths and see fields of wildflowers.
Songkran Festival, Thailand
The Songkran Festival in Thailand marks the Thai New Year, when locals offer fragrant waters to religious shrines (圣地) and children wash the hands of their elders. On the streets, Songkran’s traditions take on in the form of a water fight. Locals use powerful water guns and water balloons to spray everyone, including tourists. In addition to the water fun, there are also music, traditional parades, and ceremonies at temples.
Hermanus Whale Festival, South Africa
After months in the icy waters of the Southern Ocean, hundreds of grand southern right whales travel to the warmer shores near Hermanus, which is 75 miles west of Cape Town and famous for whale watching. “Wormy! Wormy! Come here, Wormy!” I’m 7 years old, arms wrapping around my legs, while a group of older kids tease (揶揄) me on the playground with the nickname that would bother me throughout my childhood.
The moniker (绰号) came from my surname, Worman (although pronounced “War-mon”, not “Worm-man”, my classmates were not sensitive enough to tell the difference), and the simple act of rescuing a worm from being unceremoniously (粗暴地) cut in half. How clever they must have felt when they put two and two together, and how annoying it was for me. From then on, I disliked my rare surname and the teasing that came with it.
According to the Internet Surname Database, Worman originates from the old English term for a skilled craftsman. Another website goes as far as to link its origins to the kings of Mercia. While there don’t seem to be any famous Wormans in recent history, we’re a hardworking group, holding down jobs as butchers, painters and laborers in England since the early 1800s.
I suffered through being a Worman as a child, so when Facebook came along in my teens, I saw it as a chance to reinvent myself. I went by Evelyn Rose-my pretty, delicate middle name that drew praise and compliments from those around me. I felt more confident than ever.
After university, however, I became less critical of my surname. Meeting students from different backgrounds helped shift my perspective (观点); I came across surnames far more wonderful and unusual than mine. Laughing with others about the uniqueness of our names became a surprising source of connection.
I finally let go of disliking my surname after signing up to the website Ancestry. com. In the past 100 years, roughly 200,000 surnames have disappeared from England and Wales, according to the website. Family trees are littered with surnames that come and go, but mine hangs on. This feels oddly satisfying. Worman is mine, It’s not “pretty”, but it’s memorable — and it’s survived.
Now married and in my early 30s, I’ve become fiercely protective of my surname. When our son arrived last summer, we decided on a double-barrelled (由两部分组成的) surname, honoring both sides of his heritage (传承). “Worman” will, hopefully, stand the test of another generation.
24.Why did the author dislike her surname as a child?
A.It was hard to pronounce. B.It had an ordinary origin.
C.It means something she disliked. D.It led to constant teasing.
25.How did the author feel about using her middle name in her teens?
A.Ashamed. B.Embarrassed. C.Regretful, D.Satisfied.
26.What led the author to develop a sense of pride in her surname?
A.Learning about its history in a website. B.Receiving encouragement from her friends.
C.Meeting people from diverse backgrounds. D.Becoming more socially confident.
27.What does the author’s decision about her son’s surname suggest?
A.A fear of losing her identity. B.A respect for her family’s heritage.
C.A rejection of past criticism. D.A desire to promote her surname.

Mo Wilde’s fascinating book, Free Food: Wild Plants and How to Eat Them, makes the case for connecting with nature by finding your cuisine beyond supermarket shelves.
A couple of years ago, the thin branches of an elder (接骨木) bush inched through the open blinds of my apartment building, gradually forming what I can only describe as a piece of living wallpaper. Mother Nature was breaking into our boundaries — reminding us who’s boss. I thought it was fantastic, but the householder did not. A tree surgeon was called in.
Mo Wilde would have had other ideas. In Free Food, she suggests using elder leaves when cooking potatoes: they have a similar taste to parsley, a plant used as a herb in cooking. This simple way bridges the gap that middlemen, such as supermarkets and grocery shops, have placed between us and the natural world. “We are nature,” Wilde writes. “And making good use of more wild food into our diets will make us more conscious of that.”
Free Food advocates for integration, not complete replacement. For instance, try using leaves instead of tin foil for wrapping delicate food when barbecuing. Tables, like the “Wild Spice Conversion Chart” make wild garlic look downright basic. Do you know sneezewort produces a similar taste to Sichuan pepper? Her suggestions even involve using plants for medicinal teas and household items. Wilde’s tone is encouraging and her expertise and experience make you trust her, and her enthusiasm makes you turn the page.
Readers whose home is their kitchen will notice that Wilde provides more ideas than recipes. Since reading Free Food, I’ve found myself picking leaves and seeing whether I can identify them without an app, though there is always an app that would instantly tell me what they are. The appeal of collecting is that it forces you to pay attention to your surroundings and build a relationship with nature, one plant at a time.
28.Why did the householder call in a tree surgeon?
A.To remove the elder branches. B.To repair the blinds.
C.To get another elder tree planted. D.To replace the wallpaper.
29.Where does Mo Wilde see a gap?
A.Between elder leaves and parsley. B.Between our diet and nature gifts.
C.Between wild food and our awareness. D.Between supermarkets and grocery shops.
30.What can the underlined word “sneezewort” refer to in paragraph 4?
A.A health-care tea. B.A big leaf used as a package.
C.A household cleaning article. D.A wild plant with a hot flavor.
31.What change has the author undergone after reading Free Food?
A.Falling in love with cooking. B.Starting to collect leaves for recipes.
C.Coming into closer contact with nature. D.Learning to draw on apps to explore plants.

“What do I want to eat? What else could I eat? I just ate, but what other food is there? These are some of the thoughts that may come into the mind of someone dealing with food noise,” says Dr. Jeff Alfonsi, an internal medicine specialist. Simply put, it’s the constant thought or mental dialogue about food. And people are being more outspoken about it, from social media users sharing their experience online to famous faces like Oprah Winfrey talking about it.
Weight loss medications have been playing a major role in bringing the conversation on food noise to the forefront. One unexpected outcome from GLP-1 medications has been patients reporting the reduction of food noise, according to experts.
Food noise can also contribute to overeating or eating the wrong foods for your body. It can also present itself in other ways, including: thinking about when, what or how much to eat; not being present in your current meal — constantly thinking ahead about what you will eat; feeling guilty after eating something, etc. But don’t confuse food noise with normal hunger signals.
Anyone can experience food noise, but it can have a more pronounced impact on certain groups. Food noise has a particularly negative impact on people struggling with weight loss, people in stressful environments, teenagers, and even athletes. And dangerously, those with eating disorders can often be most sensitive to food noise.
There are both genetic (基因的) and social factors that contribute to food noise. When we look back at our history, having a high degree of food noise was probably really valuable for survival. You needed nutrients, you needed food, and those people who were really focused on that maybe helped get food and store it, and it led to a survival advantage.
There are multiple ways to help quiet food noise, according to experts. GLP-1s and weight-loss pills can be effective for patients dealing with food noise. Next, try doing other things like exercise or meditation (冥想) to help stop the food noise. Working with a registered dietitian is another way to work through food noise.
32.Why does the author mention Oprah Winfrey in paragraph 1?
A.To promote celebrities’ views on dieting.
B.To suggest she is an expert in food noise.
C.To show food noise is a widely discussed topic.
D.To indicate she has a problem with food noise.
33.Which of the following groups may be most affected by food noise?
A.People with eating disorders. B.People focusing on healthy food.
C.People who are good at meditation. D.People with a high survival advantage.
34.What is the purpose of the text?
A.To provide a detailed history of food noise.
B.To enhance the use of weight loss medications.
C.To explain the concept of food noise and its impact.
D.To encourage people to seek medical help for food noise.
35.Where can you probably read the text?
A.In a sci-fi report. B.In a cooking book.
C.In a travel guide. D.In a health magazine.

Sarah, a woman overwhelmed by life’s struggles, stumbled toward her tiny apartment. She kept shaking in the storm, tears mixing with cold rain running down her pale face. When lightning flashed, it lit up the painful cuts on her hands — wounds from broken glass when she fell earlier. As she tried to open the door, the old keys kept slipping from her freezing fingers. All she wanted was to fall into a deep sleep and forget everything.
Years earlier, her husband disappeared, leaving her to raise their daughter Lily alone. Then she lost her job at the factory. Soon after, doctors found Lily had a rare heart condition. But fate twisted the knife deeper: during a routine checkup, Sarah learned that she had lung cancer — a sickness probably passed down from her mother. Hiding her illness to protect Lily, she sold her belongings, skipped meals, and worked night shifts at a diner, trying to keep life as normal as possible for her daughter.
That rainy night, while delivering food on her old bike, Sarah suddenly couldn’t breathe. Gasping for air, she collapsed on a wet bridge, her head hitting the pavement. Blood mixed with rainwater as she faded in and out of awareness. After lying dazed for minutes, she staggered up, left her bike behind, and dragged herself home like a ghost. She fell onto her worn-out couch, her labored breaths echoing in the darkness.
Meanwhile, others were searching. Paramedic (急救人员) Laura had barely touched her cold sandwich when another call came in. “A woman had collapsed on the bridge. She looked dead,” a scared witness reported. Laura’s team, already exhausted from eighteen emergencies that day, raced through the rain. At the scene, they found only a bent bicycle and faint pink stains on the wet pavement. Checking nearby security cameras, they watched Sarah stagger away from the site. The trail led to an apartment building with broken hallway lights.

Scientists in Germany have cast doubt on a previously believed assumption that the processing speed of our brains starts to decline from the age of twenty. Until now, it has been thought that our level of understanding peaks when we are twenty, and declines thereafter. Lead researcher doctor m von krauss of Heidelberg university, offered hope to older people who worry about increasing forgetfulness or reduced brain power. He said mental abilities were still powerful at the age of sixty and do not decrease before then. The study was based on data from over 1~1 million people aged between ten and eighty years old. The results showed that our mental processing speed remains relatively constant until the age of sixty, but does start to decline from our seventh decade. The researchers said people's mental processing speed actually increases in their twenties and remains high until sixty. Doctor vonrauser said until older adulthood, the speed of information processing in the task they studied hardly changed. He added that older people do take longer to make decisions, but said this was because we become more cautious and responsible as we age. The study could cast light on diseases such as Alzheimers.

In September, its three-day festival combines opportunities for whale sightings with an eco-minded programme that tells the story of local marine life and conservation efforts.

“Wormy!
【答案】24.D 25.D 26.A 27.B
根据第一段“I’m 7 years old, arms wrapping around my legs, while a group of older kids tease (揶揄) me on the playground with the nickname that would bother me throughout my childhood. (我七岁的时候,双臂环抱着双腿,一群年纪稍大的孩子在操场上用一个绰号揶揄我,这个绰号困扰了我整个童年。)”及第二段“From then on, I disliked my rare surname and the teasing that came with it.(从那时起,我开始讨厌自己这个罕见的姓氏,以及随之而来的嘲笑)”可知,作者童年厌恶姓氏是因为它导致自己不断被嘲笑。故选D项。
根据第四段“I went by Evelyn Rose-my pretty, delicate middle name that drew praise and compliments from those around me. I felt more confident than ever.(我用伊夫林·罗斯这个名字——我美丽、精致的中间名,它赢得了周围人的赞扬和称赞。我从未像现在这样自信过。)”可知,作者在青少年时期使用中间名时因获得认可而感到自信且满意。故选D项。
26.细节理解题。根据第六段“I finally let go of disliking my surname after signing up to the website Ancestry. com. In the past 100 years, roughly 200,000 surnames have disappeared from England and Wales, according to the website. Family trees are littered with surnames that come and go, but mine hangs on. This feels oddly satisfying. (在注册了Ancestry.com网站后,我终于不再讨厌自己的姓氏。根据该网站的数据,在过去 100 年里,英格兰和威尔士大约有 20 万个姓氏消失了。家谱中充斥着各种来来去去的姓氏,但我的姓氏却保留了下来。这让人感到一种莫名的满足。)”可知,作者通过网站了解到姓氏历经百年未消失的历史传承,从而对其产生自豪感。故选A项。
根据最后一段“When our son arrived last summer, we decided on a double-barrelled (由两部分组成的) surname, honoring both sides of his heritage (传承). “Worman” will, hopefully, stand the test of another generation. (去年夏天我们的儿子出生后,我们决定采用双姓,以纪念他来自父母双方的传承。希望“Worman”这个姓氏能经得起下一代的考验。)”可知,作者为儿子选择复姓的决定,体现了对家族传承的尊重和延续姓氏的期望。故选B项。
C
【答案】28.A 29.B 30.D 31.C
根据第二段“A couple of years ago, the: thin branches of an elder (接骨木) bush inched through the open blinds of my apartment building, gradually forming what I can only describe as a piece of living wallpaper. Mother Nature was breaking into our boundaries-reminding us who’s boss. I thought it was fantastic, but the householder did not.
根据第三段中“In Free Food, she suggests using elder leaves when cooking potatoes: they have a similar taste to parsley, a plant used as a herb in cooking. This simple way bridges the gap that middlemen, such as supermarkets and grocery shops, have placed between us and the natural world.(在Free Food一书中,她建议在烹饪土豆时使用接骨木叶:它们的味道与烹饪中用作药草的欧芹相似。
根据最后一段中“Since reading Free Food, I’ve found myself picking leaves and seeing whether I can identify them without an app, though there is always an app that would instantly tell me what they are. The appeal of collecting is that it forces you to pay attention to your surroundings and build a relationship with nature, one plant at a time.(自从阅读了Free Food之后,我发现自己会摘树叶,看看自己是否可以在没有应用程序的情况下识别它们,尽管总有一个应用程序可以立即告诉我它们是什么。收集的吸引力在于,它迫使你关注周围的环境,并与自然建立关系,一次一株植物)”可知,读完Free Food作者与大自然有了更亲密的接触,故选C。
D

Or perhaps you have non-sports skills, like drawing, painting, singing, playing a musical instrument, writing, or acting. Just explore talents that you feel good about.
Exercise regularly.
Exercise can help you look well and feel good about yourself. Good physiques (体格) don’t just happen. They take hard work, regular workouts, and a healthy diet. A healthy habit can be as simple as exercising 20 minutes to 1 hour three days a week. 38
Respect your body!
Practice good habits to respect your body. 39 And they can help you build a positive body image.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
A loud knock interrupted the silence.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Laura later shared their rescue experience on social media.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
A loud knock interrupted the silence. Hearing no response, Laura exchanged a worried glance with her partner. They pushed the door open, flashlights cutting through the dim apartment. Sarah lay motionless on the couch, her skin ghostly pale, lips tinged blue. Laura knelt beside her, checking for a pulse. “Weak but present,” she muttered, swiftly strapping an oxygen mask over Sarah’s face. As they lifted her onto the stretcher, Sarah’s trembling hand clutched a faded photo of Lily tucked in her pocket. “Stay with us,” Laura urged, her voice steady but urgent. Rain lashed the windows as sirens wailed through the night, carrying Sarah toward a hospital bed she could no longer avoid.
Laura later shared their rescue experience on social media. Her post — a raw account of hidden illness and a paramedic’s persistence — went viral overnight. Strangers donated to cover Lily’s surgery and Sarah’s treatments, while a local clinic offered free cancer care. Reporters interviewed Laura, who simply said, “Everyone deserves a fighting chance.” When Sarah regained strength, she hugged Lily tighter, whispering, “We’re not alone anymore.” The broken hallway lights in their apartment building were fixed by volunteers, symbolizing the unexpected brightness piercing their darkest hour. Years later, a thank-you letter to Laura hung beside Lily’s healthy heartbeat scans, a quiet reminder that compassion had rewritten their story one breath at a time.
