(2025·华中师范大学附中模拟)Mark Brown, 57, had been making films for 30 years, but he found himself feeling tired of it. “I thought, things can only go downhill.” Brown knew he needed to do something else — but what? A few years earlier, he had bought his childhood house and moved in. While Brown wondered about a second career in gardening, he heard a different internal voice. “That child who used to love drawing whispered to me down the years,” he said. Some unacknowledged longing in him was brought out.
There was a great oak tree near his home. It had stood out to his young self as a “fantastical giant — a treasure home to birds, insects and animals. There was a cave inside. We used to squeeze in through this hole.” He decided to lock himself away for two months to draw it in all its glorious detail.
“While I was drawing,” he said, “there came moments when it was as though the tree was drawing itself. I had spent so much time playing in it. I could feel it. It was deep inside me.” His finished oak held “a real power”, he said. “As you walk towards it, it just grows.” Brown became a tree portraitist.
Over the next few years, he travelled across Britain and spent days with the trees selected with the help of the Ancient Tree Forum, the Tree Council and the Woodland Trust. Brown has started work on a 20drawing series of Britain's most important ash trees. “These beautiful old ash trees are going to be lost to us,” he says. “They are 350 years old and they are dying because of a disease that we've spread.”
Drawing is not only an act of care and a demand for preservation, but it “gives me that interface between my passion for the natural world and my creativity,” Brown says. It has also given him a different perspective on the passage of time. “I'm an old man yet I'm only 71, and some of the trees I've drawn are 1,000 years old. When I'm with them and when I draw them, I think about the end of my life and the brief nature of human life that passes momentarily beneath them.”

(2025·遵义模拟)Look! Dawson is immersing himself in sculpting a pot while Molly is buried in learning to weave. Leo is waving his paint brush on the paper and Jessica is killing her time through knitting. It's no surprise to see scenes like these. Many of us like to make things which we can use or give as gifts. Crafting is certainly a hobby that's seen a return and growth, and those who pursue it claim getting creative improves their mood.
Many people, especially those who work from home, are turning to hobbies such as craft making as a way to relieve their working burnout. Knitting, weaving, pottery and painting are all crafts that have seen a renaissance, and many of them are being done by youngsters.
Besides turning to arts and crafts as an interesting pastime, people take it as a way to make a bit of pocket money. A large number of websites, such as Etsy and Folksy, allow people to sell their homemade handicrafts. Richard Sennett, author of The Craftsman, told the BBC: “A lot of people are finding their day jobs pretty empty, while learning a craft provides a real satisfaction. It's a skill — things like carpentry and weaving are mentally and physically encouraging, and people get essential pleasure out of that kind of work.”
The Internet has also been the paradise to turn to to buy craft tools which help you get started with your craftmaking projects, such as candle making. But many people are enjoying designing and making things from the beginning and are doing it just for pleasure or to occupy their minds — and there's evidence that it's good for us as well. According to research conducted by BBC Arts, even the briefest time spent on a creative pastime such as painting, pottery or playing the piano, has an impact on our wellbeing and emotions. The survey of around 80,000 people found being creative can help avoid stress, free up mind space and improve selfdevelopment, which helps build selfrespect.

(2025·宣城模拟)At first glance, it seems to be Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer's masterpiece Girl with a Pearl Earring. 9 Wearing two glowing earrings, there's a slightly inhuman shade of red on the girl's face.
Look strange? 10 Chosen from 3,482 submitted images based on the Vermeer's masterpiece, the Algenerated work was displayed at the Mauritshuis Museum in the Netherlands in March. The designer looked on the experience of literally replacing the famous painting by one of his AI images crazy and completely surreal.
11 Though Mauritshuis press officer Boris de Munnick insisted that it was a nice picture and a creative process, many people questioned whether it could be called art and if it was qualified to be shown in the museum gallery. 12 It was regarded as a disrespect for the masterpiece of Vermeer and also for any working artist.
In fact, this is not the first time that people have debated AI's role in creativity. 13 But the technology has now become widely available for regular everyday use and the practice of using AI image generators to make art has become more common.
A.Coming from a museum, it's really embarrassing.
B.However, the AI image raised a fierce argument.
C.But look more closely and you may find something different about it.
D.One common concern is whether AIgenerated works break copyright laws.
E.Dutch artist Iris Compiet described the image on display as almost Frankensteinish.
F.It's actually an image made by Berlinbased designer Julian van Dieken using artificial intelligence.
G.The emergence of such AI works is believed by many to weaken the enthusiasm of artists with creative skills.
