①“How was your weekend?” “Did you see the game on TV last night?” “Isn't the weather beautiful today?”These questions and the answers to them are examples of “small talk”—the short, friendly conversations that people have with friends and partners(同伴).
②Some people avoid making small talk at work. They think they shouldn't talk about things that aren't important for the job, or their partners will think they aren't serious about their work. And some people just don't enjoy making conversation about themselves.
③But small talk is important! Knowing how to make small talk is a skill that can help you a lot. By making conversation, you show that you are friendly and interested in your partners. You become a better team member. If you don't make small talk, others might feel uncomfortable around you and think you're unfriendly. Peter Harper, a manager at the Apex Company in the US, says, “We always look for friendly workers who know how to communicate with each other and with our customers.”
④Here are some tips(建议) for successful small talk. You can talk about safe topics(话题) such as the weather, sports, hobbies, TV
programmes, and famous people like movie stars, singers, etc. You can also share some information about your family such as birthday parties and other family events(重要事情), but don't share very personal information like family problems. You can talk about the news too. But avoid topics on money, age, weight and so on.
⑤Listening is an important part of small talk. Listen carefully to what the other person is saying and ask questions. Don't just talk about yourself. And remember to smile! Making conversation takes practice. The more you do it, the better you'll be at making small talk!

The lion dance is an important part of traditional Chinese festivals, especially Chinese New Year. Lion dancers show a lot of funny moves. One holds the head and the other holds the body of the lion. The lion troupes(演出团) usually appear with a “laughing Buddha”. He wears a mask(面罩) and makes fun of the lion to make him jump, lie down, etc.
As they move along the streets, people along the way will “feed” hongbao with money inside to the lion through its mouth. This is supposed to bring good luck and wealth.
Businesses will hang some greens like lettuces(生菜) from a high place with hongbao inside. The team will have to “pick” the lettuces. Usually the dancer in the body position is required to lift and support the dancer in the head position so they can reach the lettuces together. They “eat” the money and spit(吐出) out the lettuces, throwing the fresh leaves around to “spread” good luck and also as a symbol of a “fresh start” for the new year.
The head of the lion has tools inside with which the front dancer controls the lion's eyes, mouth and ears. In the lion's forehead there is
normally a mirror, so that the evil spirits(邪灵) will be afraid and fall back when they see their own faces.
The lion dance ends with a message of good luck that comes out of the lion's mouth and a burst of firecrackers(鞭炮) to keep the evil spirits away!
