(24-25高二下·黑龙江佳木斯·期末)Billionaire Elon Musk on Wednesday announced that he has formed a new artificial intelligence (Al) company, xAI, which has employed researchers from Google, Open AI and other top technology companies. The goal, Musk tweeted, is “to understand reality.” xAI is a separate company from Musk’s other businesses, such as Tesla and Twitter, but will work closely with them, according to the new company’s website.
Musk isn’t a novice to AI since Tesla uses the technology in its cars. While xAI didn’t mention what projects it will be working on, the company noted that its team of Ⅱ researchers are drawn from top tech companies such as Microsoft Research, Open AI and Google.
Musk suggested that the reason he picked July 12, 2023, to announce the start of xAI is connected with a science fiction (科幻小说) classic, Douglas Adams’ “The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.” In his tweet, he noted that adding the date 7-12-23 equals 42, which the work of the fiction famously assumes is the answer to life. “The goal of xAI is to understand the true nature of the universe,” the xAI website states.
The company said it will be advised by Dan Hendrycks, director of the Center for Al Safety. Hendrycks pointed out where AI could cause problems. “AIs could be used by bad people to make new deadly bioweapons (生物武器), ”Hendrycks said in May. “Or people could make Al that tries to hurt people on purpose. If this Al was really smart, it could be a big danger to all of us.”
The first time xAI was shown to the public was after Musk talked about it in April to the former Fox News host Tucker Carlson. Musk told Carlson that OpenAI's ChatGPT was a bit biased (有偏见的) and that he wanted to create a different tool that would be a super honest AI that tries to learn how everything in the world works.
The new company reflected (反映) Musk’s long-voiced concerns about a future in which AI systems could present a risk to human existence. The idea, Musk said, is that an AI that wants to understand humanity is less likely to destroy it.

(24-25高二下·吉林四平·期末)“Someone once asked me, ‘What’s the tool you would want to give any student?’ And I said, ‘A mask and snorkel (潜水通气管) set,’” the ocean biologist Thys says in a video. And Thys explains, “Ninety-eight percent of the living space on this planet is the ocean. It’s worth a view.”
Thys has devoted her career to seeing the ocean, and to helping others watch the great diversity of the underwater world. A big part of what motivates her work is the chance to let people develop a sense of respect for the grandness of the ocean, and to get people to participate in efforts to protect endangered ocean ecosystems.
Since studying ocean biology, Thys has focused her research on how sea animals live. One animal she particularly studies is the ocean sunfish. “It’s so different from any other fish,” says Thys. “It looks like a mistake. Where does the tail go?” Thys adds. “The sunfish provides an entry point to understanding more about the behaviour of creatures in the ocean, and about how environmental changes impact underwater ecosystems.”
Thys’s work also takes her above ground, where she’s looking at ways to create new connections between human populations and natural environments to help address social and environmental challenges. For instance, she’s working on nature’s effects on mental well-being.
Thys’s passion for her work is evident in every lecture, video, and public appearance she makes. Using the media, Thys encourages people to learn about the ocean and love it. Due to many ocean research projects and activities from the media, Thys is up to her neck in work every day. She could hardly spare plenty of time for a good rest. (24-25高二下·广东汕尾·期末)A recent deep-sea expedition off Chile’s coast has revealed extraordinary marine (海洋的) discoveries, including more than 100 potentially new species and four massive underwater mountains.
Between Jan. 8 and Feb. 11, researchers on board the Schmidt Ocean Institute’s (SOI) research ship Falkor explored the seafloor off the coast of Chile. The team mapped 20,400 square miles (52,800 km2) of seafloor, uncovering four seamounts. The largest, named Solito (“alone” in Spanish), rises 11,581 feet (3,530m) above the seafloor, making it more than four times taller than the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, which stands at 2,717 feet (828m) tall. Using an underwater robot, scientists examined 10 seamounts, which revealed more than 100 species that the scientists suspect are new to science, including corals, sponges, sea urchins, mollusks and crustaceans.
“This is far beyond our expectations,” said lead scientist Javier Sellanes. “You always expect to find new species in these remote and poorly explored areas, but the amount we found, especially for some groups like sponges, is mind-blowing.”
The researchers took samples of the creatures and will now begin studying each one to determine whether it is a newfound species. “Full species identification can take many years,” SOI’s executive director Jyotika Virmani said, and the “incredible number of samples” could make this process even longer. The researchers also noted that a majority of the species make their homes in sensitive underwater habitats like coral and sponge communities. Human activities like mining and fishing threaten these areas. While new species within the Juan Fernández and Nazca-Desventuradas marine parks are legally protected from these threats, the seamounts along the Nazca and Salas y Gómez Ridges are currently protected.
This research trip is the latest of several SOI expeditions that have mapped seamounts in the southeast Pacific in recent years. The institute previously mapped four other huge seamounts during an expedition off the coast of Chile and Peru. Such “biological hotspots” are critical to understanding marine biodiversity, said SOI director Jyotika Virmani, as they “advance our knowledge of life on Earth”.

(2025·江西·模拟预测)The Produce Aggregation Program, run by Southside Community Land Trust (SCLT), connects small-scale urban farmers with local communities in need of healthy food. The program collects and processes crops from multiple farmers, combining them into larger quantities for wholesale distribution. This helps overcome challenges small farms face, such as limited production capacity and lack of access to processing facilities and distribution networks.
SCLT operates a farm-to-market processing center and manages logistics (后勤) for regular distribution. The program supports 27 farmers, many of whom are refugees, immigrants, or members of marginalized communities. While many of the farmers still rely on farmer markets, the program provides a more stable income source.
Twice weekly during the growing season, SCLT orders produce from participating farmers, who deliver it to the food hub. There, it is sorted and packed into $20-value bags, each containing a variety of fresh produce. These are distributed at no cost through community partners such as clinics, recreation centers, and childcare programs. Some clinics distribute the produce through VeggieRx, a program where doctors prescribe (开处方) vegetables to patients.
The program is currently funded by the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program, which was launched to support underserved farmers and increase food access. However, funding uncertainty remains a challenge. Rising costs, supply chain issues, limited land availability, and climate change all add strain to food assistance programs.
Despite these obstacles, SCLT continues its year-round work to improve food access. In addition to the Produce Aggregation Program, the nonprofit supports 60 community gardens, offers training, and runs educational programs and internships. Altogether, its efforts provide healthy, culturally relevant food to about 1, 200 families annually, with the support of local farmers, volunteers, and community partners.

A.Improve their production ability. B.Gather crops for large sales.
C.Offer free processing equipment. D.Sharpen their planting skills.
2.How does the Produce Aggregation Program ensure stable income for farmers?
A.By hiring them to do farm work. B.By adding produce variety.
C.By counting on farmer markets. D.By providing orders regularly.
3.What does the underlined word “strain” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Burden. B.Gain. C.Hope. D.Duty.
4.What would be a suitable title for the text?
A.Fighting Urban Poverty B.New Struggles for Small Farms
C.Feeding the Neighbors D.New Trends in Urban Farming
(24-25高三下·重庆·阶段练习)Bronze Age desert dwellers (居住者)unearthed from graves in what’s now northwest China were buried with cheese spread on their heads and necks — perhaps as a snack packed for the afterlife.
A decade after the dairy discovery, scientists have sequenced DNA from the 3,600-year-old cheese, the oldest in the archaeological record. The analysis revealed how the Xiaohe people made cheese, showing the way humans made use of microbes (微生物) to improve their food and how microbes can be used to track cultural influences through the ages. The findings, published Wednesday in the journal Cell, open a “new frontier in ancient DNA studies,” said Christina Warinner from Harvard University, who wasn’t involved in the research.
A team led by Chinese paleogeneticist Qiaomei Fu identified goat and cattle DNA in samples of the cheese. The researchers were also able to sequence DNA of microbes contained in the cheese, confirming it was kefir, a type of cheese that’s still widely made and eaten today.
Fu’s team discovered that the three cheese samples from the graves contained Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens, which is commonly found in present-day kefir cheese. Today, there are two major groups of Lactobacillus bacteria — one that originated in Russia and another from Tibet, China, according to the study. When Fu and her colleagues compared Lactobacillus kefiranofaciens from the ancient kefir cheese with the modern-day species, they found that it was closely related to a less common group of Lactobacillus that originated in Tibet.
“The bacterium’s origins challenge a long-held belief that kefir began only in Russia”, Fu said. “By examining dairy products, we’ve gained a clearer picture of ancient human life and their interactions with the world. This is just the beginning.”
It was remarkable that not only had the cheese survived but that it was possible to sequence DNA from the foodstuff, Fu said. “Ancient DNA analysis, especially on microbes, faces significant technical problems, largely due to the presence of modern bacteria in the samples,” he added.
1.What did the analysis of the ancient cheese reveal?
A.The burial customs of the Xiaohe people.
B.The effect of diet on health in ancient China.
C.The development of ancient cheese-making tools.
D.The use of microbes to improve food and to track culture.
2.What can we learn about kefir cheese from Fu’s study?
A.It is the most popular modern-day type. B.It is not commonly consumed in Russia.
C.It might have originated in Russia and Tibet. D.It must have evolved considerably over time.
3.What does Fu think of the study?
A.Insightful. B.Inaccurate. C.Puzzling. D.Comprehensive.
4.What is the best title for the text?
A.The Origin of Cheese Calling for Further Research
B.DNA from Ancient Cheese Sequenced by Scientists
C.A Dairy Discovery Making for a Dietary Breakthrough

(24-25高二下·甘肃·期末)An 8-year-old Pekingese (北京哈巴狗) is the winner of this year’s World’s Ugliest Dog Contest. This is the first victory for Wild Thang, a 5-time competitor in the annual event held at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in the northern California city of Petaluma. The Pekingese, whose owner Ann Lewis received $5,000 in prize money, placed second three times before coming out on top this year.
With his long and extremely fluffy coat and stick-out tongue, Wild Thang, who grew up in Los Angeles but now resides in North Bend, Oregon, was one of eight dogs competing for the famous title on Friday evening.
“Wild Thang was a fan favourite,” said California State Treasurer Fiona Ma, one of the judges. “The fact that he had been competing for five times and only came in second, kind of like the bridesmaid (伴娘) and never the bride, really tugged at our heartstrings. He deserved to win.” Ma added some fun facts about Wild Thang. “He’s never had a haircut,” she said. “He likes to sleep on ice packs, believe it or not. And he is just a sweet dog.”
Most of the dogs in the contest are rescues. According to his Biography (传记) on the fair’s press site, Wild Thang contracted distemper (瘟热) from a rescue when he was young. “He survived, but not without permanent damage,” his biography states. “His teeth did not grow in, causing his tongue to stay out and his right front leg paddles.”
“This world-known event celebrates the imperfections that make all dogs special and unique,” states the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest website. “The annual World’s Ugliest Dog Contest is not about making fun of ‘ugly’ dogs, but having fun with some wonderful characters and showing the world that these dogs are really beautiful!”
1.Which is true about Wild Thang?
A.He is a competitor from Beijing. B.He hadn’t won the first prize before.
C.He has long hair and frequent haircuts. D.He has taken part in the contest for 3 times.
2.What does the underlined phrase “tugged at our heartstrings” mean?
A.Made us annoyed. B.Amused us.
C.Caused us to feel pity. D.Let us become nervous.
3.How did Wild Thang get its wonderful character?
A.He was born like that. B.He was beaten by a thief.
C.He was bitten by a wolf. D.He was infected during a rescue.
4.What is the purpose of the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest?
A.To attract people’s attention on animals. B.To lead people to accept imperfections.
C.To warn people to stay away from ugly animals. D.To call on people to rescue ugly animals.

I shouldn’t have done that,” he admitted regretfully.
Recalling the terrifying moment, he continued, while waiting for his group, he heard a loud noise and saw a wall of snow racing towards him. Charles had no time to react. Within seconds, he was blinded, everything turned white, and then there was silence. As time passed, Charles started to panic, fearing he wouldn’t be able to breathe. After what seemed like hours, he heard barking and realized that the specially trained mountain rescue dogs had found him using their incredible sense of smell. Once freed, his biggest concern was that there were still other people buried under the snow. Luckily, no others were caught.
Incredibly grateful to the dogs and the rescue team, he promised to thank them in person as soon as he was well enough to leave the hospital and he agreed that he was a very lucky man.
1.Why is the Burj Khalifa mentioned in paragraph 2?
A.To criticize human construction projects.
B.To explain why the expedition took place in Chile.

重难语篇提升练

D.3,600-year-old Cheese Found in Ancient Graves in China
