Long ago ,in a remote village ,there was a place known as the House of 1 ,000 Mirrors ,which a great number of people visited every day.Nobody knew why the house had been built with so many mirrors.
A small happy little dog heard of this place and decided to pay a visit himself. He ran all of his way with a happy heart. So long was the way that he spent many days on his way. When he arrived , although tired ,he jumped happily up the stairs to the doorway of the house. There was a hole in the door.He looked through the hole with his ears lifting high and his tail shaking as fast as it could. To his great surprise ,he found himself looking at 1 ,000 other happy little dogs with their tails shaking just as fast as his.He laughed a lot ,and was answered with 1 ,000 great smiles just as warm and kind as his. As he left the House ,he said to himself ,"This is a wonderful place.I will come back and visit it often. And I will tell all my friends to come here to enjoy the wonderful sight."
In this same village ,another little dog ,who was sad and in blue all the day ,also decided to visit the House. After running on the way for so long a time ,he felt tired as well as depressed. He slowly climbed the stairs and hung his head low as he looked into the hole in the door.To his great surprise , he saw the 1 ,000 unfriendly dogs looking at him ,so he barked at them right away.
Then he was terrified to see the 1 ,000 little dogs barking back at him.
Instead ,the happy little dog came back together with lots of good friends.
Passage 2
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的 词数应为150左右。
I used to be very active in sports and games when I was in primary school.I won the B Division long jump and was a good sprinter(短跑运动员). As a result ,I was chosen to represent the school in the long jump and relay events at the District Sports Meet. Before the sports meet ,I had put in a lot of hard work and dedication during the training sessions.I woke up early every morning to go for runs and did countless drills to improve my technique. My teammates and I supported and encouraged each other during training ,pushing ourselves to do better and achieve our goals.
The meet lasted two days.I had no events scheduled for the first day.So I kept myself busy by watching the others compete.Large tents were provided for the young competitors on one side of the track.Despite being assigned the last tent that was furthest from the track ,I made the best of the situation by decorating it with our school colours and creating a supportive atmosphere.
The next day ,I was getting ready for my events. The long jump was scheduled for the early afternoon ,followed by the 8×50 m relay later in the afternoon.I thought I was a pretty good jumper , but as the competition began ,I realized I was vastly outclassed. We finished our jumps ,and I came in fourth place ,just missing out on a medal.
That was disappointing ,but I reminded myself that we still had a chance in the 8×50m relay ,for which I was assigned to run the fifth leg.The race date arrived. We filed into our assigned spots and prepared for the race. After a tense minute or so ,I heard the starter's gun go off. When the first runners took off ,I watched nervously and excitedly as my team runners kept up with the others. As they got closer ,I realized we were at least in second place.
My turn arrived and I took the baton(接力棒)cleanly and began my run.
As a result,I left the meet empty-handed.
Passage 3
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。续写的词数应为150左右。
It is hot in late July in Washington ,D.C.Lisa was familiar with the heat waves.Every summer she and her brother Jamal came to stay with their grandmother for the month of July.
It was a hot afternoon.Suddenly it occurred to Lisa that there might be some secrets in the attic( 阁 楼 ) ,so she decided to take a look around there.
Up in the attic ,Lisa found everything was covered in a fine layer( 层 ) of dust. The heat in the house rose upwards.Lisa thought briefly about turning around and heading downstairs. But something pushed her to investigate the attic further. She had the sense that in these dusty boxes something important was waiting for her.
As Lisa began going through the boxes ,she came across a picture of a pretty girl with"Maud"
written across the bottom. She stared at the photograph.Maud was her grandmother ,and it was hard to believe that the wrinkled woman downstairs had been this laughing ,lovely girl.
"Lisa honey!"She heard her grandmother call."Come take a break and have some tea."Lisa went downstairs and took the picture with her."Grandma ,is this really you?"
Her grandmother laughed ,"What ,you can't believe it?Yes ,that's me;it was taken almost sixty years ago."
"You'd be surprised,Lisa,"her grandmother responded."Adults, all of us ,were once young and irresponsible like you."
"I don't think Mum was ever like that..."said Lisa. She couldn’t imagine her strict ,hardworking mother doing anything slightly irresponsible. Her mother held the family together and took care of Lisa and Jamal.
"Your mother..."her grandmother's voice faded(逐渐消失) as she carefully chose her words. "When your father died ,your mother was just a girl herself. You were a baby ,and Jamal was only two. She had to grow up fast. She loves you two so much ,and that's why she's so strict."
Lisa nodded. She knew her grandmother was right.Lisa finished her tea ,thanked her grandmother ,and turned to go back upstairs.
"Lisa!"her grandmother called ,as Lisa climbed the stairs."There's a box of your parents'things in the corner up there."
Opening the first letter ,she looked through until she saw her father’s signature:Daryl.
Passage 4

My name is John and I must share with you an event which took place on Flight 1553 out of DCA.
My wife and I were travelling to Miami to celebrate an achievement for her and as you can imagine ,we were looking forward to fun ,sun and laughter.
We boarded the aircraft ,without a care in the world. It was cold in Washington and we were ready for Florida.
Shortly after taking my seat ,I began to feel sick.I knew something wasn't right but just couldn’t find out what was happening.Being a doctor and a stubborn man ,I resisted efforts by my wife to call for assistance. As the aircraft began its departure roll ,I lost consciousness for a short amount of time.
As I came around ,I quickly realized a few things.Firstly ,something very bad had happened to me.Secondly ,the aircraft was too heavy with the fuel to go back home.Thirdly ,my loss of consciousness had been so deep that I found myself out of control. So not only did I have a medical issue to deal with ,but also I had to figure out how to deal with an embarrassing experience.
My wife gathered the crew as soon as it was safe to move about and I made my way to the washroom to attempt to clean up.I did my best and the flight crew members were so supportive ,checking on me often and reassuring me that there was nothing to be embarrassed about.
It was their sympathy and support that helped me so much.During the flight they kept watching over me and I suddenly had a small group of nurses ,bringing blankets ,food ,drinks and caring and smile.I was thankful to them.
Upon landing ,I remained in my seat ,allowing other people to go first.
Hearing that ,the captain left and returned a couple of minutes later with a pair of his own blue jeans.

Her mother said ,"Well ,it is a pretty necklace ,but it costs an awful lot of money.I can buy you the necklace ,but when we get home ,we should make up a list of housework that you can do to pay for the necklace."Jenny agreed immediately ,feeling a burst of joy.So her mother bought the pearl necklace for her.Jenny worked on her housework determinedly and earnestly every day.Soon Jenny paid off the pearls.
Jenny had a very loving daddy. When Jenny went to bed ,he would read Jenny her favourite story.
One night when he finished the story ,he said ,"Jenny ,do you love me?""Oh ,yes ,Daddy ,you know I love you ,"the little girl said delightedly ,with a broad smile on her face."Well ,then ,give me your pearls."Hearing that ,Jenny froze there ,an anxious expression twisting her face."Oh!Daddy ,not my pearls! But you can have Rosy ,my favourite doll.Remember her?You gave her to me last year for my birthday.Okay?""Oh no ,darling ,that’s okay."Her father brushed her cheek with a kiss ,gently and calmly."Good night ,little one."
A week later ,her father once again asked Jenny after her story ,"Do you love me?""Oh yes , Daddy ,you know I love you ,"the little girl murmured softly ,trying to escape from her father's eyes. On a cold windy day ,a poor boy tried to pay his way through school by selling goods door to door.
Wandering on the street ,he was not a successful seller. What's worse ,he found that he only had one dime( 一 角 硬 币 ) left. His empty stomach reminded him constantly that for days he hadn't eaten anything. He had no choice but to beg for a meal at the next house.Hesitantly he knocked at the door , thinking about what to say when it opened. However ,he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door."What can I do for you?"asked the young woman. The boy paused for a while. "Would you please give me some...a drink of water?"the boy dared not look directly into her eyes. She looked at the bony boy and thought he might need something to give him energy so she brought him a glass of milk. His head rising and small hands taking the cup ,he drank it up slowly ,and then asked , "How much do I owe you?""You don't owe me anything ,"she replied with a warm smile on her face. "My mother has taught me never to accept pay for a kindness."Deeply moved ,he said sincerely , "Then I shall thank you from the bottom of my heart."As the boy left that house ,he not only felt stronger physically ,but it also increased his faith in the whole human race.As a matter of fact ,he was about to give up and quit before that point.
Years later the young woman became critically ill. However ,the local doctors were unable to give the effective medical treatment. Finally they sent her to a hospital in the big city ,where specialists could be called in to cure her rare disease.Among those famous specialists ,Dr Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from ,a strange light filled his eyes.Immediately ,he rose and went down through the hospital hall into her room.

As he lay awake that night ,Tony could hear his parents discussing his sister Alice's birthday. It was just two days away.Birthdays were always a lot of fun ,even though there was no money for store- bought gifts.Nearly all of toys he and his sister had were homemade. There was nothing wrong with that ,he knew.Like many families in this part ,they were poor.
This birthday would be different ,though.Alice was older now ,and he'd seen how her eyes lit up when she saw the new doll at Honey House ,a neighbourhood store just down the road from their house.
How he longed for her to have it!An idea finally came to him just before he went to bed. After a quick breakfast the following morning ,he placed a tin can and a piece of string in a large bag. Then he tied the bag to the handlebars of his bike and headed toward a village hill.
After a long journey ,he reached his destination ,the mango forest. There were already two other boys there.Tony grabbed his bag and set to work immediately. The smaller trees had already been picked over pretty well ,but he was able to find a half-dozen mangoes before noon.
When the sun was high overhead ,the hard work began.Nearly all of the taller trees held ripe mangoes but they were well beyond reach. The other boys took their fruit and went away.Tony used his pocket knife to cut a long piece of bamboo. Then he took the tin can from the bag ,tied it to one end of the bamboo stick ,and walked over to the base of the mango tree.
He stayed there ,holding the tin can high up into the tree. His efforts were occasionally rewarded when a mango dropped into the can. After a while his neck ached from looking upward ,and his arms grew sore.He kept at it ,though ,and by late afternoon his bag was nearly full.
On the way back to town ,Tony began to worry that the other boys might already have sold or traded their mangoes with Honey House.
The following morning ,Alice walked into the kitchen and took a seat at the breakfast table.

It was a Saturday afternoon. The colour of the sky was changing ,first light grey ,then dark grey , and finally dark and dense. The wind was blowing heavily ,and the trees were swaying in the strong wind.It began to rain cats and dogs.Soon ,the road was filled with puddles from the rain.
On such a stormy afternoon ,my mother took my five-year-old brother ,Christopher ,and me to a new big toy store she had read about in the newspaper."So many toys ,"the advertisement had shouted in full and flashy colour ,"that we had to get a huge warehouse to fit them all!"
Christopher and I couldn't have been more excited. We ran across the parking lot ,through the cold and biting rain ,as fast as our little legs could carry us.We left our mother outside to battle with the frustrating umbrella ,which never worked when she wanted it to."Christine!Take care of your young brother!"Mother shouted at the top of her voice.
"Christine!I'm going to find the Lego section(乐高积木区)!There's a new pirate ship I want ,and I have four dollars!Maybe I can buy it!"Christopher exclaimed and ran off excitedly.I only half heard him.I took a right turn and ,to my wide-eyed delight ,found myself in the midst of the Barbie(芭比)World.
I was studying a Barbie and doing some simple maths in my head when suddenly an earthshaking clap of thunder roared from the storm outside.I jumped at the noise ,dropping the doll to the floor. The lights flickered(闪烁) once and died ,covering everything in a blanket of blackness.Thunder continued to shake the sky and lightning illuminated the store for seconds ,casting frightening shadows on my mind.
"Oh no ,"I thought ,"where's Christopher?"
"Christine ,I'm here."

Jim liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp from his dad. He ran to the mailbox with his entry(参赛作品) . "Mum will love having a shopping spree ,"he thought.

This time ,the son shouted at his father ,"Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again ,although I have told you so many times'IT IS A CROW’.Are you not able to understand this?"
A little later thefather went to his room and came back with an old tattered(破旧的)diary ,which he had kept since his son was born.On opening a page ,he asked his son to read that page. When the son read it ,the following words were written in the diary:"Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa when a crow suddenly landed on the window edge.My son asked me 23 times what it was ,and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow.I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question.I did not at all feel irritated but instead felt affection(喜爱)for my innocent(天真无邪的)son."

After being busy for half a year ,my parents decided to drive me to a scenic spot outside the city to have fun.Joyfully ,we planned our driving route.
Then ,on a December Saturday morning ,my dad started his car and we set off with great expectation. Before long ,we left the noisy city and came to the mountains. There were few vehicles on the road and the trees alongside were pretty. We felt so excited!
As a few hours passed ,we drove onto a narrow road. And minutes later ,we found a river not far away from the road. The beach was very wide ,and we wanted to have a rest there for a while. So my dad turned our car and drove towards it.Soon ,we were driving on the sandy beach.Moments later ,our car wheels were struggling in the increasingly soft sand. But my dad wanted to get closer to the river.
Before he regretted it ,our car had got stuck in the sand.My dad tried to turn around or move back , but the car didn't move.We were worried ,trapped in the middle of nowhere.Even worse ,it began raining and was cold.We got out of the car and tried to push it ,but failed. After a couple of minutes ,we were tired and our hair and coats were a little wet.But the car only sank further into the sand.
Anxiously ,we walked to the road ,eager to stop a vehicle and let it help pull our car out of the sand. Our coats and hair were wetter and wetter. Before the journey ,we hadn’'t prepared umbrellas or carried any food. Now ,we were hungry and cold ,standing in the rain. After waiting for a long time , there wasn't one vehicle passing.
Just when we were helpless ,we saw a farmhouse not far away."Can they help us?"I asked. My dad was doubtful.Still ,we reached there ,and found it was a big family. They seemed poor and unfriendly. My dad told them our problem and begged them to help us pull our car out.
To our surprise ,they nodded without thinking.
My dad was so grateful that he handed some money to the family to thank them.

One winter Sunday ,my little sister ,Colleen ,and I built the greatest snowman ever.We gave him a carrot nose ,beautiful hat ,cosy scarf and gloves. He was a masterpiece(杰作).
The next morning when looking outside ,we smiled lovingly at him over our meal.We gave him a high-five as we passed by on our way to school.A lot of kids went past our house ,so he was the hot topic at our school that morning. It was our pride!
The day dragged on until finally we could rush home. But as our yard came into sight ,we saw something wrong. The snowman was gone!We only found a broken stick here ,a torn glove there and balls of snow everywhere.Worst of all ,the snowman's once-proud carrot nose lay limp(无力的) and half-eaten.
What had happened? We were both astonished and angry. But then ,we were only kids ,who wouldn't have anything taking away our happiness.Actually we knew only one thing:Our snowman would rise again. And so we rebuilt him.
The next day we came home to find another mess on the front lawn(草坪) .For the rest of the week ,the destruction was repeated daily. Each afternoon we'd return to find our snowman had fallen apart ,and then we built him again.
By Saturday morning ,we had a plan.We borrowed a really big bucket(水桶)from Mum ,filled it with water and left it outside. The next morning ,it was frozen solid. We packed snow all around the ice block as the base(底座)of the snowman. Then we built the other parts of it once again. The trap was set ,and we waited for the snowman bullies(破坏者)to come.
Monday morning ,hiding behind the window ,we soon saw what we were waiting for.
Seeing their pained look ,we couldn't help laughing.

After 21 years of marriage ,my wife wanted me to take another woman out to dinner and a movie.
It's hard to imagine that the other woman was my mother ,who has been a widow for 19 years ,but I am too busy to visit her often. That night I called to invite her to go out for dinner and a movie.
"What's wrong? Are you well?"she asked. My mother is the type of woman who suspects that a late night call or a surprise invitation is a sign of bad news.
"I thought that it would be pleasant to spend some time with you ,"I responded."Just the two of us."
That Friday after work ,as I drove over to pick her up ,I was a bit nervous. When I arrived at her house ,I noticed that she ,too ,seemed to be nervous about our date. She waited in the door with her coat on.She had curled her hair and was wearing the dress that she had worn to celebrate her last wedding anniversary. She smiled from a face that was as beautiful as an angel's.
"I told my friends that I was going to go out with my son ,and they were impressed ,"she said ,as she got into the car."They can't wait to hear about our meeting."
We went to a restaurant that ,although not elegant ,was very nice and cosy.My mother took my arm as if she were the First Lady. After we sat down ,I had to read the menu. Her eyes could only read large print.Halfway through the entries ,I lifted my eyes and saw Mum sitting there staring at me with a smile on her lips.
"It was I who used to have to read the menu when you were small ,"she said."Then it's time you relaxed and let me return the favour ,"I responded.
During the dinner ,we had an agreeable conversation—nothing extraordinary but catching up on recent events of each other's life.We talked so much that we missed the movie.
As we arrived at her house later ,she said ,"Ill go out with you again ,but only if you let me invite you."I agreed.
At that moment I understood the importance of saying ,in time ,"I LOVE YOU."
