Scientists have been looking at DNA to store all types of data, not just biological, but also digital.
Yet while DNA is a great storage material,it's also quite delicate.Water or heat can damage it easily
unless it''s given an amber-like(似琥珀的)coating.That new idea was borrowed from the I993 movie
Jurassic Park,in which scientists cloned dinosaurs from DNA trapped in amber.
DNA is the world's oldest data storage device. The most amazing thing about DNA is that it can
potentially be used to store any type of data.Putting information into DNA uses a process called
encoding(编码).“Your computer s:ores information in a binary format(二进制),zetous aud ones,"
notes Karishma Matange,a computational biologist,"Encoding works to change these zeroes and ones
into A,C.G and T,the DNA bases that can store information."The order of the bases in DNA is called
sequence ()which spells out the information it holds. To pull information back out from the DNA,
you rewind the process.
Scientists can store DNA for long periods. But it requires freezing temperatures, special equipment
and dangerous chemicals, which makes the process costly.James Banal,a scientist in San Carlos,
California, and his team came up with a new method T-REX.His team uses this method to trap DNA in
a material similar to plastic,"Plastics are durable,"Banal points out.Besides,T-REX is a cheap
alternative to enclose DNA.
To test it,the team encoded the Jurassic Park theme music and a person's genome (into
DNA.Then they put the DNA in the glassy plastic.Damp and heat are DNA's biggest threats. But the
T-REX material keeps damp out.The researchers heated it up to 75 Celsius.Later, they got the DNA
by breaking the coating down. The best part,Banal says,is that the broken-down material can be reused
to store DNA again.
Banal and his teammates want to use the T-REX method to preserve genetic data or even safely
store biological samples that will be launched into space. And we might one day use it to store the
massive amounts of data people generate every day.
28.How is digital information stored into DNA?
A.By sequencing DNA from ancient samples.
B.By freezing the DNA at low.temperatures.
C.By coating the DNA with amber material.
D.By turning binary code into DNA bases.
29.What is the main advantage of the T-REX method for DNA storage?
A.Breaking DNA down with chemicals.
B.Offering cost-effective storage of DNA.
C.Helping DNA survive extreme wetuess.
D.Withdrawing whole DNA from dinosaurs.
30.What will the DNA storage technology be used for in the future?
A.Cloning extinct dinosaurs.
B.Reducing global plastic pollution.
C.Preserving diverse samples.
D.Speeding future space exploration.
31.What's the main idea of the text?
A.How Jurassic Park inspired DNA preservation research.
B How digital technology advances DNA analysis.
C.The biological applications of DNA repairing system.
D.A breakthrough in DNA data storage technology.

Imagine you're cooking potatoes for breakfast.First, you'd remove the potatoes from their plastic
bag. Then, you might chop them on a plastic cutting board.Next, you'd probably cook them in a
nonstick pan.All the removing, chopping and overheating of nonstick pans can add 2.3 million
microplastics to your food.
Besides food, the air and water in your home is full of microplastics.Smaller than a grain of salt,
we interact with them more than we might realize.Humans breathe in about 2%million microplastics
annuallv. As a result, microplastics have been detected in our blood and lungs. We're just beginning to
understand the effect of microplastics on human health-but research suggests we should concern
more.
A groundbreaking new study shows how the presence of microplastics in arteries(动脉血管is
linked to a greater risk of heart attack and death. When microplastics build up in arteries, the thicker
blood vessel (walls reduce blood flow to parts of the body. This study will inspire more research
into what other organs plastic may be damaging, such as the brain,or stomach.
Microplastics may be inescapable, but with simple exchanges and fixes, you can reduce the
amount of microplastics you encounter in your own home.Carry your own reusable bags and avoid
buying food that comes in much plastic packaging. When heating food, use stainless steel instead of
nonstick pans.Another way to limit your exposure is to filter (your tap water to reduce plastic
fibers in the tap water.
Ultimately, plastic procucing companies are responsible for the high volume of plastic waste in
our environments, and significantly reducing that plastic-and the microplastics that come with it
will have to be at the policy level nationwide and worldwide..
32:What does the authot try to illustrate by telling the cooking story?
A.Microplastics directly lead to diseases.B.Nonstick pans are free of microplastics.
C.We consume microplastics unknowingly.D.Cooking is to blame for making microplastics.
33.How do microplastios atfect our body according to the new study?
A.By damaging our brain.
B.By slowing blood flow.
C.By thickening our lungs.
D.By causing stomachache
34.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.Tips for people to cut nucroplastics.
B.Proof of microplastics in our homes.
C.Presence of microplastics in packaging.
D.Exposure to microplastics by tap water.
35.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Plastic waste comes from microplastics on earth.
B.The amount of plastic waste is significantly large.
C.Plastic makers and buyers answer for plastic waste.
D.Relevant regulations are vital to contain plastic use.

Xena Biffert,a district science consultant, did lots of backward planning when taking students
outside to meet curricular outcomes. This approach allows curriculum connection and
encourages students'focus and interest to lead the way. Here are four tips for practicing backward
planning with your students.36
Know your curriculum.
Many topics arise organically, and you can cever them through mini-lessons along the way.One
way to deepen that knowledge is to print it out and make a habit of reviewing it daily.37 First,
you develop a familiarity with it.Second, you can see where you can make that connection naturally
where the students'interests meet.
Begin the year with a learning plan and a mind map.
Having guiding questions has helped Xena form and follow a plan for the year.38 For
example,by asking questions like "How are we all interconnectcd?"and "What is our story?",she can
assess outcomes of the plan throughout the school year.
Get students outside regularly.
39 This culture creates an opportunity to form and answer questions about what happens
outdoors and how it connects to other topics. As the emergent leaming arises and there is daily
reflection on it,knowledge and understanding emerge.Through this intentional work and reflection,
teachers will be well equipped to answer questions in the process.
40
It is important'for students to reflect on their observations. We often don't get time to reflect in our
fast-paced classrooms.Often,'reflection is combined with assessment. An easy starting point is
journaling, because it is a thought process accessible to students in every grade.
A.Outside leaming builds a culture.
B.Work out a plan for regular journaling.
C.Make time for student reflection like journaling.
D.Such guiding questions often arise in the backward planning.
E.These may allow you greater flexibility to do outdoor learning.
F.Her reasoning for looking at the curriculum every day is twofold.
G xena creates a mind map using the big idea behind the questions.

I always feel that there is a volcano inside me.Occasionally, the volcano erupts and I say
something I regret. The best way I know to repair the damage is with food, which can open the door of
a hurt heart,even if only a little.
Weeks before,I displeased a friend and hurt my teenage son within six hours.I felt like a hurricane
that tore through other people's life.I pulled together a dozen of chocolate cookie dough ()
baked a half-dozen to ask for forgiveness from my friend and my son,and put the remaining half-dozen
in the freezer,unbaked.
Last week, the frozen cookie dough saved me from myself once again. It all started when my new
neighbor,a college student across'the street,placed a ping-pong table on his front lawn (
I had spent years living in a college town,so I knew that a ping-pong table on a front lawn wasn't
just a ping-pong table.It was a beer-pong table.College students regarded beer pong as a lifestyle,with
the sounds of beer pong extending late into the night or even early in the morning. We had to move to
this quicter part of town, which we did at great expense. And now, here was this guy, placing a new
ping-pong table within full view of my kitchen window.
When I saw that ping-pong table, the memories of drunk and loud college students made my blood
boil.So I walked right up to the student's house, past that stupid table, knocked on the door and told him
that it had to go.I expected him to apologize and remove the table. However,he retumed my anger in
the same manner.
"Who on earth are you?"he shouted."And what gives you the right to make such a silly demand?"
His rudeness only made me angrier.
I felt a drag on my arm.My husband had seen the table and had predicted I'd be on the warpath.

Dear editor,
Learning our school English newspaper is creating a column concerning safety, I’m writing to share my opinions about it.
My first recommendation is information safety. Nowadays teenagers log online for various reasons. Some students may let off personal information unintentionally, making it possible for ill-purposed people to misuse their information to do illegal things.
Another point I want to recommend is traffic safety. Some students ride their e-bikes crazily, some use phones while walking, some take unconfirmed vehicles home. These are all dangerous behaviors.
Hope you will publish articles about these two aspects to make more students aware of their safety.
Yours,
Li Hua

As he pulled me away, I shouted at the young man and told him this wasn’t over. My husband led me back home, but my anger was still boiling. I entered the kitchen and pulled open the freezer for a drink. Suddenly my eyes landed on the frozen cookie dough in the freezer. I took a deep breath, realizing that I had let my anger get the best of me again. I decided to make the cookies, hoping they could work their magic like they had before. The sweet flavour of chocolate filled the air, which cooled down my boiling anger. Soon the cookies were ready.
Then I walked what felt like miles across the street to the young man’s doorstep. With a plate of freshly baked cookies in hand, I knocked on the door. When he opened it, his expression was still guarded. With my reddened face, I apologized, “These cookies are my way of asking for your forgiveness.” He looked at the cookies, then back at me. He said he was sorry, and he even offered to move the table to a less visible spot. At that moment, I realized once again that food had bridged the gap between us two and cured the wounds caused by my angry words.

W: Hi, everyone! I’ll talk about a big event at the zoo. The event celebrates Zoo Lover’s Day. When you get inside, it feels like a big party with lively music. Not far from the entrance, a stage has been set up for the main events.
First, a local band will welcome visitors with popular animal-themed songs. Then the band will be joined by dancers in animal costumes, who will invite the audience to dance. A magician will come on stage after the dancers and perform magic tricks with animals. You’ll find the most amazing moment when he makes the baby elephant disappear.
After the magician’s show, head to the souvenir shop to see other fun activities. In front of the shop, there are spots for children to listen to stories about wild animals. Behind the shop, artists will paint visitors’ faces to look like their favorite animals. When I visited, I got a tiger face-painting, while my parents got monkey designs.
Opposite the shop, there’s an open-air food stand with a huge variety of dishes. If you’re hungry, you can buy some tasty snacks for lunch. Eating lunch at the zoo is exciting because you can hear animal sounds all around. Isn’t that fantastic?
So, why not go and have fun at the event?
