The story of the phoenix comes from both Greece and Egypt. The mythical bird was believed to live forever—each time it died, it lived again. This bird has much to do with the sun. So it’s usually shown as being red, yellow and orange in color.
The griffin is a legendary animal with the head and wings (翅膀) of an eagle (鹰) and the body, legs and tail of a lion. Its story starts in Western Asia. The animal is a symbol of the king. It’s easy to understand since lions are the king of the grassland and eagles are the king of the birds.

As Chinese users get used to their nightly surfing on Xiaohongshu, they are seeing a flood of English-language content. Many users from the US, calling themselves “TikTok refugees (抖音难民)”, have joined this Chinese app.
“Hello everyone, I’m Ryan, a TikTok refugee. The American government is banning (禁止) TikTok, so we’re looking for another choice… We’re sorry to break in here.” one of the vloggers said in a video.
There is a growing belief in the US that American government will keep on banning TikTok because of the so-called China threat (威胁) to information security (安全). This leaves its 170 million users frustrated (懊恼的).

Many Chinese users are worried that US ideas and harmful cultures like gambling (赌博), and drug use could become popular on the Chinese Internet.

Just like a hungry brain craves (渴望) food, a lonely brain craves people. A new brain study proves (证明) this. And it also shows people’s brains become active as soon as people are left alone.
While scientists know loneliness has something to do with depression (抑郁) in some way, it’s hard to tell the real relationship between them. “One way to know their relation is to look at how the brain responds (作出反应) to the time of being alone,” says Livia Tomoya, a scientist.
She and her team workers got 40 volunteers. On the first day, the volunteers didn’t eat anything for 10 hours. On another day, they were placed in a room alone for 10 hours—no friends, no family and no social media. At the end of each day, they showed high activity in a brain area called the midbrain. The researchers were interested in two small areas in it. Both areas became active when hungry volunteers saw pictures of pizza or hamburgers. After the volunteers had been left alone, those brain areas became active when they saw some lost social activities.
The midbrain plays an important part in people’s motivation (动机) for looking for food or friends. In fact, it responds to food and social signals even when people aren’t hungry or lonely. But hunger and loneliness increase the responses.
One of the goals of studying people is to find out what our basic needs are. Nguyen studies the situation of being alone at Durham University. Humans are social animals, Nguyen notes. This new study, she says, shows social time is a basic need.
37.What does the underlined word “it” refer to?
A.The new brain study. B.The lonely brain.
C.The hungry brain. D.Being left alone.
38.How did Livia Tomoya study the relationship between loneliness and depression?
A.By doing research on different feelings people have.
B.By watching how brains respond to the time of being alone.
C.By writing down volunteers’ life without social media.
D.By comparing the volunteers’ ways of dealing with loneliness.
39.What does the third paragraph mainly talk about?
A.Why people need friends and family members around.
B.How the brain study was done and the results of it.
C.Which part of the brain has something to do with feelings.
D.What happened if volunteers were both hungry and lonely.
40.What is Nguyen’s opinion?
A.People wish to be alone. B.Studying people is hard.
C.Humans are social animals. D.Food is part of humans’ basic needs.

Though experts are not sure who first had the idea of the dragon, the traditional stories of dragons have inspired (激发) the imagination of cultures across the world. They’re strong and some are clever and all-knowing. And they’re thought to bring good luck.
The earliest known description of a unicorn comes from Greece. Back then, many people believed the unicorn was real, with a purple head, white fur and blue eyes. It’s said the unicorn was impossible to catch, but many people tried. Why? Because its horn (角) was believed to be magic.

With US users calling themselves TikTok refugees, they are moving to the Chinese app. By Tuesday, there were over 114,000 posts from the foreigners, and more than 2 million discussions and 73 million views by 6 pm on Friday. Xiaohongshu became the most downloaded app on the US app store on Tuesday.
Chinese users have shown welcome and helped them learn Chinese. However, not all cultural exchanges have gone well. A user from Beijing received criticism (批评) from US users for “supporting stereotypes (刻板印象)” after posting a video. Many Chinese users are worried that US ideas and harmful cultures like gambling (赌博), and drug use could become popular on the Chinese Internet.
According to an expert from Fudan University, the influx (流入) of “TikTok refugees” may not last (持续) long. Because American ideas differ greatly from those in China, US culture may have little lasting effect on Xiaohongshu.

C.are looking for another app to replace TikTok

36.What’s the expert’s attitude (态度) towards the influx of “TikTok refugees”?
A.Agreeable. B.Doubtful. C.Uncaring. D.Positive.
