(2025·山东高一联考)A plan to thicken sea ice using water from the ocean below could offer mankind a final chance to save the disappearing sea ice.Field trials(实地试验) done this year in the Arctic have turned out to be successful, says UK startup Real Ice.
Arctic sea ice cover is falling rapidly because of climate change. Many scientists expect the area to be icefree in the summer in the 2030s,even if sharp cuts to emissions(排放) are made. The only way to save the area's summer sea ice is to find a way to thicken the ice, some researchers say.
Real Ice's solution includes making a hole through the ice, then drawing water up and onto the snow that sits atop the ice.The water would go in the snow and freeze(冻结),turning the snow into ice. This means the cold from the Arctic air would spread through it and result in the growth of more ice on the underside of the ice.
Working with the Centre for Climate Repair at the University of Cambridge,Real Ice has been doing field trials this year in Cambridge Bay on Victoria Island in Canada. The company says the trials have validated the idea, thickening the ice shelf by 50 centimeters compared with a control site between January and May.
The experiment also exhibited that the salty water left after the seawater freezes runs through the ice back into the ocean, rather than remaining on top of the ice, which would weaken the result of it.
But differences in attitude(态度) were obvious among scientists. Many are worried about the risk of unexpected results.
“I don't think any of these ideas are practical,” says Julienne Stroeve at University College London. She raises worries about the plan's energy(能源) requirements,as well as the influence that a loss of snow cover would have on animals such as polar bears and seals, which use snow to dig holes for their young. The only solution for saving Arctic ice is to cut emissions, she says.
1.What do some researchers think about the loss of sea ice in the Arctic?
A.It has been worsened more rapidly recently.
B.The Arctic area will soon be free of sea ice.
C.Fruitful steps are being taken to hold it back.
D.Mankind has no choice but to thicken the ice.
2.What does the underlined word “validated” mean in Paragraph 4?
A.Supported. B.Accepted.
C.Misunderstood. D.Refused.
3.What is Julienne Stroeve's attitude to thickening sea ice?
A.Doubtful. B.Supportive.
C.Unconcerned. D.Uncertain.
4.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.The Environment in the Arctic is Worrisome
B.The Plan to Refreeze Sea Ice Shows Promise
C.The Method of Cutting Emissions is Preferable
D.The Sea Ice Cover in the Arctic Disappears Rapidly
根据第二段中的“The only way to save the area's summer sea ice is to find a way to thicken the ice, some researchers say.”
根据画线词下文thickening the ice shelf by 50 centimeters compared with a control site between January and May可知,试验成功了,冰架增厚了50厘米。 故选A。
故选A。
根据第一段中的“A plan to thicken sea ice using water from the ocean below could offer mankind a final chance to save the disappearing sea ice.”
