At the middle school level, there are many academic clubs in which students can participate. Students can choose clubs that focus on an area of interest.
Mathcounts Club
Mathcounts tries to increase excitement towards mathematic achievement. It hopes to provide students with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers. Schools select individuals and teams to participate in competitions. Local competitions are held in February with winners progressing to state competitions and then on to the national level.
Envirothon
The Envirothon program focuses on natural resources knowledge. The ecology field competition for five-member middle school teams offers competitions in wildlife soils, forestry, current environmental issues and aquatics. Students work and learn in middle school clubs and can compete at the local and state level.
Future Problem Solvers
Future Problem Solvers is an academic club that uses a six-step process to solve problems that may happen in the future. Students who are in the talented and gifted program, who like to “think out of the box,” or who enjoy thinking about futuristic problems may like this club. Teams that score high enough can go to the state competition and then to the international competition.
Builders Club
Builders Club is open to any middle school student who wishes to perform community service. The members learn by doing, and they learn organization, teamwork, and leadership. At thirteen, I was diagnosed with a kind of attention disorder. It made school difficult for me. When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not.
In my first literature class Mrs. Smith asked us to read a story and then write about it, all within 45 minutes. I raised my hand right away and said, “Mrs. Smith, you see, the doctor said I have attention problems. I might not be able to do it.
She glanced down at me through her glasses, “You are not different from your classmates, young man.”
I tried, but I didn’t finish the reading when the bell rang. I had to take it home.
In the quietness of my bedroom, the story suddenly all became clear to me. It was about a blind person, Louis Braille. He lived in a time when the blind couldn’t get much education. But Louis didn’t give up. Instead, he invented a reading system of raised dots, which opened up a whole new world of knowledge to the blind.
Wasn’t I the “blind” one in my class, being made to learn like the “sighted” students? My thoughts flowed and my pen started to dance. I completed the task within 40 minutes. Indeed, I was not different from others; I just needed a quieter place. Now that Louis could find his way out of his problems, why should I ever give up? I didn’t expect anything when I handed in my paper to Mrs. Smith, so it was quite a surprise when it came back to me the next day —with an “A” on it. At the bottom of the paper were these words: “See what you can do when you keep tying.”
24. Why did the author fail to finish class reading?
A. He had poor reading skills. B. He was tired of literature.
C. He had an attention disorder. D. He wanted to take the task home.
25. What do we know about Louis Braille from the text?
A. He was poor. B. He was very creative.
C. He was near-sighted. D. He was well-educated.
26. What was Mrs. Smith’s attitude to the author at the end of the story?
A. Angry. B. Impatient. C. Supportive. D. Negative.
27. What does the text mainly want to tell us?
A. The blind should be treated with respect.
B. Teachers can open up a new world to students.
C. Everyone needs a hand when faced with challenges.
D. One can find his way out of difficulties with efforts.
C
High school students perform better on tests if they are in a classroom with a view(视野)of a green space, instead of a windowless room or a room with a view of built-up space, according to research from the University of Illinois Department of Landscape Architecture.
“It is the first to show a relationship between studying with a green view and students performance, said William Sullivan head of the research team. It’s a significant finding that if you have a green view outside your window, you’ ll do better on tests.”Sullivan hopes the results of their research will lead to policy(政策)changes. Changes in school design, for example“would be a much better thing than any of the things we spend money on in secondary education today ,Sullivan said.
The research included 94 students at five central Illinois high schools Students were randomly assigned(随机分配)to one of three kinds of classrooms-windowless, with a window looking out onto built-up space, or with a window looking out onto green space. Each kind of classroom had a similar size and layout. The students took part in one-on-one experiments in which they did 30 minutes of activities that included a proofreading exercise, a speech and a math exercise. Following the activities the students were given an attention test which asked them to repeat a series of(一连串)numbers.
The findings: Students did better on both study activities and the attention test if they were in a classroom with a green view ,Sullivan said.
The researchers suggest their findings can help planners and policymakers improve students' well-being and learning. For example planners can choose sites for new schools that already have trees and other vegetation, or they can plant many trees on the site;architects( 建筑师) can design classroom, dining room and hallway windows so they look onto green spaces.
28. What did the study find out about high school students?
A. They like to have green plants in their classrooms.
B. They will get better grades when studying in different classrooms.
C. Changes in school design will influence their attitudes towards teachers.
D. A green view through a classroom window can improve their performance.
29. What does the underlined word“ significant”in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Traditional. B. Important. C. Necessary. D. Early.
30. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. How the study was carried out. B. Why the study was different.
C. The purpose of the study . D. The result of the study.
31. What do the researchers think of the study?
A. It has drawn public attention to education.
B. It can play a guiding role in school planning.
C. It has encouraged students to get close to nature.
D. It needs more support from high school teachers.

In a world-record effort to help save a valuable sea creature, Australian scientists have released hundreds of baby seahorses into the wild. The tiny seahorses are endangered, and the scientists hope the new seahorses will help their numbers grow.
Seahorses get their name because they look a bit like horses. They aren’t great swimmers, even though they’re fish. They often use their tails to hold onto something in the water. They mostly live in warm, shallow waters around the world. They are often found in coral reefs, in beds of seagrass, and areas where rivers empty into the sea. Seahorses form an important part of the ocean’s food chain. They eat tiny sea creatures and are eaten by bigger sea animals.
Many kinds of seahorses are often threatened by the human actions. Sometimes they’re caught and sold as pets. They are also caught by accident when people are trying to catch other fish.
To begin the project, scientists collected three pregnant seahorses in January. Those seahorses were brought back to the aquarium (水族馆) in Sydney. After the babies were born, the scientists kept them there for five months, feeding the baby seahorses shrimps (小虾) to help them grow strong. Scientist Mitchell Brennan says, “They don’t have a stomach, so they have to eat constantly.”
About a month before the young seahorses were released, the scientists created eight underwater “hotels” for them. The hotels look like cages, providing a safe place for the seahorses to develop. Putting the hotels into the sea early allowed the cages to be covered with small sea life that can help provide food for the seahorses.
This is the fifth time the scientists have released seahorses into the area, and this time was a record. Around 380 seahorses were released. The researchers put tiny tags (标记) under the skin of many of the seahorses to help track them in the future.
32. What can be learned about seahorses from paragraph 2?
A. They look exactly like horses. B. They have a gift for swimming.
C. They mostly live in the deep sea. D. They feed on small sea creatures.
33. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The types of the seahorses. B. Living conditions the seahorses need.
C. Areas the seahorses live in. D. Dangers the seahorses face.
34. Why are the eight “hotels” put into the sea early?
A. To differ the project from the former ones.
B. To avoid danger the seahorses may face.
C. To offer food to the seahorses.
D. To help track the seahorses in the future.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. A New Study on Endangered Seahorses
B. Underwater “Hotels” for Baby Seahorses
C. A Record Number of Baby Seahorses Were Released
D. New Methods of Finding Endangered Seahorses

At thirteen, I was diagnosed with a kind of attention disorder. It made school difficult for me. When everyone else in the class was focusing on tasks, I could not.
In my first literature class, Mrs.
【答案】24. C 25. B 26. C 27. D

【答案】32. D 33. D 34. C 35. C
