Passage 1
A Day in the Life of a Junior School Student
Dulwich Pudong
Oct 28, 2024
What is it really like to be a junior high school student? We asked three students — Fatima Y, Jimmy G, and Charly C — to tell us about a day in their life at Dulwich Pudong.
Junior high here includes Years 3 to 6 --Year 3 is like Year 2 in local schools and is for kids aged 7 to 11. They use the English National Curriculum, but it's changed a little to fit the international environment.
Junior high students learn through "topic-based learning". This means different subjects are grouped under one main topic or something they're interested in. They also have special classes for English and Math. There are special teachers for Mandarin, PE, Art, Design Technology, and Music. When possible, these classes are also connected to the current main topic.
Our junior high wants to give each child the best education and support in a friendly and safe place. To do this, we encourage students to really understand what they learn. We also help them keep their natural curiosity and grow their creativity.

1. Junior high here includes Years 3 to 6 -- Year 3 is like Year 2 in local schools and is for kids aged 7 to 11.
前半部分 “Junior high here includes Years 3 to 6” 是主干,说明初中包含的年级;破折号后的内容是对 “Year 3” 的补充说明,其中 “aged 7 to 11” 是过去分词短语作定语,修饰 “kids”。
2. This means different subjects are grouped under one main topic or something they're interested in.
. 分析:主句是 “This means...”,其后是省略了引导词 that 的宾语从句 “different subjects are grouped under...”。
3. To do this, we encourage students to really understand what they learn.
主句中 “encourage sb. to do sth.” “what they learn” 是宾语从句,作 “understand” 的宾语,what 在从句中作宾语。

Passage 2
Life as a junior in high school
Junior year in high school is often thought to be the hardest year for studying. This is because the courses are harder and there is pressure from big tests (like the SAT or ACT). Here is a simple look at what you might face and how to get ready for it:
Harder classes – In junior year, students usually take more difficult classes, such as AP or IB classes. Get ready for more work and more challenging things to learn. Try to have a good mix of hard classes and classes you can handle. This way, you won't feel too stressed.
Big tests – Many students take the SAT or ACT in junior year. Start getting ready early. Learn about how the tests are set up, take practice tests, and if you can, go to test prep classes or get help from a teacher.
Learning about colleges – You don't need to pick which colleges to apply to yet. But it's a good plan to start finding out about colleges and what they need for you to get in. If possible, you can also start visiting college campuses.
Keeping good grades – Because the classes are harder, you need to make time for studying and keep up with your schoolwork. Your grades in junior year are very important for getting into college, so try to keep them good.
1. Junior year in high school is often thought to be the hardest year for studying.
分析:这是一个被动语态的句子,“is often thought to be” 表示 “通常被认为是”。主语是 “Junior year in high school”,表语是 “the hardest year for studying”。
2. Here is a simple look at what you might face and how to get ready for it:
句子结构:这是一个主从复合句,主干为 “Here is a simple look”,后面接介词短语 “at what you might face and how to get ready for it” 作定语,修饰 “look”。其中,“what you might face” 和 “how to get ready for it” 是两个并列的宾语从句,分别对应 “可能遇到的情况” 和 “如何准备”。
3. Try to have a good mix of hard classes and classes you can handle.
分析:这是一个祈使句,“Try to do sth.” “you can handle” 是定语从句,修饰先行词 “classes”,省略了引导词 that。

Practising curling (冰壶) on real ice is part of the everyday exercise for students at Dianchang Road Primary School in Beijing's Shijingshan District.
The primary school started its own curling team early before the Beijing Winter Olympics. It built an ice rink for more than 300 students at the school so that students in different classes can all have the chance to take part in the sport on real ice.
The school made its “2+8+5” winter sports training plan for all the students. The “2” section of the plan can make sure all 390 students at the school are offered at least two opportunities every year to train “on ice” or “on snow”, while the “8+5” section refers to the 13 sports such as ice hockey and cross-country skiing, and students can choose from 5 sports played on real ice and 8 ice sports adapted (适应) to the “dry” ground.
“We wanted to create an environment for them to'get a feel for these winter sports,” said Xue, the principal of the school.
From7:10 a. m. to 7:50 a. m. and from 4 p. m. to 4:30 p. m., the play ground is divided into different areas for students to practise skiing, running and ice hockey. The students are fully equipped just as they would really take part in the sports.
“My favourite sport is cross-country skiing. I love the excitement that skiing brings to me. I'm not afraid of falling down because my coach said she isn't either,”said Lu Jianing, a 10-year-old girl.
The school located in Beijing's first Winter Olympic Games community—Gaojinglu—also wants students to learn about the culture of the Olympic Games, including its spirit and symbolism.
It has a 60-square-metre Winter Olympic-themed museum in the school, which includes handicrafts, creative paintings and sculptures and photographs made by students to describe what the Winter Olympic Games means to them.
