第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
The prodigious ability of our species to rapidly assimilate vocabulary, expanding from a mere 300 lexemes by the tender age of two to an impressive repertoire exceeding 1,000 by the age of four, remains a subject of profound enigma. Certain scholars in the realms of cognitive science and linguistics have posited that the human mind enters the world equipped with innate cognitive predispositions and logical parameters that facilitate this linguistic feat. However, recent advancements in the sphere of machine learning have unveiled the potential for swift acquisition of semantic understanding from sparse data, eschewing the need for preconceived, hardwired assumptions.
An ensemble of researchers has triumphantly honed a rudimentary artificial intelligence construct to correlate visual representations with their corresponding lexical entities, utilizing a mere 61 hours of ambient visual recordings and auditory data — previously amassed from an individual known as Sam during the years 2013 and 2014. Though this represents but a minuscule fraction of a child’s developmental chronicle, it transpires that this was sufficiently informative to prompt the AI in discerning the significance of select vocables.
These revelations intimate that the process of linguistic acquisition may be more straightforward than hitherto presumed. It is conceivable that the juvenile mind does not necessitate a tailor-made, sophisticated linguistic apparatus to adeptly apprehend the essence of words, posits Jessica Sullivan, an adjunct professor of psychology at Skidmore College. “This is an exceptionally elegant inquiry,” she articulates, as it presents corroborative evidence that rudimentary data extracted from a child’s perspective is sufficiently abundant to initiate the processes of pattern recognition and lexical assimilation.
The recent scholarly endeavor also illustrates the plausibility of machines emulating the learning modalities inherent to human cognition. Vast linguistic models are typically nurtured on colossal datasets encompassing billions, if not trillions, of lexical permutations. In stark contrast, human beings manage with a significantly reduced informational intake, as articulated by the principal scribe of the study, Wai Keen Vong. With the appropriate genre of data, the chasm separating machine and human learning could be substantially bridged.
Nevertheless, further investigation is warranted in select dimensions of this pioneering research. The savants concede that their findings do not conclusively elucidate the mechanisms by which children amass vocabulary. Additionally, the study’s purview was confined to the identification of nouns pertaining to tangible entities.
Despite these limitations, this represents a stride toward a more profound comprehension of our own cognitive faculties, which may ultimately contribute to the enhancement of human pedagogical practices, according to Eva Portelance, a scholar in computational linguistics. She remarks that AI research has the potential to shed light on enigmatic queries about our essence that have persisted over time. “We can harness these paradigms in a salutary manner, to the advantage of scientific discovery and societal progress,” Portelance further elaborates.
21.What is a significant finding of machine-learning research?
A.Vocabulary increases gradually with age.
B.Vocabulary can be acquired from minimal data.
C.Language acquisition is tied to built-in expectations.
D.Language acquisition is as complex as formerly assumed.
22.What does the underlined word “prompt” in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Facilitate. B.Persuade. C.Advise. D.Expect.
23.What is discussed about the new research in paragraph 5?
A.Its limitations. B.Its strengths.
C.Its uniqueness. D.Its process.

Hannah Ray J was introduced to river surfing after noticing a surfer in the middle of a river in Iowa by chance. This arouse a passion that has since defined her life. River surfing, once a excited activity, is now gaining public attention in the Midwest as an exciting outdoor sport.
New Whitewater parks and surfing areas are being developed across the region, such as in Nebraska and Iowa, with plans to attract thousands of visitors, boosting local economies. Badfish SUP, a Colorado-based company, reports a significant rise in river surfboard sales since the pandemic(疫情) began. They’ve even named a board “Wave Farmer” in honor of those living near these new recreation spots.
The constant waves in rivers, unlike the ocean, allow surfers to practice constantly. Technological advancements have helped transform river surfing from a rare to a mainstream activity. The growing interest is evident in the number of cars at the WOKA Whitewater park in Oklahoma, exceeding expectations.
WOKA offers rent gear(齿轮) and live webcams(摄像头) to check wave conditions. The community support for such activities is also noticeable, with businesses related to Whitewater activities expanding into the area. Other cities are looking to reproduce these successes with plans for Whitewater parks on their rivers.
However, challenges remain, including water quality issues, variable river flows, and safety risks associated with fast-moving water. Despite these barriers, river surfing looks set to continue its rise in popularity, offering both thrills and economic opportunities for many communities.

A. 次要的 B. 主流的 C. 大众的 D. 细微的
27. What do we know about nowadays river surfing activities?
A. The support from the community had been noticed.
B. It will continuously rise its popularity if the barriers can be solved.
C. Other cities had reproduced the same success of Whitewater park.
D. Its popularity also constantly rise although there are some barriers.

In the Roman times and throughout the Middle Ages, salt was a valuable commodity (商品), and also served as “white gold”. Soldiers in the Roman army were sometimes paid with salt instead of money. Their monthly allowance was called “salarium” (“sal” being the Latin word for salt). This Latin root can be recognized in the French word “salaire” and it eventually made it into English as the word “salary”.
Language is something we take for granted. However, as the example with the word “salary” shows, languages are not static. Like biological species, languages change over time, and sometimes develop to give rise to several descendant (后代) languages. For example, French, Italian, and Spanish are among the languages that have evolved from Latin. And like species, languages can go extinct, too.
Given all these similarities, linguists (语言学家) who study the evolution of languages often use tools that are similar to those used by evolutionary biologists. One such tool is the reconstruction of a species tree. Such a tree shows the evolutionary history and relationships within a given group of biological species.
Using a reconstructed species tree, evolutionary biologists can often infer specific characteristics of ancestral species. Or they can match up common ancestors in the tree with actual fossils that have been found by paleontologists (古生物学家). This allows them to put real dates at various branching points in the tree. Thus, species tree reconstruction is an essential tool in studying biological evolution.
A similar technique can be used to study language evolution because languages also evolve and consist of words that can be easily compared. Indeed, linguists have reconstructed entire language trees. And as with species trees, characteristics of ancient ancestral languages can be derived (衍生) from them.
Of course, there also are some differences between species evolution and language evolution, each requiring unique additional methods to study them in detail. But, overall, it is fascinating to see how the basic ideas and research tools of language evolution are similar to those of biological evolution.
28.Why does the author mention the word “salary” in paragraph 1?
A.To illustrate the evolution of language.
B.To present the effect of Latin on languages.
C.To stress the value of salt in ancient times.
D.To show developments in linguistic theory.
29.What can we infer from paragraph 2?
A.Cultural diversity and biodiversity are linked.
B.Species and languages have a lot in common.
C.Human-caused mass extinction is accelerating.
D.Languages influence and learn from each other.
30.What can we know about the reconstructed species tree?
A.It is currently in the design stage. B.It facilitates the research of linguists.
C.It can be used in a variety of ways. D.It is the first choice for biologists.
31.What can be the best title for the text?
A.The Language System Evolved Over Time
B.The Twin Extinctions of Species and Languages
C.Salt Played a Crucial Role in Early Human History
D.From Salt to Salary: Linguists Take a Page from Biology

River surfing was inspired by ocean surfing, but its popularity is growing all on its own. Traditional surfing began more than 3,000 years ago in Western Polynesia. First making its way to Hawaii, the sport has since spread across the globe, leaving in its wake wave — chasers from all corners of the planet — even land-locked places. Some surfers hungry for waves but without coastlines have turned to river surfing, which delivers a similar experience in ocean-less conditions.
In 1970’s Munich, a small group of adventurous surfers took to the Eisbach River near Englischer Garten Park. Holding tight to two ropes attached to a bridge, they balanced on wooden planks(厚木板) in the river to imitate the ocean surfing they had experienced abroad. This is the moment many river surfers believe the sport was born.
River waves are formed either by water flowing quickly downstream over a drop in sea level, creating standing waves, or by tidal bores(涌潮), which occur where rivers meet the sea. The speed of the water controls the energy of a wave, while the length of the drop decides its size. Because the thickness of a wave also matters (surf fails if there’s just a few inches of water), the size of the river channel is also important. Rideable waves can occur with slow flow and small drop conditions if the river channel is narrow enough to create a thick wave, and the opposite is true for wide channels.
Because flow can change from day to day and season to season, thanks to a previous winter’s snowfall or other natural phenomena, even an expert has to be at the right spot on the right day to discover a surfable river wave. There are a handful river waves across the U. S. that are particularly worth checking out. Don’t forget your personal equipment and, for rocky or debris-filled(充满杂物的) rivers, a helmet.
32. Which description of river surfing is true from the passage?
A. It first occurred in Hawaii.
B. It has lasted for more than 3,000 years.
C. It actually is a replacement for ocean surfing.
D. It has become more popular than traditional surfing.
33. Where is river surfing considered to be created?
A. In the Eisbach River. B. In Western Polynesia.
C. In Littleton, Colorado. D. In Englischer Garten Park.
34. Which is correct about the river channel?
A. It affects tidal bores.
B. Its size decides the thickness of waves.
C. Narrow river channels create slow river flow.
D. Wide river channels contribute to rapid and thick waves.
35. What’s the purpose of the last sentence?
A. To note that river surfing is actually fascinating.
B. To showcase the difficulty finding a perfect wave.
C. To express the necessity of professional equipment.
D. To stress the importance of safety when river surfing.

“Maya, do you know what day it is today?” Ali asked. Maya, absorbed in her homework, replied, “It’s the 5th of December.” Then suddenly she exclaimed, “Ali, it’s Daddy’s birthday today!” “That’s exactly what I was about to tell you,” Ali responded with excitement. “How could we forget such a special day? How careless of us!” Maya blamed herself. “Maya, we haven’t planned anything yet. We don’t have much time!” Ali regretted. “It’s never too late, we still have time until dinner,” Maya comforted him.
Both of them were filled with determination to make their dad’s birthday memorable. They decided to gather some funds and remembered they had been saving their pocket money to buy comic books. However, even after pooling their money, they realized it wasn’t enough.
“Oh no, we can’t even afford a decent chocolate cake with this amount, let alone decorations,” Maya sighed in disappointment.
“But remember sister, Daddy likes simplicity, so we should make it as simple as we can. Let’s decorate the room with balloons only and simply order creamy pasta, Daddy’s favourite,” Ali expressed his thoughts.
“Hmm ... you are right. I am thinking of baking the cake ourselves,” added Maya. “Now let’s see what’s in the fridge and start working on our project for today.”
That evening, their parents had to attend a tea party, leaving the kids with ample time to experiment in the kitchen. Maya felt a bit nervous, but Ali encouraged her. “Dear sister, have confidence in yourself. This is our last option, and we don’t have any other choice. Trust me, baking a cake isn’t as difficult as it seems only if we are determined to.”

第一节
Dear club manager,
I’m writing to contribute a suggestion for the upcoming “Read Together” initiative. I recommend “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. This classic novel is set in the 1930s and explores racial inequality and social injustice through the eyes of a young girl, Scout Finch. The book’s timeless themes and vivid characters make it an excellent choice for our club. It not only provides insight into America’s history but also encourages discussions about empathy and understanding.
Thank you for considering my suggestion.
Yours,

第二节 (满分25分)
With Ali’s motivation, they started the task like scientists in a lab. They surfed the Internet and found the recipes for cake. Having prepared the necessary ingredients: eggs, sugar, milk, oil, baking powder, light cream and so on, they started according to the procedures. Eventually they made it. After placing the cake in the oven, they cleaned up the kitchen. Nearly 30 minutes later, the cake emerged from the oven, and they both shouted with joy, “We did it!” Overcome with excitement, they got down to decorating the room with the balloons.
As they just finished decorating the room, the doorbell rang. Maya and Ali opened the door. Upon seeing their parents, the kids hummed the birthday song together. Knowing the birthday cake was made by themselves, his father gave them each a bear hug, saying “Thank you my sweeties. What a big surprise.” It became a memorable day. Later that night, Maya shared a lesson with Ali, “Sometimes, it’s only the first step that makes us afraid. Once we have a firm belief in ourselves, everything will become a piece of cake.”

W: How did you enjoy your weekend at the seaside?
M: It started very well on Saturday, but on the second day we got a very unpleasant surprise.
W: What happened?
M: That afternoon, while everyone was enjoying the sunshine on the beach or playing in the sea, the sky suddenly went dark. A strong wind started blowing. Before people could gather their stuff and run for cover, there was a heavy shower of hail. All the people got into a panic, and left their things behind and ran to the beach restaurant. The hailstones were so big that many people got hurt!

W: You're right; it does. But it is actually a novel.
M: Wow! The writing is really small. This would take me a year to finish.
W: I've been reading for awhile, and I read pretty fast. So, you prefer shorter stories, then?
M: I prefer books on tape. With my schedule, I don't really have the time to sit down and read.
W: I understand. That's why I do most of my reading just before bed. What do you listen to?
M: Books that inspire me and teach me new things. Most of the time, I listen to them when I'm driving. Sometimes I listen to them when I'm on along flight.
W: That sounds like a good idea. I could listen to one in the background while I'm cooking.

W: Currently, there are over 1,000 seed banks located all over the world. How does the seed bank work? First, scientists from all over the world collect endangered and useful wild species, put them in a paper or cotton bag to prevent them from getting bad, and send them to the seed bank. Once the seeds arrive, they're dried and preserved in a special room. After that, X-rays confirm that the seeds are undamaged and that no insects are hidden inside. The seeds are then frozen, stored in special containers and then placed in huge freezers at −20℃ for long-term storage, which allows the seeds to be preserved for decades and reawakened when required. One of the most famous seed banks, Svalbard International Seed Bank, now holds more than one million seed samples. It is located deep in a frozen Arctic mountain in Norway. As Earth is facing huge challenges like climate change, these seed banks are surely significant to safeguard the future of the world's food supply.

【答案】32. C 33. A 34. B 35. D
【语篇解读】这是一篇说明文。本文介绍了正在流行起来的河流冲浪。
32. 推理判断题。根据第一段中的“some surfers hungry for waves but without coastlines have turned to river surfing, which delivers a similar experience in ocean-less conditions(一些渴望海浪但没有海岸线的冲浪者转向了河上冲浪,这在没有海洋的条件下也能提供类似的体验)”可知,一些冲浪者渴望海浪但是却没身处海岸,于是他们转向河流冲浪。河流冲浪能在没有海的条件下带来海上冲浪相似的体验。由此可推知,河流冲浪实际上是海洋冲浪的替代品。故选C项。
33. 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“In 1970’s Munich, a small group of adventurous surfers took to the Eisbach River near Englischer Garten Park... This is the moment many river surfers believe the sport was born.(20世纪70年代的慕尼黑,一小群富有冒险精神的冲浪者来到了恩格利舍加滕公园附近的艾斯巴赫河……这是许多河上冲浪者相信这项运动诞生的时刻。)”可知,河流冲浪被认为诞生在Eisbach River。故选A项。
34. 推理判断题。根据第三段中的“ Rideable waves can occur with slow flow and small drop conditions if the river channel is narrow enough to create a thick wave, and the opposite is true for wide channels.(如果河道狭窄到足以形成厚波,则在水流缓慢和落差较小的情况下可能会出现可驾驭的波浪,而宽河道则相反。)”可知,如果河道足够窄到可以制造厚的波浪,河道宽则反之。因此,河道可以决定波浪的厚度,从而影响河流冲浪。故选B项。
35. 推理判断题。根据文章最后一句话中的“Don’t forget your personal equipment and, for rocky or debris-filled(充满杂物的) rivers, a helmet.(不要忘记你的个人装备,对于布满岩石或碎片的河流,也不要忘记头盔。)”

【答案】
