Have you ever conducted a job interview through video? Do you work remotely and mostly communicate with your colleagues through technologies like Microsoft Teams or Slack? Technologies are rapidly changing how, when, and where we work. But what impact do they have on our work motivation? We recently reviewed the research done to answer this question and unfortunately, the news is not so good.
For the most part, technologies have worsened the satisfaction of our psychological needs when we work. They are robbing us of our feelings of control and freedom because they monitor us and tell us what and how to do our work; sometimes they also pressure us to work faster. And they are decreasing our chances to create meaningful relationships with colleagues.
To fix and avoid these issues in the future, we have concluded from this review that we need to advocate for the use of psychological knowledge when designing technologies to be used in work environments. Psychologists are well equipped to advise how to design and use technologies in ways that will maintain or even improve the design of our work.
Work is considered to be well-designed when it gives us some decision-making power, provides us with performance feedback, and allows us to connect with colleagues not only to increase relatedness but also to see the impact our work has on stakeholders(利益相关者). Good work design makes our work more meaningful.
Why is this important? Because work motivation that stems from meaning and enjoyment will be increasingly important in the future of work. Indeed, as work environments and career tracks become more dynamic and precarious, we need workers to be more active and flexible for the changeable situation. And motivation through meaning and enjoyment makes people more active and flexible.
So, when you hear your employer wants to introduce new technologies in your workplace, ask them if they have used the service of psychology experts. It will ensure your work keeps being designed in a way that will make it meaningful and enjoyable.
24. According to the recent research review, how do technologies affect our work?
A. They decrease our working efficiency.
B. They increase our psychological needs.
C. They improve our relationships with colleagues.
D. They reduce our work motivation for creativity.
25. What does the author suggest for introducing technologies in work?
A. Updating technical equipment. B. Consulting psychology experts.
C. Reviewing the former research. D. Improving the design of our work.
26. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The process of good work design. B. The potential decision-making power.
C. The characteristic of well-designed work. D. The meaning of connection with colleagues.
27. What does the underlined word “precarious” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Uncertain. B. Unavoidable. C. Rewarding. D. Straightforward.
C
One might expect that the ever-growing demands of the tourist trade would bring nothing but good for the countries that receive the holiday-makers. Indeed, a rosy picture is painted for the long-term future of the holiday industry. Every month sees the building of a new hotel somewhere. And every month another rock-bound Pacific island is advertised as ‘the last paradise on earth’.
However, the scale and speed of this growth seem set to destroy the very things tourists want to enjoy. Overcrowded beaches and the concrete jungles of endless hotels have begun to lose their appeal. Those countries with little experience of tourism can suffer most in a rush to make quick money. In recent years, Nepal’s forests, full of wildlife and rare flowers, were offered to tourists as one more untouched paradise, with the consequent destruction of precious trees and plants.
The people as well rapidly feel its effects. Farmland makes way for hotels, roads and airports; the old way of life goes. The one-time farmer is now the servant of some multinational organization; he is no longer his own master. Once it was his back that bore the pain; now it is his smile that is exploited. No doubt he wonders whether he wasn’t happier in his village working his own land.
Thankfully, the tourist industry is waking up to the responsibilities it has towards those countries that receive its customers. The protection of wildlife and the creation of national parks go hand in hand with tourist development and in fact obtain financial support from tourist companies. At the same time, tourists are being encouraged to respect not only the countryside they visit but also its people.
The way tourism is handled in the next ten years will decide its fate and that of the countries we all want to visit. Increased understanding in planning worldwide tourism can preserve the market for these companies. If not, in a few years’ time the very things that attract tourists now may well have been destroyed.
28. What does the underlined sentence of Para. 1 imply about tourism expansion?
A. Its technical challenge. B. Its positive social effects.
C. Its potential drawbacks. D. Its undervalued profitability.
29. Why does the author mention “Nepal” in Para. 2?
A. To support an argument. B. To make comparison.
C. To show cause and effect. D. To group related ideas.
30. What is the main impact of tourism on farmers based on the text?
A. Increased opportunities. B. Improved work-life balance.
C. Transformed livelihood. D. Enhanced social status.
31. What may determine the future of tourism?
A. Cultural diversity. B. Off-track destinations.
C. Stable market. D. Strengthened management.
D
Language gradually shifts over time. Much research examines how social and environmental factors influence language change, but very little deals with the forces of human cognitive(认知的)selection that fix certain words into the dictionary. For an extensive new study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, scientists investigated just that.
In an experiment much like a game of telephone, thousands of participants read English-language stories and rewrote them to be read by other participants, who then rewrote them for others. Only certain words from the first stories survived in the final versions. Researchers analyzed the word types speakers consistently favored, theorizing that such preferences drive language change over time. The scientists also separately analyzed two large collections of English historical texts from the past two centuries, containing more than 40 billion words — again seeing only certain types survive.
The results show three features that give words an “evolutionary(进化的)advantage” by helping them stick in the brain: First, words typically acquired at an early age (such as "hand" "uncle" or "today") are stabler. Next, concrete words remain better than abs tract ones: "dog" persists longer than "animal", which persists longer than "organism". Lastly, emotionally exciting words — whether negative or positive — tend to continue to exist.
Early language-evolution models assumed that language becomes increasingly complex over time. But Indiana University Bloomington cognitive scientist Fritz Breithaupt says the new study supports a more recent theory that language finally gets more efficient and easier to understand.
Still, as the study notes, "the English language is not baby talk." Breithaupt explains: "We shift toward simple language, but then we also grab complex language that we need." New words that address the complexity of modern life may somewhat balance out this shift.
32.What is the purpose of the new study?
A.To find out why language gradually shifts over time.
B.To present society is a key factor in language change.
C.To identify how cognitive selection affects language change.
D.To figure out what words are easily included in the dictionary.
33.What were the participants asked to do during the experiment?
A.Play games on the phone. B.Read stories to other participants.
C.Rewrite what they read for others. D.Analyze the words they prefer to use.
34.Which words have the most evolutionary advantage according to the new study?
A.Head, imagination and happy. B.Mouth, horse and disappointed.
C.Insect, fortune and competition. D.Soccer, organism and adventure.
35.What is Fritz Breithaupt's attitude towards the new study?
A.Tolerant. B.Uncaring. C.Doubtful. D.Approving.
Sometimes our friends’ behavior can offend(冒犯) us; sometimes we can see changes they need to make — but how do we tell them? 36
It’s important to have solid evidence that there is indeed a problem. Evidence that can be agreed upon makes it easier for other people to recognize issues. 37 Psychologist Andrea Bonior suggests framing problems with “I”. Saying “I feel hurt that you spend less time with me” is less accusatory(谴责的) than “You never spend time with me!” and is focused more clearly on the impact.
38 Becoming tense might lead you to react badly and cause an argument. Bonior recommends that you should acknowledge the conversation could make you anxious. If you think about this yourself, it can help you focus on positive results. If you admit your anxiety to your friend, you will show a more human side. Another psychologist, Laura Brennan, points out how it’s important that we let go of our ego(自我) and don’t focus on the need to be proved right. This can help reduce tension.
39 Many experts recommend planning your words so that you can say things in a way that avoids conflict. However, Bonior cautions against overplanning, as this can stop you from being flexible enough to genuinely follow and participate in the discussion.
Be realistic. Complicated problems are unlikely to be solved with one conversation. Consider what is possible in one discussion and that it may be harder than you initially thought. 40
A. Staying calm is vital.
B. Are there any ways to make difficult conversations easier?
C. Some people like to gather evidence to support their concerns.
D. This will help you to set realistic goals for what you can achieve.
E. Once you have proof, it’s important to highlight how it impacts us and others.
F. Should we always be completely honest with our friends about their behavior?
G. We can lower the potential for conflict by listening to the other person and asking questions.

“Did you write your thank-you notes?” I asked my son, Jon.
“No, not yet, Mom,” Jon replied, rolling his eyes.
He promised to do it when he got back from Kim's house. However, I demanded that he not leave the house until he finished writing a note to everyone he came in contact with during the job interview.
“Even the receptionist who was rude to me?” Jon asked with a confused expression.
“Especially her!”
Jon was home on Christmas break from college and had just finished interviewing with his first-choice company in Cleveland, Ohio. It was a rare opportunity considering that jobs were in short supply.
The power of a thank-you note is something I drilled into my boy from the time he was old enough to hold a pencil. It didn't matter if it was for a birthday, Christmas or graduation. Every gift had to be acknowledged with sincere gratitude within twenty-four hours.
Growing up, my mom was a stickler for thank-you notes. But she phrased it in such a way that it came across not as a threat but as a privilege. She'd say, “Your words of sincere gratitude have the power to change someone's life for the better—even if it's just for a moment.” Her advice changed my life, and it was my hope that it would change Jon's life as well.
After an hour, Jon emerged from his room and handed over eight thank-you notes. To my delight, they were all sincere and heartfelt, even the one to the receptionist who had been less than friendly. Before Jon left to visit Kim, he turned to me and announced that he was pretty sure a thank-you note to the CEO or the receptionist wasn't going to land him the job. With a smile, I told him to wait and see.
Jon was twenty-one years old, and I felt foolish telling a grown man what to do, but I also didn't want him living in our basement for the rest of his life!
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
A week later, Jon received a call from the company.

A week later, Jon received a call from the company. Shifting uneasily in his chair, he picked up the phone. “Yes, this is Jon,” he said, trying to keep his voice steady. I watched him, my heart pounding. As he continued to speak, his face lit up with an excited smile. When he hung up the phone, he turned to me, eyes shining. He told me that they were really impressed with his interview, but what really stood out were the thank-you notes. The CEO mentioned that he was touched by the notes and appreciated the effort Jon put into thanking everyone, including the receptionist. I felt a rush of pride and relief. I knew it would work.
The next day after work, I found a thank-you note on my bedside table. Surprised, I picked it up, unfolded it, and was greeted with Jon’s familiar handwriting. It was a thank-you note from Jon. He thanked me for pushing him to do his best and for teaching him the importance of gratitude, which had truly changed his life. As I read the note, tears welled up in my eyes. I had always believed in the power of gratitude and a thank-you note, but seeing it come full circle like this was more rewarding than I could have ever imagined. Jon was not only succeeding in his career but also growing into a thoughtful and compassionate man. And that was the greatest gift of all.

D 25. B 26. C 27. A
根据第二段“For the most part, technologies have worsened the satisfaction of our psychological needs when we work. They are robbing us of our feelings of control and freedom because they monitor us and tell us what and how to do our work; sometimes they also pressure us to work faster. And they are decreasing our chances to create meaningful relationships with colleagues. (在大多数情况下,技术恶化了我们工作时心理需求的满足。他们剥夺了我们的控制感和自由感,因为他们监视我们并告诉我们做什么以及如何做我们的工作;有时他们也会迫使我们更快地工作。它们正在减少我们与同事建立有意义的关系的机会。)” 可知,技术降低了我们创造性的工作动机。故选D项。
25. 细节理解题。根据第三段“To fix and avoid these issues in the future, we have concluded from this review that we need to advocate for the use of psychological knowledge when designing technologies to be used in work environments. Psychologists are well equipped to advise how to design and use technologies in ways that will maintain or even improve the design of our work. (为了在未来解决和避免这些问题,我们从这篇综述中得出结论,在设计用于工作环境的技术时,我们需要倡导使用心理学知识。心理学家有能力就如何设计和使用技术提出建议,以保持甚至改进我们的工作设计。)”可知,对于在工作中引入技术,作者的建议是要咨询心理学专家。故选B项。
26. 主旨大意题。由文章第四段“Work is considered to be well-designed when it gives us some decision-making power, provides us with performance feedback, and allows us to connect with colleagues not only to increase relatedness but also to see the impact our work has on stakeholders(利益相关者). Good work design makes our work more meaningful.(当工作赋予我们一些决策权,为我们提供绩效反馈,并允许我们与同事联系,不仅可以增加相关性,还可以看到我们的工作对利益相关者的影响时,就被认为是精心设计的。好的工作设计使我们的工作更有意义。)”可知,本段主要讲精心设计工作的特点。故选C项。
27. 词句猜测题。根据第五段“Indeed, as work environments and career tracks become more dynamic and precarious, we need workers to be more active and flexible for the changeable situation. (事实上,随着工作环境和职业轨道变得更加动态和precarious,我们需要员工更加积极和灵活地应对多变的情况。)”中的“need workers to be more active and flexible for the changeable situation”可推断,此处表达工作环境和职业轨迹变得更加容易变化、不确定,precarious意为“不确定”与uncertain“多变的,不确定的”的意思一致。故选A项。

C 29. A 30. C 31. D

And every month another rock-bound Pacific island is advertised as ‘the last paradise on earth’.(人们可能会认为,旅游业日益增长的需求只会给接待度假者的国家带来好处。
根据第二段“However, the scale and speed of this growth seem set to destroy the very things tourists want to enjoy. Overcrowded beaches and the concrete jungles of endless hotels have begun to lose their appeal. Those countries with little experience of tourism can suffer most in a rush to make quick money. In recent years, Nepal’s forests, full of wildlife and rare flowers, were offered to tourists as one more untouched paradise, with the consequent destruction of precious trees and plants.(然而,这种增长的规模和速度似乎会破坏游客想要享受的东西。过度拥挤的海滩和不计其数的酒店组成的混凝土丛林已经开始失去吸引力。那些没有旅游经验的国家在急于赚钱的过程中受害最大。近年来,尼泊尔的森林充满了野生动物和稀有花卉,被游客视为又一个未被破坏的天堂,随之而来的是珍贵的树木和植物遭到破坏)”可知,作者在第2段提到“尼泊尔”来支持论点。故选A。

根据第一段的“Much research examines how social and environmental factors influence language change, but very little deals with the forces of human cognitive(认知的)select ion that fix certain words into the dictionary. For an extensive new study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, scientists investigated just that. (许多研究考察了社会和环境因素如何影响语言变化,但很少涉及将某些单词固定在词典中的人类认知选择的力量。在《美国国家科学院院刊》上发表的一项广泛的新研究中,科学家们对此进行了调查。)”可知,科学家们在美国国家科学院院刊上发表了一项广泛的新研究,正是为了研究这个问题。即科学家们研究了影响语言变化的人类认知选择的力量。故选C项。
33.细节理解题。 根据第二段的“In an experiment much like a game of telephone, thousands of participants read English-language stories and rewrote them to be read by other participants, who then rewrote them for others.(在一个类似于电话游戏的实验中,数千名参与者阅读英语故事,并将其重写以供其他参与者阅读,然后由其他参与者为其他人重写。)”
根据第三段“The results show three features that give words an “evolutionary(进化的)advantage” by helping them stick in the brain: First, words typically acquired at an early age (such as "hand" "uncle" or "today") are stabler. Next, concrete words remain better than abs tract ones: "dog" persists longer than "animal", which persists longer than "organism". Lastly, emotionally exciting words—whether negative or positive—tend to continue to exist.
根据第四段的“But Indiana University Bloomington cognitive scientist Fritz Breithaupt says the new study supports a more recent theory that language finally gets more efficient and easier to understand. (但印第安纳大学布卢明顿分校的认知科学家Fritz Breithaupt表示,这项新研究支持了一个更新的理论,即语言最终变得更高效、更容易理解。)”可推断, Fritz Breithaupt对此研究表示支持。故选D项。
第二节(共5小题:每小题2. 5分, 满分12. 5分)
阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
B 37. E 38. A 39. G 40. D
36. 前文“Sometimes our friends’ behavior can offend (冒犯) us; sometimes we can see changes they need to make — but how do we tell them? (有时朋友的行为会冒犯我们;有时我们可以看到他们需要做出的改变——但我们如何告诉他们)”引出对如何和朋友对话的困惑,后文段落给出了具体的建议,因此B项“Are there any ways to make difficult conversations easier? (有没有什么方法可以让困难的对话变得更容易)”符合语境,寻求让对话变得容易的方法,承前启后,其中的conversations和前文的tell呼应。故选B。
37. 前文“Evidence that can be agreed upon makes it easier for other people to recognize issues. (可以达成一致的证据使其他人更容易认识到问题)”解释需要什么样的证据,后文“Psychologist Andrea Bonior suggests framing problems with “I”. Saying “I feel hurt that you spend less time with me” is less accusatory (谴责的) than “You never spend time with me!” and is focused more clearly on the impact. (心理学家Andrea Bonior建议用“我”来定义问题。说“和我在一起的时间少了,我觉得很受伤”比说“你从来不和我在一起!”谴责的意味更少,并更清楚地关注其影响)”具体说明如何更好地表述这些证据,因此E项“Once you have proof, it’s important to highlight how it impacts us and others. (一旦你有了证据,重要的是要强调它如何影响我们和其他人)”符合语境,指出表述证据时需要注意的事项,承前启后,其中的proof和前文的Evidence呼应。故选E。
38. 空处位于段首,是段落主旨句,需统领段落内容。根据后文“Becoming tense might lead you to react badly and cause an argument. Bonior recommends that you should acknowledge the conversation could make you anxious. If you think about this yourself, it can help you focus on positive results. (变得紧张可能会导致你做出糟糕的反应,引发争吵。Bonior建议你应该承认谈话可能会让你焦虑。如果你自己思考这个问题,它可以帮助你专注于积极的结果)”可知,本段主要建议在谈话时避免紧张,以及给出如何避免紧张的方法,因此A项“Staying calm is vital. (保持冷静至关重要)”符合语境,点明要保持冷静,契合后文内容,其中的calm和后文的tense相对。故选A。
根据后文“Many experts recommend planning your words so that you can say things in a way that avoids conflict. However, Bonior cautions against overplanning, as this can stop you from being flexible enough to genuinely follow and participate in the discussion. (许多专家建议你计划措辞,这样你就可以用一种避免冲突的方式说话。然而,Bonior警告不要过度计划,因为这可能会阻止你足够灵活地真正跟随和参与讨论)”可知,本段主要建议避免过度计划,而要灵活地跟随和参与讨论,因此G项“We can lower the potential for conflict by listening to the other person and asking questions. (我们可以通过倾听他人并提出问题来降低发生冲突的可能性)”符合语境,点明应倾听他人并提出问题,契合后文内容,其中的listening to the other person和后文的follow呼应。故选G。
40. 前文“Complicated problems are unlikely to be solved with one conversation. Consider what is possible in one discussion and that it may be harder than you initially thought. (复杂的问题不可能一次谈话就能解决。考虑一下在一次讨论中什么是可能的,它可能比你最初想象的要困难)”指出一次谈话就解决问题是不现实的,建议只考虑一次谈话中可能的事情,因此D项“This will help you to set realistic goals for what you can achieve. (这将帮助你为你能达到的目标设定现实的目标)”符合语境,解释这样做的好处,承接前文,其中的This指代前一句的内容。故选D。

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料:根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
A week later, Jon received a call from the company.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next day after work, I found a thank-you note on my bedside table.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

B. Are there any ways to make difficult conversations easier?
C. Some people like to gather evidence to support their concerns.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
A week later, Jon received a call from the company.
