Every delicious steak you have ever enjoyed eating started with a good cut of meat. However, picking that perfect cut can be challenging — supermarkets are flooded with options, and it is not as straightforward as simply choosing the one with the highest price tag. Follow this guide for some advice.
Tenderloin (US), Fillet (UK), Eye Fillet (AUS/NZ)
A classic cut, the tenderloin comes from the strip of muscle tucked against the backbone of the animal. As this muscle does not do much work, this is the tenderest cut of beef — which also makes it the most expensive, and arguably the most desirable. We say “arguably” because, while the tenderloin is supremely lean and a favorite of those who love their steak to melt in their mouth, it can also be tasteless. Filet mignon, widely referred to as the creme (精华) dela creme of all steak cuts, is cut from the very tip of the tenderloin.
Ribeye (US/UK), Scotch fillet (AUS/NZ)
This cut, from the rib section of the animal, comes with an abundance of rich marbling. The ribeye won’t give you that same “melt-in-your-mouth” feeling, but it is still one of the tenderest cuts available. Differently, the ribeye is cooked with the bone in, while the Scotch fillet is not.
Strip (US), Sirloin (UK), Porterhouse (AUS/NZ)
Coming from the hindquarter of the animal, the strip is not quite as tender as the tenderloin, or loaded with quite as much flavor as the ribeye, but for many steak lovers, it is just right. The best part is that because this all-rounder has a bit more chew and a bit less marbling than those cuts, it tends to be less expensive.
T-bone
Can’t decide between the tenderloin and the strip? Why not both? The T-bone is cut with strip on one side of a bone, and tenderloin on the other. With two very different textures (口感) and flavors, the T-bone gets the best of both worlds, but it can also be more difficult to cook. The meat closer to the bone is slower to cook than the rest of the steak.
21. What can we know about the steaks from the passage?
A. It usually takes little time to cook T-bone.
B. All things considered, Ribeye is the best.
C. A good cut only means the most expensive one.
D. It's not a piece of cake to pick a perfect cut.
22. What makes the tenderloin the most expensive part among the steak?
A. Different textures. B. The tenderest cut.
C. Rich marbling. D. Much flavor.
23. Where can the passage be taken from?
A. A science daily. B. An agricultural journal.
C. A food magazine. D. A reading website.

Climate breakdown is always changing the taste and quality of beer, scientists have warned. The quantity and quality of hops (啤酒花), a key ingredient in most be, is being affected by global heating, according to a study. As a result, beer may become more expensive and manufacturers will have to adapt their brewing (酿造) methods.
Researchers forecast that hop yields in European growing regions will fall by 4 — 18% by 2050 if farmers do not adapt to hotter and drier weather, while the content of alpha acids in the hops, which gives beers their distinctive taste and smell, will fall by 20 — 31%.
“Beer drinkers will definitely see the climate change, either in the price tag or the quality,” said Miroslav Trnka, a scientist at the Global Change Research Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences and co-author of the study, published in the journal Nature Communications. “That seems to be inevitable from our data.”
Beer, the third-most popular drink in the world after water and tea, is usually flavoured with aromatic (芳香的) hops grown mostly in the middle latitudes that are sensitive to changes in light, heat and water. In recent years, demand for high-quality hops has been pushed up by a boom in craft beers with stronger flavors. But emissions of planet-heating gases are putting the plant at risk, the study found.
In Germany, the second-biggest hop producer in the world, average hop yields have fallen, the study found. Beer-brewing in central Europe dates back to thousands of years and is a cornerstone of the culture. The study found the alpha acid content of hops, which give beer its distinct aroma, had fallen in all regions.
Andreas Auernhammer, a hop farmer in Spalt in southern Germany, said the total rainfall in his fields had changed little but that now “the rain does not come at the right time”.
24.Which one is NOT an influential factor affecting the flavor and price of beer?
A.Climate shifts and greenhouse gases emissions.
B.Adaptation to new planting methods among farmers.
C.Geographical location and sensitivity of hops.
D.The decline in hop yields.
25.What does the underlined word “inevitable” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.incapable. B.affordable.
C.unavoidable. D.valuable
26.Which statement is FALSE?
A.Hops are vitally necessary ingredient in most beers.
B.It tends to rain less in European hops growing regions.
C.Beer producing has a long history in Germany.
D.Alpha acid content of hops had greatly decreased in the world.
27.The purpose of the passage is__________.
A.to emphasize the environmental influence on hops
B.to raise people’s awareness of environmental protection
C.to help hop farmers make more profits
D.to save hop production from global warming

For many students who desire to move around but not far freely, one of the most common vehicles is the bicycle. For such a seemingly simple invention, its story is not that simple.
Most historians trace its origin back to 1817, when a German nobleman named Karl von Drais invented a wooden, two-wheeled machine that riders moved forward with their feet. His invention became popular in both England and France, where it eventually became known as the velocipede. Unfortunately, it was eventually banned as a danger to pedestrians and was rarely seen after the early 1820s.
Things were quiet for several decades until the bicycle development took off in the 1860s. An important milestone happened in Paris in 1863 when pedals(踏板) were added to the front axle(轴) . This occurred in Pierre Michaux’s workshop, but it’s unclear whether he or his employee, Pierre Lallement, should be given credit for the innovation. Lallement moved to the United States, where he obtained a patent for “improvements in velocipedes” in 1866. These new machines proved to be popular, and the name “bicycle” had come into use by 1869. However, many people referred to them as “bone shakers”, which described their clunky ride due to a heavy wooden frame and steel wheels.
In the 1870s, “high wheelers” or “penny-farthings” became popular. However, with a large front wheel and a much smaller rear wheel, they could be dangerous, if riders had to stop suddenly, as they would “take a header” when their momentum(动量) carried them over the front wheel onto their heads. Eventually, English inventor John Kemp Starley designed a “safety bicycle” with two same small wheels, a chain drive, and a set of gears. With tires added in and brake(刹车) systems bettered in the following decades, bicycle production had skyrocketed to over one million bicycles by 1899.
Mass production of bicycles increased their popularity greatly, since they became affordable for the average person. Over the course of the 20th century, manufacturers continued to improve the features and design of bicycles as new technologies appeared.
28. Why did the early bicycle fail to be allowed after its invention?
A. It was made of bad materials. B. It was pushed by riders’ feet.
C. It was thought to be a threat to traffic safety. D. It had no patent from the official organization.
29. What change did the 1860s see in the bicycle?
A. The update of its axle. B. The growth of employees in its factory.
C. An advance in its production workshop. D. An improvement in its drive part.
30. What does the underlined word “clunky” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Easy and cheap. B. Practical and safe.
C. Heavy and awkward. D. Convenient and simple.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Bicycles’ Development Is Helpful to Environment
B. Bicycles Have a Long and Rich History
C. Bicycles Have Been Popular in the World

In 1972, the announcement of the Oncorhynchus rastrosus discovery frightened the scientific community. This old salmon(鲑鱼) species was originally thought to have sharp teeth. However, recent research suggests its teeth were more like warthog(疣猪) teeth, advertise to the side from its nose. These huge salmon, averaging over 8.5 feet in length, once lived in Pacific Northwest waters over 5 million years ago.
The original theory proposed these unique adaptations helped the fish during its migration from the ocean to freshwater. However, a new study published in PLOS ONE offers a different perspective. Researcher Kerin Claeson and her team suggest the teeth’s placement and structure were ideal for defense. The salmon’s powerful lateral(侧面的) muscles, responsible for their characteristic swimming style, could have enabled them to use these spikes(尖刺) aggressively against hunters.
Earlier speculations implied at a possible nest-building function for the unusual teeth. Signs of wear on some adult specimens implied rubbing(摩擦) against hard riverbed surfaces. However, the latest fossil evidence suggests a more oppositional purpose. The debate continues within the scientific community, with some experts arguing that the spikes were advantageous for digging nests or threatening competitors.
Regardless of their precise function, the reconstructed appearance of O. rastrosus challenges previous assumptions about this old marine creature. Its spectacular set of teeth would have made it a powerful existence in ancient waters, either as a defender of its territory or as an aggressive competitor in the wilds of the Pacific Northwest. This fascinating revision(修订) illustrates the dynamic evolutionary adaptations of creatures in response to ancient ecosystems, leaving us with a renewed appreciation for the complex and ever-changing story of life on Earth.
32. What do we know about the old salmon according to paragraph 1-2 ?
A. It has warthog’s teeth. B. It used to have sharp teeth.
C. It has existed over 5 million years ago. D. It is famous for his teeth.
33. How can old salmon stay away from their hunters ?
A. By the strengthen muscles and unique swimming style.
B. By building nest with their sharp teeth.
C. By rubbing against hard riverbed surfaces with their teeth.
D. By the spikes’ structure and placement.
34. What does the last paragraph mainly about ?
A. The powerful marine animals. B. The new understanding of old salmon.
C. The sharp teeth and its effect. D. The new finding of this creature.
35. Which can be the best title of this passage ?

Summer is a wonderful season filled with lots of fun in the sun. But what if your job requires you to spend several hours outside each and every day? 36 But today I’m sharing some easy ways to protect my skin from the sun’s harmful rays.
Time of Day is Important
The sun is at its most intense(强烈的) level and UV is at its strongest between the hours of 10a.m. and 4 p.m. We typically try to complete our outside chores(家务) before 10 a.m. 37 Sometimes after 4 p.m. we’re back outside to finish up the mowing(割草), fencing or cattle working and can often work until dark. I’ve learned that the shorter your shadow underneath you, the stronger the UV rays can be. 38
Cover Arms and Legs
When my husband mows the yard, he wears heavy jeans and a long-sleeve shirt. Although he was initially very hesitant to wear a long-sleeve shirt, he was actually cooler than he would have been otherwise because that hot sun was not shining directly upon his skin. 39 It’s good to remember: When possible, wear the tightest-weave fabric you can.
Gloves Serve Double Duty
40 Most of the time I like to wear lightweight garden gloves with special fingertips to allow me to operate my smart phone without removing the gloves. Wearing gloves not only helps me hold things more securely, but they also prevent the skin on my hands from the sun.
A. I typically wear gloves when working outside.
B. A hat that shades your face and ears is a smart move.
C. Sun cream has its place in people’s skin-protection choices.
D. These tips get me through most days of our work outdoors.
E. When the sun starts getting high in the sky, we come inside.
F. So it’s best to be outside when your shadow is longer than your height.
G. I’ve learned that the tighter the weave, the more protection is received.

Grandfather was a wise and honorable man. His house was not far from ours, and I would visit him often going home after school.
No matter how rotten I had been, I could tell Grandpa anything. My secrets were safe. Whenever there was a problem, he gave me the tools to fix it. I knew I would always find the best answer from him. He always understood. He loved me.
I remember a time when a bunch of us were playing baseball in the field behind Mrs. Ferguson’s house. I hit one pitch just right and… slam! It was a home run that soared high and away, and ended up breaking Old Lady Ferguson’s kitchen window! We all ran!
Walking home, my best friend, Tom, asked, "How will she ever know who did it? She’s blinder than a bat!” He had a point.
I was afraid that Mrs. Ferguson would stay mad at me, so I ran. I didn’t know what she would do. I tried to calm down. However, my stomach was in knots. On the way home, I imagined that she was a mean witch (女巫) chasing me, and the further way I ran, the larger she grew… until finally she towered over the whole town, seeing my every move with an evil eye. Thoughts rushed through my mind. Would Mrs. Ferguson stay mad at me? Would she call police? Worse still, would she tell my parents. I couldn’t even imagine the disappointment on Mom and Dad’s face. They were hoping I would act honestly and in a responsible way.
I decided to stop by Grandpa’s. I felt ashamed. I wanted to hide. I wanted to knock my head against a tree a thousand times and make the world just go away — as if punishing myself could undo things.
But inside me a voice said: “I would tell everything to Grandpa.”
“I was wrong,” I told him, with my head down. He must have known something was up by the expression on my face. He knew we had been warned many times about the dangers of playing where we shouldn’t.

第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Every delicious steak you have ever enjoyed eating started with a good cut of meat.

C
C. Bicycles Have Been Popular in the World
D. The World Becomes Smaller Because of Bicycles

A. The New Finding of the Teeth of Old Salmon
B. Old Salmon-the Most Defensive Animal in the Sea
C. Exploring the Old Marine Life

But he just listened while I continued talking. “I was wrong. I hate myself for what I did”, I told him, with my head down. I didn’t know what to do to make things right. I had been afraid that Mrs. Ferguson would stay mad at me. Finally my grandpa said, “What would you do if you were her?”After a while, I replied, “One solution is to tell her that I am sorry and offer to fix her window.”
Hearing the decision, grandpa smiled. “Doing what is right is not always easy,” he said, handing me the phone, “I am proud of you.” He did not make me do it. It was always my choice. As it turned out, Mrs. Ferguson was very kind and we even became really close friends. “Admitting what you are not proud of is the hardest thing,” said Grandpa. “Choosing to be honest makes others trust and respect you.”

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Every delicious steak you have ever enjoyed eating started with a good cut of meat.

【答案】24.B 25.C 26.D 27.A
【导语】本文是篇说明文。文章主要描述了全球变暖对啤酒花产量产生了很大的影响,从而改变了啤酒的味道和质量,希望人们能及时应对。
24.细节理解题。根据第一段“Climate breakdown is always changing the taste and quality of beer, scientists have warned. The quantity and quality of hops(啤酒花), a key ingredient in most be, is being affected by global heating, according to a study.”(科学家警告称,气候变化一直在改变啤酒的味道和质量。根据一项研究,啤酒花是大多数啤酒的关键成分,其数量和质量正受到全球变暖的影响。)、第二段“Researchers forecast that hop yields in European growing regions will fall by 4—18% by 2050 if farmers do not adapt to hotter and drier weather, while the content of alpha acids in the hops, which gives beers their distinctive taste and smell, will fall by 20—31%.”(研究人员预测,如果农民不适应炎热干燥的天气,到2050年,欧洲种植区的啤酒花产量将下降4-18%,而啤酒花中赋予啤酒独特味道和气味的阿尔法酸含量将下降20-31%。)第四段“Beer, the third-most popular drink in the world after water and tea, is usually flavoured with aromatic (芳香的) hops grown mostly in the middle latitudes that are sensitive to changes in light, heat and water. In recent years, demand for high-quality hops has been pushed up by a boom in craft beers with stronger flavors. But emissions of planet-heating gases are putting the plant at risk, the study found.(啤酒是世界上仅次于水和茶的第三种最受欢迎的饮料,通常用芳香啤酒花调味,这些啤酒花大多生长在中纬度地区,对光、热和水的变化很敏感。近年来,口味较重的精酿啤酒的繁荣推动了对高品质啤酒花的需求。但研究发现,使地球升温的气体排放正使该工厂处于危险之中。)”和第五段“In Germany, the second-biggest hop producer in the world, average hop yields have fallen, the study found. (研究发现,在世界第二大啤酒花生产国德国,啤酒花的平均产量已经下降。)”“ The study found the alpha acid content of hops, which give beer its distinct aroma, had fallen in all regions.(研究发现,啤酒花的α酸含量在所有地区都有所下降,啤酒花是啤酒独特香气的来源。)”可知,气候变化、温室气体排放、地理位置和啤酒花的敏感性以及啤酒花产量下降都会影响啤酒的风味和价格,而农民适应新种植方法不是影响因素。故选B。
25.词句猜测题。根据第三段“Beer drinkers will definitely see the climate change, either in the price tag or the quality,”(啤酒饮用者肯定会看到气候变化,无论是在价格标签上还是在质量上,)中的“definitely”和划线词所在句“That seems to be inevitable from our data.”(从我们的数据来看,这似乎是inevitable。)可知,这应该是肯定的,不可避免的,故inevitable表示“不可避免的”。故选C。
26.细节理解题。根据第五段“In Germany, the second-biggest hop producer in the world, average hop yields have fallen, the study found. (研究发现,在世界第二大啤酒花生产国德国,啤酒花的平均产量已经下降。)”可知,文章只是提到德国啤酒花的阿尔法酸含量下降,并未提及全世界的情况,D 选项说法错误。故选D。
27.推理判断题。根据第一段“Climate breakdown is always changing the taste and quality of beer, scientists have warned. The quantity and quality of hops(啤酒花), a key ingredient in most be, is being affected by global heating, according to a study.”(科学家警告称,气候变化一直在改变啤酒的味道和质量。 故选A。

29. 细节理解题。由文章第三段中“An important milestone happened in Paris in 1863 when pedals (踏板) were added to the front axle (轴).(1863年在巴黎,踏板被安装到前轴上,这是一个重要的里程碑。)”可知,19世纪60年代自行车的变化在于其驱动部分得到了改进,即在前轴上增加了踏板。故选D。
30. 词句猜测题。由文章第三段中“These new machines proved to be popular, and the name “bicycle” had come into use by 1869. However, many people referred to them as “bone shakers”, which described their clunky ride due to a heavy wooden frame and steel wheels.(事实证明,这些新机器很受欢迎,到1869年,“自行车”这个名字就开始使用了。然而,许多人把它们称为“摇骨车”,形容它们clunky行驶,因为它们有沉重的木制框架和钢轮。)”可知,“clunky”描述的是由于沉重的木制框架和钢轮,骑行时的笨重和不灵活。C选项(又重又笨拙)符合题意。故选C。
31. 主旨大意题。根据第一段中“For such a seemingly simple invention, its story is not that simple.(对于这样一个看似简单的发明,它的故事却没有那么简单。)”结合整篇文章讲述了自行车从1817年发明至今的发展历程,包括它的起源、重要里程碑、设计改进以及普及情况,因此最佳标题应概括为:自行车有着悠久而丰富的历史。故选B。

A. The New Finding of the Teeth of Old Salmon

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料:根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】
