WELCOME TO OUR LITTLE VILLAGE
Our Mission
Little Village is a nonprofit record company that seeks to shine the light of awareness on musicians who might not otherwise be heard, and in doing so further the belief that a life filled with diverse music builds empathy (同感), making for stronger communities and a better world.
Our Story
Jim Pugh’s work with well-known blues artists and top selling rock musicians has earned him many Grammy Awards, platinum, and gold records. After 40 years in the music industry, the idea for Little Village came to Pugh after taking a step back and thinking about what meant most to him.
Founded in 2015, Little Village is an arts non-profit that uses music as a tool to increase cross cultural understanding. Our day-to-day programming consists of recording and producing underground artists whose music has not yet been discovered outside their community. Through sharing multicultural music with American roots, we work to deepen understanding and promote empathy.
Our Artists
Little Village artists come from various communities and cultures but all share a common goal of exposing their music to audiences who they would not have otherwise reached.
Little Village seeks out these previously undiscovered artists, and provides them with the tools to launch a successful album (专辑), at no cost to the artist. All proceeds from sales of the albums are given back to the artists as a way to promote artist agency and ownership of their work. Recording an artist helps them connect to their community, while providing Little Village with an opportunity to share their music with the world and win the artist acclaim (高度评价). For more information on our artists, click here please.

It was a beautiful spring day. The Earth was finally awakening from her winter sleep. New life was everywhere. The sky was clear and blue. The air smelled sweet. The sun was kissing the world with its warmth.
I was driving to pick my son up from the sheltered workshop. On my drive I saw the flowers opening in people’s yards. The fields were full of yellow dandelions (蒲公英) with some already turning into little white balls of seeds. The trees were starting to awaken too. The flowers on them were white, purple, and pink. The songs of the birds were in the air as well. I was feeling the love from the creation all around me. I longed to be a part of it and share my love as well.
I pulled into the driveway of the sheltered workshop and parked my car. As I got out, I saw a lost little caterpillar (毛虫) crawling the wrong way towards the sidewalk. He was just about to go under my tire (轮胎) when I reached down and picked him up. I held him gently in my hand and walked over to the grassy hillside on the other side of the parking lot. I sat him down and said, “You will never become a butterfly if you get run over, my friend. Please stay in the grass.” Then I walked off with a smile on my face and a happiness filling my heart.
A friend once wrote me and asked what he could do to make a difference in this world. I wrote him back and said, “Everything!” Everything we do makes a difference in this world. Everything we do can help all the creation in the world. Every act of kindness, every shared smile, every moment of love makes a difference. Even saving a single butterfly is priceless.

When you travel to the Arctic, the Arctic is in charge. Weather and conditions can be unpredictable, so give yourself extra days either side of your booked tour and pack your spirit of luck. On the Arctic ice floe (浮冰) edge in Canada’s furthest and iciest northern reaches, you’ll find the most magical creatures on earth bathing in the 24-hour sun. But to get to Eclipse Sound you’ll need some courage and a guided tour. With Arctic Kingdom, which flies you out from Ottawa, you’ll stay in a tented safari (观兽旅行) camp and ride snowmobiles with Inuit guides to search for tusked narwhales feeding at the floe edge. There’s also a chance you’ll spot polar bears, beluga (白鲸) and bowhead whales while you watch for thousands of migratory (迁徙的) Arctic birds.
Ever seen polar bears playing in a field of wildflowers? In Canada, take the most surprising safaris on earth into landscapes that seem out of this world.
Churchill in Manitoba is a wildlife supercentre, with most of the activity increasing in the summer months. Pods of beluga whales, famous for their cute faces and friendly nature, swim through the Churchill River in July and August, and you can kayak (划皮船) or paddleboard (划冲浪板) out to them with Sea North Tours (you can go out by boat if it is more in your comfort zone or you’ve got young children with you). On a Churchill Wild summer safari, you’ll stay in remote country houses where you can sometimes see buttery white bears ambling past the windows. But you’ll also go out on walking and ATV adventures to spot them in the wild. If photography and ecology is your thing, Frontiers North runs day trips aboard a Tundra Buggy to explore the diverse lands and plants and kids will love the ride.

American muscle cars got their name because of their big, powerful engines and fast speed. Some of the gas-powered cars are so noisy, or even “thundering”. But interest worldwide in electric cars brings up this question: Can a muscle car go electric?
Car fans who loved the classic, powerful cars that used a lot of fuel are called “gearheads”. While the new battery-powered cars go fast and are easier to control than cars with big engines, they do not make much noise. Will “gearheads” someday become “battery-heads”? Stellantis, a carmaker, hopes so.
The company will stop making gas-powered versions of the Challenger and Charger (车名) by the end of 2023. Many European automakers already have electric versions of their high-performance cars. Governments around the world are now requiring cars to create less pollution, and so is America. As a result, plenty of carmakers are starting to centre their production on electric cars.
Tim Kuniskis leads the Dodge division for Stellantis. “It’s tough,” he said when discussing the idea that governments are considering financial punishments for companies that do not meet new requirements to reduce fuel use. Sam Abuelsamid, a researcher for Guidehouse Insights, said some carmakers will keep making models with traditional engines for about 10 years.
Dodge is working to improve its cars’ use of fuel but also keep the gearheads interested. A recent demonstration by Dodge showed off such a can that made a noise just like a muscle car even if they are using batteries.
Kuniskis, however, is a critic of his own company’s new electric Charger. “It doesn’t have the emotion,” he said, speaking of the electric cars. “It doesn’t have the drama. It doesn’t have the dangerous feeling of an engine.” But he did say that it would be the fastest ever. Times are changing. Businesses are starting to think about how to put electric driving systems into the “classic” cars. As he put it, “this isn’t about my generation, and the future is not the end of the muscle car.”
12. What made American muscle cars acquire the name?
A. Their looks like powerful muscles.
B. Their high speed and strong engines.
C. Their big size and attractive appearance.
D. Their thundering noise and lasting power.
13. What are Paragraphs 3~4 mainly about?
A. The future of high-performance electric cars.
B. The regulations of governments on pollution.
C. The change from gas-powered cars to electric ones.
D. The successful experience of Stellantis on electric cars.
14. What’s the attitude of Kuniskis towards the new electric cars?
A. Satisfied. B. Confident. C. Unclear. D. Unfavorable.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Some Problems the “Muscle Car” Is Facing
B. What Will Happen to the American “Muscle Car”?
C. How Can We Make Muscle Cars Create Less Pollution?
D. Differences Between Battery-Powered Cars and Gas-Powered Cars

It was the golden autumn when a young musician was touring all around the world. The moment he arrived at a small town lying along a clear and sweet river, a feeling of ease and comfort embraced him. The peaceful night fell, appealing to the young musician. He was casually (随便地) out walking and passing a cottage with the door open, when he heard someone inside playing the piano. Though it didn’t go smoothly, he was sure that it was just one of his compositions.
The musician stopped to listen, but the music stopped too. He got closer and overheard a conversation going—“It is too difficult! I can never play it well by myself! I’ve only heard someone else play it several times. It’s far from enough. How I wish I would gain a chance to attend a concert! What if it is played by the musician himself?”—a girl murmured (低语) and sighed. A man continued, “I can’t agree more, but we can’t afford to attend a concert. We are so poor.” “Sorry, Brother,” explained the girl, “Please let it go. I didn’t mean to. I was just kidding.” Though she tried to keep a calm tone, both the brother and the young musician could tell how much she wished to hear a real musician play it properly.
The young musician pushed the door and got into the house. With a single candle, a man was making shoes while a young lady was sitting at the piano. Nothing inviting was in sight except the old piano. What was unexpected was that the beautiful young lady was blind. The brother was too astonished to pronounce a word. Kind but embarrassed, he smiled at the stranger.
The musician smiled and nodded, approaching the piano slowly. Nervous and frightened, the brother dropped the shoe he was working on, jumped to his feet and rushed to protect his sister. “What are you doing? Keep off my sister!” The young lady was alarmed at the noise. She got off the piano, with head hanging and shoulders shaking.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Protecting Environment Starts from You and Me
To have a better understanding of the significance of environment protection, the Students’ Union launched an activity, whose theme was Protecting Environment Starts from You and Me last Saturday.
As is known to all, clear waters and green mountains are as valuable as gold and silver mountains. We first gathered together at City Hall at 7: 30 a.m., and then went to the railway station, park, and other places to collect bottles, plastic bags, wrapping papers, and so on. In the meantime, we brought a sign with us, which Read “Protecting Environment from You and Me” to raise public awareness of environmental protection.
Such a meaningful activity offered us a golden opportunity of building a more beautiful hometown.
第二节(满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】 Not until then did the young musician realized he was misunderstood. He held back his feet and explained politely, “I am a tourist here and I happen to play the piano well. I am familiar with what the young lady was playing just now. Would you mind me playing for you?” Although they didn’t know who the stranger was, they were glad to listen to him play for them. He sat down and began to play. With the music going, the sister and the brother got relaxed and began to enjoy it.
He played so well that all of them were soaked (沉浸) in beautiful music. Even when the lone candle in the room went out and the moon sent its lovely beams shining into the room, he still played! When he left, it was deep night. He was so inspired by the appreciation of his music by the young lady and the beauty of the atmosphere in and outside the room. Never had the poor sister and brother had such a splendid night. It was music that brought happiness to them all!
