Summer presents a collection of festivals that combine fun, charity, and awareness. Here are four special celebrations happening in June:
National Go Barefoot Day (June 1)
Established after the 2004 tsunami, this day promotes barefoot walking for health benefits like stronger muscles while supporting Soles4Souls, a non-profit that has provided 19 million shoes globally. You can join barefoot activities or organize shoe collections. By simply taking off your shoes, you can improve your own health while helping children get the shoes they need.
World Oceans Day (June 8)
Oceans cover 66% of Earth and provide 50% of our oxygen, yet 8 million tons of plastic waste pollute them yearly. This day honors the ocean’s irreplaceable roles while inspiring worldwide participation. People can get involved by cleaning beaches, reducing single-use plastics, and watching educational films — turning awareness into action for a healthier planet.
Be a Kid Again Day (June 12)
This lighthearted day encourages adults to relive childhood joys — whether sliding down playground slides, building sandcastles, or rewatching classic kids’ movies. Beyond personal enjoyment, the celebration also supports meaningful causes like A Kid Again, a US non-profit organization that provides fun-filled adventures for children with life-threatening illnesses.
Helen Keller Day (June 27)
Held every year on June 27, this day honors Helen Keller (1880-1968) who became the first person with her disabilities to earn a college degree and wrote 12 books. While celebrating her amazing life, the day also recognizes all those who support the blind and deaf community through events like charity fashion shows and public readings of Keller’s inspirational works.
21. Which festival combines physical health with caring for children?
A. Be a Kid Again Day. B. Helen Keller Day.
C. National Go Barefoot Day. D. World Oceans Day.
22. Who benefit most from the organization A Kid Again?
A. The young seeking adventures. B. Parents facing health challenges.
C. The elderly treasuring childhood. D. Children fighting serious diseases.
23. What do the four festivals have in common?
A. Environmental focus. B. Child-centered activities.
C. Physical fitness promotion. D. Celebrations for social good.

It was 3 a.m. when my phone buzzed (嗡嗡声) repeatedly, disturbing my baby who had just fallen asleep after an hour of rocking. It was a WhatsApp message from a mom friend. The screen lit up with a flood of messages — fellow moms discussing sleeping training, arranging playdates, and sharing Instagram posts about motherhood. Their cheerful “We can do this, mamas!” only increased my tiredness. The blue light from my phone screen left me wide awake with a racing heart.
It’s in this moment that I made my change, sliding my finger down from the top right-hand corner of my phone to access the control centre, hitting wildly at the little moon pattern that stops notifications (通知) in their tracks, and hanging up my virtual door sign: Do Not Disturb.
That was three years ago. Since then, I’ve seldom turned notifications back on, except when waiting for important calls. I do not want to be disturbed; nor, actually, do I want my phone to demand as much of my attention as my now toddler (学步儿童) or his new baby brother does. Sure, I’m not easily reachable, which upsets my partner, but I’m calmer not being always there for the world and those WhatsApp-mad moms.
I still work on my self-control to avoid checking my phone all the time for fear of missing out. The pull of unread messages is strong, but in general, the benefit to my mental health, sleep, and parenting is obvious. My phone is still a big part of my life, but it no longer disturbs my daily life as much as before.
I believe this change has made me a better and more caring mother. There are, after all, few things that seek quite as much attention as toddlers and WhatsApp groups. Given the choice, I’d rather focus on my three-year-old trying to climb curtains, put the dog in the washing machine, or feed his baby brother a stick of chalk than on a phone buzzing with notifications pretending to be urgent.
24. What made the author turn on “Do Not Disturb” three years ago?
A. Nonstop late-night messages. B. Complaints about phone overuse.
C. Pointless mom-group chats. D. Failures in baby sleeping training.
25. Why does the author mention her children in paragraph 3?
A. To show her busy schedules.
B. To describe her family affairs.
C. To explain her turning off notifications.
D. To compare her children’s attention needs.
26. What is the author’s current phone usage like?
A. She maintains strict control over notifications.
B. She checks messages continuously for updates.
C. She feels pressured to respond to every group message.
D. She finds it impossible to balance phone use with parenting.
27. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this article?
A. To share her phone-habit change.
B. To solve problems in socializing.
C. To warn against smartphone overuse.
D. To discuss digital-age parenting struggles.

By accident, researchers have photographed Venus' surface from space for the first time.
Though the planet's rocky body is hidden beneath the thick clouds, telescopes aboard NASA's Parker Solar Probe (帕克太阳探测器) managed to capture (捕捉) the first visible-light images of the surface taken from space, researchers reported in the February 16 Geophysical Research Letters.
“We've never actually seen the surface through the clouds at these wavelengths before, ”said Lori Glaze, director of NASA's Planetary Science Division, on February 10.
Though the Parker Solar Probe was built to study the sun, it must make regular flybys of Venus. The planet's gravity pulls the probe, tightening its orbit and bringing it closer to the sun. Those assists from Venus helped the spacecraft (航天器) make headlines when it became the first probe to enter the sun's atmosphere. It was during two such flybys in July 2020 and February2021 that the probe's WISPR telescopes captured the new images. While WISPR found Venus' dayside too bright to image, it was able to recognize extensive surface features, through the clouds on the nightside.
The photographs show a planet is so hot that it looks much like red-hot iron, said Brian Wood, an astrophysicist at the U. S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D. C. , and a co-author of the paper. “The pattern of bright and dark that you see is basically a temperature map,” he said — brighter regions are hotter and darker regions are cooler. This pattern correlates well with topographic maps (地形图) previously produced from radar and infrared (雷达和红外线) surveys. Highlands appear dark and lowlands appear bright, Wood said.
The images came as NASA prepared to launch two missions to Venus. “The new photographs”, Wood said, “may help in the interpretation of the observations taken in the future from these new missions. ”
28. How did the researchers photograph Venus' surface from space?
A. By detecting wavelengths. B. By looking for thick clouds.
C. By tracking Venus' rocky body. D. By using the Parker Solar Probe.
29. What helped the spacecraft enter the sun's atmosphere?
A. Venus' gravity. B. The sun's assists.
C. Its slowing down. D. Its flybys of the sun.
30. What can we learn from Wood's words about the photographs?
A. They were taken by infrared and radar. B. They fail to reveal Venus' surface features.
C. Brighter areas represent higher temperatures. D. Darker colors mean lowlands in the topography.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. NASA prepared to finish two missions to Venus
B. Parker Solar Probe has further explored Venus' surface
C. The secrets of Venus' surface uncovered by researchers
D. The first visible-light images of Venus' surface taken from space

Have you ever imagined an insect-inspired robot, which weighs less than a gram, could one day help out in surgery (外科手术)?
Scientists have designed this small, “insect-bot” called mCLARI that can control and even change its body shape as it travels in different environments to fit through gaps. It’s 2 centimeters long, weighs less than 0.97 grams and can travel at a speed of 6 centimeters per second. It’s the smaller, faster replacement to CLARI, which was designed by the same team.
“Because of the robot’s small size and ability to change shape, we expect usage of this technology in four important areas,” the lead author Kaushik Jayaram said. These include disaster (灾害) response , check on high-value objects, environmental monitoring and medical treatment.
“In the long term, we hope such robots will be used more widely in moving through human bodies and performing surgeries that can’t be easily done at present,” Jayaram said. With mCLARI, Jayaram’s team is moving closer to creating robots that can fit in different environments—just like the insects they’re inspired by.
The mCLARI robot has four legs and can move in narrow spaces by changing between running forward and side-to-side and can use different speeds in human bodies. Its legs are joined to its body through joints (关节), which enables mCLARI to change its body shape based on the environment it is in. For example, its legs can be lengthened up to 50% in certain spaces.
As follow-up work, the scientists want to give mCLARI more power and sensing ability while helping the surgeries. “We are also excited about understanding the effect of shape change on improving functions of robots,” Jayaram said. “And this is sure a great one-step forward of the technology. The robot will have entered the market by 2025 and will bring greater benefits to mankind, especially in medical treatment.”
32. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Possible application fields of the robot. B. Different types of the robot.
C. Several important features of the robot. D. Working process of the robot.
33. Which of the following can best describe mCLARI?
A. Valuable but uncontrollable. B. Modern but high-cost.
C. Heavy and time-consuming. D. Advanced and effective.
34. What is Jayaram’s attitude towards the robot?
A. Worried. B. Positive. C. Doubtful. D. Uninterested.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Jayaram: A Scientist Studying Robot Intelligence
B mCLARI Is Already Widely Available in the Market
C. CLARI: A Robot Invented by Inspiration from the Insects
D. A Tiny Shape-changing Robot Will Help Perform Surgeries

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Scrolling through social media often makes us feel left behind by others’ seemingly perfect lives. While admiration for others’ achievements is natural, constant comparison can harm your confidence. Here are practical solutions:
____36____ It’s hard to compare yourself to others if you’re crystal clear about your personal values. For example, if family time matters most, don’t measure yourself against career-driven people. Write down what success means to you and revisit the list whenever envy strikes.
Replace comparison with curiosity. When seeing others’ achievements, ask “What skills can I learn from them?”. A classmate’s high scores could inspire better study methods rather than self-doubt. ____37____
Be selective about social media. Social media can be both a blessing (恩赐) and a curse, depending on how you use it. ____38____ Follow those sharing real struggles and positive messages instead. Taking care of what you see on social media can help keep you calm.
Set daily time limits for social media. ____39____ Activities like hiking, cooking with family, or quiet reading build real happiness that no “likes” can replace. Physical world connections reduce screen addiction.
Practice gratitude to break the comparison cycle. Each night, write three things you’re thankful for — a good grade, a friend’s kindness, or sunny weather. ____40____
Remember, someone else’s success doesn’t erase yours. Run your own race guided by your values. Start building mental strength today!
A. Develop your own understanding of success.
B. Real fulfillment comes from offline experiences.
C. Establish measurable goals for self-development.
D. This mindset turns anxiety into chances for growth.
E. Social media requires strict time management strategies.
F. Unfollow accounts showing unrealistic beauty or wealth.
G This simple habit trains your brain to focus on existing blessings.

【86题答案】
【答案】Dear Mr. Brown,
Thrilled about the upcoming “Our School in 60 Seconds” series on TikTok! To help promote campus culture globally, I’m writing to share my idea about the video filming.
The video would capture dynamic moments from sunrise on campus to interactive classes, science experiments and artistic performances, all set to uplifting music. By highlighting authentic learning experience and extracurricular achievements, this concept perfectly showcases our vibrant school culture while appealing to global teens. Besides, the fast-paced visual style is tailor-made for the 60-second filming, directly boosting views and engagement.
I do hope my idea would help make an excellent post for our school’s TikTok account and could spark worldwide interest in Chinese campus life. I’d be happy to assist with further filming if needed.
Best regards,
Li Hua
