Imagine using your coat to look through the Internet, send and receive messages, and even read a map. Yes, you read that correctly—your coat.
It may sound silly, but it’s something scientists are working on. Researchers at Shanghai’s Fudan University have made a new type of cloth that can be used as a digital display(显示屏).
Professor Peng Huisheng and his team have spent more than 10 years trying to make “digital cloth”. After testing different combinations, they chose two materials that worked: silver-plated yarn(镀银纱)that can light up and a kind of thread(纺线)that conducts(传导)electricity.
The results have been admirable. It’s not only wearable and foldable, but also washable. After being put through 100 wash-and-dry cycles in a washing machine and folded 10,000 times, the cloth remained almost unchanged.
Peng believes that the new cloth could be used for many things. For example, it could allow drivers to view a GPS map on their arms while they drive around. It could also help people communicate better if they have language barriers(障碍)or disabilities.
In one test, Peng’s team collected brainwaves from volunteers who had either been playing a game or meditating. The brainwaves were then translated into messages like “anxious” or “relaxed” and shown on the cloth. This could help hearing-impaired and speech-impaired people “talk” to each other in the future.
“We hope that new materials will shape next-generation electronic devices by changing the way we interact with them,” said Peng.

Height is just one of the thousands of features your genes(基因)decide. In fact, because you have two parents, your genes provide you with a height that usually lands somewhere between the heights of your parents. If both your parents are tall, then most probably you will be tall, too. If you have questions about how tall you’re going to be, ask your doctor if he or she can help you find it out.
But genes don’t decide everything. For example, eating an unhealthy diet can keep you from growing to your full potential(潜力). Getting plenty of sleep and enough exercise will help you grow to the expected height.
Maybe you’re wondering how fast you should grow. It depends. There’s no right answer. Generally speaking, kids grow about two inches a year between the age three and the time when they start puberty.
Your doctor will know how your growth has been going over the years. Two centimeters here and two inches there are not nearly as important as the height you’re at now, how you’ve been growing up to this height, or what other changes your body may be going through.
Don’t be nervous if you seem to have grown a lot in a very short time. Everyone has a growth spurt(高峰) during puberty. The age for starting puberty is about 10 for girls and about 11 for boys. But it can be earlier or later, between 7 and 13 for girls and between 9 and 15 for boys.
You’ll usually begin to notice that you’re growing faster about a year or so after your body starts to show the first changes of puberty.
1.How can we know how tall we will be?
A.We should have a healthy diet. B.We can ask our doctor for help.
C.We should have enough exercise. D.We can record our growth during puberty.
2.The underlined word “puberty” means in Chinese.
A.童年时期 B.婴幼儿时期 C.习惯养成期 D.青春期
3.Which of the following may the writer agree with?
A.Your body may be going through other changes when you are growing taller.
B.You should see a doctor when you have grown a lot in a short time.
C.Boys are always taller than their parents when they grow up.
D.Girls start their puberty much earlier than boys do.
4.If James hopes to grow fast, what should he avoid doing?
A.Getting plenty of sleep. B.Never staying up late.
C.Eating an unhealthy diet. D.Doing enough exercise.
5.This passage is mainly about .
A.why the genes are important B.how fast your growth can be
C.why you look like your parents D.how tall you are going to be

Big data(数据) is a lot of sets of information that are put together so they can be used by a computer programme. The computer programme looks for different kinds of answers or patterns in the data. Big data can have different kinds of information from many sources, such as information that comes from schools, social media sites, companies and governments. 1 Another set can have what they like, where they go, and how much time they spend on the computer.
2 The government uses it to understand how many people travel on buses or trains. This information is then used to make bus or train systems better. Some schools use big data to understand which children may need extra help in class. The teacher can then give certain students more help or support so those students can succeed in school. Companies use big data, too. 3 One company uses weather data to see when people eat the most ice creams.
Big data can be used for different purposes. Some hospitals use big data to predict if a baby who is born too early will get sick. 4 It can also be used to predict which kinds of people are likely to break the law or hurt others, even if they have not done anything wrong.
Why can big data be used for various purposes? It is because the computer programmes used to read and understand big data are written by people who think in a certain way. They build a model of those ideas. The model is then used to read the data. Sometimes, good ideas are helpful for people or business. 5
A.Big data can be used in many ways.
B.The hospitals can then take extra steps to take care of that baby so he or she does not get sick.
C.One set of data can have people’s names and addresses.
D.It helps them understand who buys their products.

C.Boys are always taller than their parents when they grow up.
D.Girls start their puberty much earlier than boys do.

The “double reduction” policy has been carried out since July, 2021. In order to learn about the changes of the students’ life, Yangcheng Middle School did research.
As the graph shows, it took the students 2 hours to finish homework before carrying out the “double reduction” policy, but now they spend 80 minutes doing their homework. What’s more, they used to spend only 30 minutes doing exercise, while they can have 60 minutes to do exercise now.
The students think that they can have more time to take part in some interesting activities such as playing football, playing the piano and drawing.
In my opinion, the “double reduction” policy is good for us. We can not only relax ourselves but also have more time to communicate with our parents. I believe we can study happily because of the “double reduction” policy.
