Coming in all shapes and sizes, London’s skyscrapers attract visitors from around the world. Here are four to look out for.
London Bridge Tower
Commonly known as the Shard (碎片) of Glass, it’s an 87-storey skyscraper in London that forms part of the London Bridge Quarter development. It was designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano. At 310 metres, it’s the tallest building in Western Europe. Construction began in March 2009, and it was completed on 5th July 2012. The observation deck (观景平台) on the top floor is open to the public.
The Leadenhall Building
Lying on 122 Leadenhall Street and called the “Cheesegrater” because of its wedge-like (楔形) shape, it is the second tallest building in the City of London with a height of 224 metres. It was designed by Richard Rogers. There are exterior glass lifts on the building, similar to the ones in the neighbouring Lloyd’s building, which was also designed by Rogers.
30 St Mary Axe
Known informally as “the Gherkin (小黄瓜)”, it’s a skyscraper in London’s main financial district, the City of London. It was completed in December 2003 and opened in April 2004. With 41 floors, the tower is 180 metres tall. It was designed by Norman Foster and Arup engineers.
20 Fenchurch Street
Nicknamed (给……起绰号) the Walkie Talkie (对讲机), it’s 160 metres tall and was designed by Uruguayan architect Rafael Vinoly. It has a large viewing deck and sky gardens on the top three floors, which are open to the public. However, the special shape of the building creates a sun ray that can reach temperatures of up to 70℃, which is so powerful that it can burn carpets and start fires.
1. Which skyscraper will attract bird’s-eye view enthusiasts most?
A. London Bridge Tower. B. The Leadenhall Building.
C. 30 St Mary Axe. D. 20 Fenchurch Street.
2. What is the disadvantage of the Walkie Talkie?
A. High gardening costs. B. Overcrowded decks.
C. Extreme heat effects. D. Limited viewing angles.
3. What do the four skyscrapers have in common?
A. All were designed by British architects. B. All are outside the financial district.
C. All were completed after 2010. D. All have nicknames.
根据文章London Bridge Tower部分“It was designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano. At 310 metres, it’s the tallest building in Western Europe.(它由意大利建筑师Renzo Piano设计。高达310米,是西欧最高的建筑.)”和“The observation deck (观景平台) on the top floor is open to the public.(顶层的观景平台向公众开放。)” 故选A。
根据文章20 Fenchurch Street部分“However, the special shape of the building creates a sun ray that can reach temperatures of up to 70℃, which is so powerful that it can burn carpets and start fires.(然而,这座建筑的特殊形状会产生一道能达到70℃高温的太阳射线,其威力之大足以烧坏地毯并引发火灾。)”
根据文章London Bridge Tower部分“Commonly known as the Shard (碎片) of Glass, it’s an 87-storey skyscraper in London that forms part of the London Bridge Quarter development.(通常被称为“玻璃碎片”,它是伦敦一座87层的摩天大楼,是伦敦桥区开发项目的一部分。)”、 The Leadenhall Building部分“Lying on 122 Leadenhall Street and called the “Cheesegrater” because of its wedge-like (楔形) shape, it is the second tallest building in the City of London with a height of 224 metres.(位于122号Leadenhall街,因其楔形形状被称为“奶酪刨”,它是伦敦城内第二高的建筑,高度为224米。)”、 30 St Mary Axe部分“Known informally as “the Gherkin (小黄瓜)”, it’s a skyscraper in London’s main financial district, the City of London.(非正式地称为“小黄瓜”,它是伦敦主要金融区——伦敦城内的一座摩天大楼。)” 起绰号) the Walkie Talkie (对讲机), it’s 160 metres tall and was designed by Uruguayan architect Rafael Vinoly.(绰号为“对讲机”,高160米,由乌拉圭建筑师Rafael Vinoly设计。)”

It was a normal day, Julia and I were working in the container checking the instruments and doing other routine operations when the phone rang. It was Ian. He wanted to know if one of us could go outside to be their polar bear guard for the next few hours. We looked at each other and it was soon decided that I would go. Julia had more work to do in the container.
Obviously shooting was our last choice; there were a lot of other actions that needed to be taken beforehand in order to scare the bear away. But, if worse came to worst, we needed to be ready. The other reason for which a female “green hand like me was allowed to guard was that I would be working at the balloon site that is the closest to the ship. This means that in case a polar bear comes we could reach the ship in just a few minutes and thus it was really unlikely that I would have to use the gun.
Being a polar bear guard is not the most exciting job out there: you have to stand in the cold, downwind from the group, from where the polar bear is likely to approach because of the smell, looking at the horizon for several hours. On the other hand, the guard job gives you a lot of time to think and reflect while staring at this breathtaking landscape. This is one of the reasons why I often volunteer to be a polar bear guard.
I stayed outside only for a couple of hours but this was enough to refresh my brain with clean Arctic air and come up with new ideas and thoughts to discuss with Julia, Ian and the other scientists on board, trying to solve a big puzzle of our observations. Similar “recreational” activities were one of the reasons why I enjoyed so much this expedition and I will certainly miss them afterwards!
4. Why does the author guard at the balloon site?
A. To admire impressive landscapes. B. To leave safely from here.
C. To send off warning signals. D. To gather with her colleagues.
5. What does the author mention about her working place as a polar bear guard?
A. It is frequently visited by polar bears.
B. It is filled with various wildlife smells.
C. It provides opportunities for reflection.
D. It is extremely cold near the pole.
6. What does the author gain from the work shift?
A. Friendship and joy. B. Confidence and courage.
C. Responsibility and duty. D. Relaxation and insight.
7. What is the text most likely to be?
A. A novel. B. A journal. C. A report. D. A review.
B 5. C 6. D 7. B
根据第二段“The other reason for which a female “green hand like me was allowed to guard was that I would be working at the balloon site that is the closest to the ship. This means that in case a polar bear comes we could reach the ship in just a few minutes and thus it was really unlikely that I would have to use the gun.(像我这样的女性“新手”被允许看守的另一个原因是,我将在离船最近的气球站点工作。这意味着,如果一只北极熊来了,我们可以在几分钟内到达船上,因此我真的不太可能使用步枪)”可知,作者在气球站点站岗是以便遇到危险时可以快速从那里离开,安全回到船上,即作者选择在气球站点守卫是因为该位置便于安全撤离。故选B。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“On the other hand, the guard job gives you a lot of time to think and reflect while staring at this breathtaking landscape. This is one of the reasons why I often volunteer to be a polar bear guard.(另一方面,守卫的工作给了你很多时间去思考和反思,同时凝视着这令人惊叹的风景。这也是我经常志愿做北极熊守卫的原因之一)”可知,作者在担任北极熊警卫的工作地点有很多时间去反思,即提供了反思的机会。故选C。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“I stayed outside only for a couple of hours but this was enough to refresh my brain with clean Arctic air and come up with new ideas and thoughts to discuss with Julia, Ian and the other scientists on board, trying to solve a big puzzle of our observations. Similar “recreational” activities were one of the reasons why I enjoyed so much this expedition and I will certainly miss them afterwards!(我只在外面待了几个小时,但这足以让我的大脑在清新的北极空气中恢复活力,并产生新的想法和想法,与朱莉娅、伊恩和船上的其他科学家讨论,试图解决我们观察到的一个大难题。类似的“娱乐”活动是我如此喜欢这次探险的原因之一,我以后肯定会想念它们的!)”可知,作者只在外面待了几个小时,但这足以让她用纯净的北极空气提神,并提出新的想法,与船上的其他科学家进行讨论,由此推断出,作者在这次值班期间得到了放松,增长了见识。故选D。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段中“It was a normal day, Julia and I were working in the container checking the instruments and doing other routine operations when the phone rang. It was Ian. He wanted to know if one of us could go outside to be their polar bear guard for the next few hours.(这是平常的一天,茱莉亚和我正在集装箱里检查仪器和做其他日常操作,这时电话响了。是伊恩。他想知道在接下来的几个小时里,我们中是否有人能出去做他们的北极熊守卫。) ”结合文章内容可知,文章以第一人称叙述了个人在北极科考期间的日常工作,担任北极熊警卫的经历和感受;由此可以推断出,本文最有可能是一篇日志。故选B。
C
Dementia (痴呆症) is proving very difficult to treat with drugs, but perhaps there are brain-healthy things hiding in our diets. A study of more than 50,000 participants in the UK Biobank has found that people who eat a handful of nuts every day may lower their risk of all-cause dementia.
Compared with people over the age of 60 who didn’t eat nuts, those who reported having up to 30g of nuts a day had a 16% lower risk of developing dementia in the years to come, but the result was only found in those who were not considered overweight, who get a normal amount of sleep, and who did not smoke or drink daily.
Health researcher Bruno Bizzozero-Peroni and his colleagues at Castilla-La Mancha drew on a group of people from the UK Biobank, enrolled (登记) between 2007 and 2012. Participants were tracked for an average of 7 years. Over the course of the study, the rate of all-cause dementia was 2.8%. Those who said they ate 30g of nuts a day were less likely to fall into that risk category.
New evidence suggests that as many as 40% of dementia cases can be prevented or even delayed by changing certain lifestyle risk factors, like smoking, drinking, or exercising. Diet seems to be a key player. Several systematic reviews have found healthy diets, like the Mediterranean diet, are linked to a reduced risk of dementia. A recent study on 60,000 Britons found that following a Mediterranean diet decreases the risk of dementia by as much as 23%. However, the numbers need to be studied further, especially since only a quarter of the UK Biobank participants reported regularly eating nuts.
8. From whom are these results concluded?
A. The participants younger than 60. B. The participants avoiding salted nuts.
C. The participants developing dementia. D. The participants having healthy living habits.
9. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the study?
A. Its process. B. Its cause. C. Its risk. D. Its significance.
10. What do we know from the last paragraph?
A. Following a Mediterranean diet is good for people of all ages.
B There is evidence to show diet is the key play to avoid dementia.
C. The study was carried out among 60,000 people eating nuts every day.
D. It is necessary to do further research because of the limitation of the study.
11. Where is the text probably found?
A. On a food poster. B. On a sports blog.
C. In a medicine magazine. D. In a cooking brochure.
D 9. A 10. D 11. C

根据第二段中“These results were only found in those who were not considered overweight, who get a normal amount of sleep, and who did not smoke or drink daily. (这些结果仅在体重正常、睡眠充足且无每日吸烟饮酒习惯的人群中出现)”可知,这些结果是从有健康生活习惯的参与者中得出的。故选D。
【9题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Health researcher Bruno Bizzozero-Peroni and his colleagues at Castilla-La Mancha drew on a group of people from the UK Biobank, enrolled (登记) between 2007 and 2012. Participants were tracked for an average of 7 years. Over the course of the study, the rate of all-cause dementia was 2.8%. Those who said they ate 30g of nuts a day were less likely to fall into that risk category.(健康研究员布鲁诺·比索泽罗·佩罗尼及其卡斯蒂利亚-拉曼查大学的同事选取了英国生物银行2007至2012年间登记的人群进行追踪研究。在平均7年的随访期内,参与者全因痴呆发病率为2.8%。每日摄入30克坚果的人群显示出更低的患病风险)”可知,该段主要讲述了研究的过程。故选A。
根据最后一段“However, the numbers need to be studied further, especially since only a quarter of the UK Biobank participants reported regularly eating nuts.(然而,这些数据还需要进一步研究,尤其是因为只有四分之一的英国生物样本库参与者表示会定期食用坚果)”可知,研究存在局限性,有必要深入研究,故选D。
D
California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s according to a study published Tuesday. The number of trees larger than two feet across has decreased by 50 percent on more than 46,000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent; in parts of southern California the decrease was nearly 75 percent.
So serious is this issue that many environmentalists show their concern and try to figure out the main reasons behind it. Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick McIntyre, an ecologist who was the lead author of the study. Woodcutters preferred big trees. Housing development encroached on the woods. Heavy wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources.
But a study of California forests also documented a widespread death of big trees that was clear even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development. The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage. The researchers figured out water stress by calculating how much water trees were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into consideration such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness (潮湿) of soil and the timing of snowmelt (融雪).
“Since the 1930s”, McIntyre said, “the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air, and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season. Although the government and organizations have been taking measures to deal with these problems, we may see even fewer big trees surviving in the next few decades, if these trends continue.”
12. What’s the purpose of the figures listed in Paragraph 1?
A. To prove the seriousness of big-tree loss in California.
B. To present the distribution of big trees in California forests.
C. To compare the differences of big trees in the north and south.
D. To show the different decrease of big trees in different regions.
13. What does the underlined phrase “encroached on” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Do good to. B. Take advantage of. C. Kept away from. D. Gave way to.
14. What is McIntyre’s attitude towards the current situation of big trees from the last paragraph?
A. Confident. B. Doubtful. C. Concerned. D. Praising.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. California’s Forests: Why Are Big Trees Important?
B. California’s Big Trees: Will Cutting Be Prohibited Soon?
C. California’s Forests: Where Have All the Big Trees Gone?
D. California’s Big Trees: Should More Be Grown in California?
A 13. B 14. C 15. C

根据第一段中“California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s according to a study published Tuesday. The number of trees larger than two feet across has decreased by 50 percent on more than 46,000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. (根据周二发表的一项研究,自20世纪30年代以来,加州已经失去了一半的大树。这项新研究发现,在加州超过46000平方英里的森林中,直径超过两英尺的树木数量减少了50%)”和“In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent; in parts of southern California the decrease was nearly 75 percent.(在塞拉高原地区,大树的数量减少了55%以上;在南加州部分地区,这一数字下降了近75%)”可知,作者在第一段中列举这些数字是为了证明加利福尼亚州大树损失的严重性。故选A项。
根据第一段中“California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s according to a study published Tuesday. The number of trees larger than two feet across has decreased by 50 percent on more than 46,000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds(根据周二公布的一项研究,自20世纪30年代以来,加州已经失去了一半的大树。
根据最后一段中“Although the government and organizations have been taking measures to deal with these problems, we may see even fewer big trees surviving in the next few decades, if these trends continue. (尽管政府和组织一直在采取措施应对这些问题,但如果这些趋势持续下去,未来几十年我们可能会看到存活的大树更少)”可知,McIntyre认为未来几十年存活的大树会更少,说明他对于当前大树的生存状况表示担忧。故选C项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段中“California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s according to a study published Tuesday. (根据周二发表的一项研究,自20世纪30年代以来,加州已经失去了一半的大树)”可知,本文主要介绍了加利福尼亚州自20世纪30年代以来大型树木数量急剧减少的现象,并分析了原因。故C项“California’s Forests: Where Have All the Big Trees Gone? (加州的森林:所有的大树都去哪儿了?)”概括了文章的主要内容,适合作为文章标题。故选C项。

【答案】Dear friends,
It’s a great honor to share my labor experience with you.
Last summer, I took part in a community gardening project. Together with other volunteers, I learned how to dig the soil, sow seeds and water the vegetables. Though my hands got dirty and I was tired, watching the plants grow into tasty vegetables filled me with pride.
This experience taught me that labor is not just physical work but a bridge to growth. It develops patience and responsibility — qualities hard to gain from textbooks. Moreover, working alongside others strengthened my teamwork skills. As we embrace labor, we not only develop practical abilities but also understand the true meaning of “No pains,no gains.”

The final exam bell rang as I sat in my usual seat. Sunlight streamed through the windows, lighting up Lily’s pencil box. The words “Honor First, Victory (胜利) Follows” shone like gold. These words had always been our belief. We’d been study partners since high school started, sharing sandwiches and celebrating tests under the old oak tree in the courtyard.
I was busy with my exam when her strawberry-shaped eraser, a gift from me last birthday, which once saw our late-night study, rolled near my math paper. Just one seat away, Lily took a deep breath. Her eyes darted (来回扫视) between the teacher and a folded paper in her grey sweater sleeve. It seemed that the words on the note she prepared beforehand had become unclear. So, Lily tapped my knee with her foot—our silent signal from soccer practices, then pushed another paper with several words toward me. Its edge caught the light, sharp and bright.
Raising my head, I saw Teacher Rivera pacing between desks, her glasses sliding down her nose. Out of nervousness, I felt my mouth dry. My pencil slipped from my sweaty fingers, dropping to the floor. The clock ticked loudly. Twenty minutes left, each second heavier.
The room was silent except for the clock. Telling on (告发) Lily meant losing three years of memories: movie nights, soccer games, and the snowy morning she brought me homework. Staying silent would break our promise of honesty. A fly buzzed against the window, like my thoughts.
I remembered a soccer game in the rain. Lily fell in the mud. “Honor first!” she said, refusing my help as she got up with bleeding elbows. Now her shoe pushed the paper closer. Her eyes begged through her hair.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
With fifteen minutes left I knew I had to make a choice.

After the exam, Lily and I sat in silence under the old oak tree.

With fifteen minutes left, I knew I had to make a choice. I took a deep breath and gently pushed the paper back toward Lily. Her eyes widened in surprise. I gave her a smile and pointed to the words on her pencil box: ”Honor First, Victory Follows.” Lily’s face flushed. She nodded, stepped on the paper and paid no attention to it anymore. Together, we focused on the remaining questions, using our brains instead of notes. The last few minutes were tense, but we felt a new sense of teamwork. When the bell finally rang, we handed in our papers, looking at each other with relief.
After the exam, Lily and I sat in silence under the old oak tree. The sunlight streamed through the leaves, casting shadows on our faces. After what seemed a century, I broke the silence and explained, “We promised to be honest, so...” Lily nodded, tears in her eyes. “I know. I was just so scared of failing.” We hugged tightly, knowing our bond was stronger than any test score. The oak tree’s leaves rustled above us, as if cheering us on. From then on, we studied even harder, facing challenges together with honesty and courage.

Nicknamed (给……起绰号) the Walkie Talkie (对讲机), it’s 160 metres tall and was designed by Uruguayan architect Rafael Vinoly. It has a large viewing deck and sky gardens on the top three floors, which are open to the public.

B. There is evidence to show diet is the key play to avoid dementia.
C. The study was carried out among 60,000 people eating nuts every day.
D. It is necessary to do further research because of the limitation of the study.
11. Where is the text probably found?

D California’s Big Trees: Should More Be Grown in California?

(1)续写词数应为150左右;
