Turning soil, pulling weeds, and harvesting cabbage sound like tough work for middle and high school kids. And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts, a school garden program at four low-income schools. The program aims to help students develop science skills, environmental awareness, and healthy lifestyles.
Jaramillo’s students live in neighborhoods where fresh food and green space are not easy to find and fast-food restaurants outnumber grocery stores. “The kids literally come to school with bags of snacks and large bottles of soft drinks,” she says. “They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful.” Though some are scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt at first, most are eager to try something new.
Urban Sprouts’ classes, at two middle schools and two high schools, include hands-on experiments such as soil testing, flower-and-seed dissection, tastings of fresh or dried produce, and work in the garden. Several times a year, students cook the vegetables they grow, and they occasionally make salads for their entire schools.
Program evaluations show that kids eat more vegetables as a result of the classes. “We have students who say they went home and talked to their parents and now they’re eating differently,” Jaramillo says.
She adds that the program’s benefits go beyond nutrition (营养). Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the garden seems to have a calming effect on Jaramillo’s special education students, many of whom have emotional control issues. “They get outside,” she says, “and they feel successful.”
4.What do we know about Abby Jaramillo?
A.She used to be a health worker. B.She grew up in a low-income family.
C.She owns a fast-food restaurant. D.She is a founder of Urban Sprouts.
5.What was a problem facing Jaramillo at the start of the program?
A.The kids’ parents distrusted her. B.Students had little time for her classes.
C.Some kids disliked garden work. D.There was no space for school gardens.
6.Which of the following best describes the impact of the program?
A.Far-reaching. B.Predictable. C.Short-lived. D.Unclear.
7.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Protecting School Gardens B.Experiencing Country Life
C.Growing Vegetable Lovers D.Changing Local Landscape
【答案】4.D 5.C 6.A 7.C
根据第一段中“And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts, a school garden program at four low-income schools.(起初是这样的,Abby Jaramillo说,她和另一位老师在四所低收入学校启动了Urban Sprouts学校花园项目)”可知,Abby Jaramillo是Urban Sprouts的发起者之一,是她创办了Urban Sprouts这个项目。故选D项。
根据第二段中““They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful.” Though some are scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt at first, most are eager to try something new. (“他们来找我们,认为蔬菜很可怕,泥土很可怕,昆虫很可怕。”虽然有些人最初害怕昆虫,对泥土感到厌烦,但大多数人都渴望尝试新的东西)”可知,项目之初很多人怕昆虫,厌烦泥土,由此可推知,一些学生不喜欢园艺工作。故选C项。
6.推理判断题。根据最后一段“She adds that the program’s benefits go beyond nutrition (营养). Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the garden seems to have a calming effect on Jaramillo’s special education students, many of whom have emotional control issues. “They get outside,” she says, “and they feel successful.”(她补充说,该计划的好处不仅仅是营养。有些学生对园艺非常感兴趣,他们把种子带回家开始自己的菜园。此外,在花园里工作似乎对Jaramillo的特殊教育学生有镇静作用,他们中的许多人都有情绪控制问题。“他们走出去,”她说,“他们觉得自己很成功。”)”可知,这个项目不仅给学生提供了有营养的食物,而且许多学生回家开创了自己的菜园,对有情绪控制问题的学生也起到了关键作用,由此可推知,该项目的影响是深远的。故选A项。
根据第一段中“And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts, a school garden program at four low-income schools. The program aims to help students develop science skills, environmental awareness, and healthy lifestyles.(起初是这样的,Abby Jaramillo说,她和另一位老师在四所低收入学校启动了“Urban Sprouts”学校花园项目。该项目旨在帮助学生培养科学技能、环保意识和健康的生活方式)”和最后一段中“She adds that the program’s benefits go beyond nutrition (营养). Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the garden seems to have a calming effect on Jaramillo’s special education students, many of whom have emotional control issues.

The practice of having a significant number of students’ parents as canteen employees in a middle school has not only influenced the daily operation of the canteen but also had a broader impact on the school community.
From the students’ perspective, the change has been well-received. The familiar faces of parents in the canteen create a warm and friendly atmosphere. Students feel more at ease while having meals, and they are more willing to communicate with the canteen staff about their food preferences. This interaction has led to a positive change in the menu, with more dishes being adjusted according to students’ suggestions. For instance, if many students request a certain type of dessert, parent employees will try to learn how to make it and add it to the menu.
For the school, this model has enhanced the transparency of canteen management. Parents, being part of the canteen staff, can directly oversee the entire food production process. They can ensure that the school’s food safety and hygiene regulations are strictly followed. At the same time, they can also provide valuable feedback to the school administration, helping to improve the overall quality of canteen services. This close cooperation between parents and the school has strengthened the trust between the two parties and promoted a more harmonious school-family relationship.
Looking ahead, as this model continues to develop, it has the potential to serve as an example for other schools. By involving parents in canteen operations, schools can not only improve the quality of food services but also build a more inclusive and collaborative educational environment. It shows that when schools and parents work together, great things can be achieved for the benefit of students.
8.Why do students like the new arrangement in the canteen?
A.Because the food is much cheaper.
B.Because they feel more comfortable with parents around.
C.Because there are more types of food to choose from.
D.Because the canteen has a new and modern decoration.
9.How has the school benefited from this model?
A.The school has saved a lot of money on canteen operations.
B.The school has received more donations from parents.
C.The transparency of canteen management has been improved.
D.The school has become more famous in the local area.
10.What does the underlined word “oversee” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.manage B.ignore
C.criticize D.replace
11.What is the author’s attitude towards this model?
A.Doubtful. B.Negative.
C.Indifferent. D.Supportive.
【答案】8.B 9.C 10.A 11.D
根据文章第二段的句子“The familiar faces of parents in the canteen create a warm and friendly atmosphere. Students feel more at ease while having meals, and they are more willing to communicate with the canteen staff about their food preferences.(食堂里熟悉的家长面孔营造出温暖友好的氛围。学生们在用餐时感到更加轻松,并且更愿意与食堂工作人员交流他们的食物偏好。)”可知,学生们喜欢这种新安排是因为他们觉得有家长在周围更舒服。故选B项。
9.细节理解题。根据文章第三段的句子“For the school, this model has enhanced the transparency of canteen management. Parents, being part of the canteen staff, can directly oversee the entire food production process. They can ensure that the school’s food safety and hygiene regulations are strictly followed.(对于学校来说,这种模式提高了食堂管理的透明度。作为食堂员工的家长可以直接监督整个食品生产过程。他们可以确保学校食品安全和卫生规定得到严格执行。)”可知,学校从这种模式中受益,因为食堂管理的透明度得到了提高。故选C项。
10.词句猜测题。根据划线单词上文的“Parents, being part of the canteen staff(父母,作为食堂员工的一部分)”和下文的“the entire food production process. They can ensure that the school’s food safety and hygiene regulations are strictly followed.(整个食品生产过程。他们可以确保学校的食品安全和卫生规定得到严格遵守。)”可知,父母作为食堂员工的一部分肯定可以监督整个食品生产过程,所以划线单词oversee意义为“监督,监管”,与动词manage意义相近。故选A项。
根据文章最后一段的句子“Looking ahead, as this model continues to develop, it has the potential to serve as an example for other schools. By involving parents in canteen operations, schools can not only improve the quality of food services but also build a more inclusive and collaborative educational environment.(展望未来,随着这种模式的不断发展,它有潜力成为其他学校的榜样。通过让家长参与食堂运营,学校不仅可以提高食品服务的质量,还可以建立一个更具包容性和协作性的教育环境。)”可推知,作者对这种模式持支持态度。故选D项。
D
As the awards season approaches, students and teachers will gather to celebrate academic performance, citizenship, leadership and extracurricular (课外的) excellence. Schools bill these awards as a way to recognize students’ achievements. But are they a good idea?
The philosophy behind these awards is to solidify positive behaviors and encourage students to excel. This concept is rooted in behaviourism to education, a psychological theory that suggests external rewards can shape behavior. But such rewards do not necessarily lead to lasting engagement. Once the desire for reward fade, the behavior often doesn’t stick.
Research has also shown awards can sometimes do more harm than good. When students focus on earning an award rather than enjoying the activity, their motivation shifts from internal to external. This means they might participate only for the sake of the award, rather than for the joy of learning or personal growth. A US study of school-aged children found that those who said “I ask questions in class because I want to learn new things” achieved higher academic than those who said “I like school subjects where it’s pretty easy to just learn the answers”.
Beyond affecting motivation, awards can also lead children to grow dependent on external recognition. When kids get used to seeking approval through awards, they may struggle to find self-worth in their own efforts.
For the kids who don’t receive awards, they may feel inadequate or discouraged, especially if the same few children are always celebrated. This situation can create a fixed mindset where kids think their abilities can’t change or progress, as opposed to a growth mindset where students firmly believe they can become better through hard work, good strategies and help from others.
This is not to say schools should never give students awards. For parents and educators, whether kids receive an award or not, there are always alternatives to talk about t their achievements at the end of the school year.
12.What is suggested about the impact of awards in Paragraph 2?
A.Temporary. B.Motivating.
C.Overestimated. D.Transformative.
13.How do awards negatively affect students’ academic performance?
A.They create overconfidence in students.
B.They weaken students’ internal motivation.
C.They mislead students in problem-solving.
D.They discourage students from seeking answers.
14.What distinguishes a growth mindset from a fixed one?
A.Faith in self-improvement.
B.Good academic performance.
C.Preference for external approval.
D.Active classroom engagement.
15.What will probably be discussed in the following paragraphs?
A.Why schools refuse to give up awards.
B.How to encourage kids beyond awards.
C.Why schools seek alternatives to awards.
D.How to teach kids self-worth without awards.
【答案】12.A 13.B 14.A 15.B
根据第二段中“The philosophy behind these awards is to solidify positive behaviors and encourage students to excel.(这些奖项背后的理念是巩固积极的行为,鼓励学生超越)”和“But such rewards do not necessarily lead to lasting engagement. Once the desire for reward fade, the behavior often doesn’t stick.(但这样的奖励并不一定会带来持久的参与。 故选A。
根据第三段中“When students focus on earning an award rather than enjoying the activity, their motivation shifts from internal to external. This means they might participate only for the sake of the award, rather than for the joy of learning or personal growth.(当学生专注于获得奖励而不是享受活动时,他们的动机就会从内部转移到外部。这意味着他们可能只是为了奖励而参加,而不是为了学习或个人成长的乐趣)”可知,奖励可能会让学生更关注外部奖励而非学习本身,导致他们的动机从内部转移到外部,并且意味着他们可能只是为了奖励而参加,而不是为了学习或个人成长的乐趣,也就是说,奖励会削弱学生的内在学习动力。故选B。
14.细节理解题。根据第五段中“This situation can create a fixed mindset where kids think their abilities can’t change or progress, as opposed to a growth mindset where students firmly believe they can become better through hard work, good strategies and help from others.(这种情况会造成一种固定思维,孩子们认为他们的能力不会改变或进步,而不是成长型思维,学生们坚信他们可以通过努力工作,好的策略和他人的帮助变得更好)”可知,固定思维(fixed mindset)的人认为自己的能力是固定的,无法改变,而成长型思维(growth mindset)的人则相信通过努力、策略和帮助可以进步。 故选A。
最后一段中“For parents and educators, whether kids receive an award or not, there are always alternatives to talk about t their achievements at the end of the school year.(对于家长和教育者来说,无论孩子是否获得奖励,在学年结束时总是有其他的选择来谈论他们的成就)”提到,无论孩子是否获得奖励,在学年结束时总是有其他的选择来谈论他们的成就,这表明接下来的内容可能会讨论如何在没有奖励的情况下鼓励孩子。 A. Why schools refuse to give up awards,文章没有暗示学校抗拒放弃奖励;对于选项C. D. How to teach kids self-worth without awards,这里涉及的自我价值,解读前文后可发现,其范围较窄。

University is the place where you’re about to spend what everyone says will be “the best four years of your life”. From studying, partying and being away from old friends and strict parents with their restrictive house rules, to embracing (拥抱) the student title with open arms, it can be a huge change. 16 So how do you get used to that quickly and deal with university life well?
17 When it comes to surviving in a new place by yourself where you don’t have any acquaintances around, make sure you have knowledge of your area. Have a look at the local facilities, such as the doctor’s surgery and the dentist. It’s also very important to know where social areas like cafes, cinemas and so forth are located. 18
Maintain your mental health. Loads of students can struggle with anxiety, depression, and other similar things when they leave home far for the first time. There should be a counselling (咨询) and advice section at your university. 19 Similarly, if you’re stressed about exams, assignments or anything like that, counselling services can help you manage that stress and help you make the best use of your time.
Develop your social life. It’s a lot harder to make friends at university than most people tell you it is. You might often go out for entertainment but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the ones you meet want to hang out with you. 20 Your best bet to make friends is just to continue being nice to everyone.
A.Check out the surrounding area.
B.Take some time out to get to know the campus.
C.And for some people, it can be a massive challenge.
D.The same goes for the people in your halls of residence.
E.It’s well worth paying a visit if you feel down all the time.

“My name is Julie Hanson. I am excited to be back in school. I have two new cats, and you are all invited to see them after school!” Julie said to the 2nd grade class when it was her turn to introduce herself. Julie knew she was outgoing (外向的) and sometimes loud. With her bright red, curly (卷曲) hair and mismatched socks, Julie appeared a little frightening to the shy kids. She couldn’t help it! She loved school, her friends, and being the centre of attention. Julie’s mum said she attracted friends like fruit flies to apple juice.
Mrs. Diaz, the teacher, smiled and thanked Julie for sharing. Mrs. Diaz then introduced a new kid named Andy Collins. When he spoke, he was quiet and didn’t say much. Julie thought she had seen him at breakfast. He had been sitting alone and not eating. Mrs. Diaz then partnered him with Eric as his “buddy” for the day. After class, Julie had forgotten all about Andy. She played four square, swung across the monkey bars twice, and shot a hoop (铁环) that didn’t make the basket. “I love being back at school,” later thought Julie as she took her seat and got ready to work on maths.
At lunchtime, Julie noticed that Andy was sitting with Eric and his friends but not talking to anyone. “He looks lonely, ” thought Julie, as she ate up her pizza, drank her milk, and went outside to play hide-and-seek with a group that was already playing.
When the bell rang to go home for the day, Julie walked up to Mrs. Diaz and gave her a big hug. “Thank you for a great first day! ” Julie said.
“I’ll see you tomorrow! ” Mrs. Diaz told her. She smiled to herself about her outgoing student.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, Julie saw that Andy was by himself at breakfast again. She remembered how lonely he looked yesterday and decided to do something. She took her tray and walked over to Andy. “Hi, Andy! Mind if I sit here?” she asked with a big smile. Andy looked up, a bit surprised, but nodded shyly. Julie started chatting about all the fun things they could do at school, like playing on the playground and doing art projects. Andy listened, a small smile slowly forming on his face. She introduced Andy to her other friends, and they all greeted him warmly.
Julie smiled, feeling good helping Andy make friends. As the days went by, Andy became more and more comfortable in the class. He started participating in games and conversations. Julie was happy to see the change in Andy. One day, Andy even initiated a conversation with some other kids during recess. Julie felt a sense of pride. She realized that a simple act of kindness could make a big difference. From then on, Julie continued to be friendly and inclusive, always looking out for those who seemed lonely. And Andy was no longer the shy, lonely boy.

F.Ask about if there are social groups for you to make friends.
