English is one of the most important subjects in middle
school. Almost everyone knows that we should learn English
well, but few of us know how to learn it well. Mark is my
English friend. He once said, “When one is learning a
foreign language, he must use the foreign language. In this way, he could speak several languages.” As the saying goes, “Practice makes perfect.” When we learn English, we should read more, speak more, listen to English from time to time and practice writing every day. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. Only in this way can we learn it well.

Good morning. I’m a science teacher of the online school.
We teach students aged 11 to 18. In many ways, teaching at
an online school is just like teaching in a normal high school.
Students have to hand in their homework on time. We read and
mark it. The biggest difference is the classroom. It’s a small
room and there’s nobody in it but me. Another difference is
that I give the class in front of the camera. I can’t discover
what the students are doing. So I don’t know if they’re
interested in the lesson. But I can hear them, so I usually ask
them questions during the lesson to make sure they’re listening.

I LOVE CHINESE!
David Brown is a 15-year-old boy from the UK. This
summer he is studying Chinese in a summer camp in Gansu
Province. This is what he told our interviewer.
What do you think of Gansu?
Well, I think it’s fantastic. Summer is the best season to
visit Gansu. I enjoy the pleasant weather a lot. Gansu also has
many pretty views with a long history.

Is there anything else you especially like about it?
Yes, the friendly people and delicious foods.
When we were in Tianshui City 3 days ago, we tried
malatang, a traditional spicy hot pot dish. I like it a lot. Beef
noodles and niangpizi are also my favorites. I haven’t tried
huidouzi. But it seems very tasty.
Where are you staying in Gansu?

I’m staying with some very nice families in different cities
in Gansu. That’s quite helpful for learning Chinese and
experiencing the life and culture here. That’s why I’ve chosen
home-stay.
Do you like learning Chinese?
I enjoy learning Chinese because it is interesting and has a
rich history. Chinese characters are beautiful, and the
language offers many chances. Being able to speak Chinese will
be very helpful in the future. I want to be a Chinese teacher
when I’m older.

As readers, especially those reading in a second language, we need to deal with the text as if we were detectives(侦探) looking for information to unlock the unknown. Like any good detective arriving on the crime scene, the first thing to do when meeting a new and difficult word is to judge the situation, to look at everything that is known and see if it helps us to understand what it means.

As you know, prefixes(前缀) and suffixes(后缀) can be
added to the beginning or end of words to change the meaning.
Know them, and you will have the word building power. But
root words are the key. Take time to learn a few of them, put
them in your memory, and you will become a master word
detective.

Let’s look at one common root word used in English.
“Alter” from the Latin word means “other”. When you
meet this root word, you know that the bigger word has
something to do with “other”. Examine the word
“alternate”. Can you find the Latin root in it?

•If you and your friend like to eat out, first you pay and the

•If you have no alternative, you have no other choices.
Learn as many root words as possible in the language you
are studying. Then use your “rooting for words” skills. Like
any new skill, practice and hard work are always paid back.

Chemistry is usually thought to be more difficult than
other subjects, at least for the beginners. There are some
reasons for this idea. For one thing, chemistry has a very
specialized vocabulary(专业词汇). At first, studying
chemistry is like learning a new language. Also, some
concepts(概念) of chemistry are hard to understand.
However, with hard work and careful study, you can finish
this subject successfully—and even enjoy it. Here are some
suggestions to help you develop good study habits and better
understand the topics in the book:

•Firstly, attend classes on time. Listen to your teacher
and take careful notes in class. If possible, always review the
topics you learn in class, and review your notes on the same
day.
•Secondly, think carefully whether you really understand
the meaning of a term or the use of an equation(方程式). A
good way to test your understanding is to explain a concept to a
classmate or someone else.

•Thirdly, pay attention to things which have something to
do with chemistry in life. Watch or do experiments in class
carefully.
•Fourthly, question often and do not be afraid to ask your teachers or classmates for help.
You will find that chemistry is much more than numbers,
formulas(分子式) and equations. It’s often used in daily life
just like math and physics. Once you fall in love with it, you’ll
get lots of fun.

Studying Alone or Studying with a Group?
Some students like to study alone. Others enjoy studying
with a group.
As for me, I prefer to study with a group.
As the saying goes, “Two heads are better than one.”
With a group, I can learn a lot from others. Whenever I have
some questions, they are always ready to help. With their
help, I become more and more confident in my study. Also,
when I study with my classmates, we can discuss whatever
puzzles me face to face. Through discussion, we can share
different ideas and get to know more about each other.
