Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending(延伸)sometimes deeply into both families. Americans are ready to receive us foreigners at their homes, and share their holidays and their home life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased if we accept their hospitality(好客)easily. Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday life, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous with our time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at airports even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days off to act as guides for our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at home, but truly can not manage a great deal of time to do with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably. For the Americans, it is often considered friendlier to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home! 24. The writer of this passage must be________. A. an American B. a Chinese C. a professor D. a student 25. What does the underlined phrase “ generous with our time ” in Paragraph 3 probably mean ? A. Willing to spend time. B. Serious about time. C. Careful with time. D. Strict with time. 26. When we arrive in America to visit an American friend, we will be________. A. warmly welcomed at the airport B. offered a ride to his home C. treated kindly at his home D. treated to dinner in a restaurant 27. What is the best title for this passage ? A. Friendships between Chinese B. Friendships between Americans C. Americans’ hospitality D. Americans’ and Chinese people’s different views on friendship C One of the greatest sources of unhappiness, in my experience, is the difficulty we have in accepting things as they are. When we see something we don’t like, we wish it could be different. We cry out for something better. That may be human nature, or perhaps it’s something rooted in our culture. The root of the unhappiness isn’t necessarily that we want things to be different. However, it’s that we decided we didn’t like it in the first place. We’ve judged it as bad, rather than saying, “It’s not bad or good, and it just is it.” In one of my books, I said “You should expect people to mess up and expect things to go differently than you planned”. Some readers said it’s too sorrowful to expect things to go wrong. However, it’s only negative if you see it as negative and judge it as bad. Instead, you could accept it as the way the world works and try to understand why that is. This can be applied to whatever you do: how other people act at work, how politics works and how depressing the news media can be. Accept these things as they are, and try to understand why they’re that way. It will save you a lot of sadness, because you’ll no longer say, “Oh. I wish bad things didn’t happen.” Does it mean you can never change things? Not at all. But change things not because you can’t accept things as they are, but because you enjoy the process of changing, learning and growing. Can we make this world a better place? You can say that you’ll continue to try to do things to help others, to grow as a person, to make a difference in this world. That’s the correct path you choose to take, because you enjoy that path. Therefore, when you find yourself judging and wishing for difference, try a different approach: accept and understand. It might lead to some interesting results. 28. The author believes that we feel unhappy maybe because ________. A. it is our natural emotion in the life B. culture asks us to be different from others C. everyone has their own opinions on things D. we dislike something in the beginning 29. Some readers think the words in the author’s book is too ________. A. depressing B. frightening C. encouraging D. unreal 30. In paragraph 4, the underlined word “it” refers to ________. A. acting well at work and in politics B. feeling depressed for the news media C. accepting and understanding what has happened D. saying something negative when bad things come 31. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Expecting things to be different gives us hope. B. Accepting can make our life happier and better. C. Traditional culture becomes the root of unhappiness. D Judging good or bad is important for our world. D The Sequoia National Park in California’s southern Sierra Nevada mountains is best known for the Giant Forest, a collection of 2,000 trees that includes half of the Earth’s largest and longest-living trees. This past weekend, the ancient wonders came dangerously close to being burned by the KNP Complex Fire. But thanks to resourceful firefighters, the precious treasure has been saved. The fire personnel had taken the standard measures of clearing brush and setting controlled fires long before the fire began heading toward the Giant Forest. But they knew more needed to be done. On September 17, 2021, they took the unusual step of covering the base of some of the oldest trees with protective “blankets”. High on the list was General Sherman, the world’s largest tree by volume. The park officials believed the specialized foil (锡纸) would help block some of the heat from the flames and strengthen the natural insulation (隔热) provided by the ancient trees’ thick bark. They were right! On Sunday, September 19, 2021, the officials reported that the extra prevention measures, which also included 24-hour timed sprinklers (洒水装置) on General Sherman and the nearby park buildings, had worked. Jack Owen, a spokesman for the KNP Complex Fire Information Office, said, “There are no trees that have been burned yet, as far as in the Giant Forest. Fire crews are pouring everything they can into it as long as it’s safe. That area is looking good.” Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the rest of the national park. The KNP Complex Fire has burned through 21,777 acres. Meanwhile, the Windy Fire, which started further south on the Sierra slopes on the same night, has burned over 21,598 acres. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and allow firefighters to gain control of the massive fires, which are now beginning to threaten nearby communities. 32. What did the firefighters first do to protect the Giant Forest from fire? A. Identify the features of the complex fire. B. Set up a fire prevention belt around it. C. Put it on the list of protective steps. D. Cover it with specialized foil. 33. Why was the specialized foil applied? A. To keep tree roots from losing water. B. To test the survival ability of the trees. C. To resist some heat from the fire. D. To stop the fire from spreading. 34. What can we infer from paragraph 3? A. General Sherman is relatively safe. B. Fire crews are ready to withdraw. C. Nearby buildings have been abandoned. D. Some trees in the Giant Forest have been cut down. 35. What is the author’s attitude towards the safety of the rest of the national park? A. Unconcerned. B. Optimistic. C. Discouraged. D. Worried. Technology sometimes goes wrong. And the more you use technology, the more you know it can go wrong. He went downstairs in a hurry and started to have his breakfast as quickly as possible. “Why are you in such a hurry, early bird?” Mum asked him. “We will have an English spelling test today, Mum,” Peter said. “Mr. White promised to offer prizes to those who get 100 scores. I’ve been studying the word list since last week. Although the words are difficult, I am well prepared for them.” Peter reviewed the spelling of each word once more carefully when Dad drove him to school. At last, it was time for the students to have a test. “Responsibility,” Mr. White started. Peter wrote it on his test paper quickly and confidently. “The second word: contribution,” Mr. White said. “So easy,” Peter thought. He quickly wrote the word down. Thirty words later, the test papers were collected by Mr. White. “I am to mark your papers now,” he told the class. After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you won a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary got full marks on the spelling test!” Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter’s was an English-Chinese dictionary—the one he liked best. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered. “This is my happiest moment,” Peter thought. After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribusion” confused him. It didn’t seem right. Peter began to compare them after taking out the word list. “C-O-N-T-R-I-B-U-S-I-O-N,” he whispered. He spelled it wrong. “What am I to do?” Peter said to himself. “I expect my classmates to think I’m a master at spelling. If I tell Mr. White one of my spelling words is wrong, I’ll have to give my prize back, or I will become an example for telling a lie.” Staring at the full marks written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him, “We ought to be an honest person.” Paragraph1: Slowly,Peter raised his hand. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph2:  Peter looked around. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 宜宾市四中2023年春期高一期末考试 英语试题 本试卷共8页,满分120分。 What are the speakers talking about? I like to help people and I’m very good at finding things that they might like. M: Who have you helped? W: Let me see... I’ve helped my mother, my aunt, and many of my friends. M: I see. Well, you should know that it is difficult to satisfy our customers. They are busy people who want nice clothes, but they don’t have time to do a lot of shopping themselves. W: That sounds perfect for me. I don’t mind spending my days in stores. I choose things very carefully. M: You should know that our customers have high expectations. You may find working with them quite challenging. W: I’m prepared for that. M: OK. Well, I’ll take your application. We posted the job online as well, so we will probably get a lot of applications. But I will let the boss know that I spoke with you and that you seem to really want the job. W: Thanks. I appreciate that. When will you be doing interviews? M: Well, today is Wednesday... So, I think we’ll start them from tomorrow. If you are chosen for an interview, we’ll call you within a few days. 17. How did the speaker get to Miami? A. By ship. M: Last summer I went to Miami Beach, Florida, where I stayed for two weeks. My friend John and I flew to Miami from New York. It was the first time for both of us to travel by air. We sat near the window of the plane and enjoyed an unusual and beautiful view of the world. The reason why we went to Miami was that the cost was lower than other cities. We stayed at a hotel near the beach. We slept late every morning and then had breakfast outdoors near the pool. When the weather was not too hot, we went sightseeing in the morning. In the afternoon, we would go swimming in the ocean, lie in the sun, or go water-skiing. After dinner in the evening, we usually went dancing or enjoyed ourselves in the cinema. The two weeks went by too quickly. We were both unwilling to leave when we had to. A Peak District, Derbyshire Driving distance from Birmingham: Two hours and 10 minutes With so many places to explore, the Peak District is a dream that will come true for leisure(悠闲的)divers. Friendships between Americans can be close and real , yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. A an American B. a Chinese C. a professor D. a student 25. Americans’ and Chinese people’s different views on friendship 【答案】24. B 25. A 26. C 27. 根据第一段“This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending(延伸)sometimes deeply into both families.(这对我们中国人来说是很难理解的,因为我们之间的友谊花得比较慢,但可能会变成一生的感情,有时会深入到两个家庭。)”和第三段“Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday life, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time.(我们中国人理解美国人的另一个难点是,尽管他们在日常生活中热情地对待我们,但如果这需要大量的时间,他们就不会对我们表现出礼貌。)” 根据划线词前一句“although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country(尽管美国人在他们的日常生活中热情地对待我们,但如果需要花费大量的时间,他们就不会表现出他们的礼貌。这通常与我们国家的做法相反)”可知,在中国,我们可能会慷慨地花时间。由此可以猜测,generous with our time意思为“在时间上很慷慨,愿意付出很多时间”。故选A。 根据第三段“The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at home, but truly can not manage a great deal of time to do with a visitor outside their daily routine. (然而,美国人通常是在家里表示欢迎,但在日常生活之外确实抽不出大量时间来接待客人。)”和“Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably. (一旦我们到达他们家,欢迎将是充分的,热情和真实的。我们会受到热情款待。)”可知,当我们到美国去拜访一位美国朋友时,我们会在他家受到亲切的接待。故选C。 【27题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,特别根据第一段“This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending(延伸)sometimes deeply into both families.(这对我们中国人来说是很难理解的,因为我们之间的友谊花得比较慢,但可能会变成一生的感情,有时会深入到两个家庭。)”和第三段“Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday life, they don’t show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time.(我们中国人理解美国人的另一个难点是,尽管他们在日常生活中热情地对待我们,但如果这需要大量的时间,他们就不会对我们表现出礼貌。)” 文章标题应为“Americans’ and Chinese people’s different views on friendship(美国人和中国人对友谊的不同观点)”。故选D。 C One of the greatest sources of unhappiness, in my experience, is the difficulty we have in accepting things as they are. D. Judging good or bad is important for our world. D 29. A 30. C 31. 根据第二段“The root of the unhappiness isn’t necessarily that we want things to be different. However, it’s that we decided we didn’t like it in the first place.(不快乐的根源不一定是我们希望事情有所不同。然而,是我们一开始就决定不喜欢它。)”可知,作者认为人们不快乐的根源是从一开始我们就不喜欢某些东西,不愿意接受它们本来的样子。故选D项。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Some readers said it’s too sorrowful to expect things to go wrong. (一些读者说,期待事情会出错太令人悲伤了。)”可知,一些读者认为作者话太过消沉,悲观。故选A项。 根据第四段“Accept these things as they are, and try to understand why they’re that way. It will save you a lot of sadness, because you’ll no longer say, “Oh. I wish bad things didn’t happen.”(接受这些事情本来的样子,并试着理解为什么会是这样。它会帮你省去很多悲伤,因为你不会再说“哦。我希望坏事没有发生。”)”可知,只有接受事物本身的样子,你才不会感到那么悲伤,可推知此处it指代前面内容,即接受事物本身的样子,并去理解为什么是这样的。故选C项。 【31题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第一段“One of the greatest sources of unhappiness, in my experience, is the difficulty we have in accepting things as they are.(根据我的经验,不快乐的最大来源之一是我们难以接受事物的本来面目。)” 由此可知B选项“Accepting can make our life happier and better.(接受让我们的生活变得更快乐和更好。)” D The Sequoia National Park in California’s southern Sierra Nevada mountains is best known for the Giant Forest, a collection of 2,000 trees that includes half of the Earth’s largest and longest-living trees. D. Worried. B 33. C 34. A 35. 根据第二段“The fire personnel had taken the standard measures of clearing brush and setting controlled fires long before the fire began heading toward the Giant Forest. (早在大火向巨人森林蔓延之前,消防人员就采取了清除灌木丛和控制火势的标准措施。)”可知,消防人员在大火逼近巨杉林之前,采取了清理灌木和设置可控火源的标准措施,这些措施相当于建立了一条防火带。故选B。 【33题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“The park officials believed the specialized foil (锡纸) would help block some of the heat from the flames and strengthen the natural insulation (隔热) provided by the ancient trees’ thick bark. (公园官员认为,这种特殊的锡纸有助于阻挡火焰的部分热量,并加强古树厚树皮提供的自然绝缘。)”可知,使用特殊锡纸是为了阻挡火焰的一些热量,加强古树厚树皮提供的自然隔热效果。故选C。 【34题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“On Sunday, September 19, 2021, the officials reported that the extra prevention measures, which also included 24-hour timed sprinklers (洒水装置) on General Sherman and the nearby park buildings, had worked. (2021年9月19日星期日,官员们报告说,额外的预防措施,包括在谢尔曼将军和附近的公园建筑上设置24小时定时洒水装置,已经奏效。)”以及“There are no trees that have been burned yet, as far as in the Giant Forest. (到目前为止,巨人森林还没有树木被烧毁。)”说明包括对雪曼将军树(General Sherman)采取的额外防护措施起作用了,目前巨杉林里没有树木被烧毁,由此可推断谢尔曼将军树相对安全。故选A。 根据最后一段“Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the rest of the national park. 故选A。 Technology sometimes goes wrong. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1:   Slowly, Peter raised his hand. “Mr. White, I didn’t get full marks on the test. I made a mistake.” He stood up and handed his teacher the dictionary he liked best and his test paper, “I spelled contribution with ’s-i’ instead of ‘t-i’. ”Peter could feel his classmates looking at him with surprise as he walked back to his desk. Mr. White held up Peter’s testpaper. “Class,” he said, “Peter did something even more important than spelling every word correctly on a test.” Mr. White smiled at Peter, “He taught us all a lesson on being honest.” Paragraph 2:   Peter looked around. He found many of his classmates were smiling at him. “Peter, I want you to have this dictionary because you set a good example for all of us,” Mr. White said. Peter took the dictionary from his teacher and expressed his thanks to Mr. White. Meanwhile, he couldn’t wait to show it to Mum and tell her one of his best days ever. 词汇激活 行为类 递给:hand/pass on 表达:express/extend 拥有:have /possess 情绪类 惊讶:with surprise /surprisedly 最好:best/greatest 【点睛】[高分句型1] Peter could feel his classmates looking at him with surprise as he walked back to his desk.
