We decided that the arc rights estimate is too expensive, didn't we? And although the one from Jackson builders is the cheapest, I don't really trust them to do a good job. I think you're right there. They didn't fill me with confidence. So that leaves us with value builders and presidents. Personally, I think that presence are more professional and will probably do the best job. They just seem to talk a lot of sense about what was needed, but their estimate is one thousand pounds more than valley builders. I'm not sure they are worth that much more. I think you're right. We should go for value builders. There are a good company and lots of our neighbors or have had to work done by them. I haven't heard any complaints. Do you want to send them an email and ask if they can start as soon as possible? Yes, i'll do that now. I've just got the last estimate for fixing the roof of the house. Scientists at university college london used memory influenced tests on the same group of people's six years apart. They found that the memory of those who watched more than three hours a day declined by an average of eight to ten percent. The research team believes that watching television may be putting additional stress on the mind, which contributes to memory decline. Older people who watch more television are also less likely to participate in activities, and those activities are usually known to preserve a mental function, such as reading, using the internet or playing video games. The researchers say that television viewing may also be a risk factor for alzheimer's, but more research is needed to confirm this link. While watching a television may have educational and relaxation benefits, the researchers advise that adults over the age of fifty should try to baLance television viewing with other activities. If you are concerned that the amount of television you are watching could have a negative impact on your health, you should control the amount of T, V watching each day and take up some healthy hobbies instead. For Western designers, China and its rich culture have long been an inspiration for Western creative.
“It’s no secret that China has always been a source(来源) of inspiration for designers,” says Amanda Hill, chief creative officer at A+E Networks, a global media company and home to some of the biggest fashion(时尚) shows.
Earlier this year, the China Through A Looking Glass exhibition in New York exhibited 140 pieces of China-inspired fashionable clothing alongside Chinese works of art, with the aim of exploring the influence of Chinese aesthetics(美学) on Western fashion and how China has fueled the fashionable imagination for centuries. The exhibition had record attendance, showing that there is huge interest in Chinese influences.
“China is impossible to overlook,” says Hill. “Chinese models are the faces of beauty and fashion campaigns that sell dreams to women all over the world, which means Chinese women are not just consumers of fashion — they are central to its movement.” Of course, not only are today’s top Western designers being influenced by China—some of the best designers of contemporary fashion are themselves Chinese. “Vera Wang, Alexander Wang, Jason Wu are taking on Galliano, Albaz, Marc Jacobs—and beating them hands down in design and sales,” adds Hill.
For Hill, it is impossible not to talk about China as the leading player when discussing fashion. “The most famous designers are Chinese, so are the models, and so are the consumers,” she says. “China is no longer just another market; in many senses it has become the market. If you talk about fashion today, you are talking about China—its influences, its direction, its breathtaking clothes, and how young designers and models are finally acknowledging that in many ways.”
24. What can we learn about the exhibition in New York?
A. It promoted the sales of artworks. B. It attracted a large number of visitors.
C. It showed ancient Chinese clothes. D. It aimed to introduce Chinese models.
25. What does Hill say about Chinese women?
A. They are setting the fashion. B. They start many fashion campaigns.
C. They admire super models. D. They do business all over the world.
26. What do the underlined words “taking on” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. learning from B. looking down on C. working with D. competing against
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Young Models Selling Dreams to the World
B. A Chinese Art Exhibition Held in New York
C. Differences Between Eastern and Western Aesthetics
D. Chinese Culture Fueling International Fashion Trends
B 25. A 26. D 27. D
The exhibition had record attendance, showing that there is huge interest in Chinese influences.
根据第四段中Hill所说的话“Chinese models are the faces of beauty and fashion campaigns that sell dreams to women all over the world, which means Chinese women are not just consumers of fashion — they are central to its movement.”(中国模特是向世界各地的女性推销梦想的美丽和时尚运动的面孔,这意味着中国女性不仅仅是时尚的消费者——她们是这场运动的核心。)
根据下文and beating them hands down in design and sales说在设计和销售上击败他们,由此推断出上文Vera Wang, Alexander Wang, Jason Wu are taking on Galliano, Albaz, Mare Jacobs的意思是Vera Wang、Alexander Wang和Jason Wu正在与Galliano、Albaz和 Mare Jacobs竞争。
C
Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river. People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River. Over 300 years its population grew gradually from 800 people to 8 million. But not all cities develop slowly over a long period of time. Boom towns grow from nothing almost overnight. In 1896, Dawson, Canada, was unmapped wilderness(荒野). But gold was discovered there in 1897, and two years later, it was one of the largest cities in the West, with a population of 30,000.
Dawson did not have any of the natural conveniences of cities like London or Paris. People went there for gold. They travelled over snow-covered mountains and sailed hundreds of miles up icy rivers. The path to Dawson was covered with thirty feet of wet snow that could fall without warming. An avalanche(雪崩) once closed the path, killing 63 people. For many who made it to Dawson, however, the rewards were worth the difficult trip. Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives.
But no matter how rich they were, Dawson was never comfortable. Necessities like food and wood were very expensive. But soon, the gold that Dawson depended on had all been found. The city was crowded with disappointed people with no interest in settling down, and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come. Today, people still come and go — to see where the Canadian gold rush happened. Tourism is now the chief industry of Dawson City — its present population is 762.
28. What attracted the early settlers to New York City?
A. Its business culture.
B. Its small population.
C. Its geographical position.
D. Its favourable climate.
29. What do we know about those who first dug for gold in Dawson?
A. Two-thirds of them stayed there.
B. One out of five people got rich.
C. Almost everyone gave up.
D. Half of them died.
30. What was the main reason for many people to leave Dawson?

Cities usually have a good reason for being where they are, like a nearby port or river. People settle in these places because they are easy to get to and naturally suited to communications and trade. New York City, for example, is near a large harbour at the mouth of the Hudson River.
Of the first 20,000 people who dug for gold, 4,000 got rich. About 100 of these stayed rich men for the rest of their lives.
根据文章最后一段中and when they heard there were new gold discoveries in Alaska, they left Dawson City as quickly as they had come.
故A正确。
D
From the moment you open your eyes in the morning, you can feel sweat (汗水)running down your body, even if you’re barely moving at all. That’s what most people in China felt like this summer. In fact, the entire northern hemisphere(半球 )saw high temperatures in July. The Arctic Circle(北极圈) was no exception(例外). Temperatures in the city of Norilsk, which is in the Arctic Circle, reached a record high of 32 ℃, The Atlantic reported. Temperatures there are usually just 10 ℃ at this time of the year.
The heat wave in the Arctic is mainly a long-term result of global warming, according to the Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences. In fact, while the whole world is getting warmer, the Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet. This is called the polar amplification effect(极地放大效应).
The most direct impact(影响) of Arctic warming is the melting of Arctic ice. According to NASA, Arctic sea ice is now disappearing at a rate of 13. 2 percent every 10 years. NASA said that if this continues, the Arctic will have no ice by the year 2040. This has put some Arctic animals, like polar bears, in danger. The ice that the bears live on has shrunk(缩小), the Toronto Star reported.
Melting ice can also cause sea levels to rise in the long term. Since 1993 sea levels have risen at a rate of 3. 2 cm every 10 years, the Guardian reported. Some countries, such as Tuvalu(图瓦卢) in the South Pacific Ocean and Maldives(马尔代夫) in the Indian Ocean, are at risk of disappearing into the sea.
32. Which of the following is true?
A. Some countries in the ocean will disappear in 10 years.
B. China is the hottest in the northern hemisphere this summer.
C. The temperatures in Norilsk used to be lower than this summer.
D. The world gets warmer because of the heat wave in the Arctic.
33. What does the underlined word “this” in the third paragraph refer to?
A. The heat wave in the Arctic.
B. The result of global warming.
C. Getting warmer in the world.
D. The Arctic getting warm faster.
34. What may be the result of the melting of Arctic ice?
A. The polar will become dangerous.
B. Sea levels rise in the long term.
C. There will be an end of water shortage.
D. There will be no ice in the world by 2040.
35. What is the main idea of this passage?
A. Heat hits Arctic.
B. Arctic animals are in danger.
C. The world became hotter than before.
D. Some countries may disappear into the sea.
C 33. D 34. B 35. A
根据第一段“Temperatures in the city of Norilsk, which is in the Arctic Circle, reached a record high of 32 ℃, The Atlantic reported. Temperatures there are usually just 10 ℃ at this time of the year.” 结合选项,C项Norilsk的气温曾经低于今年夏天,符合原文文意,C项正确;A项一些海洋国家将在10年内消失,与文中“such as Tuvalu(图瓦卢) in the South Pacific Ocean and Maldives(马尔代夫) in the Indian Ocean, are at risk of disappearing into the sea.”
根据第二段中“In fact, while the whole world is getting warmer, the Arctic is warming twice as fast as the rest of the planet. This is called the polar amplification effect. ”事实上,当整个世界变暖的时候,北极的变暖速度是地球其他地方的两倍。这就是所谓的极地放大效应。同时紧接着由第三段“The most direct impact(影响) of Arctic warming is the melting of Arctic ice. According to NASA, Arctic sea ice is now disappearing at a rate of 13. 2 percent every 10 years. NASA said that if this continues, the Arctic will have no ice by the year 2040.”
根据最后一段第一句“Melting ice can also cause sea levels to rise in the long term. ”可知,北极冰层融化的结果从长远来看,也可能使海平面上升。结合选项,A项极地会变得危险;B项长期会导致海平面上升;C项水资源短缺会终结;D项2040年前世界上会没有冰,只有B项有可能是北极冰层融化带来的结果,符合题意,故选B项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段第一句“The heat wave in the Arctic is mainly a long-term result of global warming, ”和第三段第一句“The most direct impact of Arctic warming is the melting of Arctic ice.
如第1小题,根据第一段“Temperatures in the city of Norilsk, which is in the Arctic Circle, reached a record high of 32 ℃, The Atlantic reported.
Do you feel like there are too many things to do in a day, but not enough time to do them? If so, you’re experiencing what researchers call time poverty.

Some people even take great pride in how busy they are because it’s become a status symbol. ____37____. Fortunately, here are specific steps we can take to feel more time affluent (富足) and more socially connected.
If you want a satisfying social life, buy time for it. You might pay to have a disliked housework done by others, get a direct flight instead of a cheaper one with a stopover, or pay extra to drive the fastest route home. ____38____, like calling a friend or hanging out with your kids.
Another way to get more time is to give it away. In one study, researchers asked people to devote part of their Saturday morning to doing something for themselves that they weren’t already planning to do or doing something for someone else. The people who gave away their time later felt like they had more of it. ____39____.
If you have too many things to do and not enough time to do them, try to cut back on some things. ____40____. You can probably choose to slow down a little and make more time for casual chats with co-workers and unplanned get-togethers with friends.

B. Helping others expands our sense of time
C. Buying time is a good way to free you from the boredom of repeated tasks
D. The choices we make with our time greatly affect our happiness and social lives
E. Then invest your free time in something socially engaging
F. You don’t have to keep up with the pace of the modern world

根据上文“Do you feel like there are too many things to do in a day, but not enough time to do them? If so, you’re experiencing what researchers call time poverty.(你是否觉得一天中有太多的事情要做,但却没有足够的时间去做?如果是这样,你正经历着研究人员所说的“时间贫困”。)”可知,空处应该和“时间贫困”这一主题相关。A项:Time poverty is a sign of the times.(时间贫困是时代的一个标志。) 故选A。
根据上文“Some people even take great pride in how busy they are because it’s become a status symbol.(有些人甚至为自己有多忙而自豪,因为这已经成为一种地位的象征。)”和下文“Fortunately, here are specific steps we can take to feel more time affluent (富足的) and more socially connected.(幸运的是,这里有一些具体的步骤可以让我们感到时间更充裕,社会联系更紧密。)” Yet, feeling short on time is associated with lower level of happiness and connection.(然而,感觉时间紧迫与较低的幸福感和联系水平有关。)
根据下文“like calling a friend or hanging out with your kids.(比如打电话给朋友或和孩子出去玩。)” Then invest your free time in something socially engaging.(然后把你的空闲时间投入到社交活动中去。)
根据上文“In one study, researchers asked people to devote part of their Saturday morning to doing something for themselves that they weren’t already planning to do or doing something for someone else. The people who gave away their time later felt like they had more of it.(在一项研究中,研究人员要求人们在周六早上抽出一部分时间为自己做一些他们还没有计划做的事情,或者为别人做一些事情。那些付出时间的人后来会觉得他们拥有更多的时间。)”可知,空处承接上文,说明帮助别人可以扩展自己的时间观念。B项中的“expands our sense of time”和上文的“had more of it”对应。B项:Helping others expands our sense of time.(帮助别人扩展了我们的时间观念。)
根据上文“If you have too many things to do and not enough time to do them, try to cut back on some things.(如果你有太多的事情要做,而没有足够的时间去做,试着减少一些事情。)”和下文“You can probably choose to slow down a little and make more time for casual chats with co-workers and unplanned get-togethers with friends.(你可以选择慢下来一点,多花点时间和同事闲聊,或者和朋友在没有计划的情况下聚会。)” You don’t have to keep up with the pace of the modern world.(你不必紧跟现代社会的步伐。)

She ran a small shop at a flea market and collected old clothes and some other things to sell for the money we needed.Once during elementary school, it was field day, and my mom came.I was so embarrassed and wondered how she could do this to me? I threw her a hateful look and ran out.The next day at school, my schoolmates asked me,"Your mom has only one eye? !"and laughed at me.
I was so angry with my mom and wished that she would just disappear from this world. So I said to my mom, "Why don't you have the other eye? You’re only gonna make me a joke! "My mom trembled with shock, and said in an apologetic tone, "I’m sorry that I have only one eye, and I was an embarrassment for you.But I was so proud of my son to see a whole new world for me with that eye.I will leave right now.Sorry! "My mom turned around staggered away.
For the words I had said to her earlier, there was something biting at me in the corner of my heart.Even so, I hated my one-eyed mom and our desperate poverty.Maybe because my mom hadn't punished me, I didn't think I had hurt her feelings very badly.
I told myself that I would become successful in the near future, so I studied very hard.Later I got accepted by the Seoul University.I left my mother and came to Seoul to study.I never went back to visit my mom.
Then I got married there.I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too.I was living happily as a successful man.I enjoyed the life in Seoul because it was a place that didn't remind me of my mom and my past. This kind of happiness was getting bigger and bigger, until one day someone knocked at my door.
注意:1)所续写短文的词数应为150左右;2)续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;
Paragraph 1: It was my mom! And still with her one eye!
Paragraph 2: Holding the letter, I cried for the person who only lived for me.
It was my mom!And still with her one eye! Reminded instantly of my dark past and embarrassment , I felt as if the whole sky were falling apart on me. Being mad with anger, I shouted at her,”Who are you? How dare you come to my house!” My mom narrowed her eye and opened her mouth but nothing came out there. Dead silence! Tears streaming down the gloomy winkled face, she threw a letter into my hand, turned around and ran away, head deep down. Heart stung by her withered back, I just glanced at the letter. My mom gave that eye to me! My world fell apart.
Holding the letter, I cried for the person who only lived for me. How she wanted her own son to see the world clearly! But how deeply I had hurt her! Heart beat with deep regret, I called out loudly,”Mom!” I ran after my mom, grabbed her and knelt down. “Mom, would you forgive me and accept me again?” Tears dried and a smile stole into her cheeks. It’s never too old-fashioned to say Mom’s love is the greatest in the world.

25 What does Hill say about Chinese women?
A. They are setting the fashion. B. They start many fashion campaigns.
C. They admire super models. D. They do business all over the world.
26. What do the underlined words “taking on” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. learning from B. looking down on C. working with D. competing against
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Young Models Selling Dreams to the World
B. A Chinese Art Exhibition Held in New York
C. Differences Between Eastern and Western Aesthetics
D. Chinese Culture Fueling International Fashion Trends

A. They found the city too crowded.
B. They wanted to try their luck elsewhere.
C. They were unable to stand the winter.
D. They were short of food.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. The rise and fall of a city.
B. The gold rush in Canada.
C. Journeys into the wilderness.
D. Tourism in Dawson.

Since 1993, sea levels have risen at a rate of 3. 2 cm every 10 years, the Guardian reported.
