“Tree Hole Pocket”: A sisterly officer’s listening project
In the quiet corners of schoolyards in Chongqing’s Bishan District, students came up to a man-made tree and slipped the letters they had written into a hole in it.
This gentle project, known as the “Tree Hole Pocket”, was started in 2021 by Zhang Yaoyuan, a community police officer, when she took charge of legal education at a local middle school. While interacting with the students, she noticed some students were in low spirits and unwilling to open up.
In search of a solution, Zhang came across an article on a “tree hole” where people could express their feelings. Greatly inspired, she created the first Tree Hole Pocket at her school. At first, only a few students responded. To build trust, Zhang organized various interactive activities to grow closer to the students emotionally. Gradually, students let down their guard and began to share what had been weighing on their minds with this Sister Tree Hole. The number of notes and letters in the Tree Hole Pocket steadily increased — from just two or three a week to dozens and even hundreds later on. Each week, Zhang read and categorized the letters, working tirelessly to ensure that each concern received the suitable support.
“With this tree, I can spell out my troubles without holding back. When someone replies, I feel heard and understood,” one student said.
In 2023, with the support from local authorities, the Tree Hole Pocket Studio was established to expand the project. With more people joining in, the name Sister Tree Hole came to represent a whole team. As of now, the project has covered nearly 60 schools in the district, together with psychological counseling rooms established to further support students’ well-being. What began as a single tree has gradually grown into a forest of connection — where children speak, and someone truly listens.

Guizhou Long March Culture Digital Art Museum
follows the idea of the “Red Ribbon on the Earth”
The Long March Culture Digital Art Museum is an immersive digital art space in Guizhou Province, China. Covering 53,000 square meters, the museum offers a modern retelling of the historical Long March, where architecture connects with performance art. Referred to as “The Red Ribbon,” the museum houses six themed performance areas and introduces advanced technology to tell the story.
The architectural design of the Long March Culture Digital Art Museum follows the “Red Ribbon on the Earth” idea. The site’s natural altitude hides the enormous size of the building under two striking red ribbons, representing the significance of the Long March.
It includes the Star and Fire Plaza: the immersive entrance area is surrounded by towering walls, with a great star-shaped torch at its center. Visitors begin their journey here, moving from a narrow, quiet walkway into a powerful open space. Using innovative digital methods and a range of advanced materials, the red ribbons appear to change color with natural light, thus creating an ever-changing atmosphere.
Inside, the museum’s digital performance spaces, including mechanical theaters and touch-screen cinemas, present the story of the Long March to audiences in ways that are both new and appealing.

Exhibiting living heritage in China
Immerse oneself in the magic of a legendary story or watch an opera performed on a traditional stage? Such experiences are now within the reach of the general public at the 35,000-square-meter Zhejiang Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum. Since 2004, the museum has focused on effectively presenting intangible cultural heritage, understanding that it cannot be fully represented through artifacts alone.
Atraditional opera stage, constructed by 20 highly skilled craftsmen, is the centerpiece of the Traditional Theater Hall. The stage includes two doors, ensuring the performers follow the established rules of traditional performances such as “chujiangruxiang”.The stage itself becomes a living testament to the rich heritage of Chinese performing arts.
The museum’s design team spent two years tracking and documenting over 500 people who practice intangible traditions. Their hands, weathered and worn by years of commitment, tell a story of passion and craftsmanship. The museum uses cutting-edge digital imaging to present this“intangibility”in a tangible form, creating a wall of images featuring hundreds of skilled hands in motion. As visitors move through the display, they can observe the detailed crafting process in real time by selecting any image of a particular“hand item”that interests them.
Legendary stories are a crucial oral tradition of intangible cultural heritage, passed down through generations. Here at the museum, they are creatively digitized to entertain audiences and deepen their understanding of this heritage. The museum vividly presents two famous legends,“The Legend of the White Snake” and“The Butterfly Lovers”,by extracting symbolic cultural elements and designing them into an immersive animation space. As visitors step into these virtual worlds, they are enveloped in flowing colors and soundscapes.
As China’s first regional comprehensive museum of its kind, it sets the stage for similar venues in the future. The future of museums in China is shaped by the “Museum+”model, partnering with industries like digital media, education, and tourism to preserve traditions and integrate with the city, community, and modern life as well.

Recently, the Public Security Bureau of Bishan District, Chongqing, launched a legal education campaign (活动) in local schools. The activity, called “Bringing Legal Education into the Classroom,” aims to promote legal knowledge and build a safer school environment.
During the classes, police officers used real-life cases to introduce topics such as school bullying and online fraud (诈骗). Through role-play and group discussions, students were encouraged to think about how to deal with these problems. Officers also handed out information booklets (小册子) and played short videos to help students learn to respect others and protect themselves.
This campaign helped students better understand the law and improve their ability to stay safe, laying a solid foundation (坚实的基础) for creating peaceful campuses. In the future, the police in Bishan District will continue bringing legal education to schools to support the healthy growth of students.
