I still remember the days when I was a youthful student in an engineering school. I lived a casual life, without caring about the future. I smoked, drank with friends and made girl friends. Little did I realize that casualness would certainly lead to loss.
Two years had passed and I was staring down a report card that highlighted (使……突出) FAIL in more than half the subjects. I didn’t care, at least not till my dad found out about it. You see, I studied in India and unlike the United States where the students are expected to finance their own education, my dad financed me.
Then came the day when my dad found out my habit of smoking. He got very angry but he just told me, “Son, your allowance is cut in half from this moment on.” It hit me like a roundhouse kick from Bruce Lee. I was jolted (震摇) of my bones! I didn’t know how to pay off the debts that I had accumulated in college. I owed everybody money: the grocery store, the bars, the restaurants, my friends, etc. I was living a life filled with credit.
When I went back to college, I knew that if I don’t change the way I live my life I won’t be able to pay everybody off. So I decided to make some changes, big changes. I quit smoking, cut off from my friends who led me down the wrong road, starting hanging out in libraries and reading my engineering books.
One year later, I went from a miserable failure to a magna cum laude Life was never the same again. This incident made me know that anything is possible if you take action and do something about it, however small or large. Even today it still motivates me when I feel that I’m about to lose or give up. It reminds me that I can do it!

In the spring of 2012, Premont Independent School District in Premont, Texas, was in trouble. The state had threatened to shut it down for financial problems and academic failures. To cut costs, the district had moved the middle school to the high school building; the elementary school hadn’t had a music teacher in years; and the high school had sealed off the science labs. Yet they still had football, basketball, volleyball, track, tennis, cheerleading, and baseball teams.
So superintendent (监管人) Emest Singleton made a big decision: He canceled sports. By canceling sports, the district could save $150,000 in one year.
In many schools, sports are so popular that no one realizes their actual cost. New bleachers (露天看台) can cost half a million dollars. Maintaining a grass field can cost more than $20,000 a year. Schools also need to pay for various costs for the team, the band, and the cheerleaders. For home games, schools often pay for security, painting the lines on the field, and cleaning up.
Distraction, however, may be the greatest cost of all. During football season in particular, focus shifts away from learning. Players spend long hours practicing to late-night.
Fall of 2012 at Premont was extremely quiet. There were no Friday night games to look forward to, no cheerleaders making posters in the hallway.
But this quiet had an advantage. That first semester,80 percent of students passed their classes, compared with 50 percent the previous fall. About 160 people attended parent-teacher night, compared with six the year before.
Today, Premont has no debt, and the district will stay open. The science labs have even been repaired. This past spring, Premont brought back baseball, track, and tennis, but in a limited way.
The district has a lot of work to do before its students can feel the kind of pride in their academics that they once felt in their sports teams. But students have proved their ability to adapt.
Will more schools follow Premont’s lead?
They should.

Many people confuse hard-working people with workaholics (工作狂). What are some characteristics of workaholics? How could a person tell that he/ she is a workaholic? A workaholic works long hours, at the expense of personal relationships and health. When not working, they’ re thinking about work. Work influences their mood: When work is going well, they’ re up; when work is going less well, they’ re down.
Working, or simply being busy, can be a hard habit to break. When workaholics aren’t busy working — or doing something to promote their work — they feel anxious and guilty.
There is a link between health problems and workaholism. Just because work itself is a respectable pursuit (追求) doesn’t mean that an addiction to it is any less damaging than other sorts of addictions. A number of studies show that workaholism has been associated with a wide range of health problems, such as anxiety and heart disease
Besides health problems, being a workaholic brings other negative effects as well. A study found that working too much negatively influenced an employee’s marriage. This isn’t surprising, since if you’re married to your work it can be difficult to be married to anything, or anyone, else. There have also been studies looking at the influence of workaholic parents on their children and the news isn’t good. Adult children of workaholic fathers experienced more depression and anxiety and a weaker sense of self.
However, there are also many positive aspects to working hard and to an increasing devotion to career. Hard work can bring great rewards. For many, it’s how they develop feelings of self worth and confidence and purpose. If you have a workaholic in your life you might point out the things he or she is missing out on while at work, whether it’s a child’s soccer game, a good book, or a yoga class. Seek to understand why the person feels the need to work so much and support them in finding a resolution.
51. What can we learn from the text?
A. Work has stronger effects on workaholics than on others.
B. Hard-working people enjoy bester health than other people do.
C. Workaholics work to build better relationships.
D. Workaholics care more about their hdalth than others do.
52. When workaholics are not busy working, they ________.
A. promote their work
B. form a bad habit easily
C. feel uneasy and insecure
D. have a chance to prove their own value
53. What are Paragraphs 3 and 4 mainly about?
A. Bad influences of workaholism.
B. Different patterns of workaholics.
C. How people deal with their addictions.
D. How hard-working people differ from workaholics.
54. What is the author’s attitude towards working hard?
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Negative. D. Curious.
55. What can we do to help a workaholic in life?
A. Force him to join family activities.
B. Reward him for his hard work.
C. Help him find self worth and confidence.
D. Try to be understanding and supporting.

I remember him on his first day in the sixth grade. He was the only black face in a sea of white. A few days later, he had yet to connect with anyone. Our teacher asked me to talk to him. So I went over to him and said, “Hi.” He replied, “Hi.” And that was it for day one. The next day, “What’s up?” “Not much.” We added a word or two each day until full sentences were formed, and then a paragraph.
Soon we became good friends and our friendship survived new friendships and small arguments. One day, with nothing better to do, we played jokes on each other. When it was my turn, I expressed criticism of his choice of clothing. He was laughing as hard as I was. Strangely enough,I remember so much about that day except in what context (语境) the N-word (rude word for a black person) was used. My purposes were not to wound him obviously. He was my best friend. But the look on his face told me otherwise.
It was a few days before we spoke again. Although we insisted we’d be friends forever, I never saw him after high school. It may not have had anything to do with what I said, or it may have had everything. By that point, we weren’t intimate enough for me to ask any more.
Several days ago, there was a near race riot (暴动) during a high school basketball game, and angry teenagers shouted several rude words. These words brought back a flood of memories. All I wonder is if these kids will ever feel as bad as I did for using such a rude word. It’s a curse (诅咒) word, but the real curse is on the person who uses it.
56. What does the first paragraph talk about? (no more than 10 words)
__________________________________________________________________________
57. What happened to the author’s friend according to Paragraph 2? (no more than 10 words)
__________________________________________________________________________
58. What does the underlined word “intimate” in Paragraph 3 probably mean in English? (1 word)
___________________________________________________________________________
59. What reminded the author of his unpleasant memories? (no more than 10 words)
___________________________________________________________________________
60. What can we learn from the story between the author and his friend? (no more than 20 words)
___________________________________________________________________________
56. How the author got to know his friend.
57. His friend was badly hurt by the author’s words.
58. Close./ Familiar.
59. Several rude words said by the angry teenagers.
60. We should be careful with our words to avoid hurting others.
根据第一段“I remember him on his first day in the sixth grade. He was the only black face in a sea of white. A few days later, he had yet to connect with anyone. Our teacher asked me to talk to him. So I went over to him and said, “Hi.” He replied, “Hi.” And that was it for day one. The next day, “What’s up?” “Not much.” We added a word or two each day until full sentences were formed, and then a paragraph.(我还记得他上六年级的第一天。在一片白人面孔中,他是唯一的黑人孩子。几天后,他仍未和任何人建立起联系。老师让我去跟他聊聊。于是我走到他面前,说了声“嗨”。他回了句“嗨”。第一天的交流就只有这些。第二天,我问“还好吗?”他答“还行。”我们每天都比前一天多聊一两个词,直到能说完整的句子,后来甚至能聊上一段话。)”可知,第一段主要讲述作者是如何认识他的朋友的。故答案为How the author got to know his friend.
根据第二段中的“Strangely enough, I remember so much about that day except in what context (语境) the N-word (rude word for a black person) was used. My purposes were not to wound him obviously. He was my best friend. But the look on his face told me otherwise. (说来也怪,那天的很多细节我都记得清清楚楚,唯独想不起那个 N 字(对黑人的侮辱性称呼)是在什么语境下说出口的。显然,我并非有意要伤害他 —— 他是我最好的朋友。但他脸上的神情却告诉我,情况并非如此。)”可知,作者说了对黑人侮辱性的话语,由此可知,作者的朋友被作者的话深深伤害了。故答案为His friend was badly hurt by the author’s words.
根据第三段“Although we insisted we’d be friends forever, I never saw him after high school. It may not have had anything to do with what I said, or it may have had everything. By that point, we weren’t intimate enough for me to ask any more. (尽管我们曾坚称会永远是朋友,但高中毕业后我就再也没见过他了。这或许与我当初说的话毫无关系,又或许完全是因为那句话。到了那个时候,我们的关系已经没那么……了,我再也没机会问个究竟。)”可知,作者在高中毕业后再也没有见过他,不知道是不是因为当初所说的那句话,此时已没有机会问个究竟,由此可知,此处表示两个人的关系不够“亲密”了,所以,“intimate”的意思与“亲密的”意义相近。故答案为Close./ Familiar.
根据第四段“Several days ago, there was a near race riot during a high school basketball game, and angry teenagers shouted several rude words. These words brought back a flood of memories. (几天前,一场高中篮球赛中差点发生种族暴动,愤怒的青少年们喊出了一些粗鲁的话。这些话勾起了我一连串的回忆。)”可知,愤怒青少年喊的粗鲁话语让作者想起了不愉快的回忆。故答案为Several rude words said by the angry teenagers.
We should be careful with our words to avoid hurting others.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Future
Recently our class had a heated discussion about the future of artificial intelligence (AI). The results are as follows:
Some students are in favor that AI has some advantages over human beings on some jobs which require less creativity. For example, AI is already doing lots of online and telephone customer service jobs. And jobs like big data analysis can also be replaced by it.
Others think humans still have some qualities that AI can never acquire, including sympathy and feelings. Humans can provide true comfort to others while AI lacks real emotions.
Personally speaking, AI is a kind of technology that can bring us convenience and free humans from repeated and heavy work. We can benefit a lot from its development to enjoy a better life.

For decades, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has played a big role in establishing and securing World Heritage Sites of cultural and natural importance. These are some sites on its World Heritage List.
Churches of the Pskov School of Architecture (Russia)
This group of monuments is located in the historic city of Pskov. The structures, many of which are churches, were all designed by the Pskov School of Architecture. It was a leading school of building design in the country, especially in the 15th and 16th centuries. Some elements common to Pskov architecture date back to the 12th century.
Babylon (Iraq)
The ancient city of Babylon was once a main tourist site before Iraq suffered several wars. The city with a history of more than 4,000 years is where dynasties have risen and fallen since the earliest days of settled human civilization. UNESCO says the site “offers a look into one of the most influential empires of the ancient world”.
Writing-on-Stone (Canada)
Canada’s Writing-on-Stone monument has a large number of protected rock paintings and rock carvings. Some of them are about 2,000 years old. The markings were left by Blackfoot Native Americans, who lived in parts of Western Canada and the far northern United States. The land that makes up Writing-on-Stone is filled with rock posts that have been formed into “spectacular shapes” by erosion (侵蚀).
Paraty and IIha Grande (Brazil)
The historic coastal town of Paraty and the island IIha Grande are already popular places for visitors to Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro state. Paraty was the end-point of the Gold Route, along which gold was shipped to Europe in the 1600s: The area is also the home to a huge number of animals, some of which are in danger now.

Besides health problems being a workaholic brings other negative effects as well.

A. Work has stronger effects on workaholics than on others.
