B My name is Kevin. A year ago, I struggled with self-doubt that held me back from taking chances. I feared failure so much that I avoided trying new things altogether. I often thought, What if I fail? What if I’m not good enough? These thoughts became invisible barriers between me and my potential, making me feel small even before I began. One day, my school organized a talk by mountain climber Eric Dawson. He spoke about his journey of overcoming physical and mental challenges to reach the highest peaks in the world. His words lit a spark in me, making me realize that fear of failure should not stop me from taking action. I decided to approach him after the talk, something I would have never dared before. That small conversation gave me a push I desperately needed. He looked me in the eye and said “The first step is the hardest — but it’s the one that changes everything.” A month later, I signed up for a leadership camp at my school. I hesitated before submitting the application, but remembering Dawson’s words, I decided to give it a try. At the camp, I was encouraged to step out of my comfort zone. I took part in activities that forced me to speak up, work in a team, and make decisions quickly. I even led a group project, something I would’ve run from before. For the first time, I saw myself as someone capable. Looking back, I realize that the only thing holding me back was my own fear. We often wait for the perfect moment, but the truth is, confidence comes from action. not waiting. If we never take the first step, we will always remain stuck in the same place. Taking that step changed everything for me — and it can for anyone. 24. What prevented Kevin from trying new things? A. His physical weakness. B. His lack of experience. C His fear of failure. D. His unwillingness to learn. 25. How did Eric Dawson’s talk change Kevin? A. It taught him how to handle pressure. B. It encouraged him to take the first step. C. It made him more determined to succeed. D. It helped him discover his passion for climbing. 26. What did Kevin do at the leadership camp? A. He worked with Eric Dawson. B. He avoided trying new things. C. He organized a project. D. He stayed in his comfort zone. 27. What lesson did Kevin learn from his experience? A. Failure is not an option. B. Teamwork guarantees success. C. Perfection is possible to achieve. D. Confidence comes from taking action. C In recent years, interest in space tourism has grown rapidly. Once a concept limited to science fiction, space travel for private individuals is now becoming a reality. Companies like SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic are developing commercial spaceflight programs, promising a future where ordinary people can experience life beyond Earth. Wealthy adventurers, celebrities, and even a few researchers have already taken part in these early missions, drawing global attention. However, space tourism raises important questions. Critic argue that it remains an activity for the wealthy, as ticket prices are extremely high. A single trip can cost hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars, making space tourism accessible only to a select few. Others worry about the environmental impact. Rocket launches release large amounts of carbon dioxide and other pollutants into the atmosphere, contributing to climate change. Some scientists fear that an increase in spaceflights could worsen these issues if not properly regulated. Supporters, on the other hand, believe that space tourism has benefits. It drives innovation in aerospace technology, leading to advancements that could make space travel more affordable in the future. Additionally, some believe that seeing Earth from space — often called the “overview effect” — gives travelers a deeper appreciation for the planet and inspires greater environmental responsibility. Documentaries and interviews with early space tourists suggest this emotional shift is genuine and long-lasting. Despite the excitement, space tourism remains in its early stages. While a few commercial flights have successfully taken private passengers to the edge of space, long-term sustainability is still uncertain. The cost must decrease significantly for space travel to become widely accessible. Scientists also emphasize the need for better safety measures, as spaceflight remains a high-risk activity. Some experts compare space tourism to the early days of aviation. A century ago, air travel was expensive and rare, but today, millions of people fly every day. Could the same happen with space travel? Many in the industry believe so, but it may take decades before space tourism becomes a regular part of human life. For now, space tourism remains a thrilling yet controversial topic. While the idea of ordinary people traveling to space is inspiring, questions about cost, safety, and environmental impact must be addressed before it can truly take off. 28. What is one major concern about space tourism? A. It harms the environment. B. It is illegal in many countries. C. It has replaced scientific space missions. D. It distract s public attention from climate issues. 29. Why do some supporters have a positive view of space tourism? A. It is a safe and affordable industry. B. It helps reduce global carbon emissions. C. It could encourage better treatment of Earth. D. It provides a solution to overcrowding on Earth. 30. What does the underlined phrase “overview effect” most likely refer to? A. A feeling of being lost in space. B. A dangerous effect of space travel. C. An ability to see beyond the Earth’s atmosphere. D. A change in perspective after viewing Earth from space. 31 Which would be the best title for the passage? A. Why Space Tourism Will Fail. B. Is Space Travel worth the Cost? C. How Governments Control Space Travel. D. Space Tourism: The Next Step for Humanity? D Why does one plus one equal two? One possible answer is “It just does!” Math can seem like a world of rules you just have to follow, which makes it seem rigid and boring. Whereas my love of math is somewhat driven by my love of breaking rules, or at least pushing against them. Both of those impulses (冲动) play an important role in advancing human understanding, and in particular mathematical understanding. Sometimes, one plus one can equal more than two. If you and your friend each have 1.5 or even 1.9 times the money needed for a cup of coffee, you might have enough to buy three. Or sometimes if one pair of tennis players gets together with another pair, there ends up being more than two pairs. If the first pair are called A and B, and the second pair are called C and D, then we have the following pairs in total: AB, AC, AD, BC, BD, CD. Other times, one plus one is just one. If you mix one color with one color, you get one color. And in some situations, one plus one is zero. If I say “I’m not not hungry,” that means “I’m hungry.” The point here is that one “not” plus one “not” is the same as zero “nots.” Now, you might think that these aren’t really situations in which one plus one equals something else, because they aren’t really addition, or because those aren’t really numbers. You’ re welcome to think that, but that’s not what math does. I often hear parents complaining how pointless this is because if they can do something one way, why do they need to know all these other ways? Imagine we were designing a jungle gym for children. We’d want to test it in every possible way to make sure it’s safe. We wouldn’t test it by just playing on it in sensible ways: We’d want to jump on it, swing from it, fall from it, and try to pull it out of the ground, rather than simply trusting that we built it well. The solidity of math comes from not wanting to trust things, but wanting to jump and swing and know that our framework will hold up. One of the reasons the framework is so strong is precisely because we question it so deeply. I hope that we will start seeing mathematics as a place to pose questions and explore answers, rather than a place where the answers are fixed and we’ re supposed to know them. 32. Which of the following situation best proves that “one plus one equals one”? A. Debate in pairs in a group. B. Share an apple with a friend. C. Use two “nots” in a complete sentence. D. Put a pile of sand on top of another pile. 33. The author uses the example “not not hungry” mainly to _______. A explain how math helps us describe emotions B. question the idea that math rules are fixed and rigid C. compare how logic works in language and mathematics D. argue that language can be more confusing than numbers 34. What is the author’s attitude toward using different math methods? A. It confuses learners who prefer clear rules. B. It allows students to memorize rules faster. C. It builds flexibility and deeper understanding. D. It slow students down but is necessary for exams. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Many people find it difficult to manage their time effectively. One day, she noticed that many shelter animals lacked proper beds and had to sleep on hard, cold floors. She felt that they deserved better. Determined to help, Emma started collecting old blankets and soft fabrics (布料) from her neighborhood. She asked friends and family to donate materials, and soon she had enough to make beds for the shelter animals. With the help of her mother, she learned basic sewing skills and turned the donated fabrics into small, comfortable beds. The first time she brought the handmade beds to the shelter, the staff and animals were delighted. Seeing the animals sleep peacefully on the soft beds made Emma realize that small efforts could make a big difference. Encouraged by her success, Emma decided to expand her project. She created a social media page to share her idea and encourage others to help. Soon, more people joined her cause. Some donated fabrics, while others helped sew the beds. Even a local store agreed to support her by providing free materials. Today, Emma’s project has spread to other shelters in different cities.
