B It may just be Southern California’s longest drive-through line. But when drivers pull up to the front, there’s no window, fast food or even cashiers. Instead, each car is met with a group of volunteers, efficiently placing fresh produce and groceries in the trunk, free of charge. This is the Seva Collective food pantry (食品储藏室) in Santa Ana, California, a food desert, which is an area where affordable healthy food is difficult to get, particularly for those who have no cars. This organization began as a disorganized operation — only a few volunteers to work together, food and toys purchased just by the organizers themselves, and a dream to help a community deal with food insecurity. Thousands of meals later, the Seva Collective continued to grow, employing new volunteers and partnering with food banks, companies and farms. “We line cars up as early as three or four in the morning. And our goal is to provide fresh food for every family,” said Bandana Singh, co-founder of the Seva Collective. “I rely upon the food pantry month after month in order to feed my family,” said resident Jody Watts. “It takes away a sense of anxiety about not having enough food to supply my family.” 4. The Seva Collective offered food to every family. 7. What does Jody Watts think of the Seva Collective food pantry? A. Anxious. B. Helpful. C. Formal. D. Ordinary. C A stretch of more than 70 kilometers of shoreline in Dubai could become the site of the world’s largest coastal regeneration (再生) project, if a project called Dubai Mangroves (红树林) were to go ahead. Over 100 million mangroves - a group of trees that live mainly in coastal waters, where they are able to support entire ecosystems - will be planted as part of the project. That’s enough to take in over 1.2 million metric tons of CO2 per year, according to URB, a global leader in developing sustainable cities. “Mangroves help protect against coastal erosion and rising sea levels, which are important issues for coastal cities like Dubai,” says Baharash Bagherian, an urban planner and founder of URB. “We’re currently researching,” he adds. “We’ve found six locations for pilot studies and are focusing on the designs for those locations. We plan to finish the project by 2040.” Technology will play a role in both the development and the operations of Dubai Mangroves, with artificial intelligence (AI) constantly checking over the plants. “We plan to use advanced tools such as drone (无人驾驶飞机) reforestation to plant mangroves efficiently and remote sensing technology to monitor the health and growth of the mangrove forests,” says Bagherian. Drones will place the mangrove seeds in locations where they have the best chance of survival satellite pictures will then be used to gain a roundup of the mangrove coverage, making it easier to discover areas that require increased attention. Bagherian believes that the project will not only fight climate change and develop the local economy, but also improve the quality of life for locals. 8. What is the purpose of the first paragraph? A. To present a concept. B. To introduce the topic. C. To prove a theory. D. To argue for an idea. 9. What can we learn from Bagherian’s words? A. Dubai suffers from pollution. B. URB has finished the designs for studies. C. The Dubai Mangroves project will be finished very soon. D. Mangroves contribute to fighting against rising sea levels. 10. What can technology help to do in Dubai Mangrove project? A. Watch mangroves carefully. B. Plant mangroves remotely. C. Monitor the rising sea levels. D. Protect mangroves. 11. What does the underlined word “roundup” in paragraph 5 mean? A. Good memory. B. Great benefit. C. Whole view. D. Serious situation. D Light pollution is the human-made change of outdoor light levels from those that naturally exist. It is the presence of unwanted, unfit, or too much artificial (人造的) lighting. Light pollution can have a number of bad effects, damaging wildlife, reducing natural beauty, and even threatening human health. Despite a growing awareness (意识) of light pollution and its effects, and the increasing number of dark-sky places, the overall situation is getting worse. According to a 2023 study published in Science magazine, the number of stars visible (可见的) in the night sky decreased between 7-10% per year from 2011 to 2022. At that rate, a location that had 250 visible stars in 2011 would see a reduction to just 100 visible stars over a decade. This worsening of light pollution is mainly due to several factors. Along with population growth, people seek higher standards of living, which leads to more roads, houses, shopping malls, and street lighting. The type of lighting in use has also changed. LED lighting makes it very cheap to have more light and brighter light than ever before. Coupled with the wrong idea that more light is better, homeowners and property managers are rapidly increasing the number of light outdoors. Unlike environmental challenges like climate change, species extinction, and habitat destruction (破坏), which require significant top-down responses, meaningful action can be taken from the bottom up to address light pollution. That means that as much as governments can make rules to limit light pollution — countries like France, Slovenia, and Croatia already have laws to this effect — individual homeowners can make a difference by using light only where and when needed. They can also choose to use warm-white or yellow light instead of blue light. This aids night vision by all animals, including people. There’s also a global movement for “dark-sky places”, which have plans to limit light pollution and communicate with local people and companies to promote good outdoor lighting practices. Right now, there are more than 350 of these dark-sky places in the whole world. 12. Why are the numbers mentioned in the second paragraph? A. To explain the bad effects of light pollution. B. To draw attention to further space exploration. C. To introduce the rapid increase in visible stars. D. To stress the achievement in reducing light pollution. 13. What may be a cause of the increase in light pollution? A. Higher demands for safety. B. The growth of homeowners. C More affordable LED lighting. D. The rise of green awareness. 14. What can we learn about “dark-sky places” from the last paragraph? A. The attention to it is limited. B. The impact of it is unexpected. C It has gained worldwide support. D. It has improved the communication between companies. 15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A. The Rise of Dark-Sky Movements B. The Future of LED Lighting Technology C. The Economic Impact of Light Pollution D. The Growing Light Pollution and Its Solutions 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 It’s time for holiday decorations.
