Long ago, there was a monster named Nian. It had sharp teeth and horns. Every year, Nian came to villages to eat animals, crops, and even people! One day, an old man told the villagers, ‘Nian is afraid of loud noises, red color, and fire.’ So, the villagers lit firecrackers, hung red lanterns, and wore red clothes. When Nian came, it saw the red color, heard the loud noises, and ran away! From then on, people celebrated Spring Festival with fireworks, red decorations, and loud noises to keep Nian away.

China's Spring Festival inscribed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity
The Spring Festival, also called Chinese New Year, is one of the most important festivals in China and around the world. In 2024, UNESCO added the Spring Festival to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This shows how important the festival is, not just for China but for all humanity.
The Spring Festival is about family, peace, and harmony. During this time, millions of people travel home to be with their families. This is called the "greatest human migration on Earth." The festival lasts for 15 days and ends with the Lantern Festival. Families eat special foods like dumplings and sticky rice cakes, which carry blessings for the new year.
The festival also has many traditions, like fireworks and red decorations. These were originally used to scare away a monster called "Nian." Today, people still hang red lanterns and set off fireworks to bring good luck. Other activities, like paper-cutting and dragon dances, make the Spring Festival a happy time for everyone.
