He lives in a small dormitory with only second - hand furniture. He gets clothes and other items from charity shops. His material life is simple and plain. He also takes care of a small garden where he grows fruit trees, vegetables and flowers.

Despite being wealthy, Jason felt tired and guilty. He was seen as a “successful person” but witnessed many people having nothing. Not helping others made his spirit troubled.
By donating money, living a simple life and helping others, Jason gains a sense of satisfaction and true success. He finds the meaning of life, with a rich spiritual world. He believes success lies in understanding the true essence of life.

Jason felt unhappy/tired when he was rich. Because he was tired of being regarded as living a successful life as a person who had everything while many people had nothing.
2. Why did he give away all his money to charities?
He gave away all his money to charities because he knew millions of people died of hunger every year, there were places with no schools and no teachers, and many children could never go to school and didn't have the chance to learn and get on in life. He felt guilty being a rich man without doing anything to help.
3. How did he feel after he gave away all his money to charities? Why?
He felt a kind of satisfaction and a real sense of success that he had never felt before. Because he thought his sense of achievement came from helping others and finding true meaning in life. And he was living according to his values, realizing that success is not measured by how much money one has but by how one understands the true meaning of life.

动词 -ing 形式(动名词)语法全解
一、本质与语法功能基础
动词 -ing 形式(动名词),形式上是 “动词原形 + ing”,本质兼具动词和名词的特性。它在句子里能像名词一样,充当主语、宾语、表语、定语等语法成分。
二、主语(Subject)功能
动名词作主语,是把一个动作或行为整体 “名词化”,作为句子描述的核心对象 。
(一)基础用法与语义强调
例:“Running is good for health.”(跑步对健康有益 )。“Running” 这个动名词作主语,强调 “跑步” 这个行为本身具备 “对健康有益” 的属性,是句子要阐述的核心事件 。

对比:若用不定式 “To run is good for health.” ,虽也可作主语,但更侧重 “某次具体去跑步的行为” ,而动名词作主语常表达 “习惯性、一般性的行为” ,不过在很多语境里二者差异会弱化,动名词主语更自然简洁 。
(二)复杂句式中的主语用法
在 “It is + 形容词 / 名词 + doing sth.” 结构中,动名词作真实主语,it 是形式主语 。
例 1:“It is no use crying over spilt milk.”(覆水难收 )。“crying over spilt milk” 是真实主语,说明 “做这件事(为洒掉的牛奶哭泣 )” 是 “没用的(no use )” ,it 只是占位,让句子结构更平衡 。
例 2:“It is a waste of time talking with him.”(和他交谈是浪费时间 ),“talking with him” 是真实主语,阐述 “和他交谈” 这件事的性质是 “浪费时间” 。

三、宾语(Object)功能
动名词作宾语,分为 “动词宾语” 和 “介词宾语” 两类,且和不同动词、介词搭配有规律:
(一)作动词宾语(及物动词后接动名词)
1. 固定只接动名词作宾语的动词
这类动词记忆要点是归纳常见词,比如 “enjoy(享受 )、finish(完成 )、avoid(避免 )、mind(介意 )、suggest(建议 )、practise(练习 )” 等 。
例:“She enjoys singing in the shower.”(她喜欢在淋浴时唱歌 ),“singing” 作 enjoy 的宾语,体现 “享受” 的具体行为内容 ;“He finished reading the novel.”(他读完了小说 ),“reading the novel” 是 finish 这个动作的对象,说明完成的行为是 “读小说” 。

2. 既接动名词又接不定式作宾语的动词(语义有差异)
“remember”“forget”“regret”:
接动名词时,表 “记得 / 忘记 / 后悔做过某事(动作已发生 )” ,如 “I remember meeting her before.”(我记得之前见过她 ),“meeting” 是已经发生的行为 ;“He forgot paying the bill.”(他忘了自己付过账单了 ),“paying” 是过去做过的事 ;“She regrets hurting his feelings.”(她后悔伤害了他的感情 ),“hurting” 是已发生的行为导致后悔 。
接不定式时,表 “记得 / 忘记 / 后悔去做某事(动作未发生 )” ,如 “Remember to lock the door.”(记得去锁门 ,还没锁 );“Don't forget to call me.”(别忘了给我打电话 ,还没打 );“I regret to tell you the bad news.”(我很遗憾要告诉你这个坏消息 ,还未告知 ,常用来表达遗憾地做某事 )。

“stop”:
接动名词,表 “停止做正在做的事” ,如 “Stop talking! The class begins.”(别讲话了!开始上课了 ),停止的是 “讲话” 这个正在进行的行为 。
接不定式,表 “停下(手头事 )去做另一件事” ,如 “He stopped to have a rest.”(他停下来去休息 ,停下之前的动作,目的是休息 )。
“try”:
接动名词,表 “尝试做某事(试试某种做法 )” ,如 “Try adding some sugar to the coffee.”(试试往咖啡里加些糖 ),是尝试 “加糖” 这个行为 。
接不定式,表 “努力去做某事(强调付出努力 )” ,如 “Try to finish the work on time.”(努力按时完成工作 ),侧重努力达成 “完成工作” 的结果 。

(二)作介词宾语(介词后接动名词)
所有介词(如 of、in、on、about、by 等 )后面,若要接动词,都得用动名词形式 。
例 1:“She is good at dancing.”(她擅长跳舞 ),“at” 是介词,“dancing” 作其宾语,说明擅长的具体内容 。
例 2:“He left without saying goodbye.”(他没说再见就离开了 ),“without” 是介词,“saying goodbye” 作宾语,体现 “离开” 时伴随的行为缺失 。
例 3:“What about going for a walk?”(去散步怎么样? ),“about” 是介词,“going for a walk” 作宾语,用于提出建议的内容 。
例 4:“By working hard, we can achieve our goals.”(通过努力工作,我们能实现目标 ),“by” 表方式,“working hard” 作宾语,说明实现目标的途径 。
