C One thing that sets humans apart from other members of the animal kingdom is our tendency to develop customs and traditions. Here are some astonishing customs from around the world. An odd custom associated with the United States is its complicated tipping culture. Unlike many other countries that don’t tip at all or that only tip in small amounts when the food is particularly good, tipping is actually mandatory at most restaurants in the US. To put it another way, customers have a duty to leave between 10-20 percent of the bill in tips. Wait staff rely on these tips for a living because legal wages for waiters are low. Furthermore, there are rules for tipping bartenders, delivery people and other service personnel. While some criticize this practice as irrational, there’s no doubt that tipping culture in the US gives an incentive for waiters and waitresses to provide better service. Some countries find the act of pointing with the index finger to be rude. While members of most cultures would probably agree that pointing fingers, both literally and figuratively, isn’t exactly the nicest thing in the world, in countries like Malaysia and Indonesia, this gesture can be seen as incredibly offensive. Instead, it is customary to gesture towards things with the thumb as this is seen as a more polite option. In many countries in Africa, pointing is reserved for inanimate objects only, not people. Most societies around the world have rules about table manners. For western cultures, noisily consuming food is considered rude. In Japan, however, making slurping(啧啧响的)sounds while eating has an entirely different meaning. This might have something to do with the fact that in western countries, noodles are properly consumed by twirling(缠绕)them on a spoon before putting them in the mouth. Meanwhile, the Japanese simply slurp up their noodles without contorting them first, an act that is naturally noisier than the former. Making slurping sounds when eating noodles in Japan is a way of indicating that you’re rely enjoying them. Some scientists even argue slurping invites air into the mouth and actually enhances the noodles’ flavor. 8. What does the underlined word “mandatory” in paragraph2 probably mean? A. Required by tradition. B. Highly spoken of. C. Changeable over time. D. Popular among people. 9. What does the author think of tipping? A. It is totally unreasonable. B. It must follow a fixed standard. C. It can improve the quality of service. D. It should only target waiters and waitresses. 10. Which practice is acceptable according to the text? A. Skipping tipping in the USA. B. Twirling noodles on a spoon in Africa. C. Pointing with the index finger in Indonesia. D. Making sounds while eating noodles in Japan. 11. Where is this text probably taken from? A. A research paper. B. A travel brochure. C. An online advertisement. D. A popular magazine. D A group of American tigers in a swampy(沼泽的)area of Brazil eat more fish than land animals, and are happy to socialise and play together, according to a new study. They are the first wild American tigers known to feed on large amounts of fish. Researchers from Oregon State University in the US, with Brazilian colleagues studied a population of wild American tigers in the Brazilian Pantanal, a low-lying region of Brazil where water runs off nearby mountains to create swamps. It’s the world’s largest freshwater wetland habitat, but wildlife there can be difficult to study with few roads. Therefore, researchers set up cameras to film anything walking by. They also put tracking devices on 13 random American tigers. Over 1,500 videos were gathered showing 69 individual American tigers. They are strong swimmers and the videos showed them eating lots of fish. They also ate reptiles living in the water, such as lizards. The analysis of 138 American tiger scats(粪便)also found they mostly contained bones of fish and reptiles living in the water—only 11% had mammal remains. This is surprising because mammals such as deer and monkeys form the main part of American tigers’ diets in other places. Even tigers in India’s wetlands eat mostly land-based mammals. The cameras also delivered other surprises. American tigers usually enjoy being alone, only coming together to fight over territory, but the video showed two adult males playing, fishing and traveling together—a kind of behaviour that had never been seen before. Charlotte Eriksson, who led the study, thinks it possible if the wetlands provide adequate fish. 12. In what way did the scientists conduct the research? A. They observed some typical tigers. B. They recorded the routines of the tigers. C. They compared the wastes of the tigers. D. They studied the surroundings for the tigers. 13. Why were the scats of the tigers analysed? A. To confirm the tigers live on fish. B. To prove the tigers are good swimmers. C. To claim the tigers are the fittest to survive. D. To present the tigers live in a swampy area. 14. What can we conclude from the interactions of the two tigers? A. A dog does not eat a dog. B. Two heads are better than one. C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. Where there is rich food, there is peace. 15. What is the best title for this passage? A. Wild American tigers’ diet changes. B. A wetland habitat offers enough food. C. Wild American tigers surprise experts. D. A new species catches public attention. E Everybody hates rats. But in the earthquake capitals of the world—Japan, Los Angeles, Turkey—rats will soon be man's new best friends. What happens after an earthquake? We send in rescue dogs. Why? Because they can smell people. Dogs save lives. They help rescuers to find living people. But dogs are big and they can't get into small spaces. So now a new research project is using a smaller animal to save lives: the rat. How does it work? First, the rat is trained to smell people. When this happens, the rat's brain gives a signal (信号). This is sent to a small radio on its back, and then the rescuers follow the radio signals. When the rat's brain activity jumps, the rescuers know that someone is alive. The rat has smelled that person. Although there are already robots which can do this job, rats are better. Christian Linster at Cornell University, New York, says, “Robots' noses don't work well when there are other smells around. Rats are good at that.” Rats can also see in the dark. They are cheaper and quicker to train than dogs, and unlike robots, they don't need electricity! The “rat project” is not finished, but Julie Ryan of International Rescue Corps in Scotland says, “It would be fantastic. A rat could get into spaces we couldn't get to, and a rat would get out if it wasn't safe.” Perhaps for the first time in history, people will be happy to see a rat in a building (but only after an earthquake, of course.) 16. In the world earthquake capitals, rats will become man's best friends because they can ______. A. take the place of man's rescue jobs B. find the position of people alive who are trapped in buildings C. serve as food for people alive who are trapped in buildings D. get into small spaces 17. From the third paragraph we know the rescuers can judge a person who is alive by ______. A. the noise made by the rat B. the rat's unusual behaviour C. the smell given off by the person D. the signal sent by the radio on the rat's back 18. Rats have all the following advantages EXCEPT that ______. A. they are more fantastic than other animals B. they are less expensive to train than dogs C. they don't need electricity D. they are small and can get into small places F Chinese New Year has been welcomed in Britain with its biggest ever program of events and celebrations. From London's Trafalgar Square to major cities across Britain, tens of thousands of British people have joined Chinese communities to celebrate the arrival of the New Year. In Manchester there was a Dragon Parade(舞龙表演),led by a very impressive 54-meter long dragon, ending in Chinatown where there was traditional Chinese entertainment, more than 6, 000 lanterns, street food villages and a fireworks show. Celebrations also took place in Liverpool, Birmingham, Durham, Edinburgh, Leeds and Newcastle. Academic Dr Wu Kegang said that the Chinese New Year event in Britain “is now bigger than ever and it is growing every year”. When Wu arrived in Britain 26 years ago from Guangdong, the first thing he noticed was that Chinese New Year was celebrated mainly in towns and cities with big Chinese communities. “You would go to London Chinatown and join your countrymen to celebrate, or to Chinatowns in places like Liverpool and Manchester for events almost only held for Chinese people, ”Wu recalled. “Now it is so different, and we are seeing local communities all over the country taking part alongside their own Chinese populations, ” he said. “It is clear to me that the celebrations will continue to grow in Britain. Chinese New Year has earned its place in the calendar of events in Britain, and is here to stay. ” 19. Where did the Dragon Parade take place? A. In London. B. In Liverpool. C. In Manchester. D. In Birmingham. 20. When Dr Wu arrived in Britain 26 years ago, Chinese New Year was________ A. celebrated mainly by Chinese communities B. celebrated by local communities all over the country C. only celebrated in London, Liverpool and Manchester D. celebrated by tens of thousands of British people with Chinese people 21. How does Dr Wu think Chinese New Year will develop in Britain? A. It will lose its attraction. B. It will become a British official holiday. C. More and more British people will join in the celebrations. D. It will become the most important one in the calendar of events in Britain. 22. What does this passage mainly tell us? A. How Chinese New Year is celebrated in Britain. B. Where Chinese New Year is celebrated in Britain. C. Chinese culture is more attractive than British culture. D. Chinese New Year has become more and more popular in Britain. G It happens from time to time that after a whole morning of studying, you are tired in the afternoon. It’s then that you might want to eat something sweet, perhaps a chocolate bar to lift your mood. After all, it’s popularly believed that a “sugar rush” gives us energy. But a study published in Neuroscience& Biobehavioral Reviews suggests that sugar can make us feel worse rather than boost our moods. The German and UK researchers collected data from 31 studies involving nearly 1, 300 adults. They studied the effect of sugar on various aspects of the mood, including anger, depression and tiredness. They found that people who have too much sugar become more tired within an hour, and that these feelings become more intense (强烈的) over time. According to the researchers, when people take in sugar, their blood sugar levels rise rapidly, leading to a burst of energy and a short period of feeling good. However, as they begin to digest (消化) the sugar, their blood sugar levels decrease quickly, leading to a bad feeling. To remain on a “high”, people are likely to eat more and more sugar until they become addicted to it. As with caffeine, this prevents the body from relaxing, leaving people feeling tired. But the study findings don’t mean we must give up sweet food altogether. According to the World Health Organization, it is healthy to have the sugars found naturally in fruit, vegetables and milk, as long as these make up less than 5 percent of daily total energy intake. So the next time you feel tired and can’t concentrate, perhaps you should think twice before you bite into a chocolate bar. 23. What does the underlined word “boost” in paragraph 2 probably mean? A. Improve. B. Harm. C. Control. D. Ignore. 24. How do people feel after they have too much sugar according to the researchers? A. They feel relaxed. B. They feel more tired. C. They are more focused. D. They feel energetic. 25. What do we learn from paragraphs 4 and 5? A. Our moods are connected with our blood sugar levels. B. Taking in more sugar benefits mental health. C. Getting caffeine is another way to refresh yourself. D. Sugar and caffeine have quite different effects. 26. Where does this passage probably come from? A. A sports report. B. A health journal. C. An economic report. D. A medical newspaper. H Read a lot, I mean a lot! You have to increase your ability for reading. Many students are in the habit of reading only when their exams are approaching while some others read only what they are taught or things that must be read because it is in their curriculum (课程). But listen to me now, I am telling you from my own experience that it is a very bad habit and it is not enough to improve your intelligence. You have to learn and get ready to become versatile in your reading. The fact that you are studying medicine in school does not mean that you should not know one or two things on politics. Many people have complained to me that they find it hard to read stuffs like novels but I just shake my head in pity for them because it is obvious they have failed to realize the truth in that wise saying by Margaret Fuller that “today a READER, tomorrow a LEADER!” When you read, you get to “see” so many places and it will be as if you have visited those places in real life. This is because reading will improve your imagination and creativity and understanding. You also get experience from learning about how people dealt with their various problems therefore saving you from going through the pains and difficulties they must have gone through! Reading will also help you in improving your vocabulary because you will certainly start coming across so many new words which you will try as much as possible to get accustomed to with the help of the dictionary! The good thing about increasing your vocabulary is that it will also improve your thinking ability. After all, we think in words and the more words you know, the easier it will become for you to express yourself or your thoughts. And when you read, make sure you read so wide because the more you read the more you know and the more you know the more intelligent you can become. 27. According to the author, what should students do in terms of reading? A. They needn’t read unless the exams come. B. They should read books about intelligence. C. They must read about politics when their major is medicine. D. They should read as wide as possible. 28. The underlined word “versatile” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to _____. A. interested B. many-sided C. content D. confident 29. What is the best title for the passage? A. Increase your ability for reading B. Read wide and improve your vocabulary C. Reading improves your intelligence D. Reading makes you a leader tomorrow 30. What is the benefit of knowing more words? A. You will get used to referring to the dictionary when meeting with new words. B. You will have less difficulty expressing your opinions. C. Vocabulary will improve your creativity. D. You can pass your exams with ease. I Ireland has had a very difficult history. The problems started in the 16th century when English rulers tried to vanquish Ireland. For hundreds of years, the Irish people fought against the English. Finally, in 1921, the British government was forced to give independence to the south of Ireland. The result is that today there are two “Irelands”. Northern Ireland, in the north, is part of the United Kingdom. The Republic of Ireland, in the south, is an independent country. In the 1840s the main crop, potatoes, was affected by disease and about 750,000 people died of hunger. This, and a shortage of work, forced many people to leave Ireland and live in the USA, the UK, Australia and Canada. As a result, the population fell from 8.2 million in 1841 to 6.6 million in 1851. For many years, the majority of Irish people earned their living as farmers. Though many people still follow the routine nowadays, more and more people are moving to the cities to work in factories and offices. Life in the cities is very different from life in the countryside, where things move at a quieter and slower pace. The Irish are famous for being warm-hearted and friendly. Oscar Wilde, a famous Irish writer, once said that the Irish were “the greatest talkers since the Greeks”. Since independence, Ireland has revived (复兴) its own culture of music, language, literature and singing. Different areas have different styles of old Irish songs which are sung without instruments. Other kinds of Irish music use many different instruments such as the violin, whistles, etc. 31. What does the underlined word “vanquish” in Paragraph 1 probably mean? A. Conquer. B. Ruin. C. Protect. D. Free. 32. Why did the population of Ireland once decrease greatly? A. The Irish were killed by the English rulers. B. The Irish were affected by a deadly disease. C. The Irish were not eager to give birth to babies. D. The Irish suffered from food and work shortage. 33. How did most Irish people make their living? A. By working in the fields. B. By working in factories. C. By trading with other countries. D. By performing musical instruments. 34. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Life in Ireland B. Ireland, Past and Present C. A Very Difficult History D. The Independence of Ireland J All networks like 3G and 4G will be things of the past, because 5G will be reachable in the near future. So, what’s so special about a 5G future? First of all, its download speed can be as fast as 20GB/s, which is 100 to 200 times that of 4G. But what’s more impressive is 5G’S low delay rate. Now, 4G takes an average of 200 milliseconds (毫秒) to send and receive information. But 5G will get it down to 1 millisecond. 5G is a great breakthrough (突破). It’s going to change the way equipment connects to the Internet, and more importantly, to each other. And self-driving cars may be one of the biggest breakthroughs to come out of 5G. Human reaction time is 200 milliseconds, yet we still have accidents every day. The self-driving car under a 5G network could react and communicate its reaction to hundreds of cars around it, all within 1 millisecond. It’ll play a great role in preventing car accidents and ending traffic jams completely. 5G can benefit us in many other ways. Operations could be performed by robots controlled by experts from the other side of the world. Therefore, more lives will be saved in time. Factories can be staffed by robots that can communicate their tasks to each other, and they can do more work efficiently over a 5G network. Imagine a group of drones (无人机) flying over a field of crops, using sensors (传感器) on the ground to sort, pick, feed, and water plants all on their own. Then farmers won’t have to work so hard anymore. But, 5G is not perfect. One major disadvantage has to do with why it’s so fast. 5G uses the millimeter waves, while 4G uses the 15 to 40 centimeter-long waves. And shorter waves go fast but not very far. On 4G networks, the signal can go 10 kilometers. But the 5G signal can go at most 300 meters, and it can’t even go through walls or rain. So, what does that mean? Having such a short signal distance means we need to build a lot of transmitters (信号发射塔) in the future. 35. How does the author show us 5G’s advantages in Paragraph 1? A. By giving examples of the uses of 5G. B. By making comparisons between 4G and 5G. C. By explaining the scientific principles of 5G. D. By analyzing 5G’s development from 4G. 36. According to the author, the self-driving cars will ______. A. cause more car accidents B. slow down 5G’s development C. ran without being connected to the Internet D. have a much faster reaction speed than humans 37. What does the underlined part “be staffed by robots” in Paragraph 3 mean? A. Be built by robots. B. Have robots as workers. C. Offer employees home robots. D. Produce more medical robots. 38. What is the main idea of the text? A. The development of 5G is challenging. B. Some disadvantages of 5G network remain to be improved. C. 5G network could be applied to hospitals, factories and drones. D. 5G is a great breakthrough and can benefit people in many ways. Which of the following can best describe Peter Kine? A. Generous and caring. B. Honest an responsible. C. Diligent and hopeful. D. Energetic and knowledgeable.
