Arthur Lih of Massapequa sold his first LifeVac, a device to help save people’s life, to a fire department about 18 months ago, when the Jericho Fire Department purchased 21 of the devices. Now about 10 Long Island fire departments have purchased Lih’s invention, which is designed to draw foreign objects from the throats of choking victims when procedures such as the Heimlich Maneuver (海姆立克急救法) don’t work. He has sold about 5,000 LifeVac devices in the United States and abroad since the device went on the market in August 2014.
The Freeport Fire Department is one of Lih’s clients. It bought about 25 LifeVac devices to put on trucks, as well as in chiefs’ vehicles, said Ray Maguire, the department’s executive director. “It’s an extra tool in the toolbox,” Maguire said. “I’d be surprised if anyone who sees it doesn’t purchase it. It’s that tool you may only need once, but it’s the tool you really want in case you need it. It’s affordable. I have it in my car. I have one at home, too.”
Dr. Lee Smith at Northwell Health said that if a choking victim can’t breathe, he or she becomes a candidate for the Heimlich. If the Heimlich doesn’t work, the victim would probably lose consciousness because of a lack of oxygen.
A challenge for any new medical device is convincing potential users that it works and is safe. In tests, the LifeVac successfully removed an obstruction (阻塞物) from the throat of a dead human body on the first try 49 out of 50 times, according to an August research article in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine.
Lih invented the product in his garage, inspired after he went with a friend to a hospital while the friend’s mother was going through tests. The friend said the last time he was there, a 7-year-old child had choked to death on a grape.
24. What’s the function of the LifeVac device?
A. To put out the fire. B. To remove foreign objects.
C. To design procedures. D. To treat victims’ throats.
25. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us about the invention?
A. Its target users. B. Its practical necessity.
C. Its major advantages. D. Its reasonable price
26. What inspired Lih to invent the product?
A. A kid’s death. B. His client’s suggestion.
C. A garage accident. D. Material rewards.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. A productive inventor. B. A convincing cure.
C. An anti-choking device. D. An important toolbox.
C
You won’t find tigers jumping through fiery hoops in the wild or bears riding bicycles. Wild elephants don’t walk around on two legs and wild sea lions don’t balance balls on their noses for fun. These are the kinds of animal acts you may have seen at the circus.
However, the wild animals in circuses are extremely stressed by circus conditions. The loud noise of the music, the cheers of the crowd and the dizzying lights all disorientate (失去方向) and cause stress to wild animals. Over long periods, this can result in abnormal behaviors and health problems related to anxiety. While it is possible that domesticated dogs could enjoy the stimulation of certain types of circus training and performance, for wild species such as tigers, bears and monkeys, performing on stage can get them deeply hurt. The movements and poses are completely unnatural and can cause physical injury and stress. When circus animals don’t perform the trick right, they are often beaten as punishment.
The living conditions at circuses consistently fail to meet the animals’ most basic needs. When the show stops, the animals typically return to isolation in small, barren cages which give them no opportunity to carry out behaviors natural to their species, or to interact with their own kind. While not performing, the animals have nothing to do but stare at the walls. Many are limited to living in dark places with no daylight, no sunlight, and no exposure to the outside for stimulation. They live mind-numbing, boring, completely unnatural lives.
Traveling circus animals can spend up to 11 months of the year on the road. They are limited inside very small stalls or cages, traveling for thousands of hours, over very long distances. It’s disturbing, unnatural, frightening and stressful for them. Nearly all circus animals are chained up and immobilized while traveling. Traveling poses many physical risks to them, including accidents, injuries, heart stroke and overheating, unusual cold and freezing temperatures that can make them sick, loud noise and general discomfort.
28. Why are animals in circuses unhealthy both mentally and physically?
A. Because of their abnormal behavior. B. Because of their performances on stage.
C. Because of their punishment from trainers. D. Because of their unnatural living conditions.
29. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The animals’ basic needs when a show stops.
B. The animals’ living state when they do not perform.
C. The animals’ mental state when they are travelling.
D. The animals’ daily interactions when they are caged.
30. What does the underlined word “immobilized” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Fixed in a place. B. Delivered to a place. C. Trained by someone. D. Followed by someone.
31. What’s the author’s attitude towards those animals in circuses?
A. Indifferent. B. Annoyed. C. Sympathetic. D. Opposed.
D
Does a happy person live longer? Many studies have convinced us that happiness brings good health, which has resulted in an increasing demand for speakers and products encouraging positive thinking. However, being happy does not promise that one is going to be healthy. There are other factors that influence one’s health and long life such as a person’s genes or even a person’s socio-economic condition.
Some research even suggests that positive thinking can be dangerous. Positive thinking, when taken to the extreme, can cause a person to be separated from reality. For example, a person who thinks that staying happy and positive can help him recover from an illness like cancer but later fails to recover from it, may blame himself for not being happy. In this case, positive thinking may potentially make the victim disregard other factors. Sometimes the pursuit of happiness is even associated with serious mental health problems such as depression.
All types of happiness are not good for us either. For example, pride, a pleasant feeling, can sometimes rob us of the ability to empathize with others or understand another’s viewpoint. This anti-social behavior can cause people around us to turn away from us, and this could, in turn, make us feel lonely and do harm to our mental and even physical health.
Moreover, unpleasant feelings can be beneficial to a person’s well-being. Researchers believe that unpleasant feelings can help us make sense of our challenges and experiences in a way that supports psychological well-being. For example, if I have behaved badly towards my good friend, the feelings of guilt and sadness might motivate me to apologize and ask for forgiveness. The rebuilding of a broken relationship can be a lift to one’s mental well-being.
In trying to experience happiness, we should remember that seeking for happiness as an end in itself can be self-defeating, and does not necessarily lead to better health. After all, one will surely experience setbacks and conflicts in life. Instead, learning to cope with negative emotions with a realistic positive attitude is key to a person’s good health.
32. What’s the writer’s opinion in this passage?
A. Negative thinking can be dangerous.
B. Staying happy can bring good health.
C. Unpleasant feelings cannot be beneficial.
D. Happiness cannot ensure one’s good health.
33. When can positive thinking be dangerous according to the passage?
A. When we use it with a realistic attitude to solve problems.
B. When we focus on it as an only determinant of happy life.
C. When we think it one of the necessary factor for good health.
D. When we realize it may rob us of the ability to understand others.
34. How can unpleasant feelings be beneficial to a person’s well-being?
A. They rebuild a broken relationship.
B. They lead to self-reflection and personal growth.
C. They help keep the problems and challenges away.
D. They prevent long-term negative effects on mental health.
35. Which of the following has the similar meaning of “an end in itself”?
A. An ultimate goal. B. An individual plan.
C. A final decision. D. A great start.

Awards lined the front wall of the music room from the past successes of large, talented classes. But a shift in educational policies (政策), with an emphasis on academics, had reduced my choir to a mere 32 students. My lead singers had graduated or been forced to drop music classes, leaving me with inexperienced kids who couldn’t read music and could sing only a simple melody (曲子).
This year’s singing contest would be held in seven months. Compared to other school choirs, the Madison choir with 75 members, King School with 125 students and etc., ours was little in size.
One day, a student asked eagerly, “What will we be singing for contest this year?”
I feared this moment. “Maybe we’ll skip the contest,” I suggested.
“No! We can make it!” the kids screamed.
“I’ll have to think about it,” I said, hoping their enthusiasm would die off soon.
But that didn’t happen. Every day they begged and insisted. However, I couldn’t tell them they weren’t good enough as I had to protect their self-esteem (自尊). My efforts to discourage their eagerness, by showing them a difficult piece of music from the contest list, simply ended with, “It’s okay, Mrs. Pliszka, we’ll get it.”
I struggled to make a decision. If I destroyed their hope, would I destroy their spirit? I wasn’t afraid of hard work, and I enjoyed a challenge. But I wasn’t a miracle (奇迹) worker. So I considered this dilemma.
Finally, one morning I stomped into class. “From now on, be in your seats with your music folders on the desk when the bell rings, and sit at attention, ready for warm-ups the instant I’m ready to begin. When I’m working with one section, there will be no talking from the others. You will listen, and you will learn. You will work harder. If all these rules are obeyed, we will be entering the contest. To achieve our big dream, …”
The rest of my sentence was lost in shouts of delight and applause. I was certain they would fail to keep this promise, and no one would have to be embarrassed.
注意:
1. 所写短文的词数应为150 左右;
As the weeks progressed, the kids remained focused.

M: Between the two, the latter one may be better. The wooden floor is lovely, and it has a new kitchen. Plus, it seems slightly bigger than our house.
W: No. I guess it is the same size as ours. It has no furniture, and that is why you believe it’s bigger, I guess.
M: Yeah, maybe.
W: Anyway, I prefer the house in Manton because it was built in a traditional style, though it is on a very busy road. (9)

B 25. B 26. A 27. C
根据第一段“Arthur Lih of Massapequa sold his first LifeVac, a device to help save people’s life, to a fire department about 18 months ago, when the Jericho Fire Department purchased 21 of the devices. Now about 10 Long Island fire departments have purchased Lih’s invention, which is designed to draw foreign objects from the throats of choking victims when procedures such as the Heimlich Maneuver (海姆立克急救法) don’t work. (大约18个月前,马萨皮加的亚瑟·李把他的第一台救生设备卖给了一个消防部门,当时杰里科消防部门购买了21台这个救生设备。现在大约有10个长岛消防部门购买了李的发明,该发明旨在当海姆利克氏急救法等程序不起作用时,从窒息受害者的喉咙中抽出异物。)”可知,李发明的 LifeVac是救生设备,用来取出窒息受害者的喉咙中的异物。故选B项。
25.主旨大意题。根据第二段“The Freeport Fire Department is one of Lih’s clients. It bought about 25 LifeVac devices to put on trucks, as well as in chiefs’ vehicles, said Ray Maguire, the department’s executive director. ‘It’s an extra tool in the toolbox,’ Maguire said. ‘I’d be surprised if anyone who sees it doesn’t purchase it. It’s that tool you may only need once, but it’s the tool you really want in case you need it. It’s affordable. I have it in my car. I have one at home, too.’
根据最后一段“Lih invented the product in his garage, inspired after he went with a friend to a hospital while the friend’s mother was going through tests. The friend said the last time he was there, a 7-year-old child had choked to death on a grape. (李在他的车库里发明了这款产品,灵感出自于他和一个朋友去医院,当时朋友的母亲正在做检查。这位朋友说,上次他在那里的时候,一个7岁的孩子被一颗葡萄噎死。)”可知,这个孩子被葡萄噎着了,但是去了医院也没被救回来,说明海姆立克急救法没奏效,这个孩子的死亡促成Lih发明这个救生设备。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第一段“Now about 10 Long Island fire departments have purchased Lih’s invention, which is designed to draw foreign objects from the throats of choking victims when procedures such as the Heimlich Maneuver (海姆立克急救法) don’t work. (现在大约有10个长岛消防部门购买了李的发明,该发明旨在当海姆利克氏急救法等程序不起作用时,从窒息受害者的喉咙中抽出异物。)”,以及第四段“A challenge for any new medical device is convincing potential users that it works and is safe. In tests, the LifeVac successfully removed an obstruction (阻塞物) from the throat of a dead human body on the first try 49 out of 50 times, according to an August research article in the American Journal of Emergency Medicine. (任何新型医疗设备都面临着一个挑战,那就是让潜在用户相信它是有效和安全的。根据《美国急诊医学杂志》8月份发表的一篇研究文章,在测试中,LifeVac在50次尝试中有49次成功地从死人的喉咙中移除了阻塞物。)”可知,本文介绍了Lih发明的可以防止喉咙处异物阻塞致死的一套设备。故选C项。
D. Opposed.
D 29. B 30. A 31. C
根据第二段“However, the wild animals in circuses are extremely stressed by circus conditions. When circus animals don’t perform the trick right, they are often beaten as punishment.(然而,马戏团里的野生动物因为马戏团的条件而极度紧张。
根据第三段“The living conditions at circuses consistently fail to meet the animals’ most basic needs.
根据划线词所在句“Nearly all circus animals are chained up and immobilized while traveling.(几乎所有的马戏团动物在旅行时都被锁链锁住并immobilized)”中“are chained up”可知,马戏团在出行时动物都是被锁链锁住的,由此可知,它们“被固定在一个地方”,故划线词immobilized与Fixed in a place同义。故选A项。
根据全文内容,特别是第二段“However, the wild animals in circuses are extremely stressed by circus conditions.(然而,马戏团里的野生动物因为马戏团的条件而极度紧张)”和第三段“The living conditions at circuses consistently fail to meet the animals’ most basic needs.(马戏团的居住条件一直不能满足动物最基本的需求)”可知,作者详细描述了马戏团动物所遭受的不公和痛苦,包括表演时的压力、不当的对待以及非自然的居住环境。
D 33. B 34. B 35. A
根据第一段“However, being happy does not promise that one is going to be healthy. There are other factors that influence one’s health and long life such as a person’s genes or even a person’s socio-economic condition.”(然而,快乐并不能保证一个人就会健康。
根据第二段“Some research even suggests that positive thinking can be dangerous. Positive thinking, when taken to the extreme, can cause a person to be separated from reality. For example, a person who thinks that staying happy and positive can help him recover from an illness like cancer but later fails to recover from it, may blame himself for not being happy. In this case, positive thinking may potentially make the victim disregard other factors.”(一些研究甚至表明,积极思考可能是危险的。
根据倒数第二段“Moreover, unpleasant feelings can be beneficial to a person’s well-being. Researchers believe that unpleasant feelings can help us make sense of our challenges and experiences in a way that supports psychological well-being. For example, if I have behaved badly towards my good friend, the feelings of guilt and sadness might motivate me to apologize and ask for forgiveness. The rebuilding of a broken relationship can be a lift to one’s mental well-being.”(此外,不愉快的感觉可能对一个人的健康有益。
根据第一段“However, being happy does not promise that one is going to be healthy. There are other factors that influence one’s health and long life such as a person’s genes or even a person’s socio-economic condition. (然而,快乐并不意味着一个人就会健康。还有其他因素会影响一个人的健康和长寿,例如一个人的基因,甚至一个人的社会经济状况。)”可知,快乐不一定会让我们健康,我们不能把追求快乐当作目的。以及二段说到积极思想有时很危险,第三段说不是所有的快乐都对我们有好处,最后一段“In trying to experience happiness, we should remember that seeking for happiness as an end in itself can be self-defeating, and does not necessarily lead to better health. After all, one will surely experience setbacks and conflicts in life. Instead, learning to cope with negative emotions with a realistic positive attitude is key to a person’s good health.”(在尝试体验快乐的过程中,我们应该记住,把追求快乐作为an end in itself可能会弄巧成拙,也不一定会带来更好的健康。 故选A。

WHAT IS DEEPSEEK?
Officially known as DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Fundamental Technology Research Co, Ltd, the firm ____56____ (found) in July 2023. As an ____57____ (innovate) technology startup, DeepSeek is dedicated to developing cutting-edge large language models (LLMs) and related technologies.
Since its first model “DeepSeek LLM” released in January last year, the company ____58____ (undergo) multiple rounds of iteration. In December, the startup launched its open-source LLM “V3,” ____59____ overtook all of Meta’s open-source LLMs and rivaled OpenAI’s closed-source GPT4-o, according to US media reports.
____60____ traditional approaches like Chain-of-Thought (CoT) and Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT), DeepSeek has distinguished ____61____ (it) in the AI industry by adopting Reinforcement Learning (RL) as a core training method.
The adoption of RL has allowed DeepSeek to enhance its models’ reasoning, adaptability and____62____ (efficient), setting it apart as a frontrunner in the field.
When ____63____ (question) about the meaning of “DeepSeek,” its latest R1 chatbot replied, “The name reflects the company’s mission to deeply explore____64____advance the foundational technologies of AI, aiming _____65_____ (push) the boundaries of AI innovation and application.”
56. was founded 57. innovative 58. has undergone 59. which 60. Unlike
61. itself 62. efficiency 63. questioned 64. and 65. to push
故填was founded。
故填has undergone。
故填which。
When its latest R1 chatbot was questioned about the meaning of “DeepSeek,”。故填questioned。
故填and。
此处为aim to do sth. 故填to push。

Good afternoon, everyone! Ancient poetry is the long-standing traditional culture of China. However, some of students in high school ignore the learning of ancient poetry, thinking it boring and useless, which is really upsetting.

注意:
1. 所写短文的词数应为150 左右;
As the weeks progressed, the kids remained focused.

As the weeks progressed, the kids remained focused. They followed the rules with no complaints and seemed to thrive on the discipline demanded of them. Each morning they sat attention, ready for warm-ups, learned, practiced, rehearsed and went over and over the songs to be sung in the contest. I was amazed at the driving force that kept pushing them on. The courage they had shown from day one overwhelmed me, changing something within myself. No more did I hesitate, but make every effort to teach them. With the passage of time, the kids were making steady and remarkable improvements, which was beyond my expectations. (90w)
When the contest day finally arrived, the kids felt ready to take on the world! They mounted the stairs, smiles of confidence spreading on their faces. Their singing sounded good. The entire audience broke into loud applause the instant they finished their songs. My heart swelled with pride for this little group. After what seemed a century, the results were posted. There was our name at the very top! All around kids were squealing and embracing. Warm tears wet my cheeks. And I was surrounded by kids who had a dream—kids who refused to give up—kids who taught me to never doubt the possibility of success for any student or any class ever again. (95w)
