第一节
Dear Tom,
I know that you’ve been eager to explore our city. I’m writing this letter to tell you that I’m free this weekend and would like to show you around.
In the morning, we’ll begin our journey at the history museum, where we can learn about the city’s history and culture. Following that, we’ll head to a local park famous for its unique natural scenery. We can go to Laocai Ji to have its specialties for lunch. In the afternoon, we’ll wander around the ancient street, trying various local snacks. What’s more, there is a traditional handicraft workshop on the street. We can join in a hands-on pottery-making activity there.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
When Edward came home, his father asked him what books he had bought. He lowered his head but quickly looked up. “I have bought no books,” said he, “because I gave the new silver dollars to some people, who seemed to be very hungry. I think they were in great need of help and I can wait for my books till next New Year. Oh, if only you had seen how glad they were to receive the money!”
“My dear boy, I saw you give the money to the poor German family,” said the father. “Actually, it was a large sum for a little boy to give cheerfully. I am so proud of you, my boy! Here is a whole bundle of books. I give them to you, more as a reward for your goodness of heart than as a New Year’s gift. Be thus ever ready to help the poor and anybody who is in trouble and every year of your life will be to you a happy New Year.”

Sara Thompson showed great effort in getting a degree in teaching, something that not many students can do. She was very happy when she finished school at the State University of New York at Buffalo, and she was the first in her big family to get a college degree.
Sara grew up with eight other brothers and sisters on a farm in Buffalo, New York. Her dad had a job that wasn’t on the farm, and her mom took care of the farm with the kids. Upon graduating from high school, Sara went to a school close by to learn skills, and she worked part-time to pay for her classes because her family didn’t have extra money for college. After she finished that school, she kept working to help her younger brothers and sisters pay for their education.
Now, Sara is married and has three kids. She decided to go back to school to get a better job and to help her family better, while doing something she really likes: teaching. She chose the program at the State University of New York at Buffalo because it was close to her home. She could drive to her classes and be back home in the evening to take care of her kids. Sara’s family helped her a lot while she was studying: her husband worked extra jobs to pay for things, and her mom, who was 65, sometimes looked after the kids.
Even though it was hard, she did well in school and graduated with good grades. Sara had to give up some things to reach her goal, like spending time with her kids and attending important family events. “There were nights when it was very hard to choose between being with my kids and studying for tests or writing papers,” she says. But her kids learned a lot from seeing their mom get her degree. Sara is the first in her family to graduate from college, and she is a great example for her family — she shows that you can do anything if you work hard.
24. What did Sara do after high school?
A. She worked with her dad. B. She funded her own education.
C. She managed the farm alone. D. She taught her brothers and sisters.
25. Why did Sara choose the Buffalo program?
A. To save money for her family. B. To learn from top teachers.
C. To find a high-paying job. D. To care for her kids easily.
26. What did Sara give up for her studies?
A. Her health. B. Her social life. C. Her family time. D. Her career chances.
27. What’s the lesson we can learn from Sara’s story?
A. Effort brings rewards. B. Time equals money.
C. Love overcomes all. D. Schooling is key to success.
C
Saying farewell to someone you love, even for a night, can be difficult, much less saying goodbye for a lifetime or forever in death. Juliet bid Romeo adieu (再见) for the evening with the words, “Parting is such sweet sorrow.” Sweet sorrow is an oxymoron. But this seeming contradiction is true in the context of relationships.
Relationships are based on feelings, emotions, and passion. Deep friendships and loving relationships are measured by the level of emotional attachment. Emotions intensify over time. People spend time with the people they like. The more one person likes another person, the closer the relationship becomes. Each person in the relationship receives an emotional benefit from knowing the other person.
Saying goodbye means separating from the people who make up a significant part of your emotional identity. Separation, even a temporary absence, from the people you have a deep emotional connection with can cause sorrow because you will no longer be able to enjoy their company.
The sweet side of saying goodbye is the emotional fulfillment of being in a close relationship. The time spent together is emotionally rewarding, especially if that person is seen as a soulmate. Humans are social beings. We seek the love and comfort of other people. Loneliness devastates the human condition and leads to sadness. Sad people will do anything they can to find fulfilling relationships. Likewise, happy people will do anything they can to maintain or enhance relationships. Herein lies the essential point of the emotional problem.
The more intense relationships become, the more devastating the emotional loss that is felt upon separation. The exhilaration of relationships cannot be truly measured without experiencing the overwhelming loss of a deep emotional connection.
Enjoy the company of the person you are with as long as you can; knowing the pain you will feel at the end of the relationship is the true measure of the relationship. If it doesn’t hurt to say goodbye, perhaps it wasn’t worth saying hello.
28. Which of the word group can create the same effect as “sweet sorrow”?
A. icy cold B. clicking sound C. deafening silence D. endless speech
29. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. Saying goodbye is unavoidable in our daily life.
B. The companion of close friends can lessen sorrow.
C. A person’s identity is connected with relationship.
D. Separation is the sorrowful part of saying goodbye.
30. What gives a person emotional satisfaction in social life?
A. Making more communication with others.
B. Building deep emotional connections with others.
C. Comforting friends with love and intense feelings.
D. Being a thoughtful person by standing in others’ shoes.
31. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Sweet sorrow is very common in close relationships.
B. The pain of separation is the measure of relationships.
C. Human beings are eager to get emotional fulfillment.
D. Happiness is meaningless without sadness to compare it.
D
For years, scientists have debated whether humans or the climate have caused the population of large mammals to decline dramatically over the past several thousand years. A new study from Aarhus University confirms that climate cannot be the explanation.
About 100,000 years ago, the first modern humans migrated out of Africa in large numbers. They were very good at adapting to new habitats, and they settled in almost every kind of landscape — from deserts to jungles to the icy taiga in the far north.
Part of the success was human’s ability to hunt large animals. With clever hunting techniques and specially built weapons, they perfected the art of killing even the most dangerous mammals.
But unfortunately the great success of our ancestors came at the expense of the other large mammals.
It is well-known that numerous large species went extinct during the time of worldwide colonization by modern humans. Now, new research from Aarhus University reveals that those large mammals that survived also experienced a dramatic decline.
By studying the DNA of 139 living species of large mammals, scientists have been able to show that the abundances of almost all species fell dramatically about 50,000 years ago. This is according to Jens-Christian Svenning, a professor and head of the Danish National Research Foundation’s Center for Ecological Dynamics in a Novel Biosphere (ECONOVO) at Aarhus University and the initiator of the study.
“We’ve studied the evolution of large mammalian populations over the past 750,000 years. For the first 700,000 years, the populations were fairly stable. But 50,000 years ago, the populations fell dramatically and never recovered,” he says, and continues: “For the past 800,000 years, the globe has fluctuated (波动) between ice ages and interglacial periods about every 100,000 years. If the climate was the cause, we should see greater fluctuations when the climate changed 50,000 years earlier. But we don’t. Humans are, therefore, the most likely explanation.”
32. What do the underlined words “the success” mean in Paragraph 3?
A. The evolution of large mammals.
B. The prosperity of various habitats.
C. The achievement of human migration.
D. The progress in hunting techniques.
33. According to Svenning, what happened 50,000 years ago?
A. Populations of large mammals significantly dropped.
B. Living conditions of large mammals remained stable.
C. Global climate dramatically changed.
D. A large number of glaciers suddenly melt.
34. What’s used as a clue of the research according to the last two paragraphs?
A. Species. B. Place. C. Time. D. Climate.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Climate Impact on Animals
B. Changes of Prehistoric Environment
C. Evolution of Large Mammal Populations
D. Human Influence on Giant Mammals

It was a pleasant New Year’s morning. Edward rose, washed and dressed himself in a hurry, because he wanted to be the first to wish everybody a happy New Year.
He looked in every room and shouted out the words of welcome. He ran into the street to repeat them to those he might meet. The festive atmosphere swept up the neighborhood.
When he came back, his father gave him two bright new silver dollars. His face lit up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore.
It was freezing and dry outside and the wind blew strongly. However, Edward left the house with a light heart, intending to buy the books.
As he ran down the street, he saw a poor German family, the father, mother and three children trembling with cold. “I wish you a happy New Year,” said Edward, a she was cheerfully passing by. The man shook his head, saying nothing. “I wish you a happy New Year,” repeated Edward, feeling a little puzzled. The man shook his head again, for he couldn’t understand or speak the language. “You do not belong to this country, do you?” asked Edward. Still the man said nothing, but this time he pointed to his mouth and to his children, as if to say, “These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time.” Edward quickly understood that these people were in trouble. The family were in great need of help. At that moment, he took out his dollars, looked at them over and over, thinking for a short while and finally gave one to the man and the other to his wife.
How their eyes sparkled with gratitude! They said something in their language, which meant, “We thank you a thousand times and will remember you in our prayers.”
Without a word, Edward made his way home, delighted.

C 29. D 30. B 31. B
根据第一段中“ Sweet sorrow is an oxymoron. But this seeming contradiction is true in the context of relationships.(甜蜜的悲伤是一种矛盾修辞法。但这种看似矛盾的现象在人际关系中却是真实存在的。)”可知,本句中sweet sorrow是一种矛盾的修辞方法。C选项中“deafening silence(震耳欲聋的沉默)”与题干中的“甜蜜的悲伤”一致,构成的是修辞的方式是矛盾的修饰方式。故选C。
29. 推理判断题。根据第三段中“Separation, even a temporary absence, from the people you have a deep emotional connection with can cause sorrow because you will no longer be able to enjoy their company.(与你有深厚情感联系的人分离,即使是暂时的缺席,都会带来悲伤,因为你将无法再享受他们的陪伴。)”
根据第二段中“Deep friendships and loving relationships are measured by the level of emotional attachment. Emotions intensify over time,(深厚的友谊和爱的关系是由情感依恋的水平来衡量的。情绪会随着时间的推移而加剧)”以及第四段中“The time spent together is emotionally rewarding, especially if that person is seen as a soulmate. Humans are social beings.(一起度过的时光在情感上是有益的,尤其是如果那个人被视为灵魂伴侣。人类是社会生物)” 可知,一起度过的时光在情感上是有益的即与他人建立深厚的情感联系能使人在社交生活中获得情感上的满足。故选B。
31. 主旨大意题。 通读全文以及根据最后一段中“Enjoy the company of the person you are with as long as you can; knowing the pain you will feel at the end of the relationship is the true measure of the relationship. (尽可能地享受和你在一起的人的陪伴;知道在一段关系结束时你会感受到的痛苦是衡量这段关系的真正标准。如果说再见无伤大雅,那也许不值得说你好)”可知,文章通过“告别”带给人看似矛盾的情感体验这一现象,通过对比等手段,深入分析了痛苦这种情感体验在人际关系疏密中的作用。B选项“The pain of separation is the measure of relationships.(分离的痛苦是衡量感情的尺度。)”
C 33. A 34. C 35. D
根据文章第二段“About 100,000 years ago, the first modern humans migrated out of Africa in large numbers. They were very good at adapting to new habitats, and they settled in almost every kind of landscape—from deserts to jungles to the icy taiga in the far north.(大约10万年前,第一批现代人类大量迁徙出非洲。它们非常善于适应新的栖息地,几乎定居在从沙漠到丛林再到遥远北方冰冷的针叶林的每一种景观中。)”以及第三段“With clever hunting techniques and specially built weapons, they perfected the art of killing even the most dangerous mammals. (成功的一部分是人类狩猎大型动物的能力。凭借巧妙的狩猎技术和特制的武器,他们甚至完善了杀死最危险哺乳动物的艺术。)”可知,此处划线词the success指的是上文提到的人们迁徙的成就。故选C。
33. 细节理解题。根据文章第六段“By studying the DNA of 139 living species of large mammals, scientists have been able to show that the abundances of almost all species fell dramatically about 50,000 years ago. This is according to Jens-Christian Svenning, a professor and head of the Danish National Research Foundation’s Center for Ecological Dynamics in a Novel Biosphere(ECONOVO)at Aarhus University and the initiator of the study.(通过研究139种现存大型哺乳动物的DNA,科学家们已经能够证明,大约5万年前,几乎所有物种的丰度都急剧下降。这是奥胡斯大学丹麦国家研究基金会新生物圈生态动力学中心(ECONOVO)教授兼负责人、该研究的发起人Jens Christian Svenning的说法。)”可知,大约5万年前,大型哺乳动物的数量显著减少。故选A。
根据文章倒数第二段“By studying the DNA of 139 living species of large mammals, scientists have been able to show that the abundances of almost all species fell dramatically about 50,000 years ago. This is according to Jens-Christian Svenning, a professor and head of the Danish National Research Foundation’s Center for Ecological Dynamics in a Novel Biosphere(ECONOVO)at Aarhus University and the initiator of the study.(通过研究139种现存大型哺乳动物的DNA,科学家们已经能够证明,大约5万年前,几乎所有物种的丰度都急剧下降。这是奥胡斯大学丹麦国家研究基金会新生物圈生态动力学中心(ECONOVO)教授兼负责人、该研究的发起人Jens Christian Svenning的说法。)”以及最后一段““We’ve studied the evolution of large mammalian populations over the past 750,000 years. For the first 700,000 years, the populations were fairly stable. But 50,000 years ago, the populations fell dramatically and never recovered,” he says, and continues: “For the past 800,000 years, the globe has fluctuated(波动)between ice ages and interglacial periods about every 100,000 years. If the climate was the cause, we should see greater fluctuations when the climate changed 50,000 years earlier. But we don’t. Humans are, therefore, the most likely explanation.”(“我们研究了过去75万年中大型哺乳动物种群的进化。在最初的70万年里,种群数量相当稳定。但在5万年前,种群数量急剧下降,再也没有恢复,”他说,并继续说道“在过去的80万年里,全球大约每10万年就在冰河时期和间冰期之间波动一次。如果气候是原因,我们应该会在5万年前气候变化时看到更大的波动。但我们没有。因此,人类是最有可能的解释。”)”可知,研究的线索为时间。故选C。
35.主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“For years, scientists have debated whether humans or the climate have caused the population of large mammals to decline dramatically over the past several thousand years. A new study from Aarhus University confirms that climate cannot be the explanation.(科学家多年来一直在辩论是人类还是气候导致了过去几千年大型哺乳动物数量急剧下降的问题。但Aarhus大学的一项新研究证实了气候不可能是解释的原因。)”以及对文章的理解可知,本文说明了科学家多年来一直在辩论是人类还是气候导致了过去几千年大型哺乳动物数量急剧下降的问题。但Aarhus大学的一项新研究证实了气候不可能是解释的原因。故D项“人类对巨型哺乳动物的影响”符合文章标题。故选D。

Learning a language is usually ____56____ (difference) from learning other subjects. It includes a lot of practice and follow-ups. When ____57____ (talk) about my personal experience, I would say that I have a rich experience in learning English ____58____ a second language.
I learned English for ten years starting from Grade Seven to graduation from university. After graduation, I felt that I should improve my language skills. 56. different 57. talking 58. as 59. takes 60. who##that
61. the 62. were asked 63. activities 64. to use 65. correctly
“as a second language”意为“作为第二外语”。故填as。
故填who/that。
故填the。
故填to use。

注意:
1. 所写短文的词数应为150 左右;
Paragraph 1:
When Edward came home, his father asked him what books he had bought.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
“My dear boy, I saw you give the money to the poor German family,” said the father.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
①由第一段首句内容“When Edward came home, his father asked him what books he had bought.(Edward回家后,他父亲问他买了什么书)”可知,第一段可描写Edward 向父亲解释为什么没有买书和刚刚的经历。
②由第二段首句内容“‘My dear boy, I saw you give the money to the poor German family,’ said the father.(“我亲爱的孩子,我看见你把钱给了那个可怜的德国家庭,”父亲说)”可知,第二段可描写父亲对Edward善心的支持,鼓励和奖赏。

[高分句型2]Oh, if only you had seen how glad they were to receive the money!(使用了“if only”虚拟语气句式)
[高分句型3]Be thus ever ready to help the poor and anybody who is in trouble and every year of your life will be to you a happy New Year.(由关系代词who引导定语从句)
