For our annual Best of the World List, we share our picks for the top museums, festivals, and other cultural spots and experiences worth a trip this year. These places show you traditions, communities and history - and inspire you to dig deeper.
National WWII Museum, New Orleans, the US
The National WWII Museum has several buildings, each covering different aspects of the war. Late last year, it opened the Liberation Pavilion, which explores the final years of the war. Visitors can step into re-creations of the secret building in Amsterdam where Anne Frank’s family lived and the salt mine where people uncovered treasured works of art hidden by the Nazis.
Liamuiga Natural Farms, St. Kitts
On Phillips Mountain, in St. Kitts, this coffee farm has recently started hosting three-course lunches for visitors. The Kellys and the Mikes, the two families run the farm, serve dishes using local produce and specialties including chips, saltfish and homemade coffee ice cream. “As you explore Liamuiga Natural Farms, you’re not just a guest,” says co-owner Tiffany Mike, “you’re a part of our work to protect the environment, uphold Kittiian traditions, and create a better future.”
Canadian Canoe Museum, Ontario, Canada
What is one of the best things about visiting the world’s largest collection of canoes (独木舟)? You can actually paddle (划船) up to it. The boat-shaped building, which has its opening in May, is located by the lakeside in Peterborough. After admiring the museum’s collection or taking a lesson in making paddles from Anishinaabe artists, visitors can start a group boat tour of Little Lake.
NorEste Trail, Puerto Rico
An hour’s drive east of San Juan, Puerto Rico’s first backpacking path, the NorEste Trail lets visitors “hike in a rainforest, be on a mountaintop in the clouds, and go to the beach, all in the same day,” El Yunque forest supervisor (主管) Keenan Adams said. Organizations like Love in Motion connect hikers with local culture through family-owned traditional food stands along the 40-mile journey.

Paul Town, born and raised in Eccleshill, has had an unbelievable journey from a local artist to one of the most recognized football painters in the UK. His love for football and art began at a young age. When he was four, he saw the floodlights of Park Avenue ground for the first time from the window of a bus going up Canterbury Avenue on a visit to his grandparents. The moment remained with him and by the time he was 10, it had developed into a firm belief that one day he would paint football grounds!
However, Paul’s journey to becoming a full-time artist took time. For many years, he worked as a builder, developed a construction business, and raised two daughters with his wife, Lindsay. While construction work provided a good living, Paul always felt that it was not his true calling. In his early forties, after receiving a box of acrylic paints from his parents, Paul picked up his brushes again, rediscovering his love for art.
His breakthrough came in 2013, when he sold a painting of the old Vetch Field ground to a Swansea City supporter at the League Cup Final at Wembley. From that moment, Paul’s career as a football artist took off. He has since been commissioned (委托) many times to paint Park Avenue, the club his grandfather supported. Park Avenue holds a special place in his heart, and he has painted it many times, capturing (刻画) its unique design and history.
Paul’s work is not just about football; it’s about capturing the spirit and history of the game. His paintings celebrate special moments, like matches and famous victories, bringing the excitement of football to life. It’s his love that has led him to travel the length and breadth of the country to explore grounds-and his paintings now hang in countless homes and club boardrooms.
4. What excited Paul’s interest in art when he was young?
A. A flood of football fans. B. The scene he saw on a bus.
C. A narrow crowded street. D. His grandparents’ support.
5. Which of the following best describes Paul’s journey to painting?
A. Successful. B. Unpleasant.
C Dangerous. D. Expectable.
6. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Wembley. B. Vetch Field.
C. Park Avenue. D. Swansea City.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To recommend a football club. B. To reflect on his love for football.
C. To remember a football player. D. To introduce a fine football artist.

For years, Canada has been one of the few wealthy countries without a national school food program. Instead, we have small, local programs that depend on piecemeal funding, and volunteers. That’s set to change. This past April, the government of Canada dedicated (拨付) $1 billion over five years to create the National School Food Program, which will offer meals to hundreds of thousands of kids annually starting this year.
Poor diet is a widespread issue in Canada, affecting children from all income (收入) levels. Many children eat too many processed foods like granola bars and candy, while not getting enough fruits and vegetables. Even my kids don’t eat well during the school day.
Providing healthy meals at school, where children spend much of their time, is a great way to improve their diets and reduce health problems. Students who use these programs get better grades and don’t miss school as much. For example, in one study of a morning meal program in the Toronto District School Board, students who ate a morning meal most days in a school week did better in areas like independent academic work, class participation and problem-solving.
Right now, school food programs are often aimed at needy kids. Some students who could benefit from school food programs may not participate because they don’t want to be seen as poor. But the study from the U. S. tells us that when all kids are invited to participate, the shame related to the program vanishes. I expect we will gradually see universal programs like that roll out.
Under a national policy, school food programs will continue to vary. Different places have different needs. The government could host a meeting of international experts to help us learn from the best school food programs around the world. If we’re going to put the money in, we need to make sure that the programs are the best they can be.
8. What is the problem facing Canada according to the text?
A. There are sudden rises in food prices.
B. Many families can’t afford housing costs.
C. There are no food programs for all students.
D. Teachers don’t support school food programs.
9. Why does the author mention the study in paragraph 3?
A. To show the benefits of school food programs.
B. To explain why children must eat a tasty meal.
C. To stress the students’ ability to solve problems.
D. To honour these respected teachers in the school.
10. What does the underlined word “vanishes” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Happens. B. Recovers. C. Advances. D. Disappears.
11. What is the author’s suggestion for the government about the programs?
A. Manage them based on the same needs.
B. Seek professional advice for the planning.
C. Encourage parents to put the money in.
D. Host a work conference on a daily basis.

The American burying beetle (葬甲) has seen its population notably fall due to habitat (栖息地) loss and a drop in wildlife species. Once widespread in 35 U. S. states and three Canadian provinces, it is now found only in small pockets in 10 states.
However, recent data show a positive change. In southwestern Nebraska’s Loess Canyons, the beetle population has increased over the last decade. This is the first regional growth since the beetle was listed as endangered in 1989. Researchers report this finding in the January Biological Conservation.
Caleb Roberts, a research ecologist, calls this success the best result in protecting nature. “The increase in beetle numbers is a hopeful sign for the health of the surrounding grassland ecosystems,” he says.
American burying beetles clean up dead bodies, which helps recycle nutrients (营养物) in the environment. The beetles need carcasses that weigh between 100 to 200 grams, roughly the size of a small rabbit, to feed themselves and their young. However, the number of suitable carcasses has dropped as many species that once provided food, such as prairie dogs and passenger pigeons, have disappeared.
From 2007 to 2019, researchers studied beetle populations in the Loess Canyons by using dead laboratory rats as bait. The data showed an increase of 17% in beetle numbers, from 168 to 196 beetles across all traps. The beetles strongly prefer Nebraska’s native grasslands, especially when these areas are free from invasive trees like eastern red cedar. If grasslands cover about 75% of the area, beetle populations are expected to double. However, when tree cover increases, beetle numbers drop a lot.
The positive trend in the Loess Canyons is due to efforts by over 100 private landowners who have worked to restore their grasslands by reintroducing fire to control cedar tree growth. This has helped reduce tree cover and created a more diverse habitat, which supports more wildlife, including the beetles.
12. What can be learned about American burying beetles?
A. They used to have a large population.
B. They caused damage to wildlife habitat.
C. They are the best hunter in North America.
D. They are found only in Canadian provinces.
13. What can we infer from paragraph 4?
A. Dead bodies harm natural environment.
B. The growth of grassland lies in the beetle.
C. It's good practice to get close to nature.
D. The beetles play a key role in ecosystems.
14. American burying beetles prefer to live __________.
A. in the rainforest B. in the grassland
C. on the farmland D. on the leafy island
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The Past Years See a Change in Weather
B. A Farm Was Built for the Burying Beetle
C. A Threatened Insect Is Making a Comeback
D. The Loess Canyons Are Home to All Beetles

The first part of the run went quickly, and I felt good with my pace, breathing in the fresh air with every step.
However, as the sun climbed higher in the sky, the temperature started to go up, and the run began to make me tired. My legs felt heavier with each step, and I started to feel sick. Suddenly, I felt myself losing balance. Before I realized it, I had fallen onto the hot ground.
Everything was spinning (旋转) around me, but I could see someone coming closer. A runner from the pack (队伍) was at my side. “Are you OK?” he asked with a voice of concern. Without waiting for an answer, he helped me up to my feet and guided me to the medical aid station.
The doctors quickly checked how I was feeling. They gave me water and a break to ease my thirst and tiredness from the heat. As I drank water and put cold pads on my head, I started to feel better. The stranger, Alex, stayed by my side, giving me much comfort.

His breakthrough came in 2013 when he sold a painting of the old Vetch Field ground to a Swansea City supporter at the League Cup Final at Wembley.
A. Successful. B. Unpleasant.
C. Dangerous. D. Expectable.
B 5. A 6. C 7. D

根据文章第一段中“For years, Canada has been one of the few wealthy countries without a national school food program. Instead, we have small, local programs that depend on piecemeal funding, and volunteers.(多年来,加拿大一直是少数几个没有全国性学校食品计划的富裕国家之一。相反,我们只有一些小型的地方性项目,依赖零星的资金和志愿者。)”可知,加拿大长期以来没有全国性的学校食品计划,只有小型、地方性的项目,即加拿大面临的问题是没有面向所有学生的食品计划。故选C。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第三段内容“Providing healthy meals at school, where children spend much of their time, is a great way to improve their diets and reduce health problems. Students who use these programs get better grades and don’t miss school as much. For example, in one study of a morning meal program in the Toronto District School Board, students who ate a morning meal most days in a school week did better in areas like independent academic work, class participation and problem-solving.(孩子们大部分时间都在学校度过,在学校提供健康的膳食是改善他们饮食、减少健康问题的好方法。 故选A。
根据划线单词所在语境“Some students who could benefit from school food programs may not participate because they don’t want to be seen as poor. But the study from the U. 【11题详解】
根据文章最后一段中“The government could host a meeting of international experts to help us learn from the best school food programs around the world.(政府可以召集国际专家开会,帮助我们借鉴世界各地最好的学校食品计划。)”

C They are the best hunter in North America.
D. The Loess Canyons Are Home to All Beetles

promise to do sth. 故填to reward。
故填who或that。

As the starting gun rang, I found myself among the sea of runners, my heart beating with a mix of excitement and anxiety. I had trained for months, preparing for the marathon that would test my limits and mark a big step in my sports journey.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I looked at Alex, really thankful. “Thank you,” I managed to say. “I wouldn’t have made it without you.” Alex just smiled, his eyes kind and encouraging. “We’re all in this together,” he replied. Feeling more determined, I chose to keep running the race, even if it meant finishing at a slower pace. Alex, who first thought of running without me, decided to stay with me. Together, we picked up our pace to the finish line, and our friendship started to build with each shared mile. The cheers from the crowd celebrating the crossing of the finish line grew louder and clearer.
In the last few minutes, we ran towards the finish line hand in hand. Though we didn’t cross the finish line ahead of the pack, we received the warmest applause, because we had won something far more valuable — a friendship that was built on the understanding of what it means to support one another in the face of difficulty.
