In Chinese history, there was a dynasty that lasted for almost 200 years but left behind few historical records. It wasn’t until the 1970s, with the discovery of several imperial (帝王的) tombs, that people began to uncover clues about the mysterious Western Xia Dynasty (1038-1227). In March 2024, the Western Xia Imperial Tombs were successfully included in China’s 2025 nomination (提名) for World Heritage status. Located near the Helan Mountain in Ningxia Hui autonomous region, the Western Xia Imperial Tombs feature earthen, pyramid-shaped structures (结构) and are often referred to as the “Oriental Pyramids”. The site covers an area of about 50 square kilometers and includes nine imperial tombs. Experts have found that, rather than being seen only as the cultural heritage of the Tangut (党项) people, the minority group who founded the Western Xia, the tombs reveal a rich mix of multicultural influences.u “The tombs are not only a tangible testament (实体证据) to the history of the Western Xia but also showcase the process of integration (融合) among various ethnic groups in ancient China,” said Du Jianlu, dean of the School of Ethnology and History at Ningxia University. For example, the overall layout (布局) of the Western Xia Imperial tombs shows the features of traditional Chinese architecture, focusing on a central axis (中轴线) and symmetry (对称). However, it also combines elements of Tangut customs, with the central axis slightly tilted (倾斜) to the west. Researchers also discovered roof decorations called chiwen (鸱吻) in the tombs. Chiwen, believed to have the power to spray water and bring rain, have been traditional roof decorations since the Han and Tang dynasties. These decorations have a dragon’s head and fish’s tail and are said to prevent fires. Experts believe this reflects the long-term interaction and integration between the Tangut and Han peoples, said Du. Beyond the tombs, Western Xia characters first discovered in the 19th century in Gansu province also amazed many people because they look similar to Chinese characters. “They were created in imitation (模仿) of Chinese characters,” explained Du. “They have similar strokes (笔画) and are also square-shaped characters.” Back then, both Western Xia characters and Chinese characters were still widely used in the country. A Western Xia scholar named Gule Maocai even finished editing a bilingual (双语的) dictionary in 1190 to promote understanding and learning between the Tangut and Han peoples, said Du. “This cultural identification (认同) has been a powerful intrinsic (内在的) force driving the formation and development of a sense of community for the Chinese nation,” Du added. Whose tombs are they? Due to a lack of historical records, most of the tomb owners cannot be confirmed. So far, tomb No 3, the largest among the nine, is believed to belong to Li Yuanhao, the founding emperor of the Western Xia Dynasty. Tomb No 7 has been proven to belong to Li Renxiao, the fifth emperor of the dynasty, according to Xinhua. The owners of the other imperial tombs are still unknown.  additional features of Western Xia characters shared by Professor Du ● The number of strokes is generally around 10. The simplest characters have no fewer than five strokes, and the most complex have no more than 20. ● The characters were mainly used by officials to write government documents, while most people could speak Tangut but could not read or write. 1. Passage 2 Why are today’s songs shorter than in the past? 词数 350  建议阅读时间  6分钟 From viral (走红的) TikTok tracks to Grammy-winning singles, it seems that pop music is getting shorter than ever. According to The Economist’s analysis of almost 1,200 No 1 hits, the average length of songs that top the Billboard Hot 100 has dropped by around 18 percent from 4 minutes and 22 seconds in 1990 to 3 minutes and 34 seconds in 2024. In the past, song length was affected by changes in listening technology. For much of the 20th century, songs were short because vinyl records (黑胶唱片) could hold only three to five minutes of music on each side. In the 1980s, the invention of CDs, which can hold up to 74 minutes of music, gave artists more freedom in songwriting. Songs stayed long through much of the 1990s, but in the digital age, they have become shorter again. One reason for this trend (趋势) is the rise of music streaming. On platforms like Spotify, artists are paid only if a listener plays the song for at least 30 seconds. This encourages them to write songs with short intros and catchy hooks (旋律) so listeners won’t skip to the next track. Artists also hope that short songs will be played more than once, and more replays mean more income. Social media is also pushing song length down. Video platforms like TikTok invite users to join dance challenges and make meme (表情包) videos using short parts of songs. “The attention span for any entertainment has changed a lot. People are interested for two minutes and then they want to switch to the next thing the next song, the next video, the next TikTok,” songwriter Erika Nuri Taylor told The Washington Post. Although short and catchy music is often seen as more commercially successful, it’s too simple to say that shorter is better. Joe Bennett, a professor at Berklee College of Music, says that since it’s now easier to access music production tools, many artists will explore different song lengths and styles. “Songwriters I talked to are aware of these economic factors but are also highly artistically motivated. They want to write the best record they can write and move somebody else’s heart,” Bennett told The Washington Post. 1. How has the average length of pop music changed over time? A. It has increased steadily since the 1900s. B. It varied with the adoption of vinyl records. C. It reached its highest point in the 1980s. D. It has shortened noticeably in recent decades. 2. How do streaming platforms influence song creation? A. By recommending songs with long hooks. B. By judging artists based on total song length. C. By paying artists only if songs are fully played. D. By rewarding songs that catch attention fast.  3. Why does the author quote Erika Nuri Taylor’s words? A. To show the impact of social media. B. To explain TikTok’s business model. C. To reveal the challenges faced by artists. D. To suggest that people’s tastes have changed. 4. What does Professor Bennett imply about today’s songwriters? A. They lack control over their works. B. They value creativity over passing trends. C. They balance artistic goals with market needs. D. They prefer digital tools to traditional methods. Passage 3 Concerns follow the food blind box trend In today’s world, where almost anything can be turned into a “blind box”, even surplus food has joined the trend (趋势). A leftover blind box contains food that is close to its expiration date (保质期) and is sold at a very low price. This kind of service began in 2015 on a Danish website called Too Good To Go, and it was introduced to China a few years later. The food usually includes bread, freshly made drinks, and fruit. Packaging it into blind boxes helps reduce food waste and has attracted young customers due to its low price. For example, a bread blind box that costs 15.9 yuan might include three to four types of bread, which would normally cost around 50 yuan. However, these blind boxes have also faced criticism. Many people have posted complaints online about food quality. “Although I didn’t expect it to be fresh, can you at least ensure food safety and hygiene (卫生)?” wrote one internet user. After picking up his order and storing it in the fridge, he found that the filling in the bread had turned sour by the next morning. In some cases, the bread was simply packed in plastic bags without any information like expiration dates, making it difficult to guarantee food safety. There are many platforms (平台) that offer this service. However, most orders must be picked up after 7 or 8 pm. If customers fail to pick up their orders on time, they cannot cancel them or get a refund (退款). Although leftover blind boxes can help reduce food waste and protect the environment, issues like not being able to choose the items, get refunds, or ensure food safety raise questions about whether they are truly worth buying. Companies and platforms offering the service should take social responsibility by providing more reliable products and customer support to ensure its long-term development. A regulatory system should also be set up to ensure food safety. Meanwhile, consumers need to make plans to eat the food immediately after purchase. 1. What do we know about leftover blind boxes? A. They were first sold in China in 2015. B. They include freshly made fruit salad. C. They must be ordered in physical stores. D. They offer low-priced, nearly expired food. 2. What is a major concern about leftover blind boxes? A. They are packaged too simply. B. They cause long wait times for refunds. C. They may fail to ensure basic food safety. D. They are less eco-friendly than expected. 3. What is the main focus of the last paragraph? A. The likely future of leftover blind boxes. B. Possible reasons for banning leftover blind boxes. C. Calls for better safety standards and public awareness. D. Potential ways to improve blind box marketing. A(历史连续性)、C(汉族地位)、D(党项族价值观)均非其核心观点。 1. 答案:C 解析:提到鸱吻 “believed to have the power to spray water and bring rain” 且 “said to prevent fires”,即具有防火和祈雨的作用,对应选项 C。A(象征权力)、B(致敬传统文化)、D(标记建造日期)均未提及。 1. 答案:B 解析:明确说明西夏文字 “created in imitation of Chinese characters”,且 “have similar strokes and are also square-shaped”,即形状和结构相似,故 B 正确。A(同时创造)、C(相互影响使用)、D(两族都学习)均不符合原文。 Passage 2 1. A(自 1900 年代稳步增长)、B(随黑胶唱片使用变化)、C(1980 年代达顶峰)均与原文不符。 1. A(推荐长旋律歌曲)、B(按总时长评判艺人)、C(仅在歌曲被完整播放时付费)均错误。 1. B(解释 TikTok 商业模式)、C(揭示艺人挑战)、D(暗示人们品味变化)均非核心目的。 1. 答案:C 解析:中 Bennett 提到, songwriters “aware of these economic factors but also highly artistically motivated”,即他们既关注市场因素,又追求艺术目标,平衡了艺术与市场需求,故 C 正确。A(缺乏作品控制权)、B(重视创造力而非潮流)、D(偏好数字工具而非传统方法)均不符合原文。 Passage 3 1. 答案:D 解析:明确定义剩菜盲盒为 “contains food that is close to its expiration date and is sold at a very low price”,即低价销售的临期食品,故 D 正确。A(2015 年首销于中国)错误,其 2015 年始于丹麦;B(包含新鲜水果沙拉)错误,文中仅提 “fruit”;C(必须在实体店订购)未提及。 1. A(包装过于简单)、B(退款等待时间长)、D(不如预期环保)均非核心问题。 1. A(剩菜盲盒可能的未来)、B(禁止剩菜盲盒的可能原因)、D(改进盲盒营销的潜在方法)均不符合。
