Passage 1 A young inheritor strives to preserve the legacy of Beijing silk figurines
北京绢人:赋绢纱以生命,施丝绸以灵性 词数 368 建议阅读时间 7分钟
Long-legged and fair-haired, the Barbie doll has become a symbol of children’s toys in the West. But more than 1,000 years ago, a doll that became popular in China was just as attractive.
Beijing silk figurines (北京绢人) are made from thin silk, gauze (纱罗) and damask (锦缎) and designed with detailed facial expressions. With their delicate craftsmanship (精致工艺) and cultural meaning, the art of making them was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2021.
Jiao Tianqi, 30, has spent six years learning and preserving the craft. “For many, these silk figurines are just art pieces, but to me, they are like my children,” Jiao expressed.
Creating a silk figurine has complex (复杂的) steps, including designing, painting, making clothes and props (道具). “Each step requires the greatest patience and love,” Jiao added.
Before making a figurine, the artist must design it and make sure the head-to-body ratio (比例) is correct. “According to aesthetic (美学的) standards, for a standing silk figurine, the head-to-body ratio is 1:7; for a seated position, it is 1:5,” Jiao said. But since most traditional silk figurines are 80 to 100 centimeters tall, every part is small. “A slight tremor (哆嗦) means starting over,” she said.
Because silk figurines often show noblewomen or characters from classic literature, artists try to express their cultural spirit.
“When making Wang Xifeng from Dream of the Red Chamber (《红楼梦》), we referenced the 1987 TV adaptation for her multiple hairpin (发簪) look to show her status as an important figure in the Jia family,” Jiao explained. “For Lin Daiyu, we reflected her identity as a dependent (受扶养者) through her gestures, such as lowering her head and frowning.” This requires reading to understand the culture behind the characters.
Since making silk figurines takes time and effort, few continue the craft. “Due to expensive materials, silk figurines are costly, and we often don’t know if they will sell,” Jiao said. “Nowadays, people prefer quick money, so out of 100 people who come to learn, only one or two persist (坚持) in carrying on the tradition.”
To address this, Jiao and her team work with people from all walks of life to raise awareness. They’re also exploring AI technology to make design and material analysis more accurate (准确的) and affordable.

Passage 2 Cultural factors affect work-from-home preferences
在家办公:家庭与职场的完美融合? 词数 315 建议阅读时间 6分钟
Although life has mostly returned to normal after the COVID-19 pandemic (疫情), working from home is still popular. According to a survey by Nicholas Bloom of Stanford University and his colleagues, people in English-speaking countries especially enjoy remote (远程的) work. The survey showed that, on average, college-educated Canadians work from home 1.9 days a week, Britons 1.8 days and Americans 1.6 days. In comparison, South Koreans work from home much less – only 0.5 days a week on average.
Bloom and his team say that cultural differences play a big role in these preferences (偏好). Whether a society values individual freedom or group cooperation can affect how much people accept remote work. Leaders in more individual-focused cultures are more comfortable giving workers freedom, and workers feel more relaxed working from home.
Remote work has been discussed a lot in recent years. Supporters say it helps people focus and avoid being disturbed (打扰) when they are doing difficult tasks.u Also, working from home can reduce housing problems, as people can live in places farther from the city, where housing is cheaper, according to The Economist.v Kory Kantenga from LinkedIn told CNBC that as the population is aging and our workforce is set to shrink, “employers are going to ... do more to attract employees, and offering flexible work might be the thing that they have to do.”
However, remote work also has downsides. Some people find it hard to separate work and home life, and others who enjoy talking to coworkers may feel lonely. Some workers may also be treated unfairly if they are not seen in the office, as noted by US News.
“The world of work today feels like an incomplete puzzle an intricate set of pieces that we know belong together but don’t yet have a picture to guide us,” Forbes reported. “We finally embrace that we don’t have all the answers and start building a new way forward.”
1. What does the survey by Bloom and his colleagues mainly show?
A. Asians tend to work longer hours each week.
B. Americans take the lead in remote work.
C. Westerners are more open to remote work.
D. Home offices are replacing real offices.
2. According to Bloom, what cultural factor affects preference for remote work?
A. Views on the value of time.
B. Beliefs about personal freedom.
C. Trust between leaders and staff.
D. Attitudes toward technological progress.
3. What does Kory Kantenga suggest about remote work?
A. It reduces office rental costs.
B. It improves emotional well-being.
C. It may be necessary to attract talent.
D. It guarantees increased productivity.
4. What does the Forbes quote imply?
A. Remote work will replace traditional office work.
B. Workers must wait for complete solutions.
C. Cooperation is the key to solving challenges.
D. The best work model is still being figured out.
Passage 3 Lotus roots can help make bone scaffolds
莲藕接骨“塑肉身”或将成现实 词数 349 建议阅读时间 6分钟
Growing up, you may have heard the ancient Chinese story of Nezha, a child brought back to life by his master using lotus roots. As it turns out, lotus roots may indeed have the power to heal (修复) bones and rebuild bodies.
Scientists at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), led by Wu Jun, have spent the past years researching this possibility. “Seen from material science and regenerative medicine (再生医学), lotus roots make a great natural material for making bone scaffolds (支架),” Wu told People’s Daily.
A bone scaffold provides a framework (框架) for bone cells to attach to and grow upon, aiding the healing process at the damaged site, said an Iranian study. With 3D-printing technology, different scaffolds can be designed for specific types of injuries.
The Guangzhou team carried out tests using mice. They made small holes in the skulls (颅骨) of the mice and put in lotus root scaffolds for some of them. After two months, the mice with the scaffolds experienced about 50 percent new bone growth, while the others showed almost none, Guangzhou Daily reported.
The holes inside lotus roots, known as air canals (气腔), played an important role in this process, Wu explained to Guangzhou Daily. Previous research found that these canals help move oxygen and nutrients to the lotus plant's underwater parts while helping the plant stay fixed in the mud. In bone repair, the canals give space for new blood vessels (血管) and nerves to grow.
At the same time, lotus root scaffolds are biocompatible (生物相容的) and have few side effects, Wu told China Daily. Traditional metal scaffolds often need another surgery to take them out after the bone heals, increasing both costs and health risks, according to a University of Toronto study. Lotus root scaffolds, however, don’t have this problem. They can be engineered to be as strong as natural bone and last just long enough for the bone to regrow. By the time the bone is fully healed, the scaffold will have been naturally absorbed (吸收) by the body.
Wu also plans to conduct more animal tests and explore using lotus root for wound coverings.
Breaking down lotus’ anatomy
Despite the name, lotus roots are not the actual roots of the lotus plant. Instead, they are the plant’s rhizomes (根状茎), a special type of stem (茎). Here is a closer look at the anatomy (构造) of the lotus plant.

Have you experienced fear when attempting something new? If so, how did you manage to overcome that fear?
II. reading
Like many kids, last summer I learned to ride a bike. Only I am in my 30s. When I was a child, I had no one to teach me. My mom never learned. My parents divorced (离婚) when I was 4, and in an attempt to perform parental responsibility, my father bought a bicycle for my brother and me to share.
My mom later remarried. When my brother and I were teased (取笑) because we were the only kids past 6 years old who still relied on training wheels, my stepdad removed them, but in doing that, I lost interest and trust in the activity. I was so scared – I was quite tall for my age at 7 and I was worried I’d fall off. I thought I was too old to learn too.
Not knowing how to ride didn’t bother me initially, until we moved to the suburbs (郊区), where bicycles were popular. On trips to the convenience store to buy candy with my friends, I was always the last to arrive, on foot. By then, I was 12 years old.
In my early 30s, I remember feeling envious as I watched children as young as 3 learn to balance on bikes. Among them were my neighbors, whom I would occasionally babysit. Then something changed. The fear within was still there, but something much stronger was taking over.
I decided to join a women’s bike-riding workshop. There, I stood in an urban park, determined to overcome my fear. Meeting women from diverse backgrounds, all seeking cycling skills for various reasons, strengthened my determination. Before long, I was riding confidently.
Embracing (拥抱) the joy of riding, I bought my own bike, not just for getting around but to reclaim lost time. It wasn’t simply a bike; it represented a chance I missed earlier. I completely engaged myself in the experience, enjoying the scenery and the breeze on my face.
Ultimately, buying a bike wasn’t just an investment (投资) in transportation; it was an investment in reconnecting with my past – a childhood memory long withheld.
