The North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is a long-term, large-scale, international avian (鸟类的) monitoring program to track the status and trends of North American bird populations. Each survey route is 24.5 miles (about 39.4 km) long with stops at 0.5-mile intervals. Surveys are conducted on a single day, usually during the first half of June. At each stop, a 3-minute point count of all birds seen and heard is conducted.
What are the requirements for participation?
● Access to suitable transportation to complete a survey.
● Good hearing and eyesight.
The ability to identify all breeding birds in the area by sight and sound. Knowledge of bird songs is extremely important because most birds counted on these surveys are singing males.
New BBS participants must also successfully complete the BBS Methodology Training Program before their data will be used in any BBS analyses.
Although scouting (侦察) the route before the run is usually a good idea, it is not a requirement, so becoming an observer requires that you commit to only one morning each June. The data are most useful when the same observer runs the route for several years, so we encourage people to make a commitment to run their routes for at least three consecutive (连续的) years, preferably longer. Most observers in New Jersey, except those with very rural routes find that the routes are best run on weekends to avoid too much noise from traffic, with Sunday usually being the best.
21. What is the purpose of the North American Breeding Bird Survey?
A. To help rare bird species breed.
B. To track the birds’ migration patterns.
C. To evaluate the status of birds.
D. To promote bird conservation.
22. What is a crucial requirement for individuals participating in the BBS?
A. Ability to drive a car.
B. Knowledge of bird songs.
C. Good hearing and smell.
D. Data analysis skills.
23. How long should observers commit to running their BBS routes?
A. One morning in June.
B. Several consecutive weekends.
C. At least half a year.
D. At least three years straight.

There is a paradox (悖论) to being 20 meters under the ocean. It is a place of calm and wonderment. I am immersed in a foreign world, with a new watery sky above me. There is a sense of peace as countless colorful fish swim past.
But the peacefulness is deceiving (欺骗性的). As a beginner diver, my mind often goes into overdrive. All that stands between me and a painful fate is the tank of oxygen (氧气) on my back.
I must remember complex hand signals, from those that communicate an animal sighting to the essential “I’m out of air” signal. I also need to remember things like my dive time and depth, and the location of my buddy.
Hence the paradox: scuba diving (水肺潜水) is at once liberating and calm, and a challenging comprehension test. Funnily enough, the latter – the learning aspect of it – makes the former more enjoyable.
When was the last time you learned a new skill? A truly new pursuit, not just an extension of your day-to-day? With busy lives and careers, the learning slows. It’s rare we try something truly novel.
Diving awakened me to the joy of learning new skills in adulthood. The activity is both exciting and has just enough danger to focus the mind; it forces you to wrestle with something unfamiliar and immerse yourself in the underwater world. It also forces you offline; there’s no checking emails 30 meters below the surface.
With more dives, there is always more to learn. New dive sites also bring their own challenges.
I’m lucky to have the time and money to take up new pursuits. Learning to dive isn’t cheap, but it’s worth every cent. One study found that people with hobbies had better health, more happiness and higher life satisfaction.
So why not consider trying something new – truly new? There is a magical quality to being a beginner again, learning slowly, occasionally regressing (倒退) and sometimes progressing. And if you can do all that 20 meters under the sea, surrounded by curious turtles and friendly manta rays (蝠鲼), all the better.
24. What does the author see as the paradox of scuba diving?
A. It is dangerous yet rewarding.
B. It is painful yet simple.
C. It is expensive yet boring.
D. It is peaceful yet challenging.
25. What does the underlined word “novel” in paragraph 5 most likely mean?
A. Necessary.
B. Unfamiliar.
C. Complex.
D. Cool.
26. What does the author imply about learning new skills?
A. It brings joy and satisfaction.
B. It is a waste of money and energy.
C. It creates more opportunities.
D. It improves one’s creativity.
27. What is the main purpose of the article?
A. To explain the benefits of scuba diving.
B. To encourage people to learn new skills.
C. To persuade people to try underwater sports.
D. To share the experience of learning swimming.

Do you feel nervous about speaking in public or when the phone rings? You’re not alone.
In a UK-first trial, Generation Z students (those born between mid-to-late 1990s and early 2010s) in Greater Manchester will be taught soft skills like time management and empathy (同理心) – the ability to understand the feelings of others. The program aims to reach around 10,000 Gen Zers by September, reported The Guardian. Most of the courses will be delivered online, but students will need to pass in-person communication tests at the end. There will also be sessions on detecting fake news, challenging discrimination and avoiding scams (诈骗).
The move comes following businesses across the UK raising concerns that Gen Zers, often called “digital natives”, lack crucial social skills needed to function effectively in the workplace. A common observation is that many Gen Zers have “telephobia (电话恐惧症)” and prefer texting, voice notes and social media over phone conversations, noted Newsweek.
Meanwhile, as Professor Sandeep Ranote at the University of Salford told The Guardian, a changing world has left Gen Zers lacking some key social skills. “Young people are going into a world with huge challenges,” she said. “I call it the five Cs: They lived through COVID-19, climate change, cost-of-living, cyberspace (网络空间) and conflict.”
For example, COVID-19 led to the rapid rise of remote work and learning. Shena Mistry, a career and leadership coach, told Forbes that young professionals might be excellent in a virtual presentation but struggle during an in-person meeting, finding it hard to maintain eye contact. “Others may find it challenging to give and receive feedback effectively, leading to misunderstandings within teams,” she explained.
Employers have also noted unprofessional language among Gen Z workers, reported the BBC. Caroline Goyder, a London-based speech consultant, said this is partly due to the informal speech patterns Gen Z has grown up with on the internet. “The upcoming generation has been told, ‘Be yourself!’ But there’s tension when they enter a corporate environment,” Michelle Ehrenreich from Boston University in the US added.
As Gen Z is expected to account for about 27 percent of the UK workforce in 2025, it is important to address the skill gap, said The Guardian. Since AI is taking over tasks that do not require strong interpersonal relationships, soft skills are more important than ever, and human workers need to focus more on the people skills crucial in leadership, customer relations and team dynamics, according to the US Data Corporation.
28. What is the main purpose of the new program being introduced in Greater Manchester?
A. To prepare students to fit into the workplace.
B. To help them pass a communication exam.
C. To teach them how to identify fake news.
D. To improve their time management skills.
29. According to Professor Sandeep Ranote, what causes Gen Z to lack social skills?
A. Overdependence on technology.
B. Exposure to global challenges.
C. An outdated education system.
D. Their fear of in-person interactions.
30. Why do Gen Z workers often use informal language in the workplace, according to the article?
A. They lack education in professional language.
B. They prioritize efficiency over formality.
C. They are influenced by online speech patterns.
D. They do not follow traditional corporate culture.
31. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Gen Z will soon become the main part of the UK workforce.
B. AI development will weaken human leadership abilities.
C. Social skills are now more vital for career success.
D. It’s urgent for Gen Z to learn AI-related knowledge.
D
Ugly dogs and other less attractive pets may not be the prettiest, yet they still pull at our heartstrings. What’s going on?
Every June in Petaluma, California, judges examine a lineup of funny faces, crooked teeth, big eyes and messy whiskers (胡须) to decide the winner of the World’s Ugliest Dog contest. The dogs competing for this questionable title often melt the hearts of animal lovers everywhere. Funny-looking pets are also common in viral internet content.
So why do we find odd-looking animals so appealing?
Evolution plays a role. According to Austrian zoologist Konrad Lorenz, human attraction to baby-like features, such as big eyes, large heads and soft bodies, is an evolutionary adaptation that helps ensure that adults care for their offspring, guaranteeing the survival of their species. These features were coined “baby schema” by Lorenz in 1943.
Animals such as blobfish, pugs (哈巴狗), and bulldogs all share these baby-like features that cause a caring response from humans. They trigger a natural instinct to nurture and protect.
There are other reasons we like “ugly-cute” animals. Some, like the blobfish or naked mole rat, live in extreme environments. Scientists study these animals to understand if their biology might provide insights that could lead to treatments for human health issues like cancer and heart disease.
But there are concerns with this trend. Veterinarians urge people not to choose flat-faced dogs because they have serious health problems. Pugs and French bulldogs are bred to have short noses and often experience trouble breathing, skin infections and eye issues. Many pugs make snoring and wheezing noises due to their blocked airways.
So while silly features such as big eyes and wrinkly faces may make us smile, we might want to rethink our love of “ugly-cute” pets.
32. What do we know about “baby schema”?
A. It refers to baby animal habits.
B. It ensures humans care for pets.
C. It helps adults recognize babies.
D. It arouses humans’ desire to protect.
33. Why do scientists study animals like the blobfish and naked mole rat?
A. To train them for tasks in extreme environments.
B. To discover potential human health treatments.
C. To investigate their unique health problems.
D. To determine if they can be pets for patients.
34. Why do veterinarians caution against choosing flat-faced dogs?
A. They require special diets.
B. They are costly to care for.
C. They are difficult to breed.
D. They have severe physical limitations.
35. Which of the following is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Why we love ugly-cute animals
B. How ugly-cute animals can help us
C. How to train ugly-cute animals
D. What ugly-cute animals have in common

When tiredness sets in during the day, most of us reach for a “pick-me-up” in the form of sugar or caffeine. Sure, both of these improve energy levels fast. But they also lack staying power and aren’t good for our overall health.
36 . Once you know what high-energy foods to eat and a few best practices on how to eat them, you’ll be on your way to feeling better in no time.
Start your high-energy diet with these four quick tips from dietitian (营养学家) Anna Kippen.
37
Research shows that people who eat breakfast perform better at tasks, eat fewer overall calories and miss fewer days of work and school than those who don’t. People who don’t eat breakfast are more likely to be less active in the morning.
Avoid refined carbs
Carbohydrates (碳水化合物) provide much-needed energy for your body. But highly refined (精制的) carbs, such as white bread, candy and sweet baked goods lead to a carb crash, making you feel sleepy. 38 . Try oatmeal, brown rice, blueberries or oranges, for starters.
Add lean protein to meals and snacks
Protein (蛋白质) takes longer to digest (消化). When you eat it with a carbohydrate, it slows the release of sugar into your bloodstream. You get continuous energy without the crash. For example, try adding a serving of nuts, nut butter (no sugar added), or yogurt to your meals or snacks.
Choose small, frequent meals to power your day
For some of us, when we skip meals (不吃饭) or eat too infrequently, our energy levels can fall so low that we may overeat at the next meal. 39 . For example, pair a lean protein, such as fish or chicken, with an unrefined carbohydrate, such as brown rice and the most important part, the vegetables!
40 . By making healthy choices in your diet and daily habits, you can enjoy steady vitality (活力). Follow these tips regularly to better manage your daily tasks.
A. Always have breakfast
B. Plan delicious breakfasts
C. Luckily, you have better choices for staying awake
D. Combine the tips above for success, and do them regularly
E. For lasting energy, eat unrefined carbs and fiber-rich foods
F. Staying energized throughout the day is vital for productivity and focus
G. Choosing the right snacks can be difficult when you are leading a busy life

I always prided myself on my sharp tongue and witty (妙趣横生的) retorts (反驳), whether in class debates or casual arguments. So when it came time to represent my school in the national debate series, I was naturally very confident. But this challenge would turn out to be one of my life’s most important lessons.
The run-up to the finals was a breeze (轻而易举的事) for my team. We were all good speakers who had the benefit of an experienced teacher who trained us well. But in the team, I was undoubtedly the most outstanding speaker. In each of the rounds that I debated in, I had always been selected as the best speaker. This meant that my confidence was at an all-time high by the time we found ourselves with one week left to train before the finals. I had no reason to even think that I would not be voted the overall best speaker for the debate series.
But then I began to grow arrogant. I looked down on my teammates’ pathetic rebuttals (辩驳) and poor debating style. I thought myself a natural debater being pulled down by their bad performance. In response, I became sloppy (不认真的). I even began missing practices, much to the panic of my teammates and the frustration (沮丧) of my teacher. They could only hope I’d pull through in the end as I proved irreplaceable.
The day of the finals came. I was nearly skipping to the venue, ready to finally show off my debating prowess (杰出的技能). But the reality was not something I could have ever imagined. Due to my repeated absences, our teamwork was so bad that even our school supporters were shamed into silence. There was a rift in the team. When it was my turn to conclude as speaker, an expectant hush fell over the hall. I was the one meant to win the prized title of Overall Best Speaker.

M: I stopped drinking coffee last week. I didn’t have a lot of it anyway.
W: Did you stop because you don’t like the taste?
M: No. It was because I was sleeping badly.
Text 2
M: Lucy, go on and tell me what happened then. I am curious about the ending of the film that just came out.
W: Nothing exciting. At the end of the film, the little girl was saved by a young man. It’s the same as the book.
Text 3
W: Oh, it’s broken. Jack is not going to be happy when he sees this. It’s his favorite glass. He’ll tell Mom.
M: Please, Kathy, can I borrow $10? I’ll buy him a new one. And I’ll clean up your room.
Text 4
W: Can I help you find something, sir?
M: Yes. I need a lock for my bike. I’m a photographer, and I often have to leave my bike for long periods of time to go take pictures.
Text 5
W: How terrible the weather is today! I much prefer hot, sunny days so I can go outside.
M: I actually quite like this type of rainy day. It’s cool. And we can stay in and relax.
Text 6
M: What’s the matter?
W: I’ve been having headaches.
M: How long have they been bothering you?
W: They started about three weeks ago. Oh, no, they must have been going on for about a month. At first, I thought I had the flu because I had a runny nose and a temperature.
M: I see. Do the headaches come on at a particular time?
W: They are usually worse in the morning, especially during the past two weeks. But they get better in the afternoon.
M: OK. Now let me check if there is anything seriously wrong.
Text 7
M: Hello, Sarah. Good to see you again. Welcome to the company.
W: Thank you. I know you asked me to come in a little later on my first day, but what time do I normally start work?
M: Well, the office opens at 8:30 am and the team starts with a meeting at 9 o’clock.
W: What do we do after the meeting?
M: We take a break at 10:30. My assistant Mia makes coffee for us all. Then it’s time to call customers and make sales.
W: That sounds good.
Text 8
W: Hi, Michael. You look so handsome in that red coat!
M: Thank you. I’m very glad to hear that.
W: I really like your coat. Where did you get it?
M: Well, I got it from the local department store where they have everything: shirts, skirts, jackets, coats … you name it.
W: Oh, I know the store. But the clothes there are too expensive. How much did the coat cost you?
M: Not as much as the salesman asked for it. He wanted $80.
W: So, how much did you pay in the end?
M: I got him to bring down the price to $55.
W: Wow! That’s pretty smart! In fact, I have been wanting to buy a cool hat in that store for a long time. It’s $40, which is kind of expensive. Can you help me get the price down?
M: I’m not sure, but I can try.
Text 9
M: Did you hear about the plan to build an amusement park at Discovery Bay?
W: No. Tell me about it.
M: Look. It’s all here in the newspaper.
W: Oh, no, this will really destroy the environment. The cars, the crowds ... It’s hard to imagine what will happen in the future.
M: Sure, there’ll be a bit more pollution and crowds, but tourists will be good for the economy. Don’t you think so?
W: I guess so, but Discovery Bay is such a peaceful place right now, and lots of families with small kids live there. I really like how it looks now.
M: Well, the locals should enjoy the new place as much as the tourists. Right now there are no interesting places here.
W: I don’t know. And it says here that they’re going to fill part of the bay. What will happen to the fish living there? They’ll be killed!
M: Well, you can’t stop progress.
W: That’s probably true, but I’ll still voice my concerns to the government on the internet.
Text 10
W: Samos is a Greek Island in the eastern Aegean Sea. From Athens, there are three boats that go there every week in the summer, two each week in the spring and fall, and one each week in the winter. The weather there is sunny and warm for most of the year. It rains a lot from November to January. This helps the island to stay green. Many tourists visit the island mainly from April through August. Mountain climbers from all over the world come to Samos to climb the forest-covered mountains. The villages up in the mountains have been well kept, and visitors can experience the simple life there. There are many beaches with pure white sand and calm, clear water in the south of the island. They are perfect for visitors to relax. There are many busy places on the eastern side of the island where people spend their holidays. They offer different types of activities and play plenty of loud music, so visitors can have parties and enjoy their time there.

23. D。由最后一段中的“... we encourage people to make a commitment to run their routes for at least three consecutive years ...”可知,观察员要保证能够连续三年在自己的路线上进行观察,故选D。
B
24. D。根据第1段“It is a place of calm and wonderment”和第4段“scuba diving is at once liberating and calm, and a challenging comprehension test”可知,作者认为水肺潜水既是一种平静的体验,又是一种具有挑战性的理解测试。
25. B。根据第5段“With busy lives and careers, the learning slows. It’s rare we try something truly novel”可知,作者提到“novel”一词时,指的是尝试一些真正陌生的事物。因此novel的意思和B选项“unfamiliar”含义贴近。

29. B。根据第四段教授Sandeep Ranote所说的话 “I call it the five Cs: They lived through COVID-19, climate change, cost-of-living, cyberspace and conflict”可知,Z世代经历了新冠疫情、气候变化、生活成本、网络空间和冲突等全球性挑战,是这些挑战导致他们缺乏一些关键的社交技能。
30. C。根据倒数第二段“Caroline Goyder ... said this is partly due to the informal speech patterns Gen Z has grown up with on the internet”可知,Z世代员工在工作场所经常使用非正式语言,部分原因是他们在成长过程中受互联网上非正式语言模式的影响。
31. C。最后一段提到“Since AI is taking over tasks that do not require strong interpersonal relationships, soft skills are more important than ever”,即由于人工智能正在接管不需要强大人际关系的任务,软技能比以往任何时候都更重要,人类员工需要更加注重在领导力、客户关系和团队动力等方面至关重要的人际交往技能。
D
32. D。由第四段中的“an evolutionary adaptation that helps ensure ... guaranteeing the survival of their species”和第五段中“They trigger a natural instinct to nurture and protect.”可知,外貌上婴儿特征能让成年人保护后代,确保种族的生存几率,其他动物类似的外貌特征也能激起人类的保护本能,因此幼儿图式可唤起人类的保护欲。
33. B。由第六段中“... insights that could lead to treatments for human health issues like cancer and heart disease”可知,科学研究的目的是探究这些动物的生理特性应用于医疗的可能性。

40. F。后文提到“you can enjoy steady vitality”,与F中的productivity and focus相呼应,故答案为F。

50. D。从第一段最后“... gave it all away to local food banks and non-profits”可知,Lauren种出了蔬菜之后将它们全部捐赠(donating)了出去。

第一节
Dear Kim,
I hope you’re doing well. I’m thrilled to hear that you’ll be visiting our school next week and participating in our Labor Week activities. Your presence will undoubtedly enrich our experience and offer a new perspective to our community.
Labor Week is designed to promote the value of hard work and cooperation among students. Throughout the week, we’ll engage in various practical tasks such as gardening, cooking and community service projects. These activities aim to teach us important life skills and instill a sense of responsibility and appreciation for those who work tirelessly behind the scenes. I believe it will be a great opportunity to share our culture with you and learn about British cuisine as well.
Wishing you a safe journey, and I will see you soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节
As I launched into my speech, everything suddenly went very wrong. I was hesitant in my explanations, realizing too late that I sounded incoherent; my speech did not follow logically from my team’s other points. The puzzled looks on the judges’ faces almost drove me to tears. I realized my overconfidence only too late. After I spoke my piece, the tears finally broke their banks and burned on my cheeks. I knew that we had lost the title.
Suddenly, a teammate grabbed my hand. She comforted me, saying that it was alright. Two other teammates came over to hug me. I continued sobbing the word “sorry” to them, feeling even worse now as they repaid my irresponsibility with kindness. When we were called to receive the prize for first runner-up, we went up together as a team and bravely lifted the award. I finally realized what it was like to be part of a team. On that day, I learned that no man is an island.
