Celebrating a birthday with family, friends, cake and presents are something most people enjoy. After not celebrating a birthday with a party or cake for more than 10 years, one Burleson teacher got a huge surprise last week.
Burleson High School English teacher Kyle Simpler said he came into his classroom on Feb.11, to see streamers (装饰彩纸条) , cake and presents for his 59th birthday from his English class.
“I had no idea they would do something like that,” Simpler said. “It was carefully planned.” Simpler said while talking to his students one day, he made an off-hand comment about how he hasn’t had a birthday party or a cake in over 10 years. “They found out that my birthday was coming up,” Simpler said. “They made the cake and even put a picture of a cat on it because I’m always talking about how much I love cats.”
As Simpler entered his classroom, some students took a video of his reaction (反应) to the party and posted it online. As the weekend went on, the video became a hit as millions of people around the world tuned in (观看). Simpler said people from England, Australia and the Netherlands were messaging him to wish him happy birthday.
“Everyone has a cake for their birthday, and I thought we have to do this,” BHS senior Karlie Moran said, “We love him. This is a college-level class and he made it less stressful with his personality.” BHS Principal Wayne Leek said the school is lucky to have Simpler as a teacher. “Mr. Simple r is a teacher that really cares about his students and their success,” Leek said. “His students know that he not only holds high expectations for all but is always there to support each and every one of them. He is truly a special teacher.”

When people are trapped under debris (碎片) without access to fresh air or water, timing is very important. In disasters such as earthquakes and floods, survivors and rescue teams often have to deal with difficult situations without the help of communications networks. Disaster relief technology can find survivors just in time.
When hazards get out of control, they become disasters that can turn an otherwise peaceful location into something like a war area. While military leaders use the latest technology for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (情报、监视和侦察) , the same technology can be applied to disaster relief.
Global Hawk, for example, provides views of disaster areas without putting people at unnecessary risk. This autonomous aircraft (自主飞行器) can fly high for long hours without a pilot. It is equipped with cameras that can “see” through clouds and bad weather, day and night. Furthermore, Global Hawk can also provide communications support. After a big earthquake in Haiti in 2010, Global Hawk surveilled damaged airports to find safe landing sites for relief aircraft. Rescue workers also used videos from Global Hawk observations to compare before and after images of the area to identify areas of need and plan clear ways to get to those locations.
Additionally, a new aircraft called Firebird can provide similar help. It’s a mid-level aircraft in terms of altitude, which is inexpensive and flexible. Pilots can fly this aircraft and then quickly turn it into an un-piloted aircraft, for example, in order to stay in the air longer and to go near dangerous areas to gather information.
Rescue workers continue to use traditional tools such as listening devices, cameras and dogs that are trained to find survivors. And over time, they’re also adding new disaster relief technology to their toolkits. With each new technology being used, lives are saved.
8. What does the underlined word “hazards” in paragraph 2mean?
A. Dangerous situations. B. Modern technologies.
C. Limited supplies. D. Hidden traps.
9. What is the main purpose of Global Hawk in disaster relief?
A. To clear away debris. B. To produce fresh water.
C. To provide a bird’s-eye view. D. To conduct ground-based searches.
10. How does the author prove the usefulness of Global Hawk?
A. By listing its detailed fact file.
B. By comparing it with other aircraft.
C. By introducing the science behind it.
D. By giving an example of its application.
11. What is special about Firebird?
A. It is the fastest aircraft.
B. It is the cheapest aircraft.
C. It allows both low and high altitude flights.
D. It allows both piloted and unmanned flights.
D
We all do our best to have popping-green lawns (草坪) that are the talk of the homeowners association (HOA), but nature will be nature. And sometimes nature takes hold and causes your lawn to turn yellow or brown. While a yellowing or browning lawn is generally repairable, it could take weeks or months for your yard to return to its usual color. So, why not paint it?
Yes, you can paint your yard but don’t run out to buy a can of green paint yet. You’ll need special grass paint. It is a non-toxic pigment (无毒的颜料) that gives your browning or yellowing grass a pop of color while you wait for its natural green to return. Because it’s nontoxic and made from natural materials, it presents no risk to insects, wild animals, or our waterways.
The primary benefit of using grass paint is its immediate regreening effect. No matter how well you care for your lawn, you’re going to run into a handful of problems here and there. Having the ability to bring back its color immediately eases the stress of dealing with lawn problems. It can also help save costs. Sometimes, color problems can take months to fix, and dealing with a browning lawn may be too much to manage for a very long period. In many cases, homeowners will give in and pay to have sod (草皮) placed. With grass paint, you can bring back that popping-green color while waiting for its natural color to return — all for the cost of a bottle of grass paint.
However, if you’ re using grass paint all year round, there is an underlying problem you must pay attention to. Your grass might be close to dying due to water shortage, malnutrition, infestation (营养不良,虫害), or diseases. Continuing to put on grass paint does nothing but cover up the problem until it turns into a big problem.
12. What is the purpose of grass paint?
A. To protect wild grassland.
B. To create artwork with grass.
C. To improve the look of lawns.
D. To beautify the inner space of the house.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The cost of making grass paint.
B The process of making grass paint.
C. The advantages of using grass paint.
D. The dos and don’ts of using grass paint.
14. What might be a result of using grass paint all year round?
A. Health problems with grass might not be recognized in time.
B. Large areas of land might be seriously polluted.
C. Insects might not survive on lawns like this.
D. Water shortage might be worsened.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. What Is Grass Paint? B. Is Grass Paint Safe to Use?
C. Is It Easy to Paint Your Grass? D. How Long does Grass Paint Last?

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Why are we going back to the bank?” I asked my mother. The five of us — my mother, three brothers and I — had just returned home. We mailed letters, did some shopping and got some money from the bank. Staying in the car with my younger brothers all morning was terrible anyway, and besides that, it was a hot day and the car’s seats were old and uncomfortable. Our little house, with the white bed covers hanging from the clothesline in the backyard, was a welcomed sight.
As a reward for good behavior all morning, my mother had promised to take us to our aunt’s pool for an afternoon of swimming. My brothers and I had got out of the old car toward the home when we were brought to a stop by our mother’s voice. “Everyone back in the car,” she said. “We are going back to the bank.”
I had only two things on my twelve-year-old mind — lunch and swimming. Although my aunt and uncle lived down the street, it was unusual for us to be invited over for a swim. Since pools in this part of the country were uncommon, this was an opportunity (机会) not to be missed. I couldn’t wait to get in the water to work on what I called my water ballet moves and maybe build up enough courage to div e off the diving board. All we had to do was eat a quick sandwich, put on our swimsuits and go. And now, we had to get back in the car?
Going back to the bank could take at least two hours. I asked my mother, “Can’t we go back tomorrow? We want to go swimming.” My mother replied calmly, “We are going back to the bank.” A couple of hours later, my mother parked the car in front of the bank. The bank was a two-story building. I stayed close to my mother’s side as we walked toward the tellers’ (出纳员的) windows. My mother looked from one teller to the next until she saw the teller at the end of the long counter (柜台) .
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡上的相应位置作答。
“You gave me one hundred dollars too much,” my mother said.

On our way home, I said to my mother, “I’m proud of you, mom.”

B By comparing it with other aircraft.
C. By introducing the science behind it.
D. By giving an example of its application.
11. What is special about Firebird?
A. It is the fastest aircraft.

12 What is the purpose of grass paint?
A. To protect wild grassland.
B. To create artwork with grass.
C. To improve the look of lawns.
D. To beautify the inner space of the house.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The cost of making grass paint.
B. The process of making grass paint.

【答案】
Last Friday, our school’s sketching event in the nearby park was a big success. On arrival, students scattered with sketchbooks: some focused on blooming roses, others on the lake’s ripples or kids chasing butterflies. Art teachers wandered around, offering tips on shading, while classmates swapped ideas, giggling as they adjusted strokes.
This event mattered beyond fun. It sharpened our drawing skills, let us soak in nature’s beauty, and strengthened friendships. When we later displayed our works, the pride was tangible. It was a day that blended learning, joy, and connection — leaving warm, lasting memories for everyone.

第二节(满分25分)

【答案】
“You gave me one hundred dollars too much,” my mother said. Her voice was firm yet polite, and I could see the teller’s eyes widen in surprise. He quickly checked the transaction records and then, with a sheepish smile, apologized and took back the extra money. My mother’s honesty and integrity in that moment left a deep impression on me. She had chosen to return the money, even though it meant sacrificing our precious swimming time. I realized then that doing the right thing was more important than any leisure activity.
On our way home, I said to my mother, “I’m proud of you, mom.” She turned to me with a warm smile, her eyes reflecting a sense of satisfaction. “It’s important to be honest, no matter what,” she said gently. “Money can be replaced, but integrity is priceless.” I nodded, understanding the lesson she had just taught me. Although we missed our swim that day, I felt a sense of pride and contentment knowing that my mother had acted with such honor. Her actions had shown me the true meaning of honesty and had set an example for me to follow in my own life.
