A student from Hangzhou shares his passion for math
丘成桐“数学领军计划”看重学生的哪些特质?
The 2024 Yau Mathematical Sciences Leaders Program (丘成桐数学科学领军人才培养计划) at Tsinghua University (THU) recently released (公布) its list of candidates, with Cui Xingjian, 16, from Hangzhou Xuejun High School, being one of them.
Started in 2021 at THU’s Qiuzhen College, the program aims to cultivate leading talents in mathematics, selecting no more than 100 grade 9-12 students annually. Students can bypass the national college entrance exam if they are admitted (录取).
The candidates are generally regarded as young geniuses (天才). “However, I prefer to say my success is the result of my passion for math rather than talent,” said Cui.
Cui’s journey into the world of math began after coming across an old algebra (代数) book in his school’s library by chance. He dived into its pages and found a universe of equations (等式) that seemed to speak to him.
Cui, by all means, did not find studying algebra easy. The abstract nature of the subject sometimes left him puzzled, but his determination drove him forward. “Late nights were spent wrestling with (努力解决) variables and equations, but the breakthroughs (突破) were all the sweeter,” said Cui.
Cui’s secret weapon (武器) was his ability to visualize (形象化) problems. “I made mind maps, transforming abstract symbols into tangible (有形的) shapes and patterns,” shared Cui. Through this, he was able to turn complex (复杂的) algebraic expressions into an interesting mental playground.
In Cui’s academic journey, his math teacher, Xiao Yijun, observed in him a unique mix of self-motivation and well-rounded development. Xiao noted Cui always has a solid plan, like a roadmap for his math study, with an ability to arrange tasks in a perfect manner. Beyond the confines (限制) of numbers, Cui’s interests extend into other areas, like humanities (人文学科) and sports, making him a well-rounded student.
“Some students think math competitions offer a shortcut (捷径) to getting into top universities,” said Xiao. However, Xiao suggested students prioritize (优先考虑) genuine interest in math over the pursuit of competitive success. “During preparation for a math competition, students should see math as a tool for cultivating broad and rigorous (严谨的) thinking and never neglect (忽略) their own well-rounded development,” said Xiao.

Limited by fixed schedules and the same materials, traditional classrooms often struggle to address individual learning styles and frequently fail to satisfy different needs for learning. Now, educational tools powered by AI help analyze students’ strengths and weaknesses in real time, enabling educators to offer more personalized guidance.
A 2023 UNESCO report revealed that schools adopting AI instructors saw a 34% improvement in math scores globally, signaling the possibility of the technology to bridge educational gaps and offer better learning resources. Initial research in the countryside of India showed a 40% reduction in dropout rates, with teachers reporting improved ability to address individual struggles.
Researchers at Stanford University worked on a project and developed an AI system that tracks eye movements and response time during online learning. By studying data from 50,000 students, the AI system identifies the confusion invisible to human teachers. For instance, it discovers students’ brief hesitation in solving equations (方程), and offers targeted instruction. “It’s not about replacing teachers but giving them superhuman insight,” said the project leader, Dr. Emily Zhou.
Meanwhile, a 2024 Cambridge study explored generative (生成的) AI’s role in lesson planning. Teachers input teaching goals, and the AI produces content — calibrating vocabulary for non-native speakers or creating personalized physics exercises. In a survey, 78% of educators reported saving five or more hours weekly. However, 62% expressed concerns about overdependence on AI-generated materials that lack sensitivity culturally. Researchers are now training models to recognize regional languages and traditions, aiming to balance educational gaps within different cultures.
Experts predict AI could complete 30% of administrative (行政的) tasks by 2026, freeing teachers for teaching and guiding students. Challenges include data privacy and equal access to technology. As Dr. Zhou noted, “The goal isn’t perfect algorithms (算法) or replacing humans but improving human potential through thoughtful tech partnerships.”
8.What was a key-finding of the Stanford University study?
A.AI could track students’ response time. B.AI could reduce students’ dropout rates.
C.AI could recognize students’ confusion. D.AI could improve students’ math scores.
9.What does the underlined word “calibrating” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Adjusting accurately. B.Selecting accidentally.
C.Replacing completely. D.Memorizing carefully.
10.Why are many people worried about AI-generated materials?
A.They lack true emotions. B.They rely on former models.
C.They contain regional dialects. D.They ignore cultural differences.
11.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Development of AI Technology B.The Risks of AI in Modern Education
C.What Challenges AI Brings to Humans D.How AI Changes Teaching and Learning

As a middle school adviser, I know firsthand how unkind kids can be to each other — but today, I saw something that reminded me just how friendly they really are.
It was “College Day” at our school, when students wear gear from colleges and universities, which were designed according to their height and weight. And we focus on the importance of pursuing education after high school. At lunch, we hosted a fun question-and-answer activity with buzzers (蜂鸣抢答器), prizes, and questions about education funds, on-the-job training programs, and post-secondary options. Six students came up at a time to play.
During one round, two of the students who participated were from our specialized classroom. These students are amazing — strong-minded, determined, and full of heart. As the game began, I got ready to step in if they needed support or if they felt left out.
The first question went to one of the general education students. Then, on the second question, Frank, one of our students from the specialized class, rang in first. Before I could even help, a few classmates quietly came up behind him and whispered the answer in his ear. He repeated it with excitement, and when I announced it was correct, the crowd erupted in cheers — louder than I’d heard all day.
It happened again with the next question. This time, the crowd began cheering Frank’s name, and he lit up with pride. More students from the class were invited up to play, and the cheering only grew louder. The whole room was filled with delight — students supporting one another, showing joy, unity, and genuine kindness.
We often talk about the challenges this generation faces, but I saw something powerful today. These kids are good. They’re tender-hearted. They lift each other up. And in that moment, they reminded me that the future is in very good hands.
12.What does the word “gear” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.Caps. B.Glasses. C.watches. D.Uniforms.
13.What did the author do at the beginning of the game?
A.He prepared to ring the buzzer first.
B.He announced the answer instantly.
C.He planned to assist students in need.
D.He left students behind without hesitation.
14.What made Frank proud?
A.His kindness to others. B.Peers’ praise and shouts.
C.His confidence in himself. D.Peers’ support and cheers.
15.What message does the text convey about the kids?
A.They are ambitious. B.They are stressful.
C.They are hopeful. D.They are grateful.

However, they faced a significant challenge. Some students were not interested in reading, especially during the winter when they preferred to stay indoors and play video games.
“We need to think of something that will really grab their attention,” Tom said, scratching his head.
“How about a treasure hunt game?” Rose suggested. “We can hide clues in books, and each clue leads to the next. The final clue will reveal the location of a special prize.”
“Yes, we will create a treasure hunt game where clues are hidden in books,” said Tom.
They hoped this would spark the students’ curiosity and encourage them to explore the library.
The day of the Reading Festival arrived, and the school was decorated with colorful banners and posters promoting the joy of reading. Tom introduced the treasure hunt to the students, encouraging, “Remember, the more you read, the more clues you’ll find!”

His co-worker, Rose, a dedicated librarian, shared his enthusiasm. They planned to organize a series of activities to promote reading and learning among the students.
“Rose, what do you think about adding a book exchange to the festival?” Tom asked, his eyes sparkling with excitement.
“That’s a great idea, Tom!” Rose replied. “We can also have a storytelling session and a quiz competition.”
“Let’s see who can uncover the mystery of the special prize!” Rose added, her voice filled with excitement.
The book exchange and storytelling session attracted many students, but the treasure hunt became the highlight.

【答案】 Lily was one of those who were interested in the treasure hunt. She decided to give it a try. As she read the books, she discovered a world of knowledge and imagination she had never known before. Each book she read not only brought her closer to the prize but also enriched her mind and expanded her horizons. However, the competition was fierce. She had to take her time to read and understand each book. Her patience and dedication paid off, and she was the first to reach the final clue.
Tom and Rose awarded her the prize in front of the entire school. Holding a golden bookmark and a set of classic novels, Lily beamed with pride. “Reading opens doors to endless adventures,” she shared, her voice trembling with excitement. The students cheered, their earlier reluctance replaced by curiosity. Tom and Rose exchanged a satisfied glance — their plan had worked. By blending fun with learning, they had ignited a passion for books in many hearts. The festival ended, but the love for reading it sparked would last far beyond that winter day.
