Hawaii is ready to hike a tax imposed (on travelers staying in hotels, vacation
rentals and other short-term accommodations and apply the new money for programs to cope
with a warming planet. This will raise the total tax rate to nearly 19%,with the state and
counties also imposing a combined 4.712%tax.The measure is expected to generate $100
million.
The funds will be used for projects like adding sand to broken beaches, protecting coral
reefs,and removing wildfire-fueling grasses.Josh Green,who supports the bill,believes that
the tax will help prevent future disasters like the Maui wildfire, which caused a 13 billion
loss and claimed 102 lives. He argues that Hawaii's 10 million annual visitors should
contribute to protecting the environment.
Jerry Gibson, president of the Hawaii Hotel Alliance, said the hotel industry was pleased
Hawaii didn't adopt a higher increase that was initially suggested."I don't think that there's
anybody in the tourism industry that says,'Well, let's go out and tax more.'No one wants
to see that,"Gibson said."But our home needs money to beautify Hawaii's environment, and
it will be worth it..”
Hawaii has long struggled to pay for the vast environmental and conservation needs.
Hawaii had previously considered requiring tourists to pay for a license to visit it,but this idea
was rejected.Boosting this tax is their compromise (solution, one made more urgent by
the Maui wildfires.
There is a $561 million shortfall in Hawaii's conservation funding needs. The tax
increase won't fully cover the gap,but Hawaii plans to issue bonds to ensure sufficient funds.
Kawika Riley,an officer of Hawaii, pointed to the Hawaiian saying,"A stranger only for a
day,"to explain the new tax.It means that a visitor should help with the work after the first
day of being a guest."Nobody is saying that literally our visitors have to come here and start
working for us.But what we are saying is that it's crucial to be part of the solution,Riley
said.

Sleep is one of the most fundamental building blocks of life. All animals sleep, from dogs
to humans. It has long been known that sleep also plays a significant role in physical and
emotional health. But nobody might think that memory and learning are acquired while one is
sleeping. However,in fact, the researchers from the University of South Australia have
recently found that just the reverse is true.
The researchers conducted an experiment with 35 native English speakers. These 35
participants were in the process of learning a mini-language called Mini Pinyan.Half of the
students learned the language in the morning and then went on with their days, while the
other half studied in the evening and then slept at the lab so that the researchers could record
their brainwaves. Both groups were tested on their knowledge of Mini Pinyan in the morning,
and the group that had slept soon after they studied performed significantly better than those
who had not.
According to previous research, there are two phases that the brain cycles through when
sleeping. The first is called REM sleep.During this phase, which usually takes place about an
hour and a half after a person has fallen asleep, brain activity peaks and shows levels similar
to when that person is awake. This is when dreams occur. In non-REM sleep, brain activity is
low.
"Sleep is not just restful;it's an active, transformative state for the brain,"Dr.Scott
Cousins,a researcher of the study, said. They found that the improvements were linked to
two types of brainwaves-slow oscillations and sleep spindles, which become coupled during
non-REM sleep. The coupling of these brainwaves appears to help the transfer of information
from the hippocampus to the cortex(大脑皮层),which is where long-term memory is stored.
This is no doubt good news for anyone who wants to study a foreign language. What's
more, the implications of this study could also help improve the lives of those with language-
related impairments. Now there is one more reason to get a good night's sleep

A.Absence of dreams.

Confidence is essentially a belief in your own abilities, qualities, and judgment.
Cultivating confidence is similar to constructing a house.A solid foundation must be laid
first, and then the rest of the structure can be built upon it.It is a gradual process that
demands time and effort, particularly if you haven't had many chances to demonstrate your
skills in the past. However,it is something that everyone can do!36
Think positively about yourself and your skills.37 Everyone experiences days when
staying positive is tough, but challenge yourself to remember one good thing about yourself
each morning until it becomes routine.
38 What happens when you do things that you are good at?Your strengths become
even stronger, which helps improve your belief in yourself.Taking this approach also has
another benefit:It can contribute to a more satisfying life experience.
Spend time with positive people. The people around you greatly impact how you feel
about yourself.39 If,however, you're interacting with people who can cheer others on
and support one another, you'll feel much better. So focus on creating healthier relationships
with the positive people in your life.
Take care of yourself.Focusing on you and what you need sometimes feel like it's
selfish, but it's not!40 Self-care can help you take care of others and also boost your self-
confidence.Easy ways to start include taking a break when you're overwhelmed, wearing

Emma and Sophia were the kind of friends who seemed to share a single mind most of the
time, always there for each other through thick and thin. One sunny day, they decided to take
on a project that would benefit their community-creating an environmental-awareness video.
They were both passionate about the environment and believed that a well-made video
could inspire their neighbors to take more eco-friendly actions. At first, the project seemed
full of promise. They spent days brainstorming ideas, researching environmental issues
relevant to their area, and looking for locations for filming. However,as they delved (
deeper into the actual planning of the video, they encountered a major roadblock.
The disagreement started when it came to the style of the video.Emma, who had a gift
for drama and storytelling,wanted to create a narrative-driven video.She created a story
about a family gradually changing their habits to become more environmentally conscious(
环保意识的).She believed that a relatable story would touch people's heartstrings and make
them more likely to pay attention.Sophia,on the other hand, was more data-oriented
据为导向的).She thought that a documentary--style video, filled with hard facts and statistics
about local pollution and waste, would be more effective in getting the message across. She
argued that people needed to be shocked into action by the realities.
As the discussion heated up,their once-harmonious relationship became strained.Their
voices rose, and the air between them grew tense. They both felt strongly about their ideas
and were unwilling to change.Eventually, they parted ways, each frustrated and disappointed
in the other.
For the next few days,Emma and Sophia went about their lives feeling a sense of
emptiness.Emma found herself constantly thinking about the project and Sophia. She missed
their long conversations and the excitement they had at the beginning. She started to question
whether her idea was really the only way.Similarly,Sophia was also feeling down. She
missed Emma's creativity and the way they used to bounce ideas off each other.

1.续写词数应为150个左右:
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
It was Emma's mother who first noticed the change in her daughter.

参考范文:
It was Emmas mother who first noticed the change in her daughter. One evening, Emma sat on the sofa, staring at the floor with her face filled with frustration. Sensing her upset, her mother sat beside her and softly asked what was wrong. With a heavy sigh, Emma poured out the entire story—her argument with Sophia, their disagreement over the project, and how neither of them was willing to give in. Her mother listened patiently, then smiled and said, “Friends dont always agree, but that doesnt mean they cant work together. Try to put yourself in Sophias shoes—maybe theres a middle path.”
Emma took her mothers advice. The next day, she visited Sophia, awkward at first but soon realizing they shared the same thought—combining facts with storytelling. With their friendship restored, they created a video that opened with striking environmental statistics, followed by a fictional familys changing habits. As they worked, Emma felt excitement and gratitude, while Sophia discovered the strength in their differences. Their teamwork not only strengthened their friendship but also taught them the value of finding a balance, making their project meaningful and impactful.
