During the Song Dynasty, there was an officer (官员) named Zhang Guaiya who worked in Chongyang County (县). Stealing (偷窃)was common then—even the county’s vault (金库) was stolen.
One day, Zhang saw a man come out of the vault in a hurry. Zhang stopped him and asked the guards (护卫) to search him. They found a copper coin (铜币) in his headband (头巾). Zhang asked him how much money he had stolen. The man said he didn’t steal anything else.
Zhang didn’t believe him and ordered the guards to beat him. The man didn’t give in and said, “I only stole a copper coin. You can’t beat me just because of that!” Zhang was very angry and said, “If you steal a copper coin every day, there will be a thousand copper coins after a thousand days. Constant dripping wears away a stone (水滴石穿).”
“Constant dripping wears away a stone.” This saying tells us that small things done over time can make a big difference. It reminds us not to do small bad things. Nobody likes to do chores, especially kids. How can you make your kids get into a good habit of doing their chores? Try making chores fun!
Play some music. Music makes everything seem like a party, doesn’t it? Play your kids’ favorite music and let them dance around while they are doing their chores.
Make it a treasure hunt (寻宝). It’s the most interesting thing when you ask your kids to clean the house. Let them know that you hide (隐藏) a $5 bill someplace. If they find it, they can keep it.
Change often. If your kids keep doing the same chores for months, they may feel bored. Teaching them a new task (任务) is fun for both you and the kids. They will feel more grown up when they get a new task.

When I was 15, I said to my class that I was going to write my own books. All the students nearly fell out of their chairs, laughing at me. “Don’t be silly. Only geniuses (天才) can become writers. And you are getting a D this term,” they said. I was deeply hurt and I couldn’t help crying. That night I wrote a short, sad poem about my broken dream and mailed it to Weekly Newspaper.
To my surprise they published (发表) it, and sent me two dollars. I was a paid writer! I showed the newspaper to my classmates. They laughed again. “Just luck,” they said. However, I had tasted the joy of success because my first poem was published.
From then on, I never talked about my writing dream to my classmates again. I just kept on my dream by myself and kept writing. Later, I wrote a book about how I understood and felt about my life. It took me nine months to finish it. I chose a publisher and mailed my book.
A month later, I received a letter, with an invitation for publishing the book. It came out in 15 languages and became a bestseller (畅销书). People often ask if I’m studying in a top college. The answer is no. I’m not a genius and I’m not talented. I just write. To all those who dream of being a writer, I should say, “Yes, you can be writers. Always keep writing!”

Show your love to the old. You can do some volunteer work at the old people’s homes. Some old people can’t see clearly and they would like you to read to them. No matter what small things you do, you can make them feel loved.
Set up a reading project with your friends. Share your favorite books with them. Either a book or an article can spark a lively (热烈的) discussion and your further thinking. The project is also a good way to find new friends with similar hobbies.

How time flies! This is the end of the term. Looking back, joining the English speech contest was the most meaningful experience for me.
When my teacher encouraged me to participate, I was nervous but decided to try. Every day after school, I practiced in front of a mirror, recorded my voice, and asked classmates for advice. However, my hands still shook badly when holding the microphone on stage. Taking a deep breath, I focused on my teacher’s smiling face in the audience. Gradually, my voice became steady and clear.
Though I didn’t win any prize, this experience taught me that true growth comes from stepping out of comfort zones. Now I understand that courage isn’t the absence of fear, but the will to overcome it. This lesson will guide me through future challenges.
