Most people are afraid of snakes. They may think snakes are dangerous and ugly. With more and more rain falling and the hot weather, it’s time for snakes to be active. Living in the city, it never crosses your mind that we might meet them face to face.
There are more than 2,000 kinds of snakes on the earth. Most of them live in mountains or forests, and in cities sometimes we can find them in grass or other dark places. Snakes can’t walk or run because they have no legs or feet, but these long and thin animals can move very fast on their stomachs. Snakes usually have green, yellow or black skins, which make it difficult for their enemies to find them. In winter they hibernate in holes. They look for a hole to stay inside, on the ground, or in a rock or a tree. They do not wake up again until spring comes. Snakes feed on mice, frogs, bird eggs and so on.
Snakes play an important part in nature. We can make useful medicines with them. Without their help, the rodents (啮齿动物) will be out of control. But many of them are in danger of disappearing. Houses and buildings take up the land where snakes live. Many snakes lose their lives in traffic, and people often kill snakes for their skins or meat.

Most of the sports events were in buildings that were already there or in temporary (临时的) ones that could be taken down later. This way, they didn’t have to build new buildings. The games used clean energy from nature, like wind and sun.

Hello, boys and girls. Have you ever thought about what you would do in an emergency (紧急情况)? Basic first aid can mean the difference between life and death. Let’s take a closer look at Helen Cowan’s experience.
Save a Stranger’s Life
Helen Cowan had decided to sit in the garden one evening when she heard a loud noise. At first, she thought something had fallen from her recently renovated (翻新的) house. But as she walked to the front of the house, she saw a small crowd gathered outside.
As she walked toward the crowd, she saw a boy lying in a pool of blood near a crashed (撞坏的) motorbike. His leg was almost cut off at the knee. Luckily, when Helen asked about his condition, the young man could still talk, even though he was in great pain.
Helen had knowledge of first aid and had also taken a British Red Cross first aid course. She used her training to make a quick assessment (评估) of the situation. Then she ran back inside her home to get several thick towels (毛巾) to stop the bleeding.
As Helen returned to the scene (现场) with the towels, a voice from the crowd had called an ambulance (救护车), but the young man was still bleeding heavily. “On my return, I could see that the other people were afraid to come forward and help. I used the towel as best I could to apply (施加) pressure to the wound until help arrived.” Helen recalled. Then she successfully managed to control the bleeding and comforted the young man while waiting for help to arrive. Before long, the ambulance team arrived at the scene.
Unfortunately, doctors weren’t able to save the man’s leg, but they did save his life-and Helen’s actions played a key role. Without the simple but effective (有效的) first aid skills Helen used, the results of this accident could have been far worse.
“Knowing first aid gave me the confidence to look at the situation, to stay calm, and most importantly, to step forward to help in an emergency situation when others wouldn’t. I feel so happy that my first aid knowledge helped me save a stranger’s life.” Helen said.
