The Emperor and I spoke to each other but neither of us understood a single word. I tried many languages but no one could understand my words, not even the cleverest of the Emperor’s followers. After about two hours, the Emperor left with his wife, children and their servants. He ordered some strong guards (警卫) to stop the crowd of people hurting me. Then I pretended (假装) to eat the sixth man. The poor man shouted terribly. The guards were worried when they saw my knife in my hand. But I only cut the binding (捆绑物) round his hands. Then I put him on his feet and let him go. I lifted the other five men out of my pocket and put them on the ground, too. The people and the guards were very happy with my great kindness. They told the Emperor about it. The Emperor ordered his men to make a bed for me and they had to join six hundred of their little beds together to make one bed for me. At the same time, the Emperor asked all his advisers for their advice on how to deal with me. They were very worried. If they set me free, I might be dangerous. I was eating so much food that soon all the people would be very hungry. The farmers could not grow enough food to feed all of us. The wise men thought that they should kill me. Try laughing for no reason at all. That’s how millions of people start their day at Laughter Clubs around the world and many doctors now think that having a good laugh might be one of the best ways to stay healthy. The first Laughter Club was started in Mumbai, India, in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria. “Young children laugh about 300 times a day. Adults laugh between 7 and 15 times a day,” says Dr. Kataria. “Everyone is naturally good at laughing—it’s the common language. We want people to feel happy with their lives.” There are now more than 500 Laughter Clubs in India and over 1,300 in the world. Many doctors are also interested in the effects (效果) of laughter on our health. According to a 5-year study at the UCLA School of Medicine in California, with laughing there is less stress in the body. Laughter improves our health against illness by about 40%. So what happens at a Laughter Club? I went along to my nearest club in South London to find out. I was quite nervous at the beginning of the class, to be honest, I wasn’t interested in laughing with a group of strangers, and I was worried about looking silly. Our laughter teacher told us to clap our hands and say “ho ho ho, ha ha ha” while looking at each other. However, our bodies can’t tell the difference between real laughter and unreal laughter, so they still produce the same healthy effects. Surprisingly, it works! After ten minutes everybody in the room was laughing for real and some people just couldn’t stop! At the end of the class I was surprised by how relaxed and comfortable I felt. So if you’re under stress, then start laughing. You might be very pleased with the results. 8. Where was the first Laughter Club started? A. In Britain. B. In America. C. In India. D. In Japan. 9. How many Laughter Clubs are there in the world today? A. Over 300. B. Over 500. C. Over 800. D. Over 1,300. 10. How did the writer feel at the beginning of the class? A. Nervous. B. Surprised. C. Cheerful. D. Tired. 11. What does the article mainly tells us? A. Laughing is one of the best ways to stay healthy. B. There are now many Laughter Clubs in the world. C. Young children laugh much more often than adults in a day. D. Many doctors are also interested in the effects of laughter on our health. D Plastic waste (塑料垃圾) is a main environmental problem. It stays in nature for hundreds of years, hurting animals, oceans, and the environment. Millions of animals are affected every year, and “plastic islands” in the oceans continue to grow. However, scientists have recently found a possible solution—some special plants and fungi (真菌) have the ability to “eat” plastic. In one experiment (实验), scientists put a plastic bottle with some fungi in a box. After several weeks, the fungi made special chemicals (化学物质) that broke down the plastic into small pieces. By the end of the experiment, most of the bottle was gone, leaving only safe things like water and air. This experiment shows the ability of fungi to help solve the problem of plastic pollution. Scientists also found other fungi and small living things in forests and mountains that can break down plastic. These small living things thrive in difficult environments, the large number of which makes them good at breaking down hard plastic. This finding could change how we deal with plastic. Our old ways like recycling (回收) cost too much and don’t work well enough. Using plants and fungi would be cheaper and better for the environment than factories. However, there are still problems. We need to grow enough of these plastic-eating fungi and make sure they don’t hurt nature at the same time. Besides, scientists must study more to make them work in natural environments. Even with these problems, the future is still hopeful. Special farms could be set up in oceans and polluted areas to grow these fungi and plants. This could work better because the number of them is big and they can break down plastic waste better and faster. If we can use these special fungi to “eat” plastic, we might solve the pollution problems and make the Earth cleaner. Scientists are still studying how we can use fungi to fight plastic pollution in the future. 12. What did the scientists find according to Paragraph 2? A. Fungi can break down plastic. B. Plastic pollution is hard to solve. C. People should use fungi instead of plastic. D. There are different kinds of plastic waste. 13. In which sentence does “thrive” have the same meaning as in Paragraph 3? A. The business began to thrive after making new products. B. Children thrive when they get enough love and care. C. The music festival thrives on creative performances. D. Some plants thrive in dry places with little water. 14. Why is using fungi better than traditional recycling method? A Fungi can work in any environment easily. B. It is less expensive and more eco-friendly. C. Factories produce more pollution than fungi. D. Fungi can eat all types of plastic quickly. 15. What might the writer discuss next? A. Ways to make the Earth clean. B Different experiments scientists did. C. The future use of plastic-eating fungi. D. Other ways to solve plastic pollution. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 根据短文内容,从短文后所给的选项中,选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 As we all know, eyes are the windows of the soul (灵魂). C. A. Fungi can work in any environment easily. B. It is less expensive and more eco-friendly. C. Factories produce more pollution than fungi. D. Fungi can eat all types of plastic quickly. 15. What might the writer discuss next? A. Ways to make the Earth clean. B. Different experiments scientists did. C. The future use of plastic-eating fungi. D.
