Most 5-year-olds are just learning their ABCs but one little girl from the UK has actually written a book that was published in January 2022. Bella-Jay Dark from Weymouth, is the world’s youngest female and was awarded the title by Guinness World Records (吉尼斯世界纪). Her book, The Lost Cat tells the story of Snowy, a cat who got lost after going outside alone at night. She hopes the book will teach children not to go outside at night alone.
While many adult writers find inspiration for their books from life experiences, Bella’s creative vision actually came from one of her drawings. “It started off as a picture. My daddy said I could make a book and a story came from the picture,” Bella said.
Her mom, Chelsie Syme, was surprised that the book turned out as well as it did. “I am just really proud of her; I did not think it was going to go this far so I’m just proud and want to see her get the acknowledgement she deserves.”
But how did Syme get a child’s homemade book published? According to Syme, they took Bella’s book to a book fair and found a publisher willing to take a chance on it. Syme helped Bella with proofing copies (校对本) and making necessary changes. To earn the Guinness World Record title of The World’s Youngest Published Author, female, the book has to be published by a commercial publishing house and have at least 1000 copies printed and sold. Bella’s book met the criteria, so she was awarded the title.
4. Why did Bella write the story of Snowy?
A. To inspire adult writers to create more works.
B. To win the World’s Youngest Published Author.
C. To warn children not to go outside alone at night.
D. To encourage little children to learn writing skills.
5. What inspired Belly to write her book?
A. Her previous life experience. B. One picture drawn by herself.
C. The encouragement from her parents. D. The invitation from Guinness World Records.
6. How did Syme feel about her daughter’s success?
A. Beyond her expectation. B. Excited as expected.
C. Extremely concerned. D. At a loss.
7. What can we learn about the book?
A. It’s a science fiction version. B. Its author is the youngest in history.
C. It’s translated in some foreign languages. D. It’s published by a commercial publishing house.

Almost half of young people would rather live in a world where the internet does not exist, according to a new survey. The research reveals that nearly 70% of 16- to 21-year-olds feel worse about themselves after spending time on social media. Half would support a “digital curfew” that would restrict their access to certain apps and sites past 10 p.m., while 46% said they would rather be young in a world without the internet altogether. A quarter of respondents spent four or more hours a day on social media, while 42% of those surveyed admitted to lying to their parents and guardians about what they do online. While online, 42% said they had lied about their age, 40% admitted to having a decoy or “burner” account, and 27% said they pretended to be a different person completely.
Rani Govender, the policy manager for child safety online at the NSPCC, said that digital curfews, while helpful, could not stop children being exposed to harmful materials online without other measures being put in place. “We need to make clear that a digital curfew alone is not going to protect children from the risks they face online. They will be able to see all these risks at other points of the day and they will still have the same impact,” she said. Govender added that the primary focus for companies and the government was to ensure kids are using “much safer and less addictive sites”.
The study, conducted by the British Standards Institution, surveyed 1,293 young people and found that 27% of respondents have shared their location online with strangers. In the same survey, 68% said they felt the time they spent online was harmful to their mental health.
Andy Burrows, the chief executive of the suicide prevention charity the Molly Rose Foundation, said “It is clear that young people are aware of the risks online and, what’s more, they want action from tech companies to protect them”. He added that algorithms (算法) can provide content that can quickly spiral (加剧) and take young people down rabbit holes of harmful and distressing material through no fault of their own. “New laws were urgently required to finally embed (把……牢牢嵌入) a safe by design approach to regulation that puts the needs of children and society ahead of those of big tech”, he said.
8. What can be learned in paragraph 1?
A. Few young people chat with their parents online.
B. Many young people are opposed to the digital curfew.
C. Nearly 30% of respondents created fake online identities.
D. Most young people prefer to live in a world with the internet.
9. What does Rani Govender’s statement imply?
A. More measures should be taken. B. Children should learn to self-reflect.
C. Some addictive sites should be stopped. D. Digital curfews are completely useless.
10. What does the underlined phrase “rabbit holes” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Practical approaches. B. Promising futures.
C. Animals’ shelters. D. Tough situations.
11. What is Andy Burrows’ primary argument in the last paragraph?
A. Children safety online must be prioritized.
B. More government funding should be provided.
C. Algorithms should be designed to users’ preferences.
D. Young people should be reminded of the risks online.
D
In many science labs, animals like mice or rabbits are often used to study diseases, test new drugs, and check chemical safety. However, new technology is changing that. Scientists are now building new ways to do research without using animals. These new methods can be more kind to animals, faster, and more correct.
One exciting tool is the organ-on-a-chip. These are very small devices that mimic (模仿) human organs such as the heart, lungs, or liver. Scientists grow real human cells on these chips so they work like real organs. Instead of testing a drug on a mouse, scientists can watch how human tissue reacts. Another approach uses computer models and artificial intelligence (AI). These smart programs can look at lots of data and guess how drugs will act in the human body. AI can also help spot toxic (有毒的) effects and side effects before real tests begin. A third method is 3D cell cultures. These grow in three dimensions and are called “mini-organs.” They are more like real human tissues and help doctors understand how diseases grow and how drugs work inside the body.
Why are these new tools so important? Testing on animals is often expensive, takes a lot of time, and is sometimes not correct. Also, animals are not the same as humans. So, results from animals may not work for people. Many people also believe it is wrong to hurt animals for science if there are better ways.
Scientists think that one day labs will use chips, AI, and 3D models together to build a “virtual human body”. This could help test new drugs, understand new viruses, and guess health results — all without using any animals.
In short, science is moving forward. With new technology, we may no longer need animals to understand medical problems. These tools are helping us move to a future where research is smarter, faster, and more fair.
12. What can we learn about an “organ-on-a-chip”?
A. A 3D printed human organ. B. An animal cell used for testing.
C. A computer model of a body part. D. A mimic human organ using real cells.
13. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. AI strategies applied in the labs. B. Purposes of the medical experiments.
C. Reasons for abandoning animal testing. D. Tips on putting new tools into practice.
14. What can we infer about future research from the text?
A. New drugs will no longer need any testing.
B. Combined models with hi-tech will be applied.
C. Animal testing will become more popular again.
D. Scientists will focus less on ethical (伦理的) issues.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Free Lab Animals Into Wild B. A call for Innovative Science
C. Moving Beyond Animal Tests D. New Drugs Created by AI

Flying a kite has been a windy day pastime. ____16____ Here are the basic steps for how to launch your kite with minimum stress and more enjoyment!
To launch a kite into the air, the force of the initial lift must be greater than the kite’s weight. Once it’s in the air, you have to keep the forces in balance so your kite continues to fly smoothly. ____17____ Also, thrust (猛推) by the wind must be equal to drag, the kite’s resistance to movement through the air.
A good rule is to start your flight with the wind at your back. That way, when you let go of your kite, you can keep an eye on it as it rises in front of you. ____18____ Avoid going out in stormy weather too, in case of lightning strikes. If your kite has tails, pay attention to what direction they are blowing, because they’re an indicator of wind direction.
The beach is always a good option when choosing a location for flying a kite, because it usually has a strong offshore wind. Hold the kite in your non-dominant hand and the spool (线轴) in the other. You’ll notice that the kite is already picking up the wind. ____19____ When you feel the kite pulling away from you as it catches an updraft (上升气流), let your string spool out a bit.
____20____ Have the friend hold the kite and spool out string for several feet, making sure it’s straight. As you hold on to the spool, tell your friend to throw the kite straight up in the air. If there’s enough wind, the kite will take flight. Make sure you pull the line as your friend lets go.
A. Then pull the kite up to catch the wind.
B. You can team up to give your kite a boost.
C. Flying near trees and power lines is a bad idea.
D. That means lift must equal the weight of the kite.
E. If you can balance these forces, your kite will rise.
F. Now let go of the kite and grasp the spool with both hands.
G. You would feel delighted to see your own flying kites to the sky.

When Ursula Bannister, a 79-year-old experienced hiker, decided to make her annual solo trip to High Rock Lookout last August, she never expected the terrible turn her day would take. This time, as she went down the steep(陡峭的) 3.2-mile trail(小路), her foot caught in a hidden hole, and she fell forward. Sharp pain spread through her leg, and she knew it was broken.
Lying on the ground, she cried out for help. Before long, a stranger soon approached and called 911. They were told a search and rescue team would arrive in five hours. Desperate for pain relief, Ursula asked if anyone had painkillers, but no one did.
Just then, a young man, Troy May, appeared. Without hesitation, Troy, an Air Force airman, offered to carry Ursula down the trail. Wearing cowboy boots, Troy soon got blisters(水疱) on his feet, but a passer - by selflessly gave him shoes. A couple on the trail also joined in to help. One, a physical therapist(治疗专家) carefully bandaged(包扎) Ursula’s foot and made a makeshift splint(夹板), and the other, an occupational therapist patiently helped her with breathing exercises to help calm her.
During the long hike down, they talked with Ursula, learning about her life in Germany and her move to the US in 1959. Their stories and jokes distracted her from the pain. Finally, they reached the parking lot. Troy drove Ursula to the hospital, where she learned she had three fractures(骨折) in her leg. The medical team was impressed by the splint and said it had reduced further damage.
Ursula spent a week waiting for the swelling to go down before surgery. Now with 11 screws (螺丝钉) in her leg, she is deeply grateful to Troy and the others who helped her. They regularly check on her recovery, and a warm, new friendship has formed among them.

【答案】8. C 9. A 10. D 11. A

Now, with 11 screws (螺丝钉) in her leg, she is deeply grateful to Troy and the others who helped her. They regularly check on her recovery, and a warm, new friendship has formed among them.
