The 9th Asian Winter Games will kick off on February 7, 2025 in Harbin, Heilongjiang province. There will be 34 countries and regions — the most in the event’s history — taking part in the Games. Here are some fun facts about the Games.
Torch (火炬)
The torch stands 735mm tall and is inspired by a beautiful lilac (丁香花), Harbin’s city flower. The theme of its design, “Surging”, aims to express the strong energy of life in nature. It shows that the 9th Asian Winter Games will be filled with enthusiasm and passion. The design of the torch takes the form of a flowering lilac, integrating colors such as China Red, Lilac Purple and Snow White, symbolizing the sincerity, warmth, openness, and inclusiveness of Heilongjiang province and the characteristics of the host city, Harbin.
Emblem (徽章)
The emblem, named “Breakthrough”, combines symbols of short track speed skaters, flowing ribbons (丝带) and lilacs. Its colors, in shades of blue and purple, reflect the beauty of sunlight on ice and snow. The figure’s shape looks like the Chinese character “九”, representing the 9th Games, and “合”, representing unity and friendship. Through this emblem, Harbin extends a warm welcome and expresses hopes for shared growth among Asian countries.
Mascots (吉祥物)
The mascots for the Games, Binbin and Nini, are two lovable Siberian tigers. Binbin represents ice sports and wears ice skates, while Nini, representing snow sports, rides a snowboard. Their names — “Binbin” from “Harbin” and “Nini” from the Chinese word for “you” — come together to form a message: “Harbin welcomes you! ” These tiger mascots were inspired by two real tigers born in Harbin and represent values of strength, courage and positivity.
Events
The upcoming Games will feature 64 events in total, with 31% making their first appearance, including new events in speed skating, short track speed skating and ski mountaineering. Notably, ski mountaineering will also be included in the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, making the Asian Winter Games a testing ground for the sport.

My mother, who wasn’t good at driving and using technology, planned to drive for Uber, an online platform that provides ride-hailing (打车) services.
One day on her way home from grocery shopping, she turned on the app, which matched her quickly with a rider named Matthew. As she made her way toward him, the panic seized her — the silent navigation (导航), the distracting screen and the swipe/ tap confusion. It was just too much. Naturally, she turned off her phone. She did not cancel the ride, nor did she contact him to explain. She turned her car and raced toward home.
A few minutes later, Mom turned on her phone to check her text messages. She had several missed calls from Matthew, who had been watching her on his screen and had seen her drive in the opposite direction for the past five minutes.
Matthew called again. She hesitated, and then picked up the phone. “Why are you driving in the opposite direction?” he asked. “Listen,” she explained. “This is my first time with Uber, and I don’t know how to use it.”
Then Mom found the destination and Matthew got in the car. Matthew was a handsome man in his early thirties with a kind face. Mom told Matthew he would need to manage the technology if he wanted to arrive on time.
“So, start the trip,” she requested and tossed her phone to Matthew. He was glad of service. They laughed, talked and eventually arrived at Yorkdale — although at the wrong entrance.
“I’m sorry,” she said. “It’s OK,” laughed Matthew. “Everyone is a beginner at some point.” He ended the trip, returned her phone and started to climb out of the car.
“Matthew,” she called from her window, “you’d better not rate me one star.” “I’m rating you five right now!” he said and he really did.
Matthew disappeared into the mall, smiling. She smiled, too, proud that her first ride was such a success.

A few years ago, we bought a Lego Taj Mahal (泰姬陵) for my dad’s birthday, hoping to combine his love for architecture with family time.
Each evening, my dad and I gathered around the large dining table to build the model. We faced thousands of tiny white pieces, each packaged with precision in numbered plastic bags, accompanied by a thick instruction book. The evenings passed quickly, and the building rose before our eyes. We could see our efforts producing good results, and as we turned to the boring task of ordering the colored bricks on the building’s floor, our conversation too took a turn.
We were amazed by how complex the model was and its instruction book. We realized the book itself was a work of art, beautiful, but also surprisingly detailed and clear. It provided us with the comfort of certainty. We knew if we followed all the instructions, we would end up with a model that looked exactly like the picture on the box. If we made a mistake, all we had to do was to repeat our steps and start again.
Life, however, does not fit together so neatly and rarely provides us with such clear instructions. We talked over our respective lives, decisions made, and actions and choices never taken. Dad reflected on a life well lived, and I, in my mid-thirties, on the uncertain path that lay ahead.
Here, we were the expert architects doing the assembling (组装), but out in the world, we were the ones being assembled. We think we’re in control, but our choices are shaped by forces beyond our control. In the face of uncertainty, we have to proceed, trusting both in the process and the end result.
Sometimes, on the days I return home, I go to the spare room to look at the completed Lego model, which brings forth a sense of happiness and comfort. It reminds me that life is built slowly, with mistakes, an element of uncertainty and no instruction book. It shows that consideration, warmth and faith will result in a life well lived. Life itself is not about what we materially create or leave behind, but rather how we lived it.
8. Which can best describe the author’s experience of building the Lego model?
A. Simple and uninteresting. B. Imaginative and enjoyable.
C. Complicated and rewarding. D. Challenging and discouraging.
9. What does the author learn from assembling the Lego model?
A. Life requires to be planned carefully. B. Life doesn’t come with clear guidance.
C Mistakes in life can always be corrected. D. Life’s uncertainty makes it more exciting.
10. How does the author suggest we deal with uncertainty in life?
A. By avoiding making any choice. B. By focusing on instant end results.
C. By seeking instructions from others. D. By moving forward with confidence.
11. What does the completed Lego model mean to the author?
A. The value of hard work in life. B. The achievement of life goals.
C. The journey of living one’s life. D. The joy of staying with families.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. D 11. C
根据第二段“We faced thousands of tiny white pieces, each packaged with precision in numbered plastic bags, accompanied by a thick instruction book. The evenings passed quickly, and the building rose before our eyes. We could see our efforts producing good results, and as we turned to the boring task of ordering the colored bricks on the building’s floor, our conversation too took a turn.(我们面对着成千上万的白色小零件,每一个都用精确编号的塑料袋包装着,附有一本厚厚的说明书。夜晚过得很快,那座建筑在我们眼前升起。我们可以看到我们的努力产生了良好的效果,当我们转向订购大楼地板上的彩色砖块的无聊任务时,我们的谈话也发生了变化)”可知,搭建乐高面对数千个小小的白色积木,可推理出这个过程是复杂的;同时因搭建的建筑物在我们眼前逐渐升起,我们能看到努力正在结出果实,即作者搭建乐高模型的经历复杂而有益。故选C。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Life, however, does not fit together so neatly and rarely provides us with such clear instructions. We talked over our respective lives, decisions made, and actions and choices never taken.(然而,生活并没有如此整齐地结合在一起,也很少给我们提供如此清晰的指示。我们谈论各自的生活,所做的决定,以及从未采取的行动和选择)”可知,作者从组装乐高模型中学到了人生没有明确的指引。故选B。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“In the face of uncertainty, we have to move on, trusting bot in the process and the end result(面对不确定性,我们必须继续前进,既相信过程也相信最终结果)”可知,作者建议我们充满信心地前进来处理生活中的不确定性。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Sometimes, on the days I return home, I go to the spare room to look at the completed Lego model, which brings forth a sense of happiness and comfort. It reminds me that life is built slowly, with mistakes, an element of uncertainty and no instruction book. It shows that consideration, warmth and faith will result in a life well lived. Life itself is not about what we materially create or leave behind, but rather how we lived it.(有时,在我回家的日子里,我去空余的房间看完成的乐高模型,这带来了一种幸福和舒适的感觉。
D
Artificial intelligence (AI) might be the biggest winner of the Nobel Prize in 2024. US scientist John Hopfield and British-Canadian Geoffrey Hinton won the 2024 Nobel Prize in physics for discoveries and inventions in machine learning that paved the way for the AI rapid growth, according to Reuters.
In 1982, Hopfield created a network that helps computers store and recall patterns, similar to how our brains remember things. A year later, Hinton developed the Boltzmann machine, which allows computers to learn independently to recognize patterns in data, such as identifying specific objects in images.
As for the Nobel Prize in chemistry, US scientists David Baker and John Jumper, along with British computer scientist Demis Hassabis, won the prize. Half the prize was awarded to Baker “for computational protein design” while the other half was shared by Jumper and Hassabis for their development of the AI model AlphaFold2.
Scientists struggled for decades to predict how proteins fold into their 3D shapes that determine their function. However, AlphaFold2, developed by AI research laboratory DeepMind, can accurately predict the 3D structures of nearly all known proteins, showing great potential in the field of drug development.
“AI can be a powerful tool for solving problems that involve obtaining outputs from inputs, showing its great potential in scientific research, ” Professor Yang Maojun from Tsinghua University told Science and Technology Daily.
In his view, AI applications are not limited to fields like biology, chemistry or physics. Their range mainly depends on how well problems from the real world can be abstracted into a form that AI can learn and process, and whether there is sufficient real-world data to train and build deep learning networks.
AI's importance in scientific research is increasingly evident. Yang believes that scientists should actively accept this trend while remaining aware of AI's limitations. Hinton expressed a similar concern at the Nobel press conference. “We also have to worry about a number of possible bad consequences, particularly the threat of these things getting out of control, ” he said.
“Humans carry the responsibility for using this new technology in a safe and ethical (合乎道德的) way, for the greatest benefit of humankind,” said Ellen Moons, chair of the Nobel Committee for Physics.
12. What was John Hopfield’s contribution to the 2024 Nobel Prize in physics?
A. Inventing a new learning machine. B. Designing a new type of data processor.
C. Creating an AI model for image analysis. D. Developing a network for pattern storage.
13. Why is AlphaFold2 important in the field of drug development?
A. It can forecast protein folding patterns. B. It can produce new proteins for drug use.
C. It can identify proteins related to diseases. D. It can analyze the genetic orders of proteins.
14. What may determine the potential of AI applications according to Yang Maojun?
A. The accuracy of AI training data. B. The effectiveness of machine learning.
C. The availability of enough real-world data. D. The level of real-world problem settlement.
15. What can be the best title of the passage?
A. AI also has its weak points. B. AI should benefit humankind.
C. AI steals the show at the Nobel Prize. D. AI may run out of control in the future.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. C

When parents are on their phones a lot, what will happen to their kids? Parents who stare at their screens instead of talking to their kids aren’t just modeling poor behavior, but they could be preventing their children's language development, a new study found.
Parents who use screens more have children who use screens more. And those children have a lower talent in grammar and vocabulary. When screens are in use, either by a parent or a child, there is less talking, teaching and reading in house-holds. ___16___
What’s more, when kids watch screens with their parents, the study found it doesn’t help their language skills. ___17___ For example, kids ages 24 to 30 months learn new verbs when they are taught through a live interaction or even video chat, but not by watching a video, according to a September 2023 study.
The study suggests parents should try not to spend too much time on devices when they are with their children. ___18___ Try to spare a few minutes – start with 15 minutes a day if it seems really hard-where your phone is truly out of sight, out of mind. It helps model good practices for your kids.
Parents are also advised to re-evaluate whether they need to be responsive to everything that comes through on their phones in real time. We live in a world where everything seems urgent but usually actually isn't. ___19___ It’s simply not possible.
___20___ It’s never too late to repair. Spend some extra time reading together or in a no-phone zone like the dinner table. By caring about your kid’s development and looking into tips like these, you are already doing a great job.
A. We don’t actually need our phones all the time.
B. It is an easy way to calm children down or occupy them.
C. Avoid checking your phone instead of hanging out with your friends.
D. And this may be a reason for the lower grammar skills and vocabulary.
E. Try not to put pressure on yourself to respond immediately to everything.
F. Another research also suggests younger children don’t learn well from screens.
G. But parents shouldn’t overstress if they or their child have spent much time on screens.
【答案】16. D 17. F 18. A 19. E 20. G

Eight-year-old Lily was a curious little girl who loved exploring the world around her. One day, Lily’s mother asked her to go to the store to buy some groceries. Excited by the thought of being responsible, Lily happily walked along the streets, her small steps filled with purpose and enthusiasm. The sun was shining, and the air was filled with the scent (香味) of freshly baked bread from the nearby bakery, adding to her excitement.
As Lily walked into the store, she noticed a beautiful container of pink candies on the cashier’s desk. The candies were wrapped in sparking wrappers, and they seemed to call out to her. She really wanted to buy them. However, there was one problem-she didn’t have enough money to pay.
Then, Lily came up with an idea. She told herself it was just a little white lie and that no one would ever know. It seemed like a simple solution to her dilemma (困境). She quickly put the candies into her shopping bag and paid for the groceries, hoping that her secret would be safe.
That evening, Lily couldn’t help but feel regretful in her heart. The excitement of the day had faded, replaced by a heavy feeling of guilt. She knew that what she had done wasn’t right. Her conscience (良知) was eating away at her, causing her to lose sleep and feel restless. The candies, once a source of joy, now sat heavily in her stomach, a reminder of her actions.
The next morning, Lily’s mother noticed her daughter’s troubled expression and asked her what was wrong. Lily hesitated for a moment, the weight of her secret almost too much to bear. But then, the truth poured out of her mouth like a waterfall.
“Mom, I have something to tell you,” Lily said, tears welling up in her eyes, “I took some candies from the store without paying for them. I'm really sorry.” Her voice was small, but the sincerity in her words was clear.
Her mother’s face softened, and she pulled Lily into a warm hug. “Lily, I am proud of you for telling me the truth,” her mother said gently. “But it’s important to understand that lying, even about something small, can hurt others and ourselves. Let’s go back to the store and make things right.”

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】作答示例:
Shortly, Lily and her mother were back at the store. Lily’s heart was pounding, but her mother gave her the courage she needed. They approached the cashier desk, and with a trembling voice, Lily explained what she had done and admitted her mistake. The store owner, surprised by the little girl’s honesty, smiled kindly and praised her for her integrity. He even gave her a bag of candies as a reward for her bravery and honesty. Lily’s face lit up with relief and gratefulness as she handed over the money, feeling a heavy weight lift off her shoulders.
From that day on, Lily understood the importance of telling the truth. The experience taught her that honesty, even when it’s difficult, is always the best policy. She learned that while mistakes are part of life, it’s how we correct them that builds up our character. Lily’s mother’s support and the store owner’s understanding left a lasting impression on her. She promised never to let a “little white lie” cloud her judgment again. The pink candies incident remained a precious memory, a reminder of the power of truth and the warmth of a mother’s love in guiding her through life’s lessons.

My mother who wasn’t good at driving and using technology, planned to drive for Uber, an online platform that provides ride-hailing (打车) services.

9 What does the author learn from assembling the Lego model?
A. Life requires to be planned carefully. B. Life doesn’t come with clear guidance.
C. Mistakes in life can always be corrected.
A The accuracy of AI training data.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。
