People often say, “The more you work the land, the better your crops (庄稼) will be.” That’s the spirit of our school during our recent Growing Week!
In the morning, we went to our rooms. And the teacher showed us how to make the bed and where to put our things. At first, we wondered why we needed to learn such simple tasks. The teacher said, “Even simple things can be difficult until you know how to do them.”
At lunchtime, the teachers told us, “You have to wash the dishes after eating.” At first, we didn’t do it very well. So, the teachers showed us the right way to clean them. After that, the dishes looked much better!
In the evening, the teachers taught us how to cook rice. We made some mistakes at first, but at last we got it right! We were so happy, because we were eating food cooked by ourselves. That night, we didn’t waste (浪费) any rice.
Time went by quickly, and Growing Week ended. Now, I think it’s time for me to help out more at home.

Passage 3
Dear Mark,
I was so glad to receive your letter. And you asked me what club you should join. So I want to tell you something about that.
Our school has a Glee club and it’s brilliant(精彩的). I know this because I’m a member! So what is a Glee club? Simple—it’s a club for singing and I love singing.
Miss Higgins is the club leader. She chooses three songs and helps us to sing them. She plays the piano, too. Miss Higgins has long straight hair. As a teacher, she’s really cool and she’s really kind. She never gets angry with us. She’s not even the school Music teacher. She teaches maths, but she just loves singing. We often sing popular songs from films but we sometimes sing old songs from the 1960s and 1970s.
Three times a year we perform our songs in front of the rest of the school in a special concert. I feel so happy when I’m on stage. The teachers and the other students always cheer when we finish. It feels marvelous(了不起的). I love it.
I love Glee club. Music is a great way to bring people together. You make so many friends at Glee club and not just with people from your school year. Glee club is for all ages. We meet in the school hall every Tuesday at lunchtime and every Friday after school.
Come and join us—we are always happy to see new people!
Your schoolmate
Peter

When we entered the collection house, our eyes were caught by a collection of old photos of the town on the walls of the front hall. Those photos told us something about the history of the town. And then in the Art Room, we saw many photos of the countryside. Some famous local artists drew them. The colors of the flowers and the trees were rich and bright. All at once, I lost myself in the beauty of nature.
Then we went upstairs (楼上). On the left, there were over one hundred different clocks. The oldest clock was already more than two hundred years old. To my surprise, the clocks all worked well and they could tell the right time. It was then ten o’clock, and some clocks made different beautiful sounds. It seemed to be a concert. How amazing!
On the right there was also a stone (石头) collection. The stones were from all over the country. They were in different sizes, colors and shapes. Some looked like different kinds of animals. I really liked one stone that looked like a little monkey. It looked very nice.

Dear Li Hua,
How are things going? Now we are having Gaelic football matches in the school. Have you heard of Gaelic football? It’s one of the oldest sports in Ireland. It’s loved and played by men, women and children all around the country. The ball game uses a ball like soccer balls and is played between two teams with fifteen players per team. Every player can use both their hands and feet. In Gaelic football there are two different types of score possible, in the form of goals and points. When a player kicks or hits the ball past the goalkeeper and into the net, he wins a goal, and the umpire (裁判员) behind the goalposts would raise a green flag. If a player kicks or hand-passes the ball between the posts but over the crossbar, he wins a point, and a white flag would be raised. Each point is worth one, and a goal is worth three points. A traditional Gaelic football match lasts seventy minutes in total with two halves of thirty-five minutes each.
In my school, every June we have big matches, and every class has a boys team or girls team. I am on my class’s girls team. I really enjoy playing in the game, and I feel really proud when I score a point or goal.
Do you love sports too? What sport does your school often play?
Yours truly,
Emily

Passage 6
In most parts of the world, many students help their schools make less pollution. They join environment clubs. In an environment club, people work together to protect the environment.
No rubbish lunches. How much rubbish do you throw after lunch? Environment clubs ask students to bring their lunches in bags that can be recycled. The students try their best to make less rubbish.
World Car-Free Day was first started by 35 cities in France on September 22, 1998. It was started to protect the environment. By now, more than 1000 cities around the world have had no-car day. In China, more and more people are taking part in the activity. The slogan (口号) for World Car-Free Day is, “If we drive less for one day, we can have one nicer day.” On a no-car day, nobody comes to school by car—not the students or the teachers!
Cars give pollution to the air, so remember: Walk, ride or run! Use your legs! It’s lots of fun!
Turn off water! Do you know that some toilets (厕所) could waste 20-40 ml of water an hour? In a year, that will fill a small river! To save the water, the members of the environment clubs try to mend those broken toilets.
We have only one earth. Let’s work hard together to make our world cleaner and more beautiful.

Good News! Students at Gaoxin Junior Middle School of Shenzhen Nanshan Foreign Language School can take their favorite club activity classes. These classes take place every Thursday from 4:40 p.m. to 6:05 p.m.. With 55 different clubs, such as sports, arts and singing, students have many choices to keep them busy.
Among the fun classes, students really like the soil and hydroponics club (水土栽培社团). In each class, students first learn important things like how to tell plants from each other and how to plant them in the right place. Then, they have 10 minutes to observe (观察) real plants. Finally, here comes the most interesting part: They can plant their plants in the school garden! They need to choose the best way to care for different plants. For example, strawberries grow well in water and apples love soil.
“It’s interesting but also difficult,” said Wang Yijie, a 13-year-old girl. “In hydroponics, different plants need to stay in water with different PH levels. So, I need to make water match their needs by adding acid (酸) in different amounts (量). It is all about chemistry (化学).”
The clubs not only let students learn different subjects, but they also help students grow in many ways.
“Being in the singing club has taught me the power of teamwork,” said 12-year-old Zhao Ruixi. “I am also more confident now and no longer feel nervous when I have to speak in front of many people.”

Passage 8
In many Chinese cities, primary and middle schools have made class breaks longer from 10 to 15 minutes since the fall semester (学期) started. The governments (政府) want students and teachers to do more outdoor activities.
Before, Chinese schools usually had 10-minute breaks. But it was not enough time for students, especially those in tall buildings, to go outside and play. Sometimes, schools didn’t let students leave the classroom during breaks because they were worried about safety.
Now, local education departments (部门) are trying to make school schedules better. They want students to have at least 30 minutes of exercise every day.
In Beijing, primary schools’ morning and afternoon times haven’t changed. Middle schools end five minutes later.
In Wuxi, Jiangsu, schools have 15-minute breaks and one PE class every day. Students must do at least 100 minutes of exercise at school. The education officer said this helps students play outside and talk to each other. They want to give break time back to students.
A Qingdao primary school has many outdoor games like jump rope and hula hoop, and indoor puzzles during 15-minute breaks. In May, a fitness test showed that 47 percent of Qingdao students got “excellent” or “good” fitness grades, 10 percent more than before.

During the break times between classes, Xiao Jingsheng from Beijing Shangdi Experimental School often went to the toilet then back to class with no time for anything else. But now that is different. “I can have more time to rest and share interesting things with my classmates,” said the 14-year-old.
“Starting this autumn term, students at primary and middle schools in Beijing have a longer break between two classes, from 10 minutes to 15 minutes, so students can spend more time outside.
To help children better enjoy break-time activities, some schools mixed break time with labor education by opening planting areas and animal breeding zones (饲养区).
“We have welcomed new friends to our school—some ducks and rabbits!” said Zhang Boren, a 13-year-old from Beijing 101 Middle School Kuangda Campus. “During the breaks, some play with these cute animals, while others exercise on the playground. We get closer to nature, which is refreshing (令人耳目一新的) and relaxing.”
As the break time is longer, making sure everyone is safe (安全的) is also important. P. E. teachers in schools keep an eye on students playing on the ground.
“Sometimes the ground can be wet in the morning, so we tell the students to do more upper body exercises to avoid (避免) running and falling down,” said one P. E. teacher.

Passage 10
Do you want to live a happier, less stressful life? Try laughing for no reason at all. That’s how thousands of people start their day at Laughter (笑声) Clubs around the world. Many doctors now think that having a good laugh might be one of the best ways to stay healthy.
The first Laughter Club was started in Mumbai, India, in 1995 by Dr. Madan Kataria. “Young children laugh about 300 times a day. Adults laugh between 7 and 15 times a day,” says Dr. Kataria. “Everyone is naturally good at laughing — it’s the universal language. We want people to feel happy with their lives.” There are now more than 500 Laughter Clubs in India and over 1,300 in the world.
Many doctors are also interested in the effects of laughter on our health. According to a 5-year study at the UCLA School of Medicine in California, with laughing there is less stress in the body. Laughter improves our health against illness by about 40%.
So what happens at a Laughter Club? I went along to my nearest club in South London to find out. I was quite nervous at the beginning of the class. To be honest, I wasn’t interested in laughing with a group of strangers, and I was worried about looking stupid. Our laughter teacher told us to clap our hands and say “ho ho ho, ha ha ha” while looking at each other. However, our bodies can’t tell the difference between real laughter and unreal laughter, so they still produce the same healthy effects.
Surprisingly, it worked! After ten minutes, everybody in the room was laughing for real and some people just couldn’t stop! At the end of the class I was surprised by how relaxed and comfortable I felt. So if you’re under stress, then start laughing. You might be very pleased with the results!

Passage 12
More than 2,000 years ago, businessmen transported (运输) goods through the Silk Road. In November, 2018, 450 students from a Sichuan high school were taking a research trip along the route.
The students study at the Golden Apple Jincheng No.1 Secondary School in Chengdu. In November, they traveled to 10 cities like Dunhuang and Xi’an to do research. They not only learned new things, but also challenged some of their own ideas.
Liu Zhiyan, 12, and her teammates studied characters at the Dunhuang frescoes (壁画). They looked at the figures (身材), expressions and gestures (手势) of the characters, which were created during the Tang Dynasty.
To take a close look at the frescoes, they visited 10 caverns (洞窟) at the Mogao Grottoes (莫高窟). When their tour guide talked, they quickly took notes and drew outlines of the characters. They found that most characters from the period looked like women. “They look plump (丰满的) and happy. They enjoy singing and dancing,” Liu said.
The trip offered students first-hand information for their research. It also encouraged them to question some of their previous ideas. When Qu Rongrong, 12, saw plump women in frescoes and sculptures (雕塑) from the Tang Dynasty, a question came to her mind: Modern people think being slim is beautiful, but why did people at that time like bigger women? Was this true? She decided to find the answer.
They turned to old poems for help. Her team picked 635 poems from the Tang Dynasty, which had descriptions of women at the time. Through checking key words like “肥” and “细腰”, they found that most of the women in the poems were “slim” instead of “fat”.
“It shows that being plump was not popular during the Tang Dynasty. Perhaps only noblemen (贵族) liked large women, as shown in artworks,” Qu said. Although this topic still needed further research. Qu was happy that they could take their first step towards finding the answer.

请阅读下列材料,并根据文章回答问题。
He Yueling, a fifth-grade student, won’t go home right after school this term because after-school care programs become available in all primary and middle schools in Shanghai. He Yueling says he now does math homework much more quickly with the help of his teacher on this program. It’s quite common to find his school full of life before 5:30 p.m. every day. Students are learning to cook Sichuan food in the after-school cooking club, reading Harry Potter in the library, playing kung fu and other sports on the school playground.
Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, started free after-school programs in all primary schools in 2017. All 84 primary and middle schools in Beijing’s Dongcheng District are also on such a program with all its teachers and 80 percent of its students.
China Youth Daily did a survey, asking 1,605 parents how they feel about this program. A mother says with a smile, “I don’t have to rush to my kid’s school after work and I needn’t worry how to help him with his homework now.” Most parents love the program because it helps them out when they have trouble picking up their children after school. The survey shows more than 92 percent of the parents expect schools to organize safe and colorful after-school activities for their children. 73 percent of the parents want the program to cover on-site(现场的) question-and-answer activities, while about 70 percent hope teachers could guide their children with homework.
Headmasters say school teachers should mainly work for the program and that they also welcome outside helping hands from artists, experts, university teachers, experienced parents and volunteers. They believe that schools should not only meet the parents’ need, but also have more choices on activities to make the program not become after-school classes like Xin Dongfang and Xue Ersi.
1. How many cities are on after-school care programs in this passage?
2. Will school teachers be the only group working for this program?
3. What will students do on this program according to the passage?
4.Do you agree that all the primary students should join in this program? Why or why not?

The trip lasted six days. During the first day, I learned how to fold a blanket by myself. It was great fun and useful to learn. Wu Xing: I always spent most of my time playing computer games, watching TV and chatting online. I never noticed how hard my parents were leading their lives. My father kept smoking that day. I dared not ask him why he was so unhappy. My mother told me that he lost his job because of this disaster. Many people were unemployed like my father.
Xu Yanjing: My friend told me that her uncle worked in Wuhan. His uncle would drive back, bring them all kinds of presents and spend a period of good time with all the family every winter holiday. I suddenly realized that the time when the family get together is so wonderful. I feel so sorry that every time when my mother asked me to have supper, I just couldn’t keep my eyes away from the TV!
Dong Meimei: My mother asked me a question, “What if I die?” To be honest, I never thought of such a question before that. We have lived together for over 14 years. I never imagined what my life would be if my mother left me. I suddenly realized that my mother will leave me because of disaster, illness or because she gets too old. I know I must value the time when we are together. I must take care of myself and my family. It’s my duty to do so.
Huang Ye: I went across some fields with my parents one day. Nothing was grown in the fields! I asked my father why it was like that. My father told me that the farmers were afraid they had no chance to sell what they grow. During this disaster, workers can’t get back to work, farmers can’t farm, students can’t get back to school. Dear Mark,
I was so glad to receive your letter.

Passage 5

Passage 13

2. Will school teachers be the only group working for this program?

I will never forget my school trip to Shanghai last week. It was a great learning experience! We got there by train. I was so tired that I could not call my mom, although I missed her a lot. I didn’t realize how much I would miss my mom until I was far away from home.
The trip lasted six days. During the first day, I learned how to fold a blanket by myself. It was great fun and useful to learn.
