Charles Smith, an experienced ski instructor buried under snow for an hour after this morning’s avalanche (雪崩), is recovering in hospital. He has been allowed to speak with reporters from his hospital bed, but he can’t stand up on his own because of a broken ankle. Speaking to reporters, he admitted the accident shocked everyone. “People didn’t think that this kind of thing would happen to an experienced skier” he said.
He said that the weather had been good all week, and there hadn’t been any warnings about possible avalanches. The problem was that Charles had gone out in an unprepared ski area, He explained. “It is true that there hadn’t been any avalanche warnings, but the fact is that I put other people in danger by leading my group to that area. I shouldn’t have done that,” he admitted regretfully.
Recalling the terrifying moment, he continued, while waiting for his group, he heard a loud noise and saw a wall of snow racing towards him. Charles had no time to react. Within seconds, he was blinded, everything turned white, and then there was silence. As time passed, Charles started to panic, fearing he wouldn’t be able to breathe. After what seemed like hours, he heard barking and realized that the specially trained mountain rescue dogs had found him using their incredible sense of smell. Once freed, his biggest concern was that there were still other people buried under the snow. Luckily, no others were caught.
Incredibly grateful to the dogs and the rescue team, he promised to thank them in person as soon as he was well enough to leave the hospital and he agreed that he was a very lucky man. Charles went on to stress that the frequency of avalanches has increased in recent years, “The point is that we all need to be careful, even if we are experienced skiers.”

Tiny plastic particles, called microplastics (1 nanometer to 5 millimeters), are now found everywhere — in oceans, air, food, and even our bodies. A 2024 US study suggests that people living in areas with high microplastic pollution may face a greater risk of chronic diseases like high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. The findings were shared at a major medical conference (ACC.25).
Researchers analyzed data from 555 coastal and lakeside communities in the U. S. between 2015 and 2019. They compared microplastic levels in seafloor sediments (沉淀物) to local health records. Areas with “very high” concentrations (over 40,000 particles per square meter) had more cases of these diseases than areas with low microplastic concentrations. For example, stroke risk linked to microplastics was similar to risks tied to race or lack of health insurance.
However, cancer rates showed no clear connection to microplastics. Using advanced computer models, scientists ranked microplastics among the top 10 factors influencing disease risk, which they didn’t expect. But they cautioned that this does not prove microplastics directly cause illness. Other factors, such as air pollution, poverty, or unhealthy diets, might also contribute.
Microplastics come from everyday items like plastic bottles, packaging, and synthetic clothing. When these items break down, tiny particles enter water and air. People unknowingly eat, drink, or breathe them. While avoiding microplastics entirely is impossible, reducing plastic use and improving recycling could lower exposure.
“Protecting our environment protects our health,” said lead researcher Sai Rahul Ponnana. Though more studies are needed to confirm the risks, taking steps now might help prevent future health problems.
8. What does the underlined word “concentrations” in paragraph 2 probably refer to?
A. Seafloor sediments. B. Cases of these diseases.
C. The amounts of microplastics. D. Risks linked to race and cancer rate.
9 What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. Poverty alone explains the health risks.
B Air pollution is directly related to the illnesses.
C. Cancer rates have a clear connection to microplastics.
D. Scientists were surprised by the unexpected ranking.
10. What is suggested to reduce microplastic exposure?
A. Using reusable shopping bags. B. Banning plastic packaging.
C. Drinking only bottled water. D. Moving away from coastal areas.
11. What’s the author’s purpose of writing the passage?
A. To promote a new medical treatment for diseases.
B. To analyse microplastic pollution level in the US.
C. To criticize the US government’s microplastic policies.
D. To warn people of microplastic’s potential health risks.
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. A 11. D

This February, ecologist Poisot was surprised when he read through the peer reviews (同行评议) of a manuscript (原稿) he had submitted for publication. One of the referee reports seemed to have been written with, or perhaps entirely by, artificial intelligence (AI). It contained a strong indication that the text was created by large language models (LLMs).
AI is increasingly being used in the peer review process of scientific papers, which involves experts evaluation to ensure they meet quality standards before they are published. This trend raises both interest and concerns among researchers and publishers.
AI systems are already transforming peer review. They are now being used to check errors in the text, data, code and references of manuscripts, to guide reviewers toward more-constructive feedback, and to polish their manuscripts. Some new websites even offer entire AI-created review s with one click, claiming to assess a paper’s quality and originality. One study of peer-review reports in 2024 found that between 7% and 17% of these reports showed evidence of changes beyond spell-checking or minor updates to the text by LLMs.
However, there are concerns about the reliability of AI in understanding complex scientific concepts and making accurate judgments. Critics argue that AI might not fully grasp the slight difference of scientific research and could lead to misleading conclusions. There is also a fear that AI could replace human reviewers, who can provide more insightful feedback.
Despite these concerns, many researchers believe AI can be a useful tool. It can help speed up the review process and reduce the workload on reviewers. AI can also identify potential issues that might be overlooked by human reviewers, allowing human reviewers to focus on more complex aspects of the review.
12. Why does the author mention Poisot’s experience in paragraph 1?
A. To present an argument. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To criticize the overuse of AI. D. To compare various AI tools.
13. What is AI currently used for in peer review?
A. Checking errors of manuscripts. B. Replacing human reviewers.
C. Guiding detailed steps for study. D. Assessing the peer reviews.
14. What’s the author’s attitude to AI in peer review?
A. Subjective. B. Objective. C. Approving. D. Critical.
15. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Will AI Take over Peer Review?
B. Is AI Review Faster and Cheaper?
C. Can AI Understand Complex Concept?
D. Do Scientists Fully Rely on AI Review?
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. B 15. A

【37题详解】
考查非谓语动词。句意:无论是小说、科学文章还是历史文献,阅读都有能力以深刻的方式改变我们的生活。have the ability to do sth.为固定搭配,意为“有能力做某事”,所以此处应用动词不定式作后置定语,修饰名词ability,表示“改变我们生活的能力”。故填to transform。

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was the day before Mom’s birthday, and 17-year-old Liam had promised to bake her favorite chocolate cake. For weeks, he had been learning baking secretly from online videos, determined to surprise her with a perfect homemade cake. The kitchen counter was already lined with fresh ingredients — flour, cocoa powder, and eggs — ready for his grand baking mission.
But just as Liam tied his apron (围裙), his phone rang. It was his best friend Mark, excitedly announcing he had gotten two tickets to the season’s biggest basketball game — the one they’d been dreaming of for months. “Come on! This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance!” Mark insisted. “You can bake the cake tomorrow morning before the party.”
Liam hesitated, glancing between the unopened flour bags and his phone. The game started in two hours, and the cake would take at least three to prepare. His fingers drummed nervously on the counter. “Mom would want me to have fun.” he reasoned. “Alright, I’m in!” he finally said, pushing aside his doubts.
The game was thrilling, and Liam didn’t get home until midnight. Exhausted, he set his alarm for 5 AM and fell asleep. But when he woke up, sunlight was already flooding his room — it was 9:30! The party he had promised his mom started at 11!
Panicked, Liam sprinted to the kitchen. There was no time to bake now. Then he saw it — a supermarket cake his dad had bought as backup (备用品). “Maybe if I decorate it nicely, mom will not notice.” he thought desperately. As he hurriedly decorated the cake with some frosting, his hands shook. Before he could react, the cake lost its balance and slipped on the floor. Liam’s heart sank. The kitchen was a disaster.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Hearing the noise, Mom entered the kitchen.

To his surprise, mom pulled him into a hug.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Hearing the noise, Mom entered the kitchen. Her eyes widened at the sight of the messy floor and the ruined cake. Liam stood frozen, his face flushed with guilt and fear. “Mom, I... I’m so sorry,” he stammered, lowering his head. “I promised to bake you a perfect cake, but I messed up everything. I went to the basketball game instead and overslept this morning. Then I tried to decorate the backup cake and...” His voice trailed off as he waited for her anger or disappointment.
To his surprise, mom pulled him into a hug. “Oh, Liam,” she said softly, “I’m not upset about the cake. I’m touched by your effort and the thought behind it. You’ve been learning baking secretly for weeks just to surprise me, and that means more to me than any perfect cake.” She gently wiped away his tears and continued, “The best gift is your love and care. Let’s clean up this mess together and make some new memories.” Liam smiled through his tears, feeling a warmth in his heart that no ruined cake could ever take away.

4. Why did the accident shock everyone?
A. The skiing resort had zero accidents in the past.
B. The accident occurred in a completely safe region.
C. Experienced skiers were rarely stuck in such situations.
D. Charles Smith ignored safety warnings of the accident.
5. What was the main reason for the avalanche accident?
A. The weather’s sudden change. B. The delayed arrival of rescue dogs.

9. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. Poverty alone explains the health risks.
B. Air pollution is directly related to the illnesses.
12 Why does the author mention Poisot’s experience in paragraph 1?

Panicked Liam sprinted to the kitchen.
