B Emma Carter, a 28-year-old fashion designer, first started exploring ways to reduce her expenses when she realized her monthly spending was higher than her income. She searched online for budgeting tips and money-saving strategies and soon discovered the world of cashback websites and loyalty programs, which she now uses regularly to save money on her everyday purchases. “I used to think that saving money meant giving up the things I enjoy,” Emma says. “But now I realize that with a little effort, I can still enjoy my favorite products and services while spending less. It’s all about being smart with your money.” Emma’s journey began in 2018 when she moved to a new city for work. Facing higher living costs, she decided to take control of her finances. She started by tracking her expenses and identifying areas where she could cut back. One of Emma’s favorite money-saving tricks is using cashback apps. After each purchase, she uploads (上传) a photo of her receipt to the app, which then checks it and offers cashback on items that qualify. “It’s like getting paid to shop,” she says. “I’ve earned hundreds of pounds just by doing something I would do anyway.” In addition to cashback apps, Emma also takes advantage of loyalty programs offered by her favorite stores. By collecting points every time she shops, she can exchange them for discounts or free products. “It’s a win-win situation,” she explains. “I get to save money while still buying the things I love.” “You don’t have to make huge changes to see a difference,” she says. “Even small savings can add up over time. The key is to stay the course and make saving a part of your daily routine.” 4. Why did Emma start to save money? A. She could not make ends meet. B. She was attracted by budgeting tips. C. She suffered a decrease in her income. D. She desired to change her job. 5. How does Emma earn cashback on her purchases? A. By shopping only during big sales. B. By uploading receipts to a cashback app. C. By applying for discounts from the cashiers. D. By returning unwanted items to stores. 6. Which words can best describe Emma? A. Energetic and creative. B. Generous and responsible. C. Determined and resourceful. D. Ambitious and adventurous. 7. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Saving money requires giving up some favorite products. B. Cashback apps are the most useful way to reduce expenses. C. Small, smart habits can lead to significant savings over time. D. People with high incomes should have money-saving strategies. C An important lesson in the moral education of children may be closer than we imagine — it could be right there in the books they are holding. Stories can be helpful for building moral values in young audiences, according to the result of a new study. “Media can greatly influence children’s moral values and get them to place more or less importance on the values according to what is uniquely stressed in that content.” says Lindsay Hahn, PhD, a professor in the University at Buffalo College of Arts and Sciences. Hahn is first author of the new study, which explores how media content influences children. Many previous studies have focused on wide ideas, like positive or negative effects of specific content. However, Hahn’s study looks at how reading of content featuring specific moral values (care, fairness, loyalty, and authority) might influence the weight that kids place on those values. Do children who read about particular moral characteristics absorb those qualities and build their own morality? The findings suggest so, and further support how this approach can help to teach the moral principles that kids might receive through formal instruction. For the study, Hahn and her team took the main character from a teen novel and edited the content to create four different story versions (版本). Each version showed one of four moral values that the study focused on. Then those stories were read by about 200 participants between the ages of 10 and 14. This age group is the best for media research. Hahn explained the reason, “It is more difficult for younger children to understand stories, while it is also challenging to hold the attention of older teenagers, who become bored with simple storylines.” The team then designed a scale (量表) to measure the importance that kids place on moral values, so as to determine how participants might be influenced by specific stories. 8. What is the result of the new study? A. Stories should be spread much more by media. B. Children learn moral values from their parents. C. Stories help young readers develop moral values. D. Children like reading books full of funny stories. 9. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 3? A. The branches of media research. B. The comparison with previous studies. C The impact on children’s literature. D. The response of the public to the study. 10. Why did the researchers choose participants aged from 10 to 14? A. Their moral values cannot be easily influenced. B. They are in a critical stage of moral development. C. This age group has better moral values than others. D. They can understand the stories and won’t lose interest. 11. Where does this passage probably come from? A. A travel guide. B. A school textbook. C. An education magazine. D. A children’s storybook. D Axolotls (蝾螈) — the cute and charming creatures made famous by the video game “Minecraft” — are in a free fall. Pollution, modern farming, and the introduction of invasive (入侵的) fish that hunt and eat the endangered species have reduced their habitat to the waterways of a single lake in Mexico. But a new study is offering a flash of hope: axolotls raised by people can survive in the wild, Justine McDaniel reported for The Washington Post. “This is a huge step because in conservation programs when you have animals raised by people and you take them back to the wild... there are a lot of deaths,” Alejandra Ramos, the study’s lead author said. Axolotls have long been bred in labs and are popular pets, but increasing their numbers in the wild has proven to be a much greater challenge. The study stuck radio transmitters onto 18 axolotls that would allow them to be tracked, then set free eight into Mexico City’s Lake Xochimilco and 10 into a man-made wetland. At least twice a day for 40 days, researchers visited both sites to collect data. The researchers found that the axolotls introduced to a man-made pond also endured, a promising finding for the potential of artificial wetlands to aid axolotl conservation, the study authors said. That finding matters if their habitat doesn’t recover or if climate change worsens, Esther Quintero, a Conservation International-Mexico biologist said. Conservation International is supporting a project in Lake Xochimilco to bring back the axolotl’s natural habitat by returning to ancestral farming practices. By supporting farmers’ change to pesticide-free farming and helping put in biofilters (生物过滤器) to clean the water, the project aims to restore these waters so axolotls can live well in the future. “Saving the axolotl goes beyond liking this creature that is really lovely,” Quintero said. “There is no future for any species without its habitat.” 12. What may prevent Axolotls from going extinct according to the study? A. Hunting invasive fish B. Monitoring their life. C. A ban on hunting them. D. Feeding under human care. 13. What`s Alejandra Ramos’ attitude to the finding? A. Negative. B. Unclear. C. Supportive. D. Unconcerned. 14. What does the underlined word “endured” mean in Paragraph 4? A Survived. B. Escaped. C. Approached. D. Responded. 15. What’s the suitable title of the text? A. Axolotls: Target of Researchers B. Foreign Species: Threat to Axolotls C. Being Raised: Axolotls’ New Hope D. Habitat: Axolotls’ Surviving Key Holidays are a time to come together and make memories. ___16___ “Screens can be a barrier to true connection during the holidays,” says Hansa Bhargava, MD, an Atlanta-based pediatrician and spokesperson for the Center for Excellence in Media and Mental Health at the American Academy of Pediatrics. From the moment she could tap her tiny fingers on the piano keys, melodies (旋律) seemed to pour from her soul. Her parents were often amazed at her natural talent, and her music teacher, Mrs. Carlson, claimed she was a talent. Encouraged by their praise, Sophia decided to enter the Harmony Youth Music Competition. Months of preparation followed. Every day after school, Sophia practised tirelessly, her fingers dancing across the keys of the family’s old piano. Her chosen piece was a challenging one — Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. Though it tested her skills, she poured her heart into every note, determined to make it perfect. As the competition day neared, an unexpected guest began to shadow Sophia — anxiety. No matter how hard she practised, a small, continuing voice whispered doubts in her ear. What if you forget the notes? What if you make a mistake in front of everyone? On the day of the competition, her hands shook as she waited backstage. When her name was called, she walked to the grand piano under the spotlight, her heart pounding louder than the applause. She sat down, placed her fingers on the keys, and began to play. But halfway through, her mind went empty. Her fingers hesitated, hitting a sour note that echoed (回荡) through the silent hall. The whispers in her mind turned into a loud sound of self-doubt. Tears blurred (使视线模糊) her eyes as she performed the rest of the piece. When the performance ended, the polite applause felt like knives to her heart. She left the stage defeated. “I can’t do it,” she told Mrs. Carlson later that evening, crying into her hands. “I’m just not good enough.” Mrs. Carlson gently placed a hand on her shoulder. “Sophia, failure is not the end. It’s a stepping stone. Do you want to try again?” Sophia hesitated but then nodded. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ On the day of the local competition, Sophia felt nervous but ready. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$ 韩城市2024-2025学年度第二学期期末质量检测 高一英语试题 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? C. The impact on children’s literature. 8. C 9. B 10. D 11. A. Survived. B. Escaped. C. Approached. D. Responded. 15. What’s the suitable title of the text? A. Axolotls: Target of Researchers B. Foreign Species: Threat to Axolotls C. Being Raised: Axolotls’ New Hope D. Habitat: Axolotls’ Surviving Key 【答案】12. D 13. C 14. A 15. 故选A。 根据第一段“But a new study is offering a flash of hope: axolotls raised by people can survive in the wild, Justine McDaniel reported for The Washington Post. Holidays are a time to come together and make memories. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文 Sophia hesitated but then nodded. She knew deep down she couldn’t let one bad experience define her. With Mrs. Carlson’s encouragement, Sophia signed up for a smaller, local competition. This time, they focused not just on her technique but on building her confidence. Mrs. Carlson introduced Sophia to breathing exercises and visualization techniques to calm her nerves. Slowly but surely, Sophia began to feel a change within herself. On the day of the local competition, Sophia felt nervous but ready. As she stepped onto the stage, she took a deep breath, visualized the notes, and let her fingers glide over the keys. The anxiety was there, but she didn’t let it control her. The music flowed from her heart, and when she played the final note, the audience erupted into applause. Sophia won first place. More than the trophy, the experience taught her a lesson she would carry forever: failure is just a pause, not an ending. With perseverance and belief in oneself, even the most daunting challenges can be overcome. 词汇激活: 行为类 ①报名参加:sign up for/enter for ②关注:focus on/concentrate on ③爆发掌声:erupt into applause/burst into applause ④克服:overcome/get over 情绪类 担心:anxiety/worry/concern 【点睛】【高分句型1】As she stepped onto the stage, she took a deep breath, visualized the notes, and let her fingers glide over the keys.(使用了as引导时间状语从句) 【高分句型2】More than the trophy, the experience taught her a lesson she would carry forever: failure is just a pause, not an ending.
