B A 15-year-old Indian girl, Kumari, who pedalled her injured father more than a thousand kilometres across India, has been invited to try out for the national cycling team. In January, a motor-bike driver, Mohan Paswan, who made a living by carrying passengers in New Delhi, was injured in a traffic accident. After the accident, Paswan couldn't drive. So his daughter, Kumari took a train across the country to take care of him. But without income, Paswan could no longer afford the rent and they were running out of food. They decided to go home. With the last $20, the 15-year-old girl bought an old bicycle, and planned to take her father to their home village across India --- in a heroic, life-saving ride. Kumari rode a bicycle with her father, sitting on the pillion(后座)and holding their belongings from Gurugram city, near New Delhi, to their village in the northeastern state of Bihar. They arrived home on May 16 after covering 1,200 kilometres (745 miles) in seven days. The father and daughter's arduous journey on a second-hand bike bought with their remaining funds made headlines. It also caught the attention of the Cycling Federation of India, which offered Kumari the chance to try out for the country's team. "She covered this long and difficult distance in seven days with her father and some luggage too. I thought she has something in her endurance level. We can try her," chairman Onkar Singh told the journalist. “She said she only wants to pursue her studies. We told her that we also take care of studies at our academies. Singh said the federation would test Kumari to see if she is suitable for competitive cycling. There were also other people who praised Kumari's efforts, describing it as a "'beautiful model of endurance and love." 4. What made Kumari have to ride a bike back home? A. That her father was injured. B. That she could only afford a bike. C. That her home village was far away. D. That she wanted to join in the cycling race. 5. Which can best explain the underlined word "arduous " in paragraph 4? A. dangerous B. lovely C. pleasant D. tough 6. Why did Onkar Singh invite Kumari to try out for the national cycling team? A. Because she has extraordinary physical ability. B. Because he didn't have anyone better than her. C. Because she only wants to pursue her studies. D. Because she is suitable for competitive cycling. 7. What can best describe Kumari according to the passage? A. strong and caring B. positive and confident C. warm-hearted and brave D. hard-working and beautiful C Everyone goes through it: standing in front of the mirror, looking at eye bags and pulling at folds of loose skin. Am I looking a bit rough? It’s part of the human condition to fear ageing, but among millennials (千禧一代), there seems to be a huge anxiety around growing older, coupled with an increasingly casual attitude towards cosmetic (整容的) treatments compared with previous generations. In 2022, 27% of US patients receiving beauty treatments were 34 or younger, compared with 21% in 2015. The idea is to stop wrinkles (皱纹) before they start. So why are we all so eager to pretend we’re not growing older? There is a widespread and largely unnecessary fear of ageing. Being always online and scrolling (滚动) through the lives of others must also be a factor. It keeps us locked into a constant state of comparison. Then, the stream of bad news on war and the climate crisis is making us all depressed, anxious and nervous about dying. But these treatments often don’t come with warnings; it’s up to the customer to research possible danger. Unsuccessful cosmetic procedures among young people are on the rise, with too many treatments taking place in illegal beauty salons and carried out by unqualified practitioners (从业人员). Last month, three women in the US got infected with HIV because the illegal medical clinic reused needles that should have been disposed of. It caused understandable alarm worldwide. The pursuit of youth keeps many of us upset. And though I support that women have the freedom to choose cosmetic treatments, looking young is not a cure for all life’s troubles. I’m trying to reject the message that it’s wrong for women to look their true age, but the choice may mean a future ruined by self-doubt, expensive treatments or even regret. I think I’ll stick with the eye bags. 8. How does the author introduce the topic? A. By telling a story. B. By describing a scene. C. By asking a question. D. By giving an example. 9. What contribute to the increasing anxiety about ageing among the young? A. High prices in beauty salons. B. Difficulty in getting cosmetic treatments. C. Limited access to news about world affairs. D. Constant comparison caused by social media. 10. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about? A. Regular cosmetic procedures. B. Harmful results of infection. C. Possible risks of cosmetic treatments. D. Unsuccessful cosmetic procedures. 11. What does the author want to express in the last paragraph? A. It’s wise for women to accept their true age. B. Cosmetic treatments are generally worthwhile. C. The desire to keep young will lead to regret. D. The importance of appearance is overlooked. D Imagine waking up one morning to find your smartphone missing. You can no longer get guided to work, order your coffee, or connect with friends. For most of us, it is a nightmare (噩梦). But it should not be exactly far-fetched. Despite being more digitally connected than ever we are lonelier and more anxious. Anxiety rates increased by 25% globally. Depression now affects over 280 million people worldwide. All of this is due to our growing dependence on social media and smart technologies designed to offer quick relief but often at the expense of deep, meaningful engagement, which may further cause our loss of something easy to be ignored. Though these conveniences offer short-term relief, they may weaken our thinking skills. For example, GPS has undoubtedly changed how we travel. But a 2020 study found that frequent GPS users struggle more with self-guided navigation (航行). Over time, those who depended more on GPS showed a sharp loss in special memory and problem-solving skills. However, reducing dependence on these conveniences can lead to discomfort. In seeking comfort today, we might be trading away some discomfort. That is the problem: the very discomfort we avoid is often what strengthens us. Viewing stress, a kind of discomfort, as a challenge rather than a threat leads to better results. Research shows that mild stress can improve adaptability (适应性). Neuroscience (神经科学) shows that neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to form new connections — is improved through challenging experiences. This adaptability is important for developing resilience (抗逆力), a process fueled by both mental challenges and active effort. But this doesn’t mean we should reject comfort entirely; it’s to balance it with intentional discomfort. Think of it as “microdosing hardship” — a series of small, manageable difficulties that keep our mental and emotional muscles strong, such as writing with a pen, or washing dishes by hand. These small acts are enough to reawaken the resilience we’ve buried under layers of ease. So, the next time you feel the pull of ease, pause. Ask yourself: Is this momentary comfort helping me grow or is it keeping me stuck? Choosing discomfort isn’t easy, but sometimes, it’s worth it. 12. What does the underlined word “far-fetched” in Paragraph I probably mean? A. Possible to change. B. Certain to function. C. Unlikely to be settled. D. Unable to be accepted. 13. What may digital conveniences cause according to the text? A. The meaningful engagement. B. The fast but worthless relief. C. The lack of necessary comfort. D. The loss of thinking ability. 14. Which is a real-life application of “microdosing hardship”? A. Taking the stairs instead of the lift. B. Ordering take-out food after work. C. Writing an email using voice-to-text. D. Exploring a new city by using GPS. 15. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. GPS: the invisible (隐形的) cost of convenience. B. Stress: the main cause of brain damage. C. Discomfort: a hidden source of resilience. D. Smartphones: barriers (障碍) to human progress. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Simplify Housework It can be frustrating when you feel like you spend more time cleaning, tidying up, and taking care of your house and belongings than actually enjoying them. ____16____ That said, with the following tips, you can simplify your housework and have a clean home without devoting all of your time to cleaning. Then I smelt something delicious—the hot dog stand at the street corner. “One hot dog, please!” I nearly rushed to the stand. “OK, ready soon!” The vendor (摊主) replied cheerfully. As he handed me the hot dog, he grinned, “You deserve the best hot dog in the world!” I guessed that was the slogan for his little business, for the words were painted in cheerful yellow letters on his cart. I couldn’t wait to take a bite. The warm bread, the chilli sauce and the juice in the sausage — it was the best thing in the world! Definitely at that time! “Five dollars, young lady,” the vendor said, wiping his hands on his apron. Hot dog in one hand, I reached for my wallet with the other. Just then, “Ouch!” a cry came from behind me. I turned back and found a woman in her 50’s struggling to pick herself up from the ground. Her grocery bag split open with oranges rolling in every direction. Seeing this, I stuffed the rest of the hot dog into my mouth, picked up the oranges and put them back into her bag. “Are you okay?” I asked with concern. “Thank you. I didn’t see the pole on the ground,” she breathed. Noticing her hand was wounded, I remembered the Band-Aid(创可贴)in my bag and dug it out. “Thank you so much for your kindness,” the woman said as I carefully applied it to her wound. Across the street, the bus I was about to take was pulling in. Waving a goodbye to the woman, I dashed to the bus stop and barely got aboard before the door closed. As the bus pulled away, I saw the woman bought a hot dog from the same vendor. On the way, I was always wondering if she would be greeted with the same words, “You deserve the best hot dog in the world!” I was lost in it... 注意: 1.续写词数应为150个左右; 2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 But wait — had I forgotten something? ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “Someone has paid for it,” the vendor smiled. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 二〇二四学年第二学期奉化区期末联考高一 英语试题 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项。听完每段对话后,你都有10秒钟的时间来回答有关小题和阅读下一小题,每段对话仅读一遍。 例:How much is the shirt? My heart suddenly sank as I realized I hadn’t paid the vendor! Frantically checking my wallet, I confirmed the five dollars were still there. The scene flashed back: I had dropped the wallet while helping the woman. The bus was already moving, and I could do nothing but watch the hot dog stand shrink in the distance, guilt overwhelming me. “Someone has paid for it,” the vendor smiled. Puzzled, I followed his gaze to the woman I had helped earlier. She waved at me warmly from the street corner. The vendor explained, “She insisted on paying for you, saying kindness deserves kindness.” Tears welled up as I understood — her hot dog purchase wasn’t just for herself. The vendor’s cheerful slogan now carried profound meaning, weaving our small acts of goodwill into something truly “the best in the world.” 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
