National Elephant Appreciation Day
Next date: September 22, 2025
Official website: https: //elephantconservation.org/event/elephant-appreciation-day/
National Elephant Appreciation Day is a time to honor elephants, raise awareness about their difficult situation, and encourage further efforts to save this species from extinction. It’s also the perfect time to promote sustainable(可持续性的) tourism practices and companies that encourage the protection of elephants.
Elephants are the largest land animals in the world, which has made them a main target for illegal hunters. In fact, the ivory(象牙) trade alone is thought to be worth $23 billion yearly. Additional threats include habitat loss and human-elephant conflict. There are two species of elephant; the Asian and the African, with both seeing rapid population declines.
How you can get involved:
Visit an elephant shelter: Take a trip to an elephant shelter and see first-hand the beauty of these animals up close. You can even consider volunteering your time too. Just ensure you only visit responsible elephant shelters that don’t carry out harmful tourist activities such as elephant riding and animal performances.
Learn more about elephants: Make a point to learn more about elephants to increase your understanding of their unique needs.
Promote elephant protection and awareness: Spread awareness of global protection efforts to save elephants and promote further action. You can also consider setting up a fundraising event in your local community.
Adopt(领养)an elephant: Many zoos and shelters allow you to symbolically adopt an elephant in need to help pay for their care. This makes a wonderful gift for someone who loves elephants, some even offer a toy as a thank you, as well as regular updates so you can see how well your adoptee is doing.
1. What is the primary purpose of National Elephant Appreciation Day?
A. To promote elephant tourism.
B. To sell elephant-related products.
C. To encourage people to visit zoos.
D. To protect elephants and stress their struggles.
2. Which activity is encouraged when visiting elephant shelters?
A. Riding elephants. B. Buying ivory products.
C. Volunteering responsibly. D. Watching animal performances.
3. What benefit is mentioned when symbolically adopting an elephant?

At age 14, McKenna “Mak” Whitham has become the youngest player to appear in a National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) match. She came on as a substitute (替补) for NJ/NY Gotham FC in the remaining minutes of the club’s 1-1 tie with Seattle Reign on March 15, which was opening match day for the 2025 NWSL season. The former record was set by Olivia Moultrie, who debuted (首次出场) for the Portland Thorns at age 15 in 2021.
Whitham is from Granite Bay, California, and she began playing soccer at an early age with support from her parents. Her father, who was the youngest member of a US Olympic ski team at age 15, has guided her training, while her mother home-schools her to allow more flexibility for soccer. Whitham has played for the Slammers FC and the semi-pro team Santa Clarita Blue Heat, and she is a member of the Under-15 youth national team.
Gotham FC signed Whitham to a four-year contract (合同) last year when she was 13. The contract became effective in January 2025, making Whitham the youngest player on a NWSL team roster. She is also the youngest athlete in any sport to sign a name, image, and likeness contract with Nike.
Because Whitham is under 18, she follows special regulations set by the league, which are meant to protect her while she plays professionally. She has regular medical examinations, for example, and she also has her own locker room. It’s near the main locker room that her teammates use, allowing her to join in on team spirit.
As the season progresses, Whitham will continue training with the team and hopes to earn more playing time. She said she was proud of her historic debut, which she called “a dream come true.” “Standing on the sideline and waiting to get on the field was pretty exciting,” she said. “I wanted to be out there and was ready.”
4. What can we know about McKenna Whitham’s parents?
A. Her mother trains her for soccer.
B. Her father is strict with her soccer training.
C. Her father was a member of a US Olympic soccer team.
D. Her mother teaches her at home for soccer training convenience.
5. What does the underlined word “roster” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. List. B. Schedule. C. Contract. D. Club.
6. How does McKenna Whitham feel about her debut?
A. She is proud and excited.
B. She is nervous and unsure.
C. She is dissatisfied with her debut.
D. She is worried about the challenges ahead.
7. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. The Future of Women’s Soccer
B. Special Regulations for Young Athletes
C. A Young Soccer Talent’s Historic Debut
D. The Importance of Family Support in Sports

Off the coast of Donegal lies Owey Island, a car-free place that was last inhabited (居住) full-time in the 1970s. Today, it’s being revived by locals and adventurous travelers seeking a simpler life. Accessible only by private boat, the island has no electricity or running water, offering a sharp contrast to modern living.
In its golden age, Owey was home to around 100 residents and 30 families. However, the attraction of the mainland’s conveniences caused it to be deserted in 1977. The island remained inactive for over 25 years.
It was not until pioneering locals like Paul Cowan decided to restore it that things began to change. Paul Cowan spent his teenage years there. Cowan and his family had moved to Owey in the 1970s to avoid the political and social unrest in Belfast. In the early 2000s, he and his brother returned to fix up their family home and build new houses. Their efforts inspired other descendants of the island to restore the island to its former honor. Now, around 20 homes stand, with a seasonal community of 20-30 people living there during warmer months.
The island’s isolation (隔绝) attracts those seeking a break from modern life. Visitors can stay at the Owey Island Cottage Hostel or camp nearby. The hostel, once the last inhabited house, keeps much of its original furniture and offers basic devices (设施) like a gas stove and toilet. Locals like Frankie Gallagher, who divides his time between Owey and the mainland, accept a simpler lifestyle, using gas, solar power, and rainwater tanks. This lifestyle means beautiful sunsets and starry nights, free from light pollution.
Owey’s rough landscape offers activities like travelling through sea caves, rock climbing, and hill walking. The island’s southern end is grassy and rich, with a small harbor, while the northern end is rocky and stony. The island also has a lake with grand sea views, a perfect spot for a refreshing swim.
8. What kind of life is described in Paragraph 1?
A. Basic and isolated. B. Busy and stressful.
C. Modern and convenient. D. Technologically advanced.
9. Why did Cowan and his family relocate to Owey in the 1970s?
A To enjoy the beautiful views.
B. To escape the troubles in Belfast.
C. To develop tourism on the island.
D. To restore the island’s former glory.
10. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. The history of Owey Island.
B. The lifestyle of the island’s residents.
C. The efforts to restore the island’s homes.
D. The activities and landscape of Owey Island.
11. Where is this text most likely from?
A. A science journal. B. A travel magazine.
C. A historical textbook. D. A government report.
D
If you live near a body of water in the northern place, you likely have heard of your local polar bear club, usually made up of a group of strong swimmers who take part in cold water swimming. Submerging (浸入) in cold water dates back to ancient civilizations, with the first documented evidence appearing in an Egyptian text in 3,000 BC. Fast forward to modern times, a group of swimmers founded the first cold water swimming organization in the U.S. in 1903. Today, the Coney Island Polar Bear Club still holds weekly ocean swims from November to April.
Cold-water swimmers say that swimming in icy water is good for you. It helps reduce muscle pain, improves sleep, and increases your energy. But what does the evidence say? A growing body of research proves that jumping into cold water is good for you, especially for your feeling and how well your brain works.
In a study published this year in the journal Physiology & Behavior, 13 healthy subjects submerged themselves in 10-degree Celsius water for 10 minutes, three times per week. Researchers measured participants’ (参与者) mental performance, self-reported well-being, sleep quality and worry. They found participants’ thinking processing speed and mental flexibility improved over the four weeks of the study. Participants said they had less trouble sleeping and felt less worried.
Two earlier studies back up these findings. In the first, participants reported a significant decrease in negative emotions like tension, anger, depression, tiredness and confusion after a 20-minute swim in cold ocean water. In the second study, participants who submerged in a cold bath for five minutes reported feeling more active, attentive, proud and inspired.
What’s going on here? Researchers don’t exactly know. However, it’s important to know that cold-water swimming can be risky. It can lead to problems such as getting too cold, breathing too quickly, and having muscle cramps (痉挛). It’s important never to swim in a body of open water alone, and to check with your doctor first if you have any ongoing health conditions.
12. What is the main activity of the local polar bear club?
A. Watching polar bears. B. Swimming in cold water.
C. Organizing sports events. D. Protecting the local environment.
13. What can be inferred about the benefits of cold-water swimming?
A. It is mainly beneficial to athletes.
B. It helps improve school achievement.
C. It has little significant impact on mental health.
D. It can improve your feeling and thinking ability.
14. What is the function of Paragraph 4?
A. To compare the findings of different studies.
B. To explain the research methods used in the studies.
C. To give more evidence for cold-water swimming benefits.
D. To introduce a new topic unrelated to cold-water swimming.
15. What is the author’s attitude towards cold-water swimming?
A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Supportive. D. Negative.

第二节 续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sophie ran her fingers over the horse chestnut tree(马栗树), whose branches spread out wide. She’d lived in this neighborhood all her life and now, in her early twenties, was gaining experience in her job as a tree doctor.
“No amount of tree-hugging will save this one.” Aiden’s voice broke into her thoughts. “The roots are dead, and the branches are decaying(腐烂). Nothing for it-it’ll have to come down,” Aiden said.
“There must be another way,” Sophie responded, trying to sound confident.
Aiden shook his head.
Sophie said, “At least let me take a closer look at the top branches. The leaves up there might be healthier.”
Aiden sighed. “OK, but if the disease has spread too far...” His words faded away.
“Well, you know the result.”
Sophie nodded, though she felt sad. She wanted to preserve trees, not destroy them. Fortunately, her job wasn’t always about cutting trees down. Sometimes, it was about giving them a new chance to live, and this tree was especially important to her. It had been the meeting place in the park for her and her friends during school holidays, providing the shelter they needed when the days were hot.
With these thoughts in mind, Sophie put on her climbing tools and prepared to climb. As she climbed the tree, she carefully checked each branch and leaf, searching for any sign of hope. But the closer she looked, the more she realized Aiden was right-the disease had indeed spread far and wide. Her heart sank as she accepted the truth.
When Sophie finally climbed down, Aiden was waiting for her with a look of pity. “I’m sorry, Sophie,” he said softly, as if sensing her emotional connection to the tree. “But you know what we have to do.”
Sophie nodded, her eyes welling up with tears. She took a deep breath to compose herself and then suggested, “Let’s plant a new tree in its place, to honor its memory. And we could put up a sign with a message on it.”
注意:
1.续写词数应150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Aiden was surprised by her idea but quickly nodded in agreement.

A. Basic and isolated. B. Busy and stressful.
C. Modern and convenient. D. Technologically advanced.

C. To develop tourism on the island.

10. What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. The history of Owey Island.
B. The lifestyle of the island’s residents.
C. The efforts to restore the island’s homes.
D. The activities and landscape of Owey Island.

A. Doubtful. B. Objective. C. Supportive. D. Negative.
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. C 15. B

故填are arranged。

【答案】Dear Peter,
It’s exciting to share our new Campus Garden Project with you! Previously empty corners now burst with green areas where vegetables like tomatoes and carrots grow. Students water plants during breaks, making our campus livelier than ever.
Through this project, I’ve learned basic planting techniques and teamwork. However, the physical work was challenging initially — digging under the sun left me exhausted! Thankfully, classmates shared tools and encouraged one another, which taught me problem-solving through cooperation.
What special hands-on activities does your school organize? Any environmental projects or volunteer programs? Can’t wait to hear about your school activities!
Yours,
Li Hia

“There must be another way” Sophie responded, trying to sound confident.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

【答案】Aiden was surprised by her idea but quickly nodded in agreement. “That’s a great idea Sophie. We can plant a young horse chestnut tree right here and give it a fresh start.” Sophie felt a sign of hope. They decided to plant the new tree the next day. After work, Sophie went to the local plant store and picked out a young tree. She also wrote a heartfelt message for the sign: “In memory of the old horse chestnut tree, the new tree is planted to honor its legacy and bring joy to future generations.”
The next morning, Sophie and Aiden worked together to plant the young tree. They carefully dug a hole, placed the young tree in it, and filled it with soil. And then they watered it. As they stood back to admire their work, Sophie felt a sense of peace wash over her. She knew that while the old tree was gone, its spirit lived on in the new one, and in the hearts of all who had known and loved it. Aiden placed a comforting arm around her shoulder, and together, they walked away, leaving the new tree to grow in the park.
