The Most Popular National Parks in the US
Mount Rainier National Park
Located in Washington, Mount Rainier National Park is America’s fifth-oldest national park. Visit in the spring, and you’ll see waterfalls; come in the summer, and you’ll enjoy wildflowers; or arrive in the fall when the leaves put on a colorful show.
Joshua Tree National Park
Named for the trees native to the park, 1,200-square-mile Joshua Tree National Park in California is slightly larger than the state of Rhode Island. Much of the park is wilderness and includes parts of two deserts, the higher Mojave Desert and the lower Colorado Desert. There are 12 self-guided nature trails (小径), some as short as a half-mile, perfect for young children.
Bryce Canyon (峡谷) National Park
Despite its name, Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah is not a canyon at all. Instead, it is a collection of giant natural rocks up to 150 feet high. The red, orange and white colors of the rocks make for breathtaking views throughout the park. You can explore the rock formations on a scenic drive or up close and personally on a hike.
Grand Teton National Park
Located in Wyoming, Grand Teton National Park is home to various wildlife like bears, moose, otters and elk. There are several stand-out hiking trails. This park is connected to Yellowstone National Park by the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway, so it’s incredibly easy to visit both parks in one trip.
1. Where is Joshua Tree National Park?
A. In California. B. In Washington.
C. In Wyoming. D. In Utah.
2. What is Bryce Canyon National Park famous for?
A. Huge waterfalls. B. Various wildlife.
C. Unique rocks. D. Mojave Desert.
3. Which of the following is closest to Yellowstone National Park?

Finnish Lapland, in the far north of Europe, is home to some 180, 000 people and around 200, 000 reindeer (驯鹿) . The animals live wild but each one has an owner, identified by a mark on its ear. Anne Ollila, 50, one of 4, 000 such owners, works in the Finnish part of this region with her husband and two adult sons and their families. They farm the animals mainly for meat, but reindeer tourism has also become an important source of income.
Ollila lives 80 kilometres inside the Arctic Circle, an hour from Lapland’s capital city, Rovaniemi, and seven kilometres from her nearest neighbour. Summer days — when the reindeer raisers earmark newborn reindeer—are long and in June the sun never sets. At that time Ollila sleeps during the day and walks up to 20 kilometres a night through the forest, making the most of the cooler temperatures to do her work but having to endure large groups of insects along the way.
In deepest winter, there is little daylight. Many grasslands are frozen and the reindeer move into the forest for protection against wolves and golden eagles — the birds can kill an adult reindeer.
Ollila and her family offer tourists reindeer experiences through their company Reindeer Journey. Visitors can get close to the animals in the wild or at their farm, watching them being trained to pull sledges (雪橇) or take a sleigh ride.
“Reindeer are very smart animals, ” Ollila says. “They have different personalities, and some are very funny. ” One of her favourites is Rocky, named after the movie boxing legend. “He’s very curious and always in trouble, ” she says. “He once got himself stuck in tree branches and had to be lifted out, and he has been known to walk off with his owners’ drying underwear. ”
Ollila gave up her job as a sociology researcher at the University of Lapland in 2010 to devote herself to raising reindeer. “I love the environment, the animals and the freedom, ” she says. “Also, I have a sense of belonging to something bigger than me, to a way of life through the generations. ”
4. What does the underlined word “endure” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Go away with. B. Put up with. C. Look forward to. D. Catch up with.
5. Why do the reindeer move into the forest in winter according to the text?
A. To protect themselves. B. To find their owners.
C. To get earmarked. D. To avoid cold temperatures.
6. What does Ollila think of Rocky?
A. He is afraid of his owner. B. He is a famous filmmaker.
C. He is interested in planting trees. D. He is a troublemaker.
7. What can we infer about Ollila from the last paragraph?
A. She has been a sociology researcher since 2010. B. She has long been tired of raising reindeer.
C. She has a deep feeling for nature. D. She had no chance to receive a college education.
B 5. A 6. D 7. C
根据画线词上文“At that time Ollila sleeps during the day and walks up to 20 kilometres a night through the forest, making the most of the cooler temperatures to do her work but having to(在那个时候,奥利拉白天睡觉,晚上在森林里步行20公里,利用最凉爽的温度来完成她的工作)”及画线词后文“large groups of insects along the way(一路上大群的昆虫)”以及but表示转折,可知奥利拉利用晚上来完成工作,但是要忍受大群的昆虫。
根据第三段“In deepest winter, there is little daylight. Many grasslands are frozen and the reindeer move into the forest for protection against wolves and golden eagles — the birds can kill an adult reindeer.(在深冬,几乎没有日光。许多草原都被冻结了,驯鹿为了躲避狼和金雕而进入森林——金雕可以杀死一只成年驯鹿)”可知,驯鹿在冬天进入森林是为了保护自己。故选A。
根据第五段“One of her favourites is Rocky, named after the movie boxing legend. “He’s very curious and always in trouble, ” she says. “He once got himself stuck in tree branches and had to be lifted out, and he has been known to walk off with his owners’ drying underwear. ”(她最喜欢的一个是洛基,以电影拳击传奇人物的名字命名。“他很好奇,总是惹麻烦,”她说。“它曾经被困在树枝上,不得不被人抬出来,它还曾偷走主人正在晾晒的内衣。”)” 可知,Ollila认为Rocky总是闯祸。故选D。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Ollila gave up her job as a sociology researcher at the University of Lapland in 2010 to devote herself to raising reindeer. “I love the environment, the animals and the freedom, ” she says. “Also, I have a sense of belonging to something bigger than me, to a way of life through the generations. ”(2010年,奥利拉放弃了拉普兰大学社会学研究员的工作,全身心地投入到驯鹿饲养中。“我喜欢这里的环境、动物和自由,”她说。“而且,我有一种归属感,属于比我更重要的东西,属于世代相传的生活方式。”)” 可推断,Ollila对大自然有着深厚的感情。故选C。
C
Over the years, movies and books have used tornadoes to sweep their characters off to magical lands, to destroy entire cities, or to defeat a superhero’s dangerous super villain (恶棍) . All of these tornadoes have one thing in common: They are incredibly powerful. They can have wind speeds over 300 miles per hour (mph) , grow over a mile wide, and travel over 50 miles. They are incredibly dangerous and should be avoided at all costs.
Scientists can’t go inside tornadoes, which means that they are extremely hard to research. As a result, we know surprisingly little about them. In order to tell how powerful a tornado is, scientists look at how much destruction it causes. Scientists then rank the tornado on the Enhanced Fujita Scale (级别) (EF-Scale) , which ranges fromEF0 to EF5. For example, a tornado that only damages trees but doesn’t significantly damage buildings would be rated EFO with wind speeds between 65 and 85 mph. A tornado that blows away buildings and tears up sidewalks, on the other hand, would be rated EF5 with wind speeds over 200 mph.
The most powerful tornado in United States history occurred near Oklahoma City in 1999. It had wind speeds over 310 mph, the highest wind speed ever recorded on Earth. A tornado with wind speeds that high can not only pick up and throw automobiles, but also knock over trains and tear up roadways.
Luckily for anyone living in an area that experiences the occasional tornadoes, they usually only last one to ten minutes. More powerful tornadoes can last over an hour in the right conditions, but they are very rare.
If you find yourself experiencing a tornado, find a safe place inside, like an interior hall, basement or closet. Stay away from windows and heavy objects that could fall on you, and lie on your stomach with your hands protecting the back of your head. Having a tornado emergency plan is extremely important as tornadoes can appear very quickly. Make sure to listen to the radio or television to stay updated on serious weather patterns in your area.
8. Which of the following is probably the wind speed of an EF4 tornado?
A. 200 mph. B. 85 mph. C. 65 mph. D. 310 mph.
9. What can we learn from the example given in paragraph 3?
A. Oklahoma City had no trains in 1999. B. American cars need developing.
C. Tornadoes can do great harm. D. The strongest tornado occurred in the UK.
10. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. What to do during a tornado. B. How a tornado forms.
C. What a tornado is. D. How to recognize a tornado.
11. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. A guidebook. B. A science report. C. A movie review. D. A history book.
A 9. C 10. A 11. B
根据文章第二段中的“For example, a tornado that only damages trees but doesn’t significantly damage buildings would be rated EF0 with wind speeds between 65 and 85 mph.A tornado that blows away buildings and tears up sidewalks, on the other hand, would be rated EF5 with wind speeds over 200 mph.(例如,一场只破坏树木但不会严重破坏建筑物的龙卷风将被评为EF0,风速在65至85英里/小时之间。另一方面,吹走建筑物并撕裂人行道的龙卷风将被评为EF5级,风速超过200英里/小时。)”可知,既然EF0级龙卷风风速在65至85英里/小时之间,EF5级龙卷风风速超过200英里/小时,那么EF4级别的龙卷风风速可能是200 mph左右,其他选项都不正确。故选A项。
根据第三段中的“It had wind speeds over 310 mph, the highest wind speed ever recorded on Earth. A tornado with wind speeds that high can not only pick up and throw automobiles, but also knock over trains and tear up roadways.(它的风速超过每小时310英里,是地球上有记录以来的最高风速。风速如此之高的龙卷风不仅可以卷起并抛起汽车,还可以撞倒火车,撕毁道路。)”可知,本段的例子告诉我们:龙卷风的危害很大。故选C项。
【10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“If you find yourself experiencing a tornado, find a safe place inside, like an interior hall, basement or closet. Stay away from windows and heavy objects that could fall on you, and lie on your stomach with your hands protecting the back of your head. Having a tornado emergency plan is extremely important as tornadoes can appear very quickly. Make sure to listen to the radio or television to stay updated on serious weather patterns in your area.(如果你发现自己正在经历龙卷风,在室内找一个安全的地方,比如室内大厅、地下室或壁橱。远离窗户和可能砸到你的重物,趴着用手保护后脑勺。有一个龙卷风应急计划是非常重要的,因为龙卷风会很快出现。一定要收听广播或电视,及时了解你所在地区恶劣天气的最新情况。)”可知,本段主要介绍了龙卷风来时我们应该做什么。故选A项。
通读全文以及根据第一段“All of these tornadoes have one thing in common: They can have wind speeds over 300 miles per hour (mph), grow over a mile wide, and travel over 50 miles. They are incredibly dangerous and should be avoided at all costs.(所有这些龙卷风都有一个共同点:它们的风速可以超过每小时300英里,生长宽度超过一英里,行进距离超过50英里。它们非常危险,应该不惜一切代价避免。)”可知,文章主要介绍了什么是龙卷风以及如何应对龙卷风。所以本文可能来自于一份科学报告。故选B项。
D
When Adele released (发行) her 2011 single Someone Like You, this bittersweet song is popular with millions worldwide. More than a decade later, it remains one of her most popular songs. Her artistry, as well as that of many others who have mastered the art of making listeners feel moved with slow and emotional beats, has a way of managing the emotional pain of heartbreak and loss.
Listening to favorite songs could also reduce people’s feelings of pain, according to a new study published in the journal Frontiers in Pain Research. And the most effective pain relievers were found to be sad songs detailing bittersweet and emotional experiences.
“It doesn’t take the place of medicine when you have a headache, but music can help reduce your pain,” said Patrick Stroman, a professor at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He didn’t join in the study. “Unlike other medications,” he noted, “there is no side effect or risk in listening to music (just keep the volume at a reasonable level).”
The small study invited 63 young adults to bring one of their favorite songs. The researchers also had the young adults pick one of seven songs that the team considered relaxing and were unfamiliar to the study participants. All the while, the researchers stuck a hot object — similar to the pain of a boiling hot teacup on the participants’ skin — to their left inner forearms. When rating their experiences, people were more likely to report feeling less pain when listening to their favorite songs compared with hearing the unfamiliar relaxing songs.
With millions of songs available, one person’s favorite song is likely not the same as another. After interviewing the participants about the song they brought and their rating of pain, the researchers found people who listened to bittersweet and moving songs felt less pain than when they listened to songs with calming or cheerful themes (主题).
“It’s a very cool result,” said lead study author Darius Valevicius, a doctoral student of neurosciences at the University of Montreal. “I think it’s why I myself and probably many people choose to listen to bittersweet or even spiritual music.”
12. Why does the author mention Adele in the first paragraph?
A. To reach a conclusion. B. To lead in the topic.
C. To offer a suggestion. D. To provide the background.
13. What is Stroman’s attitude to the effect of listening to music?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Unclear. D. Unconcerned.
14. What did the participants do in the new study?
A. They reported their feelings of pain. B. They interviewed many musicians.
C. They made various kinds of teacups. D. They picked out the music they don't like.
15. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. When Is the Best Time to Listen to Music?
B. How Do You Create Popular Songs Quickly?
C. The Best Way to Reduce Pain Might Be to Write Music
D. Certain Types of Music Could Help You Feel Less Pain
B 13. B 14. A 15. D
根据第一段“When Adele released (发行) her 2011 single Someone Like You, this bittersweet song is popular with millions worldwide. More than a decade later, it remains one of her most popular songs. Her artistry, as well as that of many others who have mastered the art of making listeners feel moved with slow and emotional beats, has a way of managing the emotional pain of heartbreak and loss.(当阿黛尔在2011年发行单曲《Someone Like You》时,这首苦乐参半的歌曲受到了全球数百万人的欢迎。十多年后,这首歌仍然是她最受欢迎的歌曲之一。她的艺术,以及其他许多掌握了用缓慢而情绪化的节奏让听众感到感动的艺术的人,有一种管理心碎和失去的情感痛苦的方法。)”可推断,作者在第一段提到Adele是为了引出话题,说明她的音乐能够引起听众的情感共鸣,并引出音乐对减轻疼痛的研究。故选B项。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段““It doesn’t take the place of medicine when you have a headache, but music can help reduce your pain,” said Patrick Stroman, a professor at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He didn’t join in the study. “Unlike other medications,” he noted, “there is no side effect or risk in listening to music (just keep the volume at a reasonable level).(当你头痛时,音乐不能代替药物,但音乐可以帮助减轻你疼痛,”安大略省金斯敦皇后大学的教授帕特里克·斯特罗斯曼说。他没有参加这项研究。“与其他药物不同,”他指出,“听音乐没有副作用或风险(只需将音量保持在合理的水平)。”)”可知,Stroman对于听音乐减轻痛苦的效果持“肯定的”态度。故选B项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“When rating their experiences, people were more likely to report feeling less pain when listening to their favorite songs compared with hearing the unfamiliar relaxing songs.(在评价他们的体验时,与听不熟悉的放松歌曲相比,人们更有可能在听自己喜欢的歌曲时感到更少的痛苦)”可知,研究的参与者会在实验中报告他们对于痛苦的感受。故选A项。
根据第二段“Listening to favorite songs could also reduce people’s feelings of pain, according to a new study published in the journal Frontiers in Pain Research. And the most effective pain relievers were found to be sad songs detailing bittersweet and emotional experiences.(根据发表在《疼痛研究前沿》杂志上的一项新研究,听喜欢的歌曲也可以减少人们的疼痛感。研究发现,最有效的止痛药是描述苦乐参半和情感经历的悲伤歌曲。)”可知,某些类型的音乐能够帮助你减轻痛苦。故短文的标题为“某些类型的音乐可以帮助你减轻疼痛”。故选D项。

Is there a right or wrong way on how to view art? Whether we admit it or not, we’ve all had that moment of uncertainty while viewing art. However, that you’re not an expert doesn’t mean you can’t understand art. ____16____.
Determine the basics
When you first see an artwork, identify some basic information about it. Try to determine its medium (材料). If it’s a painting, see if you can figure out the type of paint used. ____17____. These observations can build a foundation for better understanding.
____18____
Artists are masters of drawing attention. They usually have a plan for how your vision should move across the artwork. Taking note of what you notice first is a useful way to begin your experience. For example, it is said that Renaissance artists would refer to their paintings as “machines”. Their intention was to allow viewers to move their eyes smoothly through the work of art with clarity (清晰) and balance.
Do some homework
You don’t need a background in art to appreciate it, but having some knowledge doesn’t hurt, either. If a work of art catches your attention, do a little research, read an exhibition’s catalogue (目录) or speak to the art team. ____19____.
Feel the artwork
____20____. Is the artwork artful or dramatic? How does it affect your feelings? Do you feel sad, happy or angry? These questions require immediate reactions. They can be subjective, but they are worth considering, because art is about the artist communicating and expressing ideas.
A. Notice your eye movements
B. Spend some time with artists
C. All these can deepen your appreciation
D. Recognize your feelings as you first view the art
E. You can also identify the artist and when it was created
F. Try these tips next time you’re viewing art, and they might help you
G. You’d be surprised by the knowledge you can acquire when interpreting art

Max arrived at an office, for his first interview. He used to live with his parents. He was frustrated with his parents blaming him for every little thing he did at home.
While waiting for the interview, he was thinking, “Only if I succeed in today’s interview will I say goodbye to my parents’ house and settle down in the big city, which will let me avoid having to listen to my parents’ complaints about little things all the time.”
He started thinking about little things his parents used to blame him for— How his mother asked him to make his bed after he woke up. If he left the bathroom door open, his mother would ask him to close the door and before that check if the tap was turned off properly. How his father asked him to switch off the fan or light switch before he left. How his mother always blamed him for not keeping things at the right places.
While thinking about all these, he thought, “Why should I listen to their words? Why should I do all these? If I get a job, I will definitely leave their home.”
When looking around, Max saw that there were many candidates (应试者) sitting in that office. He saw that the light in the office was still on and it was ten o’clock in the morning. Remembering his father’s words, he got up and switched off the light. When he saw that water was falling from the water cooler kept at the office, he went to turn off the tap properly.
It was time to go up to the second floor for the interview, everyone went upstairs in turn. On the way up the stairs, a chair stood in the way, and the other candidates bypassed it, but Max removed it, set it aside, and walked to the second floor.
Now, as Max waited outside, he saw the candidates in front of him keep going in and coming out immediately. After talking to these people, he learned that the interviewers didn’t ask them anything.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
It was Max’s turn to be interviewed.

After the interview, Max reached home and hugged his parents.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
It was Max’s turn to be interviewed. He went inside and passed his file to the interviewers. After looking at his file, an interviewer asked, “When are you joining?” A wave of surprise flooded into Max’s mind. Looking at his face, the interviewer said, “Today, in interviews, no one was asked anything. We noticed everyone came but no one switched off the tap or light except you. You have good values and habits. This is what we evaluate most.”
After the interview, Max reached home and hugged his parents. He told them about the interview and the result. He apologized to them and thanked them. He said, “In my life, my degree has less value in comparison to the lessons I have learned from you because of your strict demand on small matters. Today, I come to know that not only education but good habits and values have their own importance if I want to succeed in life. A person who doesn’t have self-disciplines, no matter how smart he is, can’t succeed in his life.”

The Most Popular National Parks in the US

Joshua Tree National Park
Named for the trees native to the park, 1,200-square-mile Joshua Tree National Park in California is slightly larger than the state of Rhode Island.
A. 200 mph. B. 85 mph. C. 65 mph. D. 310 mph.
9 What can we learn from the example given in paragraph 3?
