Before we start today's lesson, let's watch a short video together. (Play a video about a natural disaster, like a tsunami.) Okay, class, from this video, which natural disaster is mentioned? That's right, it's a tsunami. And where do you think this tsunami might have happened? Some of you guessed it, it's in Asia. Now, can you briefly describe what you saw in the video? Yes, the huge waves were really powerful, sweeping away everything in their path, like houses, cars, and even people. Tsunamis are extremely destructive natural disasters. They can cause great loss of life and property. Today, we are going to focus on a news report about a tsunami. This will not only help us understand more about this kind of disaster but also improve our reading and writing skills. So, are you ready to start our exploration? 2. Pre - Reading Look at the picture and the title on the screen. The title is "TSUNAMI HITS ASIA: OVER 6,500 DEAD". Just from this, can you infer the type of this text? Raise your hands if you have an idea. Right, it's a news report. A news report usually aims to inform the public about important events in a timely and accurate way. Now, let's predict what this text might be mainly about. Who wants to share their prediction? Well, since the title mentions "Tsunami Hits Asia" and "Over 6,500 Dead", we can guess that it will talk about when the tsunami happened, where it hit, how many people were affected, and maybe the cause of the tsunami and the rescue work afterwards. This prediction will help us read more purposefully. 3. While - Reading Now, let's start reading the news report carefully. First, let's look at the structure of this news report. A news report usually has a headline, a byline, a lead, a body, and an end. The headline "TSUNAMI HITS ASIA: OVER 6,500 DEAD" tells us what happened, that is, a tsunami hit Asia and caused a large number of deaths. It should be brief and catch readers' eyes. The byline shows the reporter and the date. Here, the reporter is Robert Woodhouse, and the date is Monday, 27 December 2004. Let's read the lead part, which is the first paragraph. "The most powerful earthquake in the past 40 years caused a tsunami that crashed into coastlines across Asia yesterday, killing more than 6,500 people in Indonesia, India, Thailand, Malaysia, and at least four other countries. Fishermen, tourists, hotels, homes, and cars were swept away by huge waves caused by the strong earthquake that reached a magnitude of 9.0. The undersea quake struck around 7:00 a.m., Sunday off the west coast of Indonesia’s Sumatra Island. In that area alone, at least 1,870 people were killed." From this lead, we can figure out the answers to the five Ws and one H. What happened? A tsunami hit Asia. Where did it happen? Along the coastlines across Asia. When did it happen? Yesterday, which was 26 December 2004, and the undersea quake started around 7:00 a.m., Sunday. Why did it happen? Because of a very powerful earthquake of 9.0 - magnitude which happened under the sea off the west coast of Sumatra Island in Indonesia. Who were affected? Fishermen, tourists, and local people in those countries. So, the lead part gives us the most important and basic information about the event. Next, let's move on to the body part. In the rest of paragraph 1 and paragraph 2, we get more detailed information. In Sri Lanka, some 1,600 kilometres west of the quake centre, the number of deaths stood at 2,498, and one million more were affected by the tsunami, government officials said. Indian officials said as many as 1,900 had been killed along the southern coast. Another 254 were found dead in Thailand and 54 in three other countries. In southern Thailand, 1,900 people were hurt and many more were missing, local officials said. "I was having breakfast with my three children when water started filling my home. We had to leave everything and run to safety," said Chandra Theeravit, a local Thai woman. These numbers and the personal story really show the severity of the disaster. The numbers represent the real - life impact of the tsunami, such as the number of deaths, the number of people affected, and the number of people hurt or missing. The personal story makes the news more vivid and touching, allowing us to better understand the situation of the people who experienced the disaster. Finally, let's look at the end part. "Thousands of people are still missing, and the number of deaths is expected to grow even higher over the next few days. Foreign aid is being organised for the tsunami - hit countries. However, dangerous conditions and damaged roads will make it difficult to deliver food and supplies." This part tells us about the current situation after the tsunami. There are still many uncertainties, and the rescue work will face challenges due to the damaged infrastructure and dangerous conditions. 4. Post - Reading Now that we have a clear understanding of the news report, let's summarize its main points. We know that on 26 December 2004, a powerful earthquake in the Indian Ocean triggered a tsunami that hit the coastlines of many Asian countries. This led to over 6,500 deaths in Indonesia, India, Thailand, Malaysia, and other countries. Fishermen, tourists, and local residents were affected, with their property being swept away. In different countries, the number of casualties varied. For example, in Indonesia's Sumatra Island, at least 1,870 people were killed; in Sri Lanka, 2,498 people died, and one million more were affected; in India, 1,900 people were killed along the southern coast; in Thailand, 254 people were found dead, and 1,900 people were hurt in southern Thailand with many more missing. Currently, thousands of people are still missing, and the death toll is likely to rise. Although foreign aid is being arranged, the delivery of food and supplies is difficult because of the dangerous conditions and damaged roads. 5. Writing - related Now, class, we are going to learn how to write a summary of this news report. A summary is a short statement of main points. It tells the main ideas and the most important information of a longer passage. When writing a summary, we should include the key elements of the news, such as the time, place, cause, main events, and the result. Let's follow these steps. First, read the text again and write a list of the main details. We have already done this to some extent when analyzing the news report. Then, write down the main idea of each paragraph based on these details. For example, the main idea of the first paragraph is that a powerful earthquake caused a tsunami that hit Asia and led to many deaths in several countries. The main idea of the second paragraph is to give more detailed casualty numbers in different countries. The main idea of the third paragraph is about the current situation of missing people, the expected increase in the death toll, and the difficulties in rescue work. Now, let's try to write a summary together. We can start like this: "On 26 December 2004, a tsunami, triggered by a powerful earthquake, hit the coastlines of Asian countries. It caused over 6,500 deaths in Indonesia, India, Thailand, Malaysia, etc. Many people were hurt or missing. Currently, thousands are still missing, and the death toll may rise. Rescue work faces difficulties due to damaged conditions." This is a simple summary. You can add more details if you want, but remember to keep it concise. Now, it's your turn. I will give you 10 minutes to write a summary of this news report on your own. Try to include all the important information and use your own words as much as possible. (Wait for 10 minutes) Okay, time's up. Who wants to share their summary with the class? (Ask several students to share their summaries, and then give feedback. Point out the good points, such as clear expression of main ideas, accurate use of words, and also the areas that need improvement, like missing some key information or having grammar mistakes.) 6. Conclusion Today, we have learned a lot from this news report about a tsunami. We learned about the structure of a news report, how to extract important information from it, and most importantly, how to write a summary. Summarizing is an important skill that can help you in your reading and writing. You can use this skill not only for news reports but also for other types of texts. After class, I hope you can find more news reports about natural disasters and practice writing summaries. This will not only improve your English skills but also make you more aware of the importance of disaster prevention and response. That's all for today's class. Thank you!
